It has been a long four days of travel, but as the sun edges toward the western horizon behind the party, bathing the landscape in a warm, golden light, the eastern horizon slowly transforms from a hint of something, to a shimmering mirage, to finally, definitely a well-maintained settlement.

Well-maintained is a relative term. The village ahead is walled, with 20-foot high stone walls surrounding it, although bits and pieces here and there are showing signs of age. The wall is still serviceable, however.

In the last mile before the city, a road can be seen branching off to the north toward a small, weather-beaten wooden hut with a thatched roof. The road leads to a wide gate entering the village proper, flanked by two armored men one would assume are keeping guard duty.

She sends Whisper aloft to take a closer look at the hut and then to fly over the village,

"Take no risks" she cautions her friend.

He spent some time as they approached, looking things over. The wall looked as if it had been there for some time and he was curious about the hut ... Why it was outside the wall.

He looks over the large wall that looks to be surrounding the entire town and says, "That merchant we met outside of Yartar, said Bern's twin was buying weapons here. Guess we should be careful."

She simply smiles at all of the precautions being taken but as their guide on this road the scout chimes in.

"Calling Horns is a pretty isolated village out here on the edge of the Evermoors but it should be pretty safe here. Tamalin Zoar built up this town from being just a small roadside inn into what you see here now. Her deputies sees to that protection. Let's stay on their good side. Maybe we can learn something here."

He stretches his back and casts his eye about, including their six, before recounting their travel plans:

"Overnight at the inn here, then Noanar's Hold tomorrow."

The triton ponders a moment, perhaps wondering how best to enjoy these next two nights of civilisation.

"After that Bern and Davroar depart and we have at least four nights on the road before the rendezvous at Olostin's Hold."

She glances at the cottage as they pass it by, musing about the various possible reasons someone would choose, or be forced to, live outside the walls. She can think of several. As they get closer, she frowns. Whoever is in charge of this village's defenses went to all the trouble to build a wall and then allowed the forest to close on that wall to the point any enemy who wanted to could walk right up unseen. It is normal military practice to clear cut the woods to a distance of more than a bowshot. But it is not her village. She'll offer advice if asked, but as Zindra said best not to get on the defenders bad side by criticizing.

She pulls her mount to a halt in front of the Gate Guards and nods politely, waiting for them to wave them thru or ask questions.

Whisper flies ahead to gather whatever intelligence it can with its keen, avian eyes, relaying images to Jaliera. Inside the walls the settlement is large enough to support a hundred-or-so locals, but its position at the junction of Evermoor Way and Jundar's Pass makes it a prime location for travelers passing through to stop, rest, and/or trade. Small tracts of farmland, a small market area, and a few dozen homes are arranged neatly within the walls, strong enough to keep out random wildlife but likely not able to stop any organized attack.

The lone hut outside the walls does indeed exhibit signs of recent occupation. Whisper relays an image of a faint wisp of smoke rising from a crooked chimney, suggesting that a fire burns within although there is no way to discern whether anyone is currently inside or what they might be doing. Around the hut, the owl sees scattered belongings – a pair of well-worn boots left haphazardly on the doorstep, a partially unrolled bedroll propped up against one side of the hut, and a small garden of herbs and vegetables growing nearby, suggesting a somewhat self-sufficient dweller... and one not concerned about his or her safety from whatever the village-dwellers think the walls protect them from.

The pair of guards (or whatever they are) at the gate have definitely noticed the approaching party, but don't appear to be doing anything different, flanking the opening and apparently conversing with each other.

As the party approaches the gates, they are welcomed... if that's a word, by the pair of guards, although it's not clear the two are on the same page as far as what is required of travelers to enter.

The first guard, a burly and bearded fellow clad in chainmail, has a gruff demeanor and a suspicious squint in his eye. With a grumble, he thrusts his hand forward and declares, "Stop there, travelers! If you wish to enter Calling Horns, you'll need to pay the toll. Five gold pieces from each of you, and you may pass!"

His companion, a lanky and wiry guard with a perpetual smirk, responds with a hearty laugh. "Grommund, you old mountain of coin! Always trying to fill your purse! No, no, my dear travelers, you don't have to pay a thing," he says, extending his hand in a friendly greeting. "I'm Seraphim Quickfoot, and all we need is a bit of information. Any news, rumors, or tales from the outside world? That's payment enough for us!"

Grommund grumbles in protest, "Seraphim, you daft fool! We should be collecting the toll!"

Seraphim waves him off dismissively. "Oh, come now, Grommund, where's your sense of adventure? These folks might have some juicy tidbits to share!"

The back-and-forth continues. It seems likely neither would actually stop the party from passing by, although their gold vs. gossip debate is somewhat entertaining, even attracting some young villagers inside the wall to giggle at it. Still, they're not completely ignoring the party and would likely actually respond to any questions raised.

He starts to turn away when the first 'gate keeper' starts talking about an 'entry fee', but turns back when the other speaks. But he is not convinced that he wouldn't be happier ... =and= safer ... sleeping outside the walls. He decides to wait and hear what the others think.

He smiles at both men. Not willing to pay 5 pg for the comforts of civilization just to enter. Yet not showing his feelings either.

"My good man, we have tales to tell. Would you prefer them in song tonight at the local inn over a libation or here and now in the street?" He swings his lyre forward clearly willing to entertain the pair of them as is decided.

"I am Sindar a humble wandering minstrel always happy to entertain for my keep," he finishes with a modest bow.

Seraphim smiles at the bard. "Songs tonight at the inn!" he grins, turning to his gruff companion. "C'mon Grommund, how about you settle for an ale? You know Tamalin will appreciate their business."

Grommund huffs, still looking surly. "Fine," he mutters. "You're lucky my friend is here, 's all I gotta say."

She listens to the exchange, then tilts her head back over her shoulder. "Might I ask who lives there?", she points to the house outside the walls. "I am curious why they choose to not live in the town with everyone else."

Grommund is quick to answer Zhu. "A witch," he says, adding, "Ain't right in the head. Don't go there, all sorts of magic around that hut."

"Nonsense," Seraphim counters his companion. "Wouldn't hurt a fly, and she's the only one in town if you need something enchanted."

"The blacksmith enchants his weapons," Grommond fires back.

"He buys them from somewhere else," Seraphim replies. "You think he's got magic?"

"I seen people get attacked by.... somethin' approaching that hut," Grommond answers.

"I've seen people walk right up and have tea," Seraphim counters.

Grommund huffs. "I still say she ain't right in the head," he states firmly, crossing his arms across his chest.

"That, my friend, we can agree on," Seraphim answers with a firm nod.

It seems Zhu has her answer. Or two of them, if she can pick which one.

"Is the blacksmith a dwarf?"

It might fit with the rumours she has heard? As to the witch, no reason to visit right now but somehow she expects they will find a reason before too long.

Grommund's stern demeanor breaks and he lets out a hearty laugh. "Are any blacksmiths not..." he begins, before Seraphim, suddenly being the stern one, stops him with a shushing sound.

Seraphim turns to the adventurers, "No more questions unless you're going to answer ours..." he says, then gestures at his companion. "Or you can pay his price if you wanna keep your secrets."

Her eyebrow rises as the label 'Witch', and she turns her head to look more closely at the cabin. That is definitely a place she plans to visit, but no rush right now. She thanks the guards and flicks her reins to move into the village and towards the indicated inn.

"And stories we will share and you can ask me about dwarf blacksmiths then," Seraphim replies with somewhat of a smirk. "If you don't see him on the way to the inn."

His friendly demeanor slowly returns much as Grommund resumes a more stern expression.

"But let this be your first welcome to this town. We thrive on trade. We buy and sell information. We buy and sell food and libtations. We buy and sell weapons. We buy and sell protection and safety. We buy and sell more personal entertainment for those so inclined. Treat fairly and you'll be treated fairly."

He gestures toward the gate, indicating the party is welcome to enter.

As the party passes, Seraphim adds, "Market straight ahead if you need a blacksmith. Take your first left for the inn."

The group passes through the gates, into the lively bustle of this small settlement. The late afternoon sun casts long shadows on the various buildings, around, most of them cottages, with a few stables or barns. The sight and smell of agriculture indicates the wall is probably more to protect them from critters rather than an army.

The road forks; a short distance straight ahead is a vibrant market square where a dozen or so vendors attend their carts under colorful awnings. The tantalizing scents of roasted meats, freshly baked bread, and exotic spices drift your direction. Merchants call out enthusiastically, hawking their wares to passersby. About twice as many shoppers as merchants browse the stalls, some haggling enthusiastically. A general air of commerce and camaraderie prevails.

To the left, the road gently ascends a small hill, leading you toward a large and inviting-looking inn. The distant sounds of laughter and lively music drift from the inn, promising a warm and hospitable atmosphere within.

As most of the party has indicated the inn as their destination, they head that way, where stables are available for their mounts.

He takes in the liveliness of the local market and is pleasantly surprised with it all. Dismounting as they approach the inn, he will help Jaliera in taking her mount with his to the stable and will ask her, "I can take the horses if you want and grab us a decent table?"

While the gentle slope on the road approaching the inn isn't a challenge to anyone, the slight change in elevation appears more relevant as they approach the inn. It's situated on the highest ground in the area, with a clear view over the walls to the roads approaching from the east, west, and south, and the Evermoors to the north.

The inn is large, probably able to house as many or more as all the scattered cottages inside the walls, implying that the permanent residency here may be a minority. It has two stories above ground, with a few guards visible on the upper story keeping an eye on things. They certainly don't look threatening, but combined with the guards at the gate, they seem to give the impression that "the law" is present if needed, but is mostly trying to keep the place safe for commerce.

The inn forms a "U" shape with the stables on the eastern flank, which happens to be downwind today (and most days). The western side appears to be the source of song, laughter, and an occasional curse of a gambler finding him or her self at the wrong end of a wager.

The party can enter from inside the enclosed portion, passing a small garden furnishing the inn with fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices.

So far, they've mostly blended in with the dozens of other travelers coming, going, and staying for a few days to replenish supplies in one of the few places along this stretch of Evermoor Way that seems slightly safer than the open road. But as they enter, no doubt all eyes will be on them...

"Sure, I can do that."

She smiles at him and adds "And if you can find out his name, that would be good."

She heads into the inn, noting firstly the garden and secondly the lively atmosphere as she heads towards the bar, looking for a large table on the way and if there is table service or not.

Though his steed isn't strictly in need of care, Arus feels that the celestial warhorse should experience stabling and grooming on the Prime Material Plane. When on Faerûn do as the Faerûnians do. As a triton, Arus follows the same creedo.

So once the steed is sorted, Arus follows his companions into the inn to secure their overnight lodging.

"Room, board and stabling for the night, if you please." he says to the attendant.

For those who head to the stables with their mounts, they are welcomed by the stablehands.

A man who introduces himself as Brom is a burly and weathered man with a salt-and-pepper beard. He's the head stablehand, responsible for overseeing the operation. His leather apron is stained with hay and mud, and he has a calm, reassuring presence. He also introduces his wife Elyra, a middle-aged woman with a warm smile, who is in the process of feeding and grooming some of the other horses already here when the party arrives.

Two younger stablehands are present as well, a teenage boy apparently named "Finn" when Brom calls him from his current task. His shovel indicates he has the unenviable task of cleaning the stalls, but by the looks of the available stalls he seems to do a good job of it. And there's a younger girl, probably about twelve and somewhat shy, whom Elyra addresses as Lily. She may not be doing any actual practical work, but she is keeping a few horses company and clearly loves being here.

The stablehands offer a range of services to the party. Travelers can choose to pay for their horses to be taken care of, including feeding, grooming, and stall cleaning, or they can choose to tend to their steeds themselves. Feed, hay, and fresh water are available for sale.

On the opposite side of the stables from where the party entered, a door opens to a long hallway toward the dining area of the inn.

For those who arrive in the inn, it seems a warm and hospitable atmosphere. The hum of conversation and the clinking of tankards fills the air. The common room they step into is spacious, with about twenty sturdy wooden tables, slightly over half of which are occupied by a mix of travelers, locals, and adventurers, leaving the party their choice of a half-dozen or so tables, where they can dine together, or perhaps even split up.

Two barmaids, one with fiery red hair and the other with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, deftly weave between the tables, taking orders and delivering frothy mugs of ale, hearty plates of food, and mugs of steaming cider. The redhead nods toward the party as they enter, offering a "be right with ya!" as she nods in the direction of some empty tables, indicating they are welcome to take a seat.

The patrons at the tables appear content, savoring their meals and engaging in animated conversations. In the vicinity of their parents at one of the tables, a group of younger children is engaged in a lively tag-based game. Their laughter and playful antics add an element of youthful energy to the room.

To the south of the common room, there are a couple of curtained-off rooms where the sounds of revelry can be heard. Laughter mingles with the strains of lively music, hinting at a private celebration in progress.

Near one of the walls, the innkeeper, a stout and welcoming figure with a friendly smile, maintains a wooden desk. On the desk rests the customary guestbook, where travelers can record their names and the number of rooms they require. The innkeeper is attentive, ready to assist new arrivals and answer any questions they may have.

The air is filled with the comforting scents of freshly baked bread, roasting meats, and a hint of herbs and spices. The inn's hearth crackles with a warm and inviting fire, casting a cozy glow over the room.

She sees Arus heading to the innkeeper so she dodges around the 'tag' children, smiling at their antics, to claim a table large enough to seat them all. Seeing there is one chair short, she grabs a free one on route and adds it to their table. Then she sits and waits for the others to catch up.

He takes a moment to look around the stable as he enters. He smiled. It was surprisingly clean and 'well kept' ... and the 'staff' seemed to like what they were doing. It seemed a good place to leave the mounts ... better than many places he had used.

"We would like to stable some horses. What do you charge?"

"Prices are here," Brom gestures to a sign advertising stable costs. "Two silver for basic services, but you can always ask for special requests." He gestures at the young girl. "Lily'll keep 'em brushed for free, as well, if you give her their names."

He looks to the sign wondering how it was that his life had changed so much. It was almost as much to stable his horse as it was what he lived on for a month when he was younger. He didn't begrudge it. It was something interesting to muse on.

He slipped two silvers deftly into his hand and offered them. "Here is for the basic services for my mount. I will take a peek at her when I return, and should there be extra care given, I will compensate with a nice tip." The half-elf offered a winning smile.

Looking up at the prices Brom has indicated, he will say, "I like to take care of my horses, so I'll just pay for the feed and hay."

He will take the opportunity here to cast his spell speak to animals to ask Jaliera's horse if he/she has a preferred name. He will repeat this for his horse too since both were originally taken from the bandits.
Whether the horses give him a name or not, Davroar will add, "Oh, if there is any animal that is hurt, perhaps I can help. For free." Davroar is happy when he can help hard working folk like he sees here.

He pulls out a couple of silvers and hands them to Brom with a nod. But he plans to stop by later and see what sort of a job has been done.

While not a Druid, as an Eladrin she has a natural affinity for animals and so pays for all the needed care while still anticipating doing some of it herself.

"We would also like some rooms......" She lifts an eyebrow questioningly.

In the stables.

The lead stablehand laughs. "Not sleeping in a stall here?" he says, gesturing to a rather clean pile of hay.

"Brom!" Elyra chides in a stern voice, although her eyes give away some mirth at his tease. "You'll find a desk in the common room that can help you there. Lots of rooms of every size," she offers. "You can go down that hallway," she gestures to the opposite end of the stables as where the group entered "or go back out across the garden if you like."

In the common room.

Jaliera is the only one to bypass the stables, and is successful at claiming a table large enough for the party. Shortly after being seated, the redhead comes over, noticing the additional chair being moved. "Expecting others? You want anything now or should I come back?"

He looks a bit sad at the stablehand's comment. "I had been considering that ... since I don't like to let my mount alone. But there doesn't seem to be any 'bar service' out here", he finished then grinned.

She is coughing as the redheaded barmaid approaches.

"Yes there are a group of us just sorting out horses, so we will wait to order food together. I would like a drink though, I'm a little dry. What do you have that is not alcohol? And what is on the food menu tonight? I can then let the other know."

She smiles at the barmaid.

The scout joins Bern and Davroar as they head to the stables. There were more horses than two could guide there.

"Of course!" the woman serving Jaliera responds. "We have freshly squeezed fruit juices, including apple, orange, and a delightful berry blend. If you're in the mood for something a bit more refreshing, we also have chilled water infused with cucumber and mint, which is quite popular on warm evenings like this."

She continues, "As for tonight's menu, the popular choice is a hearty vegetable stew with crusty bread, mushrooms, and a grilled vegetable platter. For those who prefer meat, we're serving roasted chicken with potatoes. A few more choices than that... if you'd like, I can bring you a menu card so you can share with your friends. Would you like to order that drink now or wait for the menu?"

Meanwhile, in the stables, the group of four stablehands attends to the rest of the party. They're happy and eager to help when asked or stay out of the way if requested. The prices are fair, the place looks reputable, and the girl Lily appears to not actually work there, just loves talking to and brushing horses. Or maybe she's keen on Finn, as she glances his way often, but he seems oblivious to her presence.

Davroar's offer of healing is met with a raised brow and an appraising nod. "We do have one here who's got a limp, but I'd want to talk to his owner before you did anything," Brom replies.

His horse arranged for, he walks through the door that was pointed out to enter the common room of the inn.

He looks about for anyone he knows, and spotting Jaleria, he starts in her direction.

He smiled at the girl that seemed to like horses but was not paid for her efforts. He pulled out a silver and held out his hand. "If you could make sure they feel loved, I would appreciate it", he said offering her the coin. "They will like it", he said indicating the horses with a nod of his head, "and I would appreciate it as well."

Lily's eyes widen at the offer of a coin from Bern and it may not be possible for her smile to get any bigger. "Yessir!" she replies immediately. "I'll take extra time on all your horses, I promise!"

She turns and holds up the coin to Elyra, who offers a warm, "Well done, Lily. Need me to keep that safe for you or are you going off to the market now to buy something with it?"

"I... uh...." Lily looks torn. She just promised. "I'll go right after I brush all these horses!"

"Right," Elyra replies. "Finn, go with her when she's done, so she stays out of trouble," she orders the boy, her eyes twinkling.

Lily grins even more.

To Brom he says with a smile, "Find me inside then after you talk to the owner and I'll gladly help."

Leaving the stables he will head inside to find Jaliera to see her sitting with a stranger. His eyes narrow in suspicion, but so far it seems she is not in any danger. Approaching the table he says, "Our horses are stabled. Who's this?"

As the party taking care of horses arrives in the common room, they see Jaliera holding a table for them, and the innkeeper at a desk near the wall, and somewhat the same scene earlier described.

Horses cared for, the remainder of the party arrives in the common room, some earlier as they simply paid for services, and others slightly later as they exchange various pleasantries with the stablehands.

Arus and Zhu are among the first to arrive, heading for the innkeeper's desk to arrange rooms for themselves and the rest of the party. They may be surprised to find out the inn is rather large, with a full basement below the floor they're on, mostly with rooms for rent, as well as a kitchen and store rooms. Rooms are available at reasonable prices, with a simple bed for the thrifty, and more luxurious surroundings or larger beds for those so inclined to share a bed with a companion. A wink implies companionship is also available for a fee for anyone who doesn't have one.

At the table, Jaliera seems to be conversing with a stranger that nobody has met, with Davroar being the first to approach and inquire about him.

And there are plenty of others in the tavern, from a mixed race table gambling to various families dining to various individuals apparently drinking alone and observing the crowd to pairs or threesomes engaged in their own private conversations.

The bar is serving drinks, but no one is seated there; a pair of barmaids are circulating among the tables handling the orders from there and the kitchens.

"Good. Did you get a name?"

Then she turns to her companion.

"This is Pavel. We briefly made acquaintance in Phandalin."

The bartender gives Bern a stern look. "I recommend you tip more than a copper next time," he replies, and moves to the other end of the bar, studiously ignoring him.

When Zindra walks into the inn and sees Jaliera talking to a stranger she simply raises her eyebrows with surprise and mutters, "interesting..."

She turns her attention over to Bern who is having a hard time with the bartender.

"What's that all about? You haven't been here before. Do you think he took you for someone else?"

He shrugged. "It didn't sound like he was reacting to me 'personally' ... rather that he is just not a very good bartender", he said with a wicked grin. "But maybe you could 'chat him up' after I get a drink and go to the table."

"Yeah. I'll do that. I'll use my girlish charm!" she says, lifting an arm up and smelling her pit. "Not too bad."

She interlocks her arm into Berns by the elbow and pulls him with her towards the bar.

"Hey, barkeep, over here!" she waves.

When he returns she says "I wanna apologize for this guy. He's been a bit wonky lately. A beer for me and one for him too. And here's an extra gold for you to make up for that copper! His memory ain't too good. Can you remind my pal when he insulted you like that?"

He rises when Davroar approaches to move to another chair and make room for the man who appeared to be a druid. He recognized the man from briefly seeing the party before the festivities celebrating the "Heroes of Phandalin."

"Well met" says to the man. "Any of the other still "Heroes of Phandalin" traveling with you? From there myself I worked at the Miner's Exchange for Halia. Not often you get to see people you recognize so far from the place you call home."

As the party arrives at the table, the red-headed barmaid is already on her way over with a few menu cards and the fruit juice Jaliera ordered. "Here you are," she smiles, clearly giving friendlier service to the crowd than the bartender gave Bern. "Let me know if you need anything, I just need to fetch drinks for another table."

Meanwhile, at the bar, Zindra's offer of a gold piece brings a raised eyebrow from the bartender, who graciously accepts it and as is customary for such an exchange, provides the requested information. "He was in here a week or two ago," the man tells Zindra. "Sat over there," he gestures toward the far corner of the room, "with a dwarf and some other ne'er-do-wells. They all clearly had coin, and were rude enough to my girls," he gestures broadly at his pair of serving girls "that I served 'em myself. Three rounds for a copper tip."

He turns his stern gaze on Bern. "And don't deny it, I don't forget a face."

