Determined to continue the frying of arachnids, Ryssa brings down the wrath of Lathander in a blaze of fire on the last remaing foe. But the spider still stands.

Luminmorn, infuriated by the fact that he's been wrapped in webbing for most of this battle, still bleeding profusely from the wounds that nearly took his life, rushes forward yelling "I have had enough of you!" He crashes Hew, his magical dwarven battle axe, down on the spider, separating it's head from it's thorax.

With no other living enemy in sight and asks, "What now?" And after a moment, when he notices Jaliera cradeling Chandan's head in her lap. He shakes his reptilian head, as if to get the cobwebs out of it. "Didn't I just see you run out that way?". His finger points to the door he is near, the only door in the room. "How long was I down for?"

Davroar

With no enemies in sight, Davroar will cancel his flame sphere and shift back to his human form. Seeing how their group is pretty beat up he will approach Luminmorn and cast two cure wound spells to help.
He will then move over to Chandan and ask after he has taken the healing potion that Jaliera offered to him, "Still need a healing spell?"

[Just need a quick status update on Chandan's hit points, post-healing potion administering.]

Chandan

Glad to see and hear all of his comrades still alive, Chandan sits up.

"Thank you for looking after me." He says to Jaliera, before standing stiffly as if from a long deep sleep.

The healing potion has worked its magic, and he feels much improved. "I will walk a little and tell you how I feel, Davroar."

As he stretches his legs, searching for his spear, Luminorm's question begs an answer, though Chandan isn't sure he has one.

"I was fighting spiders and bugbears, then something struck me... a spell perhaps. I fell into oblivion, like a sudden death, until I stirred, awaking within dreams, then finally here with Jaliera shaking me.

"Wasn't I lying here the whole time?"

Jaliera

She smiles warmly at Chandan as the old monk gets to his feet and she follows his example, tucking her dagger away as she takes her bow firmly in hand again. Then her smile broadens as Davroar moves up to ask about Chandan. He is so handsome. Davroar, that is, not the monk, though she has a fondness for the old man.

"Lumimorn is correct. That's what Whisper told me, that Chandan had chased the drow out of the room but once the darkness lifted, she spotted you behind this pillar. So was that some sort of magic tricks that the drow performed? Maybe to stop us firing arrows at his retreating form?"

<Bern>

He smiled as Chandan began talking. It is a good sign.

He moves into the room so that he can better cover the two obvious entrances as well as the rest of the room ... in case there are other ways in.

Chandan

The monk twizzles his hair, thinking.

"Hmm. You should ask me a question only I would know the answer to, to make sure I am who I appear to be."

Hopefully he will answer correctly and remove any doubt in his own mind!

Davroar

He thinks back a couple of days to ask a bit of a trick question, "Okay, Chandan. Which one of us walked up to the tent first at Old Owl Well, and who did we find there?"

With the battle ended, the party has found a person that looks and sounds like Chandan after watching a different person that looks like Chandan go racing after the Black Spider. Shouldn't they all have run after him too?

The two objectives of the mission were to rescue Gundren's brothers and to bring their abductor to justice. So far, neither has been achieved. They found the dead body of one of the brothers at the entrance to the mines. Now they've let the Black Spider escape their grasp. Will there be another opportunity to catch him? What happens if they don't?

It now seems clear that the party has actually done the Black Spider's bidding. He was likely being thwarted by all the undead guardians in the mines. The party has mostly cleared out the mines for him. Why would he not just wait until they left to reclaim the mines before leading his followers back to try and reap the rewards it offered.

And what of the third brother? Didn't they see a glimpse of him earlier? Is he still alive? And they now can't even be sure of each other. Is this really their friend? What if he isn't?

OOC: I don't know if this is the right time to bring this up, but I will. I am trying to clarify the module's objectives but I'm not sure if you understand what just happened. You see, the end of module experience points are to be awarded for the two objectives mentioned: rescuing the brothers and to capture and deliver the Black Spider to Sildar in Phandelin. This room was supposed to be THE major climax but your handling of it changes things. The authors of the module had not expected the party to completely fail as you have so far. We continue, but we're entering the unscripted zone.

