Well, from that perspective it is definitely better than 4e and 3.5e, both of which have a rule for everything, and other rules that contradict the first set of rules, but there was definitely more room for DM flexibility in 1, 2 & 3.

Chandan

Frowning in interest (and possibly myopia), the old monk watches intently as the work gets underway. How to help?

The dwarf's advice about the loose rocks gives Chandan an idea though.

"Hm. Maybe they just need a little shake." He wonders aloud, then to his friends, "Mind your toes."

Concentrating, he attunes himself to the Five Elements. Earth, yes. He makes a sign with his hand and focuses through it, humming slightly.

[Chandan will use Elemental Attunement to induce a gentle rumbling of stone where Nundro has indicated.]

OOC: Mike, it depends on the DM. Lots of DMs get into trouble because they "allow" players to be flexible and then turn around and apply that same flexibility for the bad guys. I tend to straddle the rules closely because of that. To players this feels restrictive ... up until the moment that DM turns the table on the players. Dugan came up with a reasonable tactic that could use this "Ready" action effectively. See the OOC chat.

[[ yeah, saw that. Dugan is better at this than I am these days <sigh> And, gotta say that ... the things I don't like about 5e aside ... I do love how you GM and am enjoying the game (rules frustrations not withstanding) <chuckle> ]]

Davroar

He will help as best as he can as a bear. What he lacks in dexterity he will use his strength shoving larger rocks to either side to start the base for a narrow passage as the others clear the rocks from the front.

The party is poised to pull down the barrier and confront the large guard and those he was talking to. They have worked hard to make the entryway difficult for the ogres to navigate with each rock and bolder removed from the pile. Now they're ready for Chandan to let the floodgates open and they all get into place for the confrontation. Whisper, the valiant scout, had to fly back or become a stain on the wall so Jaliera only gets a glimpse of what's beyond. But it's not a mystery any more. You expect a few big baddies. As the blood-lust builds in the ogres, they are now the opposite of steathy. They roar in anticipation of the confrontation, eager to eat bear, owl, dwarf and man-flesh this night.

You realize that the final rumbling of rocks that encounter is going to happen immediately as the earth beneath your feet starts to vibrate as Chandan channels elemental earth forces. Pebbles and dust start to tumble to the ground.

OOC - Mike, the compliment appreciated. You guys really are fun to play with too.

I moved Whisper to a place where she wouldn't have died. We don't want something like this happening to her (warning, graphic violence)

To make things easy, I placed rocks on the ground under you. They are symbolically now areas of difficult terrain for large beings. It will take an action for an ogre to clear an area. Their movement will be halved in that area. I also drew a red line. You should place yourselves anywhere you like behind that line, representing where you will be when the wall comes tumbling down.

You might as well all roll for initiative too.

Finally, I posted about my absence for the next week or two in in the Members Availability thread. I'm not going to grind to a halt, but I can't imagine that I'll be posting much. Timing isn't great, but c'est la vie.

When the rocks tumble down, Chandan widens his feet and lowers the tip of his spear.

Ryssa

Her short bow at the ready, Ryssa uttered a quick prayer to the Morninglord.

Ryssa Initiative Roll: 1d20+2 = 3

Now, isn't that impressive?

The barrier comes down and the ogre force is revealed. There are six of the big oafs and they look fierce. They are pumped up by the loud booming sound that comes from behind them. You've been here before. You know that behind the the ogres is a ledge fifteen feet above a large lake. The booming sound comes from the waters crashing against the walls below. If the drow found a way to navigate the lake, he would be very difficult to track down if there was a way into the Underdark.

But the drow was not visible. Six ogres were, and the heros get the first blows in since the ogres are large, clumsy and not really good at planning their attacks.

Chandan

It's the classic story of spear stabs throat, spear withdraws from throat, spear stabs throat again.

The monk follows up his swift strikes with a roundhouse kick.

But after all that, Chandan can see that the ogre is less than impressed.

[ooc: without any ranged attack in his current form Davroar will just have to hang back given the narrow confines of the passage that they are in, but will be ready to replace their front line fighters in case they get badly injured.]

OOC: Kriv is up. Whisper and Jaliera are next. I'm very curious about Whisper's actions!
BTW, Pande should be joining us for this encounter after his long vacation in Mexico.

I moved both Chandan and Kriv up to the "first" ogre who has died on the roll20 map. Kriv certainly has enough move to attack a second one. AJ, please place yourself on the map and tell me which ogre (by newly added name tags) is next to suffer the Wrath of Khan Kriv. Whisper and Jaliera are up.

Whisper

She repositions so that she can watch over Nundro as well as the party's rear.

[OOC Is the dwarf meant to be that far back? Also need Kriv to move before Jaliera's action. Ta. smile ]

OOC: Nundro will inch closer but he prefers to stay far away from combat and hides in the darkness as he's a commoner. I moved him closer and even though it appears that there's light where he is, he'll be pressed against the wall in the shadows. You can also take his action as a DM hint that Whisper has better things to do.

Nundro
He sees the owl and shoo's her away indicating that he neither needs or wants supervision.

Number 2. If I have enough move to resume station beside Chandan afterward, that would be my preference, otherwise current position is fine.

OOC: Perfect. Jaliera is up. Lumi is on-deck. I think you can act simultaneously. Nobody that hasn't gone this round yet will be able to move close enough to the ogres to battle hand-to-hand this round but you can all use range attacks and position yourselves tactically with an understanding that the ogres will (100%) close to do combat.

[[ before Bern goes can you let me/him know which of the ogres are damaged ... and as much as I would love to know actual numbers ... relative damage is good enough.

By the way, you have Bern's init wrong. He got 11 ... not 22 ( unless I missed something <g> ) and so should be after Ryssa ]]

That must've been a type-o. I had Bern in the right spot but I did it when I had pink-eye and only saw half the number that I typed :gd&r:

Ogre 1 is dead.
Ogre 2 took 20 damage from Kriv. All the other ones are at full HPs.