"I don't doubt it. However, you were deceived. This man here has just come into town with me from Yartar. We were there just a few nights ago and before that we were in Triboar. I am absolutely sure that you saw someone that looks like my friend because there is a master makeup artist, he uses magic I believe, to impersonate this fine man!"

The bartender looks unconvinced by Zindra's argument, stopping just short of rolling his eyes at the convoluted explanation. But holding a grudge is bad business.

"Look, you've made it right," he tells Zindra, holding up the gold coin and turning to give Bern a curt nod. "So I'll forget what happened. If you're really someone else I'll believe it when I see it. Now.... did you two want a beverage?"

He gives Pavel a smile and says, "Hello. You're aways from Phandalin too. We just arrived. Jaliera you know. I'm Davroar", he looks up and points to Kriv as he enters, "it's hard not to miss Kriv, and Bern was just with me at the stables." Davroar does a quick look around to find Bern and quickly adds, "Ahh, he's over at the bar."

Thinking back for a moment he adds, "The other's... old man Chandan left sometime before the celebration ended. Haven't seen him since. Ryssa went back home to train I think. Luminmorn, still in Phandalin when you left?"

He won't forget Jaliera's question about her horses name, but for the moment will wait for Pavel to answer.

Pavel looked over at the bar where the bartender seemed to be angry at one of the travelers. Frowning for a second before answering the question

"Luminmorn... one of the heroes and your friend at the manor? I worked with him a few times when we were clearing out the mines. He was still there when I left. I think I was on the next caravan out of Phandalin to Triboar so last I saw of him he was fine which was only a few days after all of you left the town. He was still widely popular and well respected the last I saw of him."

"Speaking of following you, I can say the smoke was still rising from the ashes following that giant attack at Triboar when I got there. That looked like some nasty work. Glad all of you made it alright."

As they are talking Pavel's eyes flit between Davroar and the man that Davroar had indicated was Bern. Following the near altercation Pavel looked over at the two, "He normally get that reaction from people you meet?"

She nods thanks for the information about the rooms. "I expect we'll need 2..., no, make that three rooms", she says, with a quick glance at Davroar and Jaliera. "I am fine with the current company, but I'll ask my companions if they desire any."

Moving back to where the others are gathered she relays the information. Upon hearing some of the banter about the Doppleganger she tries to think back to their earlier stops where he put in an appearance to try to determine if they are gaining or losing any ground on catching up to him.

The innkeeper makes some notations in his guest book, assigning three comfortable rooms and quoting a fair price. "How long will you all be staying?" he inquires, as he opens a drawer to find the keys for the assigned rooms.

The bartender serves a pair of beers to Bern and Zindra, not asking for any additional payment; apparently the gold piece sufficed for both forgiveness and as paymente for the round.

The red-headed barmaid returns to the table with a smile, looking around to those gathered. "Drinks? Food? Entertainment?"

And a young boy about ten or eleven years old trots over to the table from some table nearby. It's not obvious who he's with, but with the handful of children milling about the place it doesn't seem his visit to the new table is of concern to anyone. "You're the heroes of Phandelver?" he asks, wide-eyed, looking around the group. "And I heard you made giants run away in Triboar! Which one of you made the thunder thing happen and disappeared? That magic sounds sooooooo aweseome!"

She clanks her goblet against Bern's. Some drops of foam fell to the floor before she took a big gulp. "Ahhhh! Great after a long day on the road!"

Then she turns back to the barkeep.

"Thanks!" she says with a big smile aas she raises her flagon a second time. This time towards the bartender. "Hey. I know my story is weak. I mean why impersonate this guy here?" She turns and sniffs Bern and then shakes her head in mock disgust. "Did that guy that was here a tenday ago smell like Bern too? Look. I'm interested in what that guy was doing. And what about that dwarf? Did he have a name? Do you know where either of them were going after here?"

"Weevil," the bartender replies, reaching for a rag to wipe up the bar in front of Zindra. "Forkbeard," he adds. "Sometimes people show up here with wanted posters for 'him, but he's got more friends here than enemies, I guess."

Taking a step back, he adds, "as for the rest, can't say I know. But if you're lookin' for information in this town, there's no better source than the market's seamstress. Aye, that's right, old Miss Abigail. She's got a tongue sharper than any dagger, and she knows every thread of gossip that passes through these parts."

He leans against the bar. "But mind you, she's a bit... eccentric, let's say. Finds joy in patching up folks and unraveling their stories all in one go. She's usually set up near the fruit stand. Can't miss it. Probably closed for the day but you'll catch her tomorrow no doubt."

Davroar

He shakes his head and replies to Pavel, "No. Bern has a doppleganger that's giving him, and us, troubles."

Davroar smiles his thanks to Jaliera for handing him a menu as he mumbles, "Mmm, food...", as he looks at the menu trying to decide what to order while his empty stomach grumbles even more at him. When the barmaid arrives he will ask for the vegetable stew and a mead.

The attack on Triboar was chaotic and Davroar will ignore the young boy's question as he does not know who had casted the loud spell. It was probably Zhu or Sindar, but he will let either of them to answer.

With his food and drink order done with, he casually taps his fingers over Jaliera's back of her hand to grab her attention and says, "About your horse's name. The bandit that last rode her, called her a name I shouldn't say in front of children. I then asked what name she would like, and the mare describe to me her earliest memory of growing up in a wide field of tall grass and sunflowers with four siblings that she would run around with amongst her herd. I suspect she wants a name that will bring back memories of happier times."

"Thanks."

She smiles at Davroar.

"Think she would like the name 'Meadow'? And I'll have the stew too! With a hunk of bread too I think. Hungry.. Are you eating with us Pavel? Good to hear Luminmorn is doing well."

Then she is distracted by the child. She turns to him smiling. "Who are you with lad?"

Kriv

The Dragonborn noble spent a while listening to the goings-on around, before beckoning for a beverage and taking a seat. It seemed Zindra had the hunt for the doppelganger well in hand, so he turned his attention to a child with the bravery and inquisitiveness to approach a group of hardened adventurers. Traits that could take one far, or all too short a way. Jaliera's question was astute, so he awaited its resolution before addressing the boy. There was always the possibility that the Doppelganger was brazenly seeking intelligence on the group, but the information requested was innocent enough.

"You've an interest in the Art, boy?" Kriv punctuated the question with a cantrip of flame safely dancing over the claws of one hand. "I believe the effect you describe falls under my colleague's purview," He gestured towards Zhu, "But there were at least three of us slinging various kinds of magic around, myself included. I was somewhat preoccupied at the time so can't be completely certain to whom you refer."

She smiles softly at the boy and his enthusiasm and nods as Kriv indicates the effects the boy mentioned were probably her doing and that several of them used magic during that fight.

He remains with the group as the party slowly gathers at table. Observing them and their interactions.

At the boy's approach he quietly observes the party as they address the child.

After a bit he addresses the party. "When I left Phandalin they were still talking about the doppleganger. I take it you keep running into it along your travels?"

He sat quietly, trying to maintain a 'low profile' in case there were others that his nemesis had offended.

She could see that the conversation was bothering Bern and he had good reason to be upset, but this was a solid lead. Zindra doesn't recognize the name of that dwarf but she wasn't surprised to hear that the doppelganger was dealing with people that had their face on wanted posters.

"Thank you for the information, and the notes of cautions," she said, flicking another gold coin at the barkeep. "For the information". She leans in to quietly add, "and if you come across any information about those two that you might learn while we're in town, I'll be generous again."

With that she put a reassuring hand on Bern's back and said, "Let's join our friends at their table and share what we've learned, eh?"

