Though hardly a time for levity, the monk did indeed have the right of it once more.

"Kriv Norixius, of Norixius Keep. Would that these were better circumstances."

He briefly consulted his notes, then looked across at both the survivors and fallen.

"I don't suppose there's one named Favric amongst you, is there?"

How ironic would it be if the... enthusiastic members of their group had ended up siding with the enemy they had made such haste to get here for?

Ryssa


The cleric's eyes narrowed in sudden suspicion.

She slowly shook her head, turned and pointed at the corpse of Favric.

"That was Favric. Why, were you looking for him?"

Kriv

"We had information that he was trying to recruit the dragon to the service of those we currently oppose."

He looked at the state of the body, and mused drily,

"It seems there is no love lost there either. I suspect we may have common cause, or at least a common foe."

Luminmorn

He listens and watches "we had been here and were dealing with other things when we saw those men walking through the remains of this settlement. We followed them to see what was going on. That man Favric approached us with his proposition. We didn't dissuade him because we felt that it might be easier to take both the dragon and the men at the same time. As it turned out, it wasn't easier, nor did it go as planned. We regret our losses and I offer my condolences for your losses. I do not shed any tears for the man Favric and his evil associates." He didn't add that he was of mixed feelings for the dragon, but he didn't know the new comers well enough. It was true they had a similar goal, Favric had to die and be prevented from making an ally of the evil dragon.

"I am called Luminmorn. I agree we have had a common cause. The question we might address once we have taken care of our friends, is if we have a future causes that align well. I for one would be willing to discuss it."

It is clear the dragon born feels a lot better after his wounds having been completely healed by Ryssa. To that end he says "thank you for the healing," to her, in a soft voice.

Davroar

He introduces himself alongside Jaliera to say, "Hello, I'm Davroar.",

Looking at the bodies of Favric and his gang, he will start looking for rocks for either burial cairns or for a fire pit if the decision is to burn the bodies after they are searched.

Jaliera

"That is an interesting thought, joining forces. We are now down two since we left Neverwinter. Our cleric left some time ago and.."

She doesn't finish the sentence, the loss is too raw.

"You have lost two also. I am sorry for your loss. Perhaps we can sit down and talk in a little while? Maybe explore the tower together?"

It would be a way of finding out more about them too. She turns to her companions.

"We should look to Kallista's belongings."

There were no words, so he started working on laying their friends to rest. There didn't seem to be enough stone for a proper cairn, so he started to make a shallow grave. Then they could lay them to rest and cover them with the few stones that were available.

Ryssa


"You are welcome," she said to Luminmorn, "but you do not have to thank me. I just... extend the blessings of Lathander."

She smiled at her friend.

"It is just... what I do."

Ryssa moved to Bern's side and, as he worked to inter their friends, she prayed for them to have a peaceful transition to the next world.

GM

Balthazar, Lingo, and Kallista are put to rest after an hour or two of work. Their equipment is put into a single pile.

Next steps:

- Divide up their equipment. I need to know who is taking what, especially the magic items, and then you need to update your sheets.

- It seems you've agreed to join forces, though I don't think anyone has specifically talked about the missions each group is engaged in. A bit of beating around the bush, but no details. Could use more talking.

- Search the Dragon's Tower

- Agree to where to go next

- Everyone can level up to 4th level! According to the rules, this is your last chance to move around your stats, change classes, races, or other fundamentals about your pcs, so if you think a change would be better for you send me a PM and we can chat about it. Keep in mind you can always add a second class when you go up levels (so you would be a 3rd level whatever you currently are and a 1st level in your new class), that doesn't require changes. It would only be a complete change, like "I want to stop being a 3rd level fighter and become a 3rd level Barbarian, and then level up to 4th level Barbarian, or some such thing.

(OOC - Thanks, Neal. Only change I'd suggest is that the Staff of Defense is most useful for someone who can cast Mage Armor and Shield. In order to be able to cast those spells out of the Staff you have to have them in your Class' spell list (not your personal list, but available to your class). Otherwise all it will do is provide a +1 bonus to AC, and only while holding it in hand.

The only person in the party, currently, who could use it to it's full potential would be Kriv. As an Eldritch Knight he has access to those spells so could use them from the staff. However he'd have to be holding it, which realistically means he'd have to choose to use it as his primary weapon instead of his Maul, which would be a reduction in damage for him from 2d6 for the Maul to either 1d6 (using the quarterstaff one handed), or 1d8 using it 2-handed (although using it one handed would also allow using a shield, so Kriv could increase his AC by 3 that way (+2 for a shield and +1 for the Staff 1-handed, accepting the reduced damage).

The other alternative is somebody chooses to become dual-class and picks a mage type class that gets those spells. Then they could use it.

Otherwise, Davroar is fine, or even Ryssa or Chandan, but they would only get the +1 AC and not the spells.)

(OOC: A third alternative: Kriv uses the staff to provide Mage Armor as a breakfast buff each day, topping up as required, to whoever would benefit from it, then uses it as a walking staff, dropping or stowing it when he needs to maul something.

A fourth alternative: Kriv uses it each morning to buff whoever benefits then hands it off to someone else for the additional defensive benefit of carrying it. Thoughts?)

I hate to see such a large group without a mage type, but I really don't want to change Ryssa from cleric to an arcane caster (I've gotten pretty much used to that).

Let me think about this...

AJ - Not a bad idea. Only problem is that to use the Staff you have to be "attuned" to it, which takes time spent in meditation with it, so it is not easy to just pass it around from person to person. But Kriv could, at least, use the Mage Armour from it on somebody every morning and then stow it away if he didn't want to use it as his weapon.

Ex - Keep in mind that Kriv is an Eldritch Knight so does get some Mage spells, but yes, we talked a little while ago about the lack of a mage once Balthazar and Kallista left/died. If no one wants to change classes, or add 1 level of Mage/Sorceror/Warlock at this time, then it is not optimum, but you do have a variety of spellcasters (in fact everyone in the group has some sort of magical ability). You may just need to be creative.

(Eldritch Knights also get the ability to bond with up to two weapons and teleport them to hand as a bonus action from anywhere on the plane, which makes switching between maul and staff easier. The extra AC and possibility of a reaction shield makes the staff great for carrying around by default. Who can benefit from Mage Armor? I presume Chandan, anyone else?)

[I was considering taking the 4th level as an arcane caster, probably a Warlock, though a Sorceror with Wild Magic might fit the bill as well. Just not a Wizard. I want to take advantage of Cha as a stat.]

[Makes sense to me to give the staff to Kriv that can utilize it to its full potential. Davroar could use an AC bonus from time to time since he is limited to medium non-metal armour AC12. In lieu of the staff Davroar will take the daggers if no one else wants them. ]

[Ah cool, I thought it was a +1 Staff on top of everything else, in which case it would've been a decent weapon for Davroar and given him an AC boost.

Chandan can benefit from receiving Mage Armour in the morning certainly.]

(OOC - Apologies, but I forgot to add tha Jaliera, as an Arcane Trickdtet, can also fully use the Staff.)

[OOC If Kriv is taking the staff (best idea) then could Jaliera take the scroll? She would also like the spell focus. Otherwise happy with the split. As Jaliera is an Arcane Trickster, she also has some wizrd spells. ]

[Jaliera usually has a bow in hand, so Kriv might be a better user for his hot swapping ability. Shall we say:
