She nods as Karok asks the question guessing where his thoughts are heading.
"An alternative to the cart is to heal him sufficiently so that he can lead the way through the traps, that should guarantee us a safe passage. Hobbled and gagged he shouldn't be too much of a burden and if he performs well then he can earn his freedom once we have concluded our business.
The goblin might be more motivated if it feels there is a chance to survive. And they do not know what lies ahead. It would be wasteful to get rid of a possible resource too early. She is not that squeamish about the goblin being killed, after all it and its band have just tried to kill them.
"We will need to plan our rescue carefully. They have superior numbers and we know they can be effective. If we can get surprise on our side, that would help."
She feels that they should try to rescue Gundren. Her mentor knows him quite well and would expect her to try. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 | DM
Having gotten as much out of this goblin as needed for now, the group must decide what to do next. It seems evident that they'll need to find this goblin lair, hopefully to rescue Gundren or, at very least to get more information about where he is. The group could, of course, choose to return home and live a sedentary life, but that doesn't seem to be the prevailing attitude.
If they are to seek out this lair they have a dilemma on their hands. They are wounded and some of their abilities are depleted. They can heal up but do they have enough in reserve to tackle a dozen or so goblins? Is a short rest enough or is it more important to be at full strength? | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,063 Likes: 9 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,063 Likes: 9 | Chandan
"Snakes can sleep in birds' nests too. This covert will hide us for an hour. We can clean wounds and bind them.

He nods his assent to the itinerant's words.

"The rest of us need a bit of time. If we need more healing the rest of the day, I'll do what I can. Let's just be more wary from now on."
Perhaps it was a comment about the forward scouts, perhaps just a general comment. Hard to tell for sure.
He sat down and began looking at his own wound.

The group must decide what to do with the Gurgle, their prisoner, the wagon and the oxen that pull the wagon before moving on. The trail that Gurgle pointed out is too narrow to handle the wagon. | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 Administrator | Administrator Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 | Davroar
"I'd prefer a longer rest. I mean we're going up against a lot more than us, and best to be fully prepared?"
He would like to have the longer time to re-memorize his spells now that they know what they are going up against. Looking to each person he hopes no one will object, but if not he is prepared to move on after just a short rest.

"I'll admit, I am torn. I have pledged to see this wagon to its final destination no matter what, and am not comfortable simply abandoning it. Yet I took on this task due to the obligations of my family to Gundren: I would be remiss if we did not help him in his current predicament, especially given that his life is endangered. There may be something in the cargo that he would rather not go unattended, even at the cost of lives, ours or his: This, too we need to bear in mind.
However, the most pressing problem is this. We know he was alive when the vermin last saw him. We know he has been subject to their tender mercies ever since those horses were killed, to say nothing of any injuries sustained in the ambush. We do not know how long he will live under those conditions, but the longer we leave it, the greater the risk. Will he be dead in another seven hours? We connot know the answer. Weigh the risk, and state your position." | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,137 Likes: 8 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,137 Likes: 8 | Kallista
"I might also point out that we have no seen another living soul, other than these Goblins, for days. It is very likely that were we to leave the wagon hidden nearby that it would remain unmolested until we returned." | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 76,500 Likes: 57 Wizop Administrator | Wizop Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 76,500 Likes: 57 | Jaliera
"Putting myself in Gundren's position, I think I would want the group to rescue me above keeping the cargo safe and as Kallista says we can do our best to hide it."
She pauses.
"A short rest and then gathering my spent arrows, then hopefully I will be ready to continue."