He did his best to ignore the 'conversation'. It seemed more productive than getting 'into it' with the bartender.

He accepted Zindra's 'suggestion' of joining the others with a nod and a smile. "And another drink or two". he said with a wink.

Her soft smile remains guessing where this is going and taking out a copper coin, she hands it over to the boy. "What is your name, boy?" She asks.

"Rory," the boy replies to Zhu, taking the copper carefully and holding it up in front of him. At the sight of an audience for his planned 'show' he's pretty much tuned out the rest of the party and their talk of a double gainer or whatever that word is he doesn't know. Nope. He's going to show off a skill he's learned by hanging around tables in this inn long enough to get expert training from all walks of society.

"Now you see it..." he narrates, waving his hands around each other and the copper coin.

Rory Dex (Sleight of Hand)
AquaDyne rolled 1d20+0 and got 7

"And now you don't!"

The coin is gone, although just about anyone paying attention would see the intended subterfuge, which would have worked for someone with more skill or practice.

But with a grin, Rory doesn't seem to care whether the trick worked or not, as he turns tail and sprints away from the table into the nearest crowd of moving patrons.

But he doesn't get very far. The boy's glee turns to panic as the other barmaid that was serving other tables manages to snatch him -- by the ear -- and brings him back to the table. Apparently he spends his days in the tavern while his mum works... and she keeps a sharper eye on him than he realizes.

"Apologize, Rory," she tells him sternly.

The boy, of course, produces the coin and hands it to Zhu. "Sorry," he says, the words giving his ears freedom again.

"That boy'll be the death of me," she says with an apologetic smile to Zhu, and the rest of the party. "Always wanting adventure and there's no shortage of stories from folk passing through. He stowed away with a party once, they were an hour down the road before they found him... best check your wagons when you leave."

She ruffles his hair and leaves him there by the table that he recently stole from, letting him face the consequences as she returns to other patrons.

Although she doesn't expect to ever see it again, she grins and pulls out a silver.

"Will it work as well with this? And you haven't yet said who you are here with."

She has sympathy if he needs to earn a coin. She's been there.

The half-elf smiles at Jaliera's actions and question. His eyes draw to the faraway past where he once survived on the streets with her. He watches, and though he is tempted to offer enhancement to her, he knows he will perform later. The boy can see some of the entertainment then.

The boy looks down, scuffing his feet, admonished. And yet, the table seems to have forgiven him as Jaliera produces another coin. A silver one! "That's my mum," he gestures toward the barmaid that recently had him by the ear, as he reaches out to take the coin, but leaves it visible for now. "I visit tables while she works and listen to all the stories, it's how I heard about all the stuff you all did."

Tavern day care at its finest.

Rory ventures a small smile, looking at Jaliera. "I can... do the trick again?" he confirms, not wanting to get in trouble a second time. His ear still hurts.

"Yes please Rory. We are eager to see it again."

She smiles at the boy, reassured by his identity and happy to provide him with the coin and some tales to tell his friends.

"As to adventuring there are a lot of times of being hungry, cold, bored and sometimes hurt. Not all it is cracked up to be. And besides you have to be.."

She stands, holding a hand above her head.

"..at least this high to qualify. Got some growing to do first."

Rory smiles and attempts to repeat the trick. "Okay!" he says excitedly. "Now you see it...."

But it's even more obvious than the last time. He doesn't even bother with the "Now you don't" part. At least he didn't drop the coin on the floor.... that happened once.

He places the coin back on the table, knowing he didn't provide the entertainment as requested. "Sorry, I guess I need to practice more," he shrugs. "Or learn real magic," he adds, his eyes brightening and looking around at the group.

"So have you seen giants other than the ones you ran off at Triboar? Lots of people coming through have said there are giants all over the place. We haven't seen any come to our town yet, but I wanna see one!"

The scholar looked on approvingly as the boy left the coin on the table: The child had been corrected, the correction had stuck. No easy feat in such a rambunctious environment, a credit to his mother for instilling that baseline of discipline.

"We have, yes. Great and small, wise and simple. There is a risk with seeing them, I went toe to toe with both the fire giants at Triboar and it could have cost me dearly, and that's with the benefit of years of training for battle and extensive study of the art. If you would see a hostile giant, you had best have studied and been diligent in your learning beforehand, whichever path you seek."

She smiles at the boy and reaches out to push the coin back towards him.

"Keep it, put it towards your dreams whatever they are."

She grins.

"And giants have the advantage of being sooo big that you can see them at a distance safely, so no-one gets hurt."

She is thinking about her path to this moment in time. It is strange to be considered a hero. She doesn't feel like one.. or what she imagines one might feel like. And it is surprising that they seem to have acquired a budding reputation. That has an upside.. and a downside. Either way it is something they have to deal with.

Watches the boy out of the corner of his eye but is more intent on observing the group. Chuckling at the kid and his 'magic' tricks.

"Did you guys figure out why they attacked Triboar? Because I heard on my way up here that it wasn't the only attack. Two other towns were attacked by giants as well. One of the places inn an area called Ten towns up near the spine and Goldencrest... Goldenfields something like that." Pavel asks after Jaliera hands over the coin to the boy.

Pavel looks around at the table to see if there is any reaction to this news. He knew they'd been on the road and wasn't certain they realized the scope of the giant problem.

He watched the youngster 'perform' ... sort of. He =could= be just what he appeared to be, but he could also been sent as a distraction. So he was still keeping an eye on the comings and goings.

"Hey there. I'm Zindra and this is Bern," she says to Pavel, who she doesn't know. Her face is flushed with anger. "There were other giant attacks? Please tell us more about what you've heard. What kind of giants? I have friends in Goldenfelds. It is a peaceful place."

"Nice to meet you." Pavel said taking a small drink from his mug. "So Goldenfields. Heard about those attacks in Triboar. Supposedly one town was attacked by frost giants and the other by hill giants. I think the hill giants attacked Goldenfields. Would make more sense."

"Supposedly both those attacks were similar to Triboar because the giants were looking for something.

Rory nods with a wide grin as Jaliera allows him to keep the coin, slipping it quietly into his pocket, but remaining at the table, leaning forward on his elbows in a space between seats, listening to all the news.

About this time, a burly human enters the door to the common room. His arms are covered in blood.

"Theo!" shouts one of the barmaids, Rory's mother. "'Ow many times we gotta tell ya, wash up first!"

Theo wipes his bloody arms on his apron. "I did!" he claims with a silly grin, but a stern glare and hand gesture indicating "turn around and go" from the barmaid send him back outside.

His focus goes from scanning to focused when the man comes in looking 'the worse for the ware'.

Apparently this place didn't appreciate patrons who had a bad day, he thought.

When he was 'chased' out by the waitress, he was a bit surprised. But it wasn't the first time he has seen a man 'dominated' by a woman. Still ... he remained 'on alert'. Something had caused his wounds.

She winks at the boy and then remembers her manners, turning to Zindra and Bern.

"This is Pavel, Zindra, Bern" she points them out. "We met briefly in Phandalin."

She looks up as the man with the bloody arms enters before being sent outside. From the reaction she guesses he must be a butcher or hunter of some sort.

"Hail and well met Pavel," she adds as she lifts her mug of ale and takes a decent gulp.

In a moment when the conversation stalls after she's downed her brew, almost as an aside, she asks, "Hey, does the name Weevil or Forkbeard mean anything to you? It might be the name of a dwarf."

"I heard he has been working with the doppleganger.. but there is a more serious issue here."

