Kriv lights the way for the party as they uncover the tunnel that young Carp had pointed them to. It turns into a rough-hewn passage that continues for about a hundred feet. One might imagine this tunnel being used to smuggle things in and out of the manor.
The group reaches the end of the passage and when they do, they see that they've entered a large cavern. A cold breeze fills the large natural cavern, carrying with it the fain scent of decaying flesh. A crevasse, which is 5-10 feet wide and 20 feet deep, divides the cavern and is flanked by two rough stone columns that support the twenty-foot-high ceiling. Two arched wooden bridges span the chasm.
Jaliera carries her bow, an arrow ready to be slotted. She moves along with the group, noting cover and shadows that she can slip into if they come across any opposition.
The young druid follows the girl, his nostrils flaring at the faint stench.
"Perhaps there is a burial ground or tombs nearby.. or undead."
"Well either someone scouts a bit or we keep going forward. I'd do it, but stealth isn't in my family. It seems either way we'll have to cross the bridge. All go together or split up on each side?"
He looked thoughtful for a moment, then suddenly Karok began to run towards the deep crevice, taking one last step before jumping into the depth of it.
Not great, of course. Please give me an athletics check DC 15 (since it's a jump, not a fall). If you make it, you take no damage. Otherwise, take:
DM Damage to Karok if he fails Athletics Neptune rolled 2d6 and got 8
Everyone else gets a single action or reaction to the event. Move, use a skill, etc. Talking is free.
DM
Karok suddenly jumps in the steep-sided fissure. for no reason that is apparent to anyone else.
While Kriv is holding a lit torch, everyone realizes that the torch was only needed as you marched through the tunnel. There are torches in sconces around the walls of this cavern. People must come through here regularly.
At the bottom of the crevasse, Karok gets a chill. It feels unnaturally cold here. He landed prone in a jumble of rubble that is mostly well gnawed bones.
Karok Stupidly jumping chasm Nivek rolled d20+2 and got 21
With arms flailing Karok jumps seemingly for no reason, sailing down into the fissure, perhaps some combination of vision, athletic ability or possibly just dumb luck, he lands, rolls, ending up on his back, seemingly unhurt.
With shield and warhammer in hand, he gets to his feet, taking stock of what kind of mess he has gotten himself into.
*Something had to chew on these bones. Best to find it before it finds me.* he thinks.
DM Karok stands but the footing is tenuous (difficult terrain). He looks around and sees all the bones and off to one side he sees a body, half eaten, of a human man. ooc: next round you'll give me a perception check but I want to give the others a chance to do something now.
With the cavern well-lit and an associate committing apparent suicide, he let the torch fall, reaching back for the rope secured to his pack. Either Karok would need a way out or the rest of them would need a way down.
She stay where she is for now, and looks and listens. Something is not right that Karok jumped into a crevasse like that with no explanation. Kallista Perception Zeim rolled d20+3 and got 17
Karok is at the bottom of the crevasse, apparently unharmed. It is not apparent why he jumped. Most of the rest of the party is trying to figure that out. Kriv dropped the torch and took out his rope in anticipation of having to reel the dwarf up. Davroar is to his left and Jaliera to his right. Chandan is near the bridge and Kallista is hanging back looking around.
Full disclosure: DM Stealth Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 17.
Note, when opposing skills are used (stealth vs perception) it's called a contest. When there's a tie, the condition remains the same.
Chandan and Karok, provide me please with a perception roll.
We'll call this the start of the "next round". And while we're at it, please provide initiative rolls - just so I can handle your actions in the proper order
