The hastily created barricade does not stand much of a chance against the sheer will and determination of the dragonborn. Kriv, leading the others, works the largest of the obstacles that have been stacked up to bar their way and with that concerted effort, the wall comes down, bit by bit. Nundro is a skilled miner and he helps, not just by rolling stones away, but by making sure that they do the task safely, stopping Kriv a couple of times with a warning that moving that stone would send those stones tumbling down on the group.

The task takes a few minutes and that is frustrating, but without powerful magic, that's what it takes. The barrier now down, the party can proceed.

OOC: Don't move forward yet. I want to give everyone a chance to line themselves up where they would be before moving forward. I'll give you all until tomorrow morning (afternoon across the pond). FYI, it's FTF time for Neptune and Zeim tomorrow (FTF means Roll20). Fortunately, for the first time in what seems like a decade, neither of us are DMing. It's nice to play once in a while! Additionally, next weekend I'm flying down to Florida for a short, 3-day vacation with my brother to see some pre-season baseball. I'll be missing from next Thursday night to next Sunday night ET.

He was torn between wanting to get them past the barricade and keeping them from being 'surprised'. Since Kriv and Nunduro seemed to have the dismantling cleanly in hand, he returned to the entrance to make sure no one came from that direction. He was sure that Kriv and the others would be able to handle any surprises from their end ... at least until he could get there to help.

OOC: Heading to Tampa with a side visit to Orlando to where one of my besties lives. We have tickets to 4 games in 3 days - Baseball OD!

Gypsy, Whisper was with you behind the barricade with nothing additional more to report there. As the barricade begins to fall you will be able to send her through - but remember that I've taken the kid gloves off. She scouts at her own peril. Let's say that right about now she'll be able to get through. I have perception rolls for you,

Ryssa

Ryssa stayed close to Nundro, not far behind Kriv, the dragonborn. She cast light from her new found magic mace and looked around to the others, wondering what the more tactical members of their group would decide to do next.

It was notable that the Dragonborn noble deferred to the Dwarven miner swiftly and without hesitation: the honour debt of Norixius Keep to the Rockseekers was something he took personally and seriously.

OOC: I had perception rolls for Whisper already. More important, I need 1 initiative roll - for Whisper only. It's a life-or-death roll....

Jaliera

Her eyes unfocused, she leans against the wall watching through Whisper's eyes. Suddenly she straightens, her eyes wide, looking at her companions.

"Ambush! Ogre! Range attacks!"

She readies her bow and looks for a clear shot.

Whisper comes scooting back, hiding behind Jaliera.

He hears Jaliera's call and moves forward, his bow still at the ready. The first one that steps out to fire will get an arrow.

The Dragonborn asked quickly,

"How far ahead?"

Kriv made ready to throw his bonded staff, glowing with the light spell.

"Right behind the barrier! Don't take it all down."

She is ready to fire.

Indeed, as Whisper crawls back out, you hear a thud against the barrier from the other side. It's not difficult to conclude that it was a clumsy ogre noticing something and trying to wack it. You then hear it shout out something. Whisper may have seen one ogre but...

While ogres aren't as clever as bugbears, they make up for their lack of brains with an abundance of size and meanness.

Kriv

He nodded, and switched from staff to maul with a thought: He could fire bolt as easily with either, but if the enemy was in their faces, there was no need to light them up at range and a possibility he needed to hold the line.

He heard the 'commotion' from the other side of the barrier and moved for a better vantage with his bow, ready ... he hoped ... for what ever came next.

He will move back slightly aside to allow his archers a cleaner shot, but will be ready to block any sort of rush attack the ogre might try to do.

As the report comes back from the owl, the heroes stop their work on removing the barrier and draw their weapons. Then they realize that they can't break down the barrier and still be truly armed and ready for battle. Without the barrier down, they will not confront the enemies.

What that all means is that I need to know who's working the barrier. Those folks will be somewhat vulnerable (opponents will have advantage) as they are hefting large boulders out of the way. Nobody will be surprised but I don't see how the task of breaking through does not make you vulnerable. I'm open to clever tactics smile

One of the advantages of a maul was it could serve many a purpose, designed for rugged use and high velocity impacts on hard surfaces, Plus, the length of the haft gave it considerable facility for leverage. The weapon could be a tool, the tool could be a weapon, and gods have mercy on anyone who thought they'd be assaulting an an unarmed peon.

Ryssa

The cleric was not sure for which alternative she should prepare. She was not overly strong and neither was she talented in melee action. After a few moments of thought, Ryssa took her shield and slung it on her back before nocking an arrow in her shortbow and moving up close to the ranger.

"I will try to help as best I can, Bern."

"Sounds like a plan", he said with a wink. "Just don't shoot any of our friends", he said with a big grin.

OOC: Yes. Ready an action is an action. First the text of the rule from the 5e SRD then a bit on how it applies (or, in this case, doesn't):

Quote
Ready
Sometimes you want to get the jump on a foe or wait for a particular circumstance before you act. To do so, you can take the Ready action on Your Turn, which lets you act using your Reaction before the start of your next turn.
First, you decide what perceivable circumstance will trigger your Reaction. Then, you choose the action you will take in response to that trigger, or you choose to move up to your speed in response to it. Examples include “If the Cultist steps on the trapdoor, I’ll pull the lever that opens it,” and “If the Goblin steps next to me, I move away.”

When the trigger occurs, you can either take your Reaction right after the trigger finishes or ignore the trigger. Remember that you can take only one Reaction per round.

When you ready a spell, you cast it as normal but hold its energy, which you release with your Reaction when the trigger occurs. To be readied, a spell must have a Casting Time of 1 action, and holding onto the spell’s magic requires Concentration. If your Concentration is broken, the spell dissipates without taking effect. For example, if you are concentrating on the web spell and ready Magic Missile, your web spell ends, and if you take damage before you release Magic Missile with your Reaction, your Concentration might be broken.

This doesn't apply now because you are not yet in melee. We are not counting rounds and have not rolled initiative. That is fair because, as DM, I can say that the ogre(s) are similarly readying actions. From the description I've provided, it's clear that they are. In other words, everyone is lined up to engage. In that case, we will roll initiative and then begin combat. If (hypothetically) we did reactions, they offset.

Note too that the readied action is a reaction. That means that when it's triggered you don't get to do anything else. You don't get bonus actions or moves. You do those while you take your action to ready an action. IE: I move to behind the bolder, take cover (stealth bonus action for a rogue) and ready my bow to fire at the first ogre that runs through the barricade.. Also note that as a reaction, it is NOT an interrupt. If you do that, the ogre gets to charge through, complete all of his actions (move and attack) and only then do you go.

A proper use of the maneuver is to enable a shifting of your tactical situation to do something. There's a really good article about this here: How to Use the Ready Action in D&D 5e