She looks at Bern and then around at the others, lowering her voice but clearly comfortable to include Pavel.

"I have heard that he is planning to take Bern's place. Not sure what that means for Bern but we need to watch and protect our friend."

She feels this is best out in the open so eveyone is aware, ideally before it happens, so the earlier the better.

OOC: DM please see PM

This was something Pavel knew. He remembered and recently discussed. The name Weevil does spark a memory.. I heard of the dwarf. He keeps low company with a doppleganger. Trying to remember that name it began with a V. Vhalan... Valal.. Valkan. Wait that is the strange guy in Triboar. Ah that name will come to me in a bit. You think this doppleganger is the one that was seen at this bar. The one impersonating Bern over there??"

She's been listening, having smiled at the human child's attempt at sleight of hand. At the current conversation, a memory returns to her and she turns to Bern. "That is a good point. We need to have a way to know whether it is truly you or the fake. As I recall, a Doppelganger can only access those memories you had when it took your likeness on so we should setup a code word", she glances around, "privately, that we can ask you to verify your identity if it is ever in question."

He stopped scanning for a moment as he considered Zhu's 'idea'. "It makes sense", he said. "But one ... 'adjustment' ... to the plan. Since he has my memories, it might be a better idea if someone =else= picks the word", he suggested.

The human child Zhu observed remains at the table, leaning on his elbows and listening to the heroes converse about a dot pelgang or something. Whatever that is he doesn't know but code words are fun!

While Zhu was mentioning the code word and Bern responded, the name came to him. He blurts out, "Vhalak. That was his name.. well the doppelganger's name. Vhalak. Anyone here ever hear of him or it?"

Noticing that the group was talking and lost in their thoughts, he decided to intercede. And hoped he wouldn't get killed.

"I suggest you come up with a code word soon while Bern is still Bern. Also take other precautions such as not leaving the man alone. Ever. Especially going forward."

"I have a strong belief that the switch has not happened yet. Bern's unconcious reactions to this discussion point strongly towards that. Going forward you need to give Vhalak the doppelganger little opportunity to make the switch."

Rory hears the group get quiet noting his presence. "Okay, okay, I'll leave," he says, getting the hint. "But you're not the only table I've listened to and I know stuff."

With that tease, he heads away to find another table to spy on.

"Plenty more silver pieces for good information Rory."

She quickly adds as he turns to leave, and he knows she is good for that.

"Would the same one work for all of us? And good idea Pavel, I was thinking the same thing."

It might be quite a task remembering lots.

"And Pavel, what are your forward plans?"

Might as well find out if he could be a good addition though probably he has his own agenda.

Pavel had largely ignored the boy. His mind concentrating on other things and other thoughts. But he watched the kid leave. When Rory was gone. "I think one word that your group agrees upon would suffice. Something all of you could easily remember and be able to slip into a sentence."

Sitting back he relaxed some and took another drink.

"Going forward? Well Halia wanted me to learn more about the people undercutting the profits from the mine and selling weapons not to mention the whole thing with the giants. Not a good deal especially with the mine just being reopened and all. Plus she was concerned for all of you with the VHalak running around. She wanted me to get that information to you if I could. Saw an opportunity when I stopped in Yartar a few days ago to possibly catch the lot of you here in Calling Horns and get that information to you. Calling Horns being the last area that Weevil and Vhalak were seen and all. Still trying to figure out how I got ahead of you. Guess traveling by boat is faster."

There's a time for talking and a time for listening, and entering a strange inn in a strange settlement... in a strange part of the world... that's a time for listening.

So Arus listens the diffuse hubbub, showing affable indifference mostly but sometimes very keen interest.

Raising an eyebrow, he says to Bern, "I doubt thy doppelganger can conjure a goodberry, my friend. So if suspicion arises that might be our foolproof."

The Dragonborn chipped in. "From what we've learned, Doppelgangers can read surface thoughts, but they can't mimic the Art. A word wouldn't help, casting a simple but unreplicable bit of the art would."

As the evening sun dips below the horizon, the tavern undergoes a gradual transformation. The fading light outside prompts the barmaids to embark on their nightly ritual of lighting oil lamps, casting a warm and welcoming glow across the room.

Amidst this change in ambience, the two children from the stables, Finn and Lily, step into the tavern from the hallway that leads to the stables. Finn moves over to stand near the door, his posture suggesting a hint of impatience, his arms crossed expectantly. Meanwhile, Lily, with a spark of excitement in her eyes, approaches the party's table. Her voice carries a touch of enthusiasm as she addresses Davroar, "You have permission to try to heal the limp horse!"

With the message delivered, she heads over to a barmaid, who the party can now see bears a striking resemblance to her, seemingly both her and Rory's mother. The silver coin, a gift from Bern, glistens as Lily presents it, pointing at him as if explaining the source of the generous offering. Nearby, Rory leaves his lurking spot at another table to exhibit his own silver, prompting a somewhat skeptical look from the barmaid. Still, as no one seems to be in pursuit of the young trickster, she accepts the version of events he's presenting. After Lily gestures toward Finn and the door, a nod of approval is granted, and the trio of children heads out into the evening, likely to spend their pair of coins on evening offerings at the market.

Just before the door swings closed, the aproned man who previously had arms stained with blood returns, his face adorned with a mischievous grin. He meets the redhead barmaid at a table, where a flagon of ale awaits, hinting at a familiar routine that plays out here.

Less than a minute later, the pair of guards that the party encountered upon entering the town strolls in, evidently relieved from their watch duties.

Seeing the two guards he offers them a tipped hand and a smile. To the table, he says "I have promised to entertain this evening with a song and a tale. I think I will investigate when a good time would be to perform."

Unless anyone at the table suggests otherwise he moves over to the innkeeper and presents himself.

"I am Sindar a bard of some skill. I have promised the two town guards who met us at the gate a tale and a song. Since it is your establishment, I thought I would ask when might be the best time and location for such entertainment?"

The Dragonborn rose to his full height, and nodded to Jaliera and Davroar.

"Might as well cover both needs for our common good, the more eyes the better. As for my idea, it hinges on each of us demonstrating something we can do that can't be replicated by a doppelganger."

With a moment's thought, the Glassstaff was held casually in Kriv's grip, and he leaned it securely against the table, releasing his hold.

"Easier for those of us with some measure of the Art, but that's most of us, and we should be able to think of something for each of us."

With a friendly smile, the innkeeper addresses Sindar, "Ah, but you see, my friend, this establishment does not belong to me. It's in the capable hands of Tamalin Zoar. I suspect, considering your request, you'd like to have a word with her..."

He pauses, and then adds, "However, regarding your proposal, I'd recommend waiting until the market's close, which is in less than an hour. At that point, you'll discover this room brimming with patrons, all eager for some lively entertainment."

"So you are talking of magic? Are we sure the Dopleganger can't do that? I though he inherited skills and memories of whoever he took over at the time. And if he takes over anyone else, would Bern's legacy remain with him?"

She is seriously trying to get her head around this.

Sat listening to them and saw the group was talking about a subject that he the newcomer might not want known to outsiders and eavesdroppers.

"Look, I just met the lot of you. I knew of you in passing at Phandalin for the most part. My main reason for being here is because I work for Halia and someone, namely Weevil, and his cronies which includes Bern's doppleganger. Before I go and you lot figure out how to make sure that none of you are dopplegangers I'll let you know why I am mostly certain of Bern being Bern. I have a little talent in magic and I sifted his brain when we were talking. His surface reactions to this probe were consistent with his outward reactions and lead me to believe Bern is still Bern. Now I don't know much about dopplegangers. Like if they possess the abilities of the people the copy. Maybe what you should be asking is who in town would most likely know and be able to help you figure out a way to make sure that any of you are victims."

