The travel plan decided on, the group agrees on a set time to depart in the morning at first light, makes final arrangements for supplies to bring along, and everyone heads off to their respective rooms for a good night's rest in a comfortable bed.

The first day's travel awaits.

With the plan set, he went out to get a few supplies. Unfortunately some of the shops were already closed for the night, so he wouldn't be able to 'sleep in'.

He went up to the room, got into bed and went to sleep. He would finish up the 'shopping' in the morning.

Arus

The triton's last breakfast at the Pearl-handled Pipe was savoury oatmeal topped with a hard-boiled egg. With a satisfied smile, he tipped the receptionist as he checked out and paid for the expenses on his room.

And so fuelled, Arus is soon outdoors with his steed saddled and saddlebags loaded up.

The cold Marponeth morning mists the breath and hints at Winter's approach. Most tritons live in the deep sea at a temperature little above freezing so Arus is comfy.

He oversees the loading of the wagon since it carries some Lionshield merchandise bound for Noanar's Hold, then returns to his horse, making sure to bid everyone in the party good morning, one at a time.

Arus's horse is dark bay, a clean-limbed creature with eerily sea blue eyes, neither the fastest or heaviest of warhorses but an exemplary all-rounder and remarkably intelligent for a horse.

He speaks to it in Aquan as the party assembles, agreeing that it will be good to be back on the road but the luxury accommodation will be missed.

"Hark," he says to all when all are present, "tis time we bid farewell to Yartar. Mount up."

Arus mounts up, saying more ironically, "Whatever new dangers await us on the road, least they shan't involve a sewer. Tis a four day ride to the next settlement."

She went with the others to fetch her horse and took her place near the front of the group, as she was their guide.

"This road is less traveled and now almost all who travel the road do so in large numbers because the monsters that prey on travelers tend to avoid larger groups," she started. "Our first stop is Calling Horns, which is just a small village with an inn."

Jaliera

"Not sure I ever want to see a sewer again" she says with feeling. And she is not sad to be saying goodbye to Yartar either. She likes being on the road with her friends. Everyday brings a new experience. There is a freedom to this life.

She mentally sends Whisper aloft to see if there are any signs of trouble on their route out.

He didn't really have anything to add to the discussions, so set about getting his horse packed and ready in silence.

Packing her belongings and saddlebags onto her horse, and dressed in her riding gear and hooded cloak, she mounts gracefully and waits for the group to move out.

Davroar

Like Bern, he would have been up late and then up early to be getting last minute items with new cold-weather clothes, hide armour, two pairs of boots, wool socks, gloves, and a new fur-lined cloak. Running late he is probably the last to arrive, out of breath, and trying to stuff some dried fruit bread into his small pack. If there is any other food vendors along their way out of the city he will probably stop at each to buy what he can that he would unlikely find by hunting.

When the party has saddled up, they start making their way out of town in the order they'd discussed, with Zindra and Bern leading the way, Kriv and Sindar following, Davroar and Jaliera next, and with Arus and Zhu bringing up the rear.

It takes a bit longer to actually leave the town as they pass a few shops and tents selling wares some of them might want to supplement their stores with, as merchants along the closer to the edge of the town cater to travelers (and enjoy a slight premium on the price for their convenience).

As the sun slowly rises ahead of them, the day warms a bit.

Whisper flies ahead and there doesn't seem to be anyone on the road ahead of them... for now.

Plenty of time for conversation or, for the bard in the party... possibly a song?

That's a month ago. I want to carry his character for a bit, but I'm also worried, because he was not well at the time. Let's assume that the bard sings his song.

[Has anyone been in touch with Pandemonium recently? I haven't, and well-remembered Nep, he was still poorly last he posted. Worrying! Hope he's OK.

Also, iirc Davroar and Jaliera drive the wagon, is that right?]

Arus

The brown wastes to the north are shrouded in early morning mist as the party takes the Evermoor Way east.

To the south are highlands that could hide a host of foes but it's only after Calling Horns that they'll skirt the water-logged bogs of Evermoor itself.

At least if they're attacked by any more giants they should have plenty of warning. They'd look pretty silly trying to hide in the short grass.

A thought suddenly occurs to Arus as he's riding along at a smooth rack.

"This is the farthest inland I have ever been." he said, "Have any of you come this far east before?"

<Bern>

He studied the area as they traveled. It was new to him.

He looks over at Arus as he commented. "New to me too", he said with a grin.

Davroar

Happy to be back outside of the town, he will be doing a brisk walk enjoying the views too. This area is all new to since Davroar traveled part ways west from Narfell via the coast line of the Sea of the Fallen Stars. To answer Arus he simply says to him,
"I'm from Narfell. It's about as east as one can get in Faerûn."

[Iirc we had one for that Roll20 combat vs the ogres and giants. So I'm assuming we still have it but I could be wrong. wink

If driving a wagon uses a skill, it's probably Animal Handling. Davroar has a +7!! And Jaliera has a +2. So they're a decent crew.]

(iirc it wasn't our cart. We were just escorting supplies to Triboar and we turned it over at the caravanserai. Then we acted as guards for a caravan of wagons, again not our wagons, travelling to Yartar. As far as I know we are now footloose and fancy free, unencumbered by wagons or carts..... wink )

OOC: I emailed Pandemonium. Good news is he's doing well now.

