She sees the door through Whisper's eyes and slings her bow before speaking to Bern.
"Going up front. We have a door."
And she makes her way to the front of the group so she can check it and see if it is locked. She is also remembering that tower and those pesky goblins that lay in wait for them. They need to have a better approach this time.
[OOC Intention was for Jaliera to check out the door but I can't see it on the map so I have moved her next to Chandan. Whisper looking around the corner.]
[ooc: Gypsy, I'll let you move Jaliera and Whisper around if you want to check out the door. I had a brief communication with Pande about Lumi. He's hoping to jump in here or there. I'll move him on the map. Exeter, is Ryssa going to stand outside all alone? ]
Leaving Whisper at the front on guard for any activity, Jaliera will listen at the door, then check it for traps, then see if it is locked but she has no intention of opening the door or going in just yet.
[OOC What do I roll for traps? Been ages since I did that.]
Jaliera Listen check Gypsy rolled 1d20+5 and got 9
To find traps you would make a perception roll. You would also make a perception roll to listen at the door. You can make them separate rolls. The door is locked.
However....
You're an arcane trickster with mage hand legerdemain and thieves' tools. You can pick locks from 30 feet away. To unlock the locked door you would make a (believe it or not) slight of hands roll. Because you're using the thieves tools, you add your proficiency modifier to that roll which is +3. So, to open the lock from 30 feet away you would roll 1d20+7.
You can take it from here. BTW, the roll of 9 is less than you would need.
However....since you sent Whisper out to scout, the most important roll is her perception roll. And not that it really matters, but at what elevation is she? Choices are 0', 5', 10', 15' high (rooms are 20' high in this area. 15 covers 15-19' up).
While Jaliera started to mess with the lock, Whisper moved into the room beyond. The spirit owl noticed movement up ahead but it was too late. She didn't notice the threat right near her. She is suddenly hit by a gob of webbing and gets plastered to the ceiling. She is tiny and the webbing has restrained her.
Jaliera is also unable to spot any traps on the door but before she attempts to unlock it, she realizes there are other priorities. Just as she realized that Whisper was in trouble, so was Chandan. He too is hit with a gob of spider webbing and is restrained. Only then do the spiders emerge from darkness. So far four of the giant arachnids are visible. What else is in that room is still unknown.
OOC: Since Whisper was "scouting" and can see into the blackness I gave her an active perception check. Normally the stealth is against passive perception. Chandan could not see his assailant coming. I'm being "easy" on you and only gave the spiders 2 surprise attacks and I made it "harmless" webbing - no damage.
To break out of the webbing, you need to use a full round action to break free with a DC 12 strength check.
Jaliera is more than distracted. Has she lost her little friend again? And so quickly! But she realises that Whisper is still alive for now.
"Giant Spiders!"
She draws her bow and moves quickly to a position where she can fire at the spider (1) threatening Whisper, intending to hide once she has done that. Those webs looked nasty!
He may be a homeless vagrant, but Chandan is still a monk and getting plastered by sticky white gloop in a dark passageway is not something he's accustomed too.
He struggles to free himself, whilst calling to his companions.