"Me I'm goign to get on with my business and shakedown the innkeeper for more information on Weevil because for me he is possibly the key to make my boss happy."

He remained silent and thoughtful, considering what might have the best chance of success. Unfortunately he couldn't think of anything that seemed like it might have a chance of helping.

The bartender informs Sindar where Tamalin Zoar can be found in one of the curtained-off sections at the southern end of the room.

He moved in that direction. In his experience, curtains like that are usually meant for privacy. Yet he had to make introductions so that he could do what he said he would do.

Davroar

He stops for the moment to listens to Pavel and considers his words. While Davroar is not overly religious, a cleric can usually see into a persons soul so he says, "Let's find a cleric to divine that all of us are who we claim to be. Not sure how much gold he'd want, but it would ease all of our minds. Then right after that we can secretly come up with a way to check each of us in the future, whether it be a code word or ability."

Davroar knows of tribes that carve their family histories into wooden totems. Perhaps a simple act of each of them carving their own symbol upon a piece of wood might be a way to confirm their true identities in the future. For now Davroar will keep this idea to himself and will suggest it later. Carving, at least to him, is usually more than just a single thought, but is a process of emotions. If a doppleganger is capable of such duplication then Davroar feels they will need something magical to truly be safe from it.

Standing up he looks to Jaliera, Bern and Kriv, and says, "If all of you wish to come to watch me heal a horse then you are welcome. Who's going to keep our table?"

At the south end of the room, a hallway is visible between two walls, with curtains hanging over what appear to be windowed openings on either side. There are doorways on either side of the hallway, leading inside these areas, one of which is noisy with the sounds of celebration and/or gambling and/or both. Another curtained doorway is at the end of the hallway but it is quiet beyond.

Such privacy is guarded by more than curtains, of course. A burly well-armed gentleman seems to be in the way of further progress, although his crossed arms seem more of a threat than his short sword and daggers.

"Rooms past here are private," he informs Sindar with a polite smile.

Sindar

"I was directed here to find the proprietor. I am a bard of some skill and wish to entertain the good folks who will be here this evening. I offered a song or two to the guards that let my friends and I in through the gate as a way of passage. I intend to keep that promise.

"I understand that the bulk of the people will begin to arrive over the next hour or two, and I wanted to see what was thought of my offer."

If he was bothered by the large muscular arms, Sindar didn't show it. He kept a smile on his face. He also knew how to handle himself and wasn't concerned.

Pavel approaches the bar and orders another drink. When the bartender returns he places his payment on the table along with a silver coin that he places his finger on.

"So what do you know about a dwarf called Weevil? Any idea where I might find him?"

"After Pavel walks away she turns to the others, specifically replying to Jaliera, but unconcerned if anyone, including Bern listens in. "I'm with that Pavel guy there. This is Bern. That doppelganger hasn't been near Bern for a long time now. Truth is, it could be any of you. It's just choosing Bern for some reason. Maybe it thinks Bern is pretty."

She smirks as she looks Bern up and down. "Wouldn't be a bad choice if it wanted to look pretty."

No longer smiling she adds, "I don't think a cleric, specifically can help us. They know about demons and devils and those creepy dead-not-dead things. We would need someone that knows about monsters. That could be a wizard or a sage of some sort. It's probably a good idea to do something to all of us, like a tattoo somewhere that we cover up, to make sure that we're all who we think we are. If the doppelganger didn't see something on Bern, it wouldn't know to emulate it. And if it read it's mind two months ago, it wouldn't know what he knows now. It seems simple to me. We come up with some catch phrase with a secret response. It could be something like, 'Can you give me two gold pieces?' to which Bern would respond, 'I gave you three yesterday'. Look. It's not perfect, but I'm getting tired of having to dish out gold to repair Bern's reputation!"

“It can read minds, and that would include code phrases. That would include the expected responses we’re waiting to hear. Hence, we need capability based solutions, not information based solutions. Things it cannot emulate, not things it can dig out of minds.” Clarified the wizard or sage of some sort.

She shakes her head. "I believe it would be able to copy those as well. If it could only copy the parts of a body that it could see, then it would be as simple as examining body hair or any other hidden body part that is under clothing."

Davroar

Listening to every ones opinion, Davroar considers Zindra's suggestion since none of them know what a doppelganger can do exactly. "Guess Zindra's right, we need to find someone that knows for sure what it is capable of, and then we find a way to trick it. Maybe that witch outside the walls can help?"

The burly guard in the south hallway smiles at Sindar. "We love entertainment, and the proprietor might care more depending on whether you'll be telling true tales or fanciful ones," he offers. "I'm guessing since you mentioned my friends at the gate that it's the former? If so, I expect she'll want to talk about more than entertainment with you and your party." He uncrosses his arms enough to vaguely gesture in the direction of the party, clearly aware of the group.

...

The bartender chuckles at Pavel and his offered silver. "Your companion paid me a gold for information on Weevil," he says, his head tilting in the direction of Zindra. "Along with some guy who looks like your other companion." He gestures with a rag-holding hand toward Bern. "As far as where they've gone, I don't have much information on that," he replies, leaving the silver untouched. "Barmaids are more likely to have overheard any table talk about their plans."

He certainly doesn't look evasive, mostly giving off an apathetic vibe about the comings and goings of the ale-drinkers.

"Or ask some of Tamalin's deputies. They probably know a lot more, and they'll be clear about their prices too."

"Every good tale is a mix of what happened with an appropriate level of embellishment," he stated with a smile.

"I will await her appearance, and if she doesn't show, I will consider that my talents are not wanted." He shrugged and turned heading back towards his companions.

The bartender gives both a shrug and a nod to Pavel. "Not quite that simple, but basically... Tamalin is the law. She has nine deputies that report directly to her... that dwarf over there," he gestures toward a shield dwarf sitting alone at a table against the wall, observing the room quietly, "is one of them. They of course sometimes hire others for the more boring things like standing guard."

"Anyway," he continues, "you'll notice there are all sorts in here and nobody's killing each other. We don't take sides in this town. We provide safety. Everyone plays by the rules and everyone's welcome. You wanna have a fight? Take it outside the walls or possibly get banished there," he chuckles. "You wanna catch the Weevil to claim the reward? Don't expect to do so here."

"But as I said, if you want to tip for information, the two barmaids are more likely to share bits and pieces they've picked up. You want accurate information, talk to one of the deputies and negotiate a price, depending on how much you value it."

....

In the south part of the room, Sindar and the burly guard hear a woman's voice from the southwest corner. "Send him in!"

The guard steps to the side and unfolds his arms, gesturing at the curtain. "Your lucky day, Bard."

He continues to smile at the guard. It might seem as if that is the only expression the red-headed half-elf can offer.

With a half dip, he saunters past the guard towards the woman's voice. His pointy ears informing him as to which curtain to turn towards if it isn't open by the time he gets to it.

[Linked Image from i.ibb.co]As Sindar enters the room, he notes a warm and welcoming, almost cozy atmosphere. The flickering light from a nearby fireplace casts a warm glow over the curtained room, and the low murmur of conversations beyond the curtains fills the air. At one of the round tables, he spots a somewhat elderly woman who exudes an air of authority and kindness. She's just set aside a book and, upon noticing Sindar, flashes him a warm smile. Gesturing to an empty chair beside her, she extends an invitation, "Do join me."

