Also a quick note if it's not obvious.

I'm still DM'ing a lot of stuff and we haven't split parties yet.... but hopefully most of you are aware that in the near future we'll be temporarily parting ways with two teams of five, reuniting only when we've killed off enough to make the combination... uh, wait, sorry, am I revealing too much? Ok... yeah, joking. Maybe. wink

Anyway... just wanted to clarify a point. When I'm posting as Aubric, I'm a player, not the DM. I appreciate your paranoia that every interaction is part of a plot, but... well... that's up to Neptune. smile

As Aubric (and whatever portion of the party he ends up joining) I'll be subject to Nep's whims. As far as other NPCs, they're still me DM'ing things and leading you to a hopefully exciting holiday season.

Now where is my brandy?

Aqua - Have you predetermined the split or is it up to each pc to decide where they are heading? Zhu has business in Silverymoon so she'd go with whichever group can include that on their itinerary.

I think Nep has started PMs with each group. The Emerald Enclave trio have a specific task and will have two tag-alongs. Everyone else is in the other group.

OK, so it's just a subset of folks.

But as I mentioned:
1. The 3 in the Emerald Enclave have a task. I'm DM'ing that group. Two more will join them and that may have been discussed in recent RP.
2. I'm joining the game in the other group Nep is DM'ing.

I don't think it's officially set in stone which two will join the EE group, but there's two that Nep and I think it will be. I expect we could be convinced otherwise.

Let's try and clear up the fog a bit. There's a natural division and I think you'll see it makes some sense. Individual missions and objectives helped make it simple.

There are 3 members of the Emerald Enclave: Bern, Davroar and Zindra. They are open about that. Jaliera is not about to leave Davroar's side and she's friends with Pavel. There's that five and since the doppelganger is Bern's problem, and I'm playing Zindra that quintet will be Aquadyne's to deal with.

There are several in the party with reasons to track down Forkbeard and make their way to Everlund and eventually Silverymoon. Zhu, Kriv, Sindar, Arus and Aubric will head the other way and will have to deal with me a DM.

This is not designed to be a permanent break up. Meri and Pippin head one way, Legolas, Aragorn and Gimli head elsewhere and Frodo goes off with Samwise. Eventually they find their way back to each other.

Hope you're all enjoying your holidays! Two OOC notes for you.

1. As Aubric (remember he's PC, not NPC!) I've described him using small ducks to mark the map. You may be interested to know that my daughter participated in one of those white-elephant gift exchanges and ended up with 100 miniature ducks which have infested my house. I'm finding them everywhere. The kids are having fun "hiding them" (not really hidden, just appearing in odd places like atop light switches, gazing at artwork, surrounding my whiskey bar, etc.) all over the place. It's worse than elf-on-a-shelf. It reminds me of this brilliant sketch which is probably where they got the idea.

2. As your friendly GM, I'm offering you as a Christmas/Hannukah/Midwinter/Festivus gift, this tidbit about identifying items that you may or may not find any use for while you're otherwise bored sitting around an inn. From the Dungeon Master's Guide page 136:

Identifying a Magic Item

Some magic items are indistinguishable from their non magical counterparts, whereas other magic items display their magical nature conspicuously. Whatever a magic item’s appearance, handling the item is enough to give a character a sense that something is extraordinary about it. Discovering a magic item’s properties isn't automatic, however.

The identify spell is the fastest way to reveal an item’s properties. Alternatively, a character can focus on one magic item during a short rest, while being in physical contact with the item. At the end of the rest, the character learns the item's properties, as well as how to use them. Potions are an exception; a little taste is enough to tell the taster what the potion does. Sometimes a magic item carries a clue to its properties. The command word to activate a ring might be etched in tiny letters inside it, or a feathered design might suggest that its a ring of feather falling.

Wearing or experimenting with an item can also offer hints about its properties. For example, if a character puts on a ring of jumping, you could say. "Your steps feel strangely springy." Perhaps the character then jumps up and down to see what happens. You then say the character jumps unexpectedly high.

Variant; More Difficult Identification

If you prefer magic items to have a greater mystique, consider removing the ability to identify the properties of a magic item during a short rest, and require the identify spell, experimentation, or both to reveal what a magic item does.

Attunement

Some magic items require a creature to form a bond with them before their magical properties can be used. This bond is called attunement, and certain items have a prerequisite for it. If the prerequisite is a class, a creature must be a member of that class to attune to the item. (If the class is a spellcasting class, a monster qualifies if that monster has spell slots and uses that class's spell list.)

Without becoming attuned to an item that requires attunement, a creature gains only its nonmagical benefits, unless its description states otherwise. For example, a magic shield that requires attunement provides the benefits of a normal shield to a creature not attuned to it, but none of its magical properties.

Attuning to an item requires a creature to spend a short rest focused on only that item while being in physical contact with it (this can't be the same short rest used to learn the item's properties). This focus can take the form of weapon practice (for a weapon), meditation (for a wondrous item), or some other appropriate activity. If the short rest is interrupted, the attunement attempt fails. Otherwise, at the end of the short rest, the creature gains an intuitive understanding of how to activate any magical properties of the item, including any necessary command words.

An item can be attuned to only one creature at a time and a creature can he attuned to no more than three magic items at a time. Any attempt to attune to a fourth item fails; the creature must end its attunement to an item first. Additionally, a creature can’t attune to more than one copy of an item. For example, a creature can’t attune to more than one ring of Protection at a time.

A creature's attunement to an item ends if the creature no longer satisfies the prerequisites for attunement, if the item has been more than 100 feet away for at least 24 hours, if the creature dies, or if another creature attunes to the item. A creature can also voluntarily end attunement by spending another Short Rest focused on the item, unless the item is cursed.

Cursed Items

Some magic items bear curses that bedevil their users, sometimes long after a user has stopped using an item. A magic item's description specifies whether the item is cursed. Most methods of identifying items, including the identify spell, fail to reveal such a curse, although lore might hint at it.

Yes, but identification requires "being in physical contact with the item" and the lightning-associated rune was put in a pack and nobody has mentioned focusing on it for an hour.

Certainly if there were a risk of being cursed by such activity, your DM wouldn't just assume someone did it, would they? wink
