DM The spiders were waiting for the invaders. That is clear. Darkness is their ally. Light signified the approach of prey. Once they all skittered out of the darkness all six of them swarmed towards and into the hallway. These were uncommon and deadly predators. Although their first barrage failed to harm any of the intruders, their attack was effective.
Three of the spiders tried to bite the two nearest targets. The spider that had ensnared Whisper chose to go after juicier prey and scurried towards Jaliera. When it tried to bite her it's fangs clicked together as she dodged the fangs. The spider that had trapped Chandan is joined by another spider as they began to feast on the monk. Somehow, even trapped in webbing, Chandan avoids the poisoned fangs of both, even though they had a clear advantage.
Three of the other spiders had not yet spun their webs and they chose to shoot as they approached their prey. Kriv avoids the webbing targetting him but Jaliera and Lumi are restrained. With half the party now ensnared, the reality that they might be doomed is tangible. What's more daunting is that you do not know what else lurks in the dark chamber beyond.
I rolled a natural 20 for initiative; a bad time that. It's astounding that I missed on all the damage attacks - especially o Chandan because the two spiders attacked with advantage which basically means 4 misses!
With three of you restrained, you should pay attention to what that means: Restrained - A restrained creature’s speed becomes 0, and it can’t benefit from any bonus to its speed. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature’s Attack rolls have disadvantage. The creature has disadvantage on Dexterity Saving Throws.
I've uploaded 2 graphics. One of them is the stats of the Giant Spiders. You've faced them enough times to have learned a lot about them. Read it. It might help. Status:
DM Both of Bern's arrows strike true, wounding two of the spiders. But these are tough foes. A single arrow or even two would not be enough to fell the 8-legged critters. Jaliera (restrained) goes, then Davroar
He will cast his flame sphere once again making it appear right behind the spider that Bern just hit and will then roll the sphere at the spider's back. He hopes that this will make the spiders retreat.
Davroar flame sphere damage Dugan rolled 2d6 and got 11 (half damage on Dex save) [ooc: using up my last level 2 spell slot ]
DM Davroar rams the flaming sphere into the spider who is unable to successfully dodge the most severe impact and it screeches in agony. The noise echos through the mines, but combat is rarely quiet.
Spider-6 Dex Save flaming sphere Neptune rolled 1d20+3 and got 11
1) If he succeeds on his DC 12 strength check to break free, he can move away from the flaming sphere. However, he cannot do so without suffering 3 opportunity attacks.
2) If he succeeds on his DC 12 strength check to break free, he can end his turn without moving and needs to make a DC 15 Dex save (that's Davroar's spell DC) or take full Flaming Sphere damage (11 pts). If he succeeds he takes only half damage (5 pts)
3) If he fails on his DC 12 strength check to break free, he can end his turn without moving and needs to make a DC 15 Dex save but this one is at disadvantage (because he is still restrained and that's an effect of the condition) or take full Flaming Sphere damage (11 pts). If he succeeds he takes only half damage (5 pts). Either way the webs will have burned away.
4) You can do something totally unexpected.
Oh, and yeah, I know that I revealed some of the map. You'll hear about it after Chandan's actions. Ryssa is on deck.
Closing his eyes and taking a deep breath, the old monk tenses, applying his strength like flowing water against the webs. The flames close on him, he opens an eye, then redoubles his efforts. A slight squeak escapes from his buttocks, then suddenly the webs tear and he vaults free, over the haunches of the spiders, back-flipping into the room beyond.
[Chandan Str Save 9+3 Proficiency=12 Spend 1 Kit point on Step of the Wind(Disengage as bonus action)]
DM Chandan breaks out of the webs and propelled by flatulence, manages to flow through the sea of spider legs into the chamber beyond. He's at the edge of darkness but in the glow of the flaming sphere he sees a disheveled dwarf sitting at a table, barely able to lift his head off the table. He looks to be in bad shape, barely conscious. He also looks very scared.