I admit that I notched up the "tactical" play signficantly for this room. The darkness, the deceptions, the physical placement of enemies was done in a manner to make this a major challenge. I think that you might have been caught somewhat off-guard by that. Let's see if you can take the play up a notch and salvage the results. So, because if that, I've decided to keep both objectives remain in play.

He ponders Davroar's question, whilst trying to loosen the muscles in his neck.

"Ah, that was me! Then noble Kriv Norixius took over. The red wizard in the tent was from Thay... Hmm. I never saw Thay when I came from the East. I came by boat, from Brightstar Lake to the Sea of Fallen Stars."

Nope, his neck won't loosen.

"Davroar, I think I might need more of your healing magic!"

OOC: My quick math indicates that the party is nursing 107 HP worth of damage. You probably have enough Hit Dice left to use for self-healing during a short break. This would seem to be a good time UNLESS you decide to chase after the Black Spider before it's too late to catch him. However, I do not see that anyone has seems to have that urgency smile

Ah. OK. Here's the rule:
Quote
SHORT REST
A short rest is a period of downtime, at least 1 hour long, during which a character does nothing more strenuous
than eating, drinking, reading, and tending to wounds.
A character can spend one or more Hit Dice at the end of a short rest, up to the character's maximum number of Hit Dice, which is equal to the character's level. For each Hit Die spent in this way, the player rolls the die
and adds the character's Constitution modifier to it. The character regains hit points equal to the total. The player can decide to spend an additional Hit Die after each roll. A character regains some spent Hit Dice upon finishing a long rest.

You are all 5th level so you have 5 each. The die type is the same as your HP dice.

Of course, 1 hour might as well be 1 year if you let the Black Spider slip away.

Davroar

Davroar pats gently taps Chandan on the back when he answers correctly, and says to him just before casting a healing spell, "You got that right. Let me see what I can do..."

Davroar will then quickly head over to the dwarf by the table to see if the last of his healing spells might save him.

Davroar Cure wounds on Chandan
Dugan rolled 1d8+7 and got 12

[ooc: Neptune, in regards to your comments about failing in this past combat round. On page 46 the Drow immediately makes his demands "Come no closer..." to Luminmorn once he steps into the room. A new combat round then starts with the spiders still attacking us. Bern (in the hallway out of sight of the drow) retaliates, shooting the spiders around Chandan (down and restrained). Luminmorn was webbed and cannot move. Jaliera manages to break free from her webs. Davroar moves the flame sphere towards the bugbears. The Drow is next and in his turn makes good on his threat to kill the dwarf. Kriv then goes last, striking a bugbear.

Was moving the flame sphere into the room what made the Drow decide to kill the dwarf, even though it did not strike anyone and was more of a parallel move? My apologies to the group for my tactical mistake if this is the case. ]

The one reply I have for you Dugan is that at this moment, you don't really have any idea what just happened. That's probably at the top of the problems.

The flaming sphere was probably one of the best tactical moves. I would have used it differently, but that doesn't diminish it's worth. But yes, negotiating with the drow would have certainly resulted in a different outcome.

Chandan

Finally able to turn his head left and right without wincing, Chandan squeezes Davroar's shoulder gratefully.

"Thank you, brave Davroar."

The fighting hasn't long lulled, with corpses still smoldering around them. The monk picks up his spear, secures his raggedy robes and saffron scarf.

The dwarf has disappeared into thin air then, and a second Chandan is running amok. Like his friends, the old monk senses mischief.

"Ah so, we must find the dwarf. If he is slain, we can return his body at least.

"The Black Spider has a head start on us, yes, but dungeons are a drow's natural environment.

"Once he reaches the surface, he will be alone in the wilderness. We have Bern and Davroar. We will be hot on his heels and in our natural environment."

Has anyone checked behind the last door? Given the commotion in the passageway outside, Chandan assumes the room is unoccupied by enemy forces.

Arranging what light he can, Chandan quickly pops his head around the door (if it opens).

Chandan tries the door in the hallway that they entered. OOC: not the door to the south where the drow and other Chandan used and finds that it is locked.

MikeD - For a spell it depends on the spell. You have 4 spell slots available. You'd need to check on level and specifics of each spell for details. D8+Con would be for your personal healing Dice, yes.