Let's call it tomorrow, say 7am ET. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 27,612 Moderator | Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 27,612 | Kriv
He conducted a quick tally.
"Davroar wishes to wait. I would rather hide the cart and act swiftly, As would Jaliera. Karok, Kallista and Chandan seem satisfied with our time recuperating so far but have not been explicit. The consensus seems to be to act sooner rather than later. Any strenuous objections?" | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,137 Likes: 8 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,137 Likes: 8 | Kallista
She looks from person to person, ending with Davroar. "I will go along with Davroar. Without his healing I might not be here now. If he feels he needs to refresh his magic I will support him."
She looks at the others. "The signs show Gundren's horse was killed a day ago. If he is not dead already, then they must be keeping him for a reason and I'd guess he will still be alive tomorrow."
She pauses, "Yes it is a guess, based on nothing but supposition, but the battle here was not easy, and that was against only 5 Goblins. I would hate to go into battle against possibly 3 times that many without all the healing we can have." | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,063 Likes: 9 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,063 Likes: 9 | Chandan
He claps the stopper back into his flagon and smacks his lips.
"Strenuous objection to rest just makes more rest needed." Smiles Chandan, ambling off up the slope and leaning on the haft of his spear. He's looking for a nice spot to sit.
"Besides, there are only provisions in the wagon and Gundren Rockseeker said himself he had more important business." He says over his shoulder.

"Which brings us to three of our number wishing to delay. Kallista, a reasonable supposition given the evidence at hand. So be it: To avoid further deadlock, I accept the will of half the party to stay and throw my weight in with their number. Let us hide the cart and encamp. Three watches, two people per watch. I volunteer for the middle stretch." | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 | The party has decided what to do about rest and that means that you will spend the night before trying to take on the goblin hideout. That gives you some time to decide what to do with Gurgle. | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 Administrator | Administrator Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 | Davroar
He is thankful for the group decision to wait. For the meantime he will help in finding a spot to hide the wagon, and will volunteer for the last shift. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 76,500 Likes: 57 Wizop Administrator | Wizop Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 76,500 Likes: 57 | Jaliera
Happy enough to go with the majority she goes in search of her spent arrows, not to difficult to find as they had hit their targets. Using her dagger she gently frees them, not liking the job but her mentor always says 'waste not, want not'. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,972 Likes: 1 | DM
The group makes camp and spends the a night recuperating from their first battle. For some the recovery is both physical and emotional. It was the first time that their hands had spilled blood.
You start to rise as Lathandar spills morning sunlight onto their encampment. There's a slight chill in the morning and there's a slight mist rising from the grass as rays of sunlight evaporate the dew. The morning calm is broken when Gurgul wakes up. He needs constant reminding to stop whining.
You must now decide on what order they will trek down the path and where Gurgul is in that order. The path is be too narrow to allow two people to safely travel shoulder to shoulder.
1. Marching order please. Single file and double file. I'll use this as a default going forward unless/until you decide to change it. 2. You have a lot of choices of what to do with Gurgul. You can dispatch him, you can keep him with you but explain how you handle that, you can secure him here with the oxen and wagon, you can free him into the wild (don't expect the wagon or oxen to be here when you get back if you do that). | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 27,612 Moderator | Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 27,612 | Kriv
When the goblin whines,
"It's making too much noise. It has become a liability."
He unslung his maul with serpentine grace.

Hurt as it was, the goblin had a pitiful night so Chandan had quietened it down with a smoked draught from his herb kit.
The old man has already sung it a dirge and eased its pain for the night, but the time for Gurgle to answer for its misdeeds is now at hand.
"Drink and win!" Chandan gives Gurgle the traditional toast for luck where he comes from and swallows a mouthful of crisp, clear wine.

He had no issues with dispatching the goblin. He'd made no bargain with it and as far as he knew no promises had been made. He'd spent enough years fighting to be hardened to death.
"I prefer to be close to the front. I am no scout, but I can protect myself."

"Good for me." She says to the Dragonborn. "It has told us what it could, I am sure. Let's leave its body far enough from the oxen to draw off any scavengers or predators who might wander by." | | | | Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 Administrator | Administrator Joined: Jun 2002 Posts: 10,292 | Davroar
The goblin had sealed its fate by attacking them. His choice would be to let it live and let nature take its course, with it more than likely becoming prey to the local wolves. The practical and merciful decision would be to kill the goblin. Davroar keeps his tongue silent on the matter, and instead will busy himself in breaking camp.
