Balthazar

"Obviously it is another of those twig creatures Bern. I will set fire to the place. Best not to risk another fight. Let it burn up with the house." he said, winking at his companions and waiting as he starts to loudly chant a nonsensical phrase in elvish.

Ryssa

Relieved that the last of the twig blights had succumbed to her friends' attacks, the cleric of Lathander turned her attention to the building with the possible inhabitant.

Extending her senses and clutching her holy icon in her left hand, Ryssa reached toward the building and murmured a short prayer as she tried to determine if there was any evidence of magic surrounding it.

With little concern about anyone else, the halfling opens the door to the nearby shack (#4) remotely with an invisible hand he materializes. If there's no explosion, he sneaks in.

Lingo opens the door, but his attempt at stealth is less successful than he likely hoped as the occupant of the room's head turn to follow him as he moves further into the structure.

Lingo and anyone near the door who can see into the house can see it is clean with very simple furniture. A bed made of a rough wooden frame and tightly woven ropes with a straw filled mattress is in one corner while a table and a single chair made of lashed natural wood occupy the center of the room. A canvas pack sits against one wall with a staff leaning next to it. A small kitchen worktable and sink are against the far wall and you can smell the herbs and vegetables lying atop the cutting board.

In the chair sits a gaunt, white bearded human. He is drinking from a carved wooden mug. Steam can be seen drifting from the top of the mug.

As Lingo enters he grunts and nods. "Hello."

He is about to point out that burning the ... possibly inhabited by scared people ... building out of hand was probably a bad idea when Lingo solves the problem by opening the door. The 'human' sounding 'greeting' confirms his instincts. That might be a good discussion for a night around the camp fire, but not for now.

He follows Lingo in ... just in =case= the occupant had more in common with Balthazar

"Good day sir. Are you passing through", he asks seeing pack, "or do you live here?"

He stays outside and listens. He suspects silently that they have found the druid that supposedly came here but time would tell. For now he didn't want to alarm the human with his appearance. Yet he was sure that they had a lot more in common than many of the others in their intrepid band.

After a moment he considers and turns towards the building to see if he can sense any evil.

"Hail and well met!"

Obviously he was obvious so he made the most of it with an overly flamboyant bow as he stated his greeting.

"My apology for intruding. We didn't expect nobody here, but there you are! I'm Lingo and these are my pals. And who might you be?"

I might as well give you this roll right off the bat wink

(OOC - sorry. Ryssa does detect magic, but not on the structure itself, rather from inside. Once the door opens she can see the magic emanates from the man inside as well as some of his equipment.)

Glancing at Bern, the man offers a small smile. "Yes", he answers simply.

Turning back to Lingo as the halfling speaks, he says. "Reidoth."

He takes a sip of his drink and adds, "I see you ignored my signs."

(OOC - To Lingo's best guess the man gives every indication of being a druid.)

Well that wasn't very helpful, he thought at the man's ambiguous answer. His last statement suggesting he had no intention of being helpful.

"So then are you the source of the trouble that has been destroying this town?"

He turns to look at Bern with an angry frown. "No. Are you? I warned away everyone to protect them. Why are you here?"

"We came here to try and ... 'resolve' the problems here. Are you willing to help us do that", he asked.

He shrugs. "Not my place. I am simply keeping an eye on things to make sure it doesn't spread elsewhere, and warning folks away."

(OOC - BTW, as noble sounding as that is, MikeD, that is not why you came here. Just a reminder. Perhaps it's a 'negotiating tactic'? See the "Z- News, Quests, Rumours, Leads, Persons & Items of Interest" thread for Quelline Alderleaf.)

She let Bern take the lead in dealing with what she could only assume to be a druid. In the meantime, she watched the man closely, trying to determine the truthfulness of his statements and whether he offered them any harm.

He listened to the banter inside. Why was it humans didn't know how to talk to each other? They never said what they actually meant, nor what they were thinking.

Giving up he made his way to the door of the small hut. "Forgive my insolent friends here. They don't understand so much. What is your name? Does the name Quelline Alderleaf ring a bell?" His mouth was held in a tight toothed grin when finished. This was not something he wanted to do. He disliked having to even butt his long snout into the conversation. But they were still hunting for Gundren, and the longer it took, the less he thought of their chances of success.

Since Luminmorn seemed to be interested in taking charge, he was happy to step back and let him.

His eyebrow rises at Bern's comment. "There are no people here. Just monsters. People left ages ago."

After a moment, he adds, with a frown. "Not exactly true. I've seen folks in black masks and cloaks on the eastern end of town, but they're not residents. There are no residents."

As Luminmorn enters, his other eyebrow rises. "Reidoth. I said that before."

He shakes his head. "Yes, I know Quelline. Lives down in Phandalin as I recall."

He turns his head to take in the whole group. "Look. Besides the Ash Zombies and Twig Blights I am sure you've seen, and those new strangers, there are dangerous spiders lurking in the ruins near the hill and a Green Dragon has moved into the Tower since the last time I was here. I ask again, why are you here? I suggest you leave before you get yourselves killed."

You get the feeling that was the longest string of words he's put together in years.

"We were sent by Queline. She said that you had come here. We are in search of a friend that has gone missing. His name is Gundren. We were hoping you could tell us of the area, and possibly give us an idea of where to look for him. He was in charge of a caravan that was ambushed by goblins. We followed their trail to a castle. There we captured a mage who worked for someone known as the Spider. We do not know if they are connected, but Gundren had been taken from there before we did." Like the druid, this was one of the longest sets of lines that the taciturn dragonborn had spoken in a long time.

The big folk decided to do some talking. None of that interested the halfling. His eyes focused on the stuff in the cottage. He was looking for some goodies to acquire - as always. Making friends and allies was best left to the others. But then he heard about a dragon. A DRAGON! Dragons had lots of good loot. Rumors were that they slept on piles of gold and gems. He suddenly lost interest in the druid's stuff. What use is a tree branch or a nice plant when there was gold to be had?

"A dragon? In the tower? Do you know where in the tower is his lair? Is it up or down? I ain't never seen a dragon! Is a green dragon good or bad? Do they breath fire or what? Is he old or young or is he a she? Does it have a name?" he rapid-fire asked the druid.

He couldn't control his excitement. The only thing in his head was a vision of a pile of treasure.

He placed his hand on Lingo's shoulder hoping to get the little guy to curb his enthusiasm.
