Climbing up from the creek bed, he will move a little bit forward and off to the side to let the others have some space, while watching for anything that might come at them from the direction of the stairs on the right.
Under Whisper's watchful eyes, the heroes climb up the ropes and make it to the other side. Fortunately for them, in a vulnerable state, no random monsters wander by.
DM Random monsters (17-20 on d20) Neptune rolled 1d20 and got 16
You can all place yourselves on the other side of the rift now, anywhere north of the waterfall/stream but not on any stairs.
She will follow the others up the rope, her bow slung whilst she does so. Once at the top she will prepare her bow again, ready to follow the others as they head for the stairs.
With the last of them up, he will quickly and quietly coil the rope here to prevent anyone else from coming up from behind. Once that is done he will ask Jaliera, "Send Whisper to scout the stairs first?"
DM Chandan advances to the steps. It is dark and he can only see as far as the various light sources that tthe others carry sheds. But he knows something already. They killed two bugbears in the cavern but earlier, before they fought the ghouls, Jaliera, who stopped to survey the cavern through Whispers eyes, reported a drow and at least one more bugbear.
If Chandan is scouting ahead, please provide me with a perception roll. Everyone else, are you following? Please place yourselves.
He continues to keep bow ready and an eye out for any new threats. There was at least one more bugbear by his count. And he would not be surprised to ... 'discover' that there were other threats wandering around this place.
OOC: I'll wait till everyone positions themselves on the Roll20 map before moving forward from here, but I'll set it up.
DM The steps lead up Chandan continues to scout forward. He needs light to guide his way but the spillage from behind him shows the monk that after the first set of steps up it turns left and then to the right there's an additional set of steps up. Beyond those steps he can see a hallway leading west. It opens into a room of some sorts 20 feet after the foot of the stairs. To the right there's a door and like all doors in these mines, it is 6 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and made of six-inch-thick cut slabs of stone fitted with iron handles and hinges.
Ryssa felt an urge to use her new magically-endowed weapon and had to restrain herself from charging forward to Chandan's side. She knew the others were better fighters, however, and held back close to the two dragonborn warriors.
<heh heh heh> Must be a lag ... or maybe a 'refresh' issue. I saw your post and went and nothing had changed. Something to keep in mind as we go forward.
BTW ... I am liking having the 'visual reference' that the Roll20 gives the game <g>
