Kriv

He brought up his maul crosswise to prevent the Bugbear getting past, and stared down the bound captive, smoke curling up from his nostrils.

"Stand. Down. Now. I won't kill you. I will selectively break bones to cripple you but leave you alive, and char the flesh from your extremities to leave you with cauterized stumps, unless you obey. And that's before the Tiefling has her way with you."

As an aside, he added,

"Someone keep a very close eye on Iarno, this would be a perfect distraction if we weren't paying attention."

Jaliera

She is already watching behind them for much the same reason and doesn't want to divert her attention elsewhere.

"Davroar can you watch the wizard please?"

Hopefully the other three can deal with the bugbear.

Mosk

"You are DEAD wizard. DEAD!!!"

With the party aware of the hostility and his hands tied behind his back, it will be most difficult for Mosk to get another shot at Iarno. That does not change his attitude and anger. The bugbear is clearly upset and apparently loyal to someone other than the wizard. Why he's so upset and who he's loyal to is still a mystery.

"Probably. You do realise he hasn't actually betrayed you or your master yet, don't you? Naturally, your attack will push him further away, since we at least want him alive for now. So tell me: Why this? Why now? On what grounds, Mosk One-Eye?"

Davroar

"Sure, Jaliera."

He will move back to the wizards side and makes sure his hands are still tied up. Noticing the swelling from Iarno's broken hand is getting worse, Davroar will not waste a healing spell on him unless absolutely necessary.

Chandan

He listens but keeps searching the chamber, with a growing sense of frustration. There must be records of the Redbrands' other captives. And Chandan has to find them or he will have failed them.

Chandan, throwing caution to the wind, not bothering to check for traps, throws open the lid to the chest and looks inside. There he finds lots of coins (180 sp, 130 gp), a silk pouch with five opaque reddish gems (carnelians worth 10 gp each), two clear lime-green gems (peridots worth 15 gp each), and a white opaque gem (pearl worth 100 gp). There are also two scrolls.

OOC: Also, don't forget that Kalista is holding onto the wizard's staff.

Chandan

Ignoring the treasure, he unfurls the scrolls. They seem a little light for a business record, but perhaps the wizard has very small handwriting?

What is written on the scrolls? That is the question.

Chandan genuinely has no interest in the riches. The gems could be real, they could be glass paste, his only interest is in aiding the Redbrands' victims and ending these nefarious activities.

Nep - Actually Kallista has the wizard's staff since we first encountered him. It's already on her sheet.

Zeim - I got my ladies mixed up and fixed the post wink

The scrolls have long and complex magic symbols written on them. (magic spells: Charm person, Fireball)

Chandan

Disappointed, he hands the scrolls to Kallista.

"Offensive magics. We cannot leave them here. Hmm. Nor the treasure. We can return it to the townspeople."

Chandan bags up the coins and jewels and hands them to Kriv. Then the old monk snoops around the periphery, stopping to examine the other door.

Kriv

Keeping his eye on Mosk, and waiting for an answer from the Bugbear, he accepts the confiscated items and tucks the bags securely away one-handed.

She glances around occasionally to check on the others though most of her attention is vested in protecting their backs.

"Chandan, don't forget to check behind the drapes. They often hide things."

Kallista

She takes the scrolls from Chandan and turns towards Jaliera and Kriv. "I've noticed you both beginning to dabble in the magical arts. Are these spells anything you can use? If not, I can certainly use them."

"Wise woman stabs drapes in passing." He mumbles in reply to Jaliera, nodding to himself and taking the young lady's advice.

Mosk
"Glasstaff wants to save his own neck, stupid lizard. He blame Mosk. I would snap him like a twig if stupid lizard not save him. Stupid lizard blame Mosk too. Evil lizard will murder Mosk. Mosk know this."

Bugbears are not the smartest humanoids and they are fearful brutes. Their scariness is derived from the sensitive trigger which could set them off in an instant. And for them, everything is resolved physically. They run hot or hotter. He has gotten the moment off of his chest and seems to have talked in a calmer tone. Bugbears seem prone to sudden mood changes too.

Davroar

He lets out a breath of relief when Mosk cools down. After hearing what Mosk says, it seems that the bugbear's anger is a mix of loyalty and self-preservation. Just how much of each he will probably never know. Still, it makes Davroar wonder why Mosk got so angry when Iarno mentioned that he did not need the bugbears help.

"Iarno, what would be different if Mosk wasn't here?"

Davroar remembers Sildar saying that Iarno was sent to Phandalin to regain order. It is unclear to him whether Iarno is truly the leader of these Redbrands now, or if at some point the bugbears and this mysterious master co-opted what Iarno had set out to do.

Jaliera

Still maintaining her rear guard, happy that Chandan is checking the drapes, she glances at the scrolls Kallista holds out to her, squinting as she translates the symbols. Her reply is quite enthusiastic.

"Yes.. yes I would be most interested in these spells. Is there any way we could share them?"

Kallista

She shakes her head. "Other than by splitting them up, I don't think so. I have Iarno's Staff, so why don't you and Kriv can each take one?"

Replying first to the Bugbear,

"The wizard's life is no longer his to save, nor yours to take, but entirely on our sufferance, as is yours. You gave your word you would show the way to Cragmaw Keep, and that remains your safeguard. I gave you mine that if you betrayed us I would make you wish you were dead, but as yet, despite your outburst towards the wizard, you have not quite crossed that threshold. See to it that you do not."

In the conversation with Jaliera and Kallista,

"I would be interested in studying them, but in the heat of battle I would be of more use using what I have to hand. Let Jaliera be their custodian, at least until a time more suited to learning."

(OOC - OK, so in fact the new v5 rules allow anyone who can read a written language to cast a spell from a scroll, regardless of your class or level. This means those two spell scrolls could be used by anyone in the group, unless they can't read.

Kriv has bowed out. Jaliera is interested. Kallista is interested, but has taken something already so can pass. That leaves Chandan and Davroar to chime in.)

[ooc: Coming from a barbarian/wilds background I envisioned Davroar being illiterate in all languages other than Druidic, so he will not bother asking for the scrolls. ]