Meanwhile Ryssa rains down fire upon the nearest spider, but it does not seem to be harmed very much. Luminmorn hacks away at that same spider, focusing fire on one target until it was gone. Fewer foes meant fewer chances they someone gets harmed. Unfortunately Ryssa's attack was more effective.
DM In the hallway, Kriv Flails at the spider but misses. While the spiders do skitter, they don't leave. Instead, the four flee the heat of the flaming sphere by climbing up and away from it. They climb up the walls and onto the ceiling with equal ease. And because they are already at close range, These four all try to bite the dungeon visitors. Kriv and Jaliera are both bitten can feel the burn of the spider venom. Davroar and Luminmorn are also attacked by they are able to fend off their attackers.
The two spiders inside the chamber chase after Chandan. One is able to generates enough silk to aim it's spinnerets at the old man. It stops halfway towards him and ensnares him in the web. Once he's held, it follows the other spider. That other spider is unable to spin it's web so it tries to sting Chandan but misses. Bound now in webs, on the edge of darkness, the monk glances over once more at the semiconcious dwarf. He lifts his head when he sees the monk now wrapped in spider web but he seems to look past Chandan, into the darkness. Others can see more movement behind Chandan. Two figures brandishing weapons are closing in on the monk. Giant spiders can walk on walls and ceilings with no penalty. They climbed the wall above the party and are attacking downward. In the map, I flipped the hallway walls down to depict where the spiders are. To be really acurate, they should really be 5 feet back, but to show that they are in melee range, I placed them adjacent.

He grits his teeth as the spider bites him and at the same time is dismayed to find that the spiders hunger overrides their common sense to flee from fire. Maneuvering his flame sphere up he will attempt to attack the same spider that he had badly burnt before.
Davroar flame sphere damage Dugan rolled 2d6 and got 10 (half-damage if DEX save)
[ooc: Not sure if spider 4 is still on the ground or on the wall. If it is still on the ground raising the flame sphere up ten feet it should have enough movement go over spider 4, hovering above Luminmorn and move into spider 6. Otherwise my only option is to attack spider 4 with it. ]
DM Davroar rolls the sphere towards the nearest spider and it screeches as it burns.
ooc: Spider 4 is on the floor next to Jaliera and Davroar. The spiders DID flee the fire and headed directly up and away from it. The sphere is ground bound except as described in the spell:
Quote
When you move the Sphere, you can direct it over barriers up to 5 feet tall and jump it across pits up to 10 feet wide. I needs to be on the ground at the end of your turn. I'll assume it's against Spider 4.
Spider-4 dex save Neptune rolled 1d20+3 and got 4 - full damage (10). Note that fire will free Jaliera (with some pain). It might hurt and it might save her life. If you leave the sphere where it is, she'll be free next round if she doesn't break free herself, but she will take some damage.
Meanwhile, the two figures that were in the darkness behind Chandan get their attack. The bugbears attack with surprise and both hit the monk. He teeters on the brink of consciousness but remains barely alive. Bugbear-4 attacks Chandan with advantage, Dam, Surpise dam Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4,2d8+2,2d6 and got 16, 18, 8, 7 Bugbear-5 attacks Chandan with advantage, Dam, Surpise dam Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4,2d8+2,2d6 and got 18, 23, 7, 9 ooc: I only made the bugbears somewhat visible to give you guys the opportunity to do something. I was bending the rules in your favor. Chandan would not have seen them until it was too late. Status:
(OOC - As much as this party has been completely averse to using any magic other than healing or cantrips, for the most part, I'd think it's past time for some, eh?)
(OOC: They are nicely bunched up on the ceiling, true. I reckon a burning hands should have the spread for that depending how we rule on a cone angled up.)
Attacked on all sides, the monk still doesn't give up. There is a dwarf to save and by the light of the flaming sphere he sees his young cohorts are marauded yet by giant spiders.
At least Chandan has drawn away two and---who invited the bugbears!?---tearing the webs from his raggedy robes, barely maintaining his modesty in doing so, the old man prepares to go down fighting all comers.