A pair of armed men engrossed in a card game nearby hardly pay Sindar any attention, their focus clearly on the game. Or maybe it's just an act. But they seem to not be part of the introduction.

"Tamalin Zoar," the woman introduces herself with a warm and friendly tone, her eyes reflecting the wisdom of her years. "I purchased this inn some years ago and have built this town around it. I hope you are enjoying yourselves. I had heard of your party shortly after you arrived," she notes, demonstrating her keen awareness of the village's ongoings. "Not many are headed eastward Evermoor Way. I am curious what your plans are. If no one has told you yet, I often provide free room and board to parties such as yours in exchange for helping me solve various small problems in and near the town, although I've heard you are generous with your coin so perhaps you would prefer to rest instead."

The red-headed half-elf nods in appreciation of the offer and steps inside to take the proffered seat.

"I am Sindar, a bard of some skill. My friends and I are traveling eastward, and though I can't speak for them completely, I would be willing to take your offer to them. They might be interested. I know that we are interested in what has been happening of late. As you undoubtedly have heard, we were in Triboar when the giants invaded.

"When my companions and I entered your town, the two guards made a bit of a," he pauses thinking about what might be the best word to describe the requiring of payment, "discussion. I offered to entertain them and others of the town with a song or two and tales. Since this is your establishment, I sought you out to discuss this and see if you would like me to do so?"

Tamalin nods. "Word travels fast in this town," she smiles, with a quiet chuckle. "Particularly about travelers we don't often see. I am rather certain that many would love to hear of your exploits. Perhaps in half an hour, to give time to spread the word? Gil?"

One of the guards at the table turns as his name is called. "Won't take that long," he says dryly.

"We need time to break out another keg," Tamalin smiles. "First round for everyone will be on the house."

Gil smiles and ducks out of the room to start spreading the word.

"You have my blessing and an expectant audience. I trust you'll not disappoint," she tells Sindar.

Brom and Elyra are still in the stables tending to various chores when Davroar and Jaliera arrive, with Kriv and Bern following closely behind. The pair of children who were here earlier are absent.

"This one here," Brom gestures toward a stall. "Her name is Tyra, if that's useful to your magic."

As the introduction is complete, a man of about thirty follows the group in, quietly observing. He doesn't give any introduction, nor does Brom call him out, indicating a possibility he is the horse's owner who just wants to watch.

It is always good to watch Davroar work with animals. Often when he is at his best. She looks around the stables as she didn't come in earlier and takes the opportunity to stroke the nose of her new horse.

"I have named you 'Meadow', I hope you like it?"

She is impressed by the orderliness here. But her primary purpose is to watch the backs of her friends so she positions herself where she can see everyone. She discounts no-one, not even children, as dopplegangers could be anyone.

There are no obvious threats in the stables at this time, and the party's horses look well cared for. This seems a well-run business, and it's likely that anyone who didn't meet standards would likely not last long in this town.

He will slowly approach the lame horse and calms her down since he is a stranger. Examining the horse thoroughly, Davroar whispers to the horse, "Easy now Tyra, I'll just reposition your leg." Once it is set and feels it is aligned properly Davorar cast cure wounds and hopes that will it properly heal.

Giving Tyra the horse a moment to settle down, Davroar says, "I hope this helps. Brom if you or the owner would perhaps take Tyra for a walk around the yard and see if she is responding better now?"

Tyra was restless as the druid approached, shifting and fidgeting as it tried to make sense of the pain it had felt for some time. But Davroar's words seem to instantly soothe her, as she lowers her head to look directly at his eyes, snorting softly.

Calmed, the mare remains still while Davroar does his work on the injured leg, turning her head to look at him as she feels the magical touch, the dull ache transforming into a tingling sensation and then.... nothing. No pain.

She watches as Davroar departs her stall, snorting and whinning, attempting to nuzzle him as he passes by. She's once again restless, but it seems less of a nervous jumping and more excitement.... yes, she wants to go out!

"I'll let the owner know immediately," Brom replies, impressed. "And thank you for your care. I assure you your party's mounts will receive a lot of extra attention as soon as my assistants return," he grins.

She heads to the bar with Bern but keeps an eye on the man that Jaliera was talking to. She was being cautious, having missed the whole long introduction thing.

"Line them up!" she calls out to the bartender that happens to be talking to that man at the time.

She turns back to Bern, "That guy. He's sniffing around the same things we are. Knows about the giants. He knows your friend Luminmorn from back in Phandelin. He has lots of information. He's also friends with Jaliera so should probably get to know him better?"

"That sounds good, but given the ... 'issues' ... with my 'twin', maybe it would be better if you talked with him without me."

The new arrivals help share the load serving all the newcomers, and after several minutes they seem to have a handle on things. The bartender passes Pavel's coin on to Rory's mother, gesturing towards him. She smiles and joins him at the bar, leaning against it. "You got questions, I got answers," she smiles.

He looks over and realizes that it is the mother of the kid that came to the table earlier.

"I'm just looking for any information on the dwarf known as Weevil and his friend that looks like my friend over there. Like if you overheard where they are going. Trying to find them and work out some business with them."

The barmaid/mother smiles. Knowing she's able to answer, she slips the coin into her bodice.

"Best I can figure, the dwarf arrived here from Everlund to meet up with the gentleman that looks a lot like your companion there," she replies, with a head nod in Bern's direction. "That fellow came in from the same way you did. The dwarf has a source of weapons, and if I were to place a wager I'd guess they're in Everlund right now, but..."

She pauses, turning to lean her back against the bar, arching it in somewhat of a stretch. She did just come off a shift and it looks like she's just trying to get comfortable while she talks.

"The two were talking about selling those weapons, splitting up their territory but sharing leads and sharing profits. Standard kinda trade talk I hear every day, but this one's different for two reasons. First is who they're selling to. I specifically heard 'em talking about the giants everyone's seeing these days. I don't know what kind of weapons he has that giants would make use of, but that's just what I heard with my own ears."

She turns back to more directly face Pavel, voice lowering slightly as she leans in. "Second thing that's different, and take this with a grain of salt, or maybe a whole salt shaker, 'cause the source is my boy." She gestures toward Rory, seated in front of the makeshift stage, sharing a smile and wave with him. "He told me he overheard them talking about selling magical weapons to hill giants. Claims the town blacksmith can enchant them, but everyone in this town knows the only magic around here is outside the walls. So maybe he's lying, or maybe Rory misheard. Just passing it on.... warts and all."

There's a last pause as she watches Pavel's reaction and then concludes. "Anyway, the pair of 'em split up. Dwarf went north, into the Evermoors, the man went south into the high forest. I'm guessing they'll eventually meet up in Everlund, but no telling when. If you're after the dwarf for the reward, you probably want to head north."

This was a lot to take in. So the doppelganger and dwarf split up again. One went to the Evermoors whatever that is. The other to the High Forest.

They are selling weapons to the giants. Supposedly magical weapons. So next person to talk to would be the blacksmith. No... that group from Phandalin. They needed the info on the doppelganger.

Maybe one of them would know more about the region. Like just what was the Evermoors. Sounded like a swamp.

Looking back at the waitress he fished out another coin. This time a gold piece. "Thank you for your time. And use some of it to get your son something special. Even is he might have misheard."

Pavel looked back over to the group and took a long drink before starting to head back to them.

The extra coin is accepted gratefully with a smile. "You and your companions have been quite generous with both my children and I assure you they'll get something special from this," she replies as Pavel heads off to rejoin the group.