He's had COVID 5 times and the last time he couldn't shake it. Then a shingles booster that landed poorly. And then overwhelmed at work. There was also this statement "I just haven't found the will to want to post" which he followed up by saying he would try to post. So hopefully....

As for the cart and horses, the party was escorting a merchant caravan - hence all that. While you've never bought any horses, it's fair to say that you are rich and buying one is chump change so why not just make it so?

[Dang, Pandemonium's Covid passport must have all the stamps!! I'm very very glad he's recovering.

As for horses, Arus has Find Steed spell which takes care of him.

I guess we can have a wagon if we want one. Do we want one? Could be used as a camper, I guess.]

(Reposting as it appears to be lost in the OOC convo about carts.)

While a cart may have been useful on the stone roads to the west of Yartar, the road quickly gives way to gravel as the adventurers continue eastward, indicating that a cart or wagon might not be ideal along this stretch.

Although that decision is not universal. With the wide open countryside, Whisper can see well ahead and it's only about an hour into their journey that a fully loaded horse-drawn cart can be observed coming from the opposite direction.

There's plenty of time before the travelers meet for the party to discuss what, if anything, to do about the wagon, or the supplies thereon, or the driver thereof.

"I see no need to hide. We are not up to banditry and this is a single laden cart, certainly a trader of some sort and little threat. Whoever it is, they can't run, and so must expect to meet others on the road. Lets just approach without an aggression."

"While dangers on this road have increased, merchants still need to ply their trade. Hopefully they are good folk."

She pulled her horse even with Bern. "You make a good point but maybe if that happens it's a good thing if they spread word that we're headed in this direction? If that doppleganger that looks like you wanted to track us, good, right? And I haven't seen this group run away from anything. If they're headed for Yartar, we're going in the other direction. If someone there wanted to give chase, they would need to catch up. I can't imagine that they pose any real danger to us."

Arus

His horses laps up the miles with no fuss, and Arus is happy to let his companions take the lead. He was rearguard for a reason, after all.

He held his trident with the tines up and the butt cradled between his stirrups and shin. Comfy enough but at the ready and not as overtly hostile as drawing one's sword.

"Zindra and Bern, ride ahead with Kriv if you please. We won't be far behind you." he suggests.

Kriv has a certain, draconian charisma and Zindra and Bern are the party's scouts because of their keen senses.

Although sending Sindar might seem like a wise idea, it's still early and Arus doesn't want to tarry with the merchant any longer than a couple of minutes. A bard might take... longer than that.

The group of 3 trots ahead of the rest of the group, perhaps to seem less threatening.

As the distance closes between the party and the merchant, he draws his horse to a halt. Although he is armed with a sword on his left hip, it remains sheathed as he transfers the reins into his left hand, and raises an empty right hand, palm forward in greeting to the trio. "Morning!" he offers cheerfully.

The cart behind him appears to be carrying a range of furs and hides, with some rolls of linen among the mix as well.

She nodded at Arus, winked at Bern before moving forward towards the cart. As she neared, she called out "Well met!" with a cheery smile to the merchant. Her hand stayed away from her sheathed sword and her bow remained slung over her shoulder.

Her eyes kept a constant look out for danger.

Although the gesture is more of a token given the ability to summon his weapons with a thought, the Dragonborn noble reciprocates the symbolic indication of peaceful intent.

"Hail and well met, I hight Kriv Norixius of Norixius Keep. The way is clear to Yartar behind us, anything of note on the road ahead?"

"Aelan," the merchant replies, hand returning to his lap. "Good to know the road is clear, as I'm running low on gold for paying for protection," he adds with a grin.

Whether it's true or whether he's pretending not to have gold to mitigate any threat is unknown.

"It's been pretty quiet behind me all day... dismissed my last escort a few hours ago. Lots of activity going on the further you get from towns, though, between wild animals and those who hunt them."

His eyes scan the trio nearby and the others lurking further behind. "You'll probably be fine with a party your size, though. At least this side of Calling Horns. How far ya goin'?"

The scout listens patiently to the merchant as he tells of the road ahead. She studies him and wonders if he's being completely forthright.

Zindra Insight - is the merchant being completely truthful

The merchant =seemed= casual enough, but that didn't actually =mean= he was being honest. He looked for 'the little tells', but he wasn't sure if he could actually see them well enough at this distance to be sure.

The merchant doesn't give any obvious tells that he's lying, at least that Zindra or Bern can perceive.

Although he does give off the impression he's not exactly volunteering information either.

He had been in a somber mood all morning and remained mostly silent in his preparations on his roan bay riding horse. The animal's soft brown eyes seemed to know his rider was unhappy about leaving the lush accommodations of the Pearl Handed Pipe. This was by far the best place he had stayed in years. He enjoyed the good life, and his overflowing breakfast remind him of that with a few different sweet rolls and a couple of delectable pastries stuffed with savory treats.

Yet his heart skipped a beat here and there, he was excited about getting closer to his goal of reaching Evermore and the elves. He was chasing a dream to find his father, who probably didn't know he existed. The thought that his father knew about his half-breed son, and ignored him was too irksome to even consider.

Riding on the road his mood lightened, as did his pockets as he sampled his treats before they had a chance to spoil. There would be plenty of time to eat hunted game, or rations as required. He wanted to continue to live the high life as long as he was able.

He remained with the back group of his companions as they talked with the merchant. He didn't seem to want to elicit too much information from a travel, especially one who didn't seem to what to share very much. That alone told him he was in a sour mood. He decided then and there that he needed to change his attitude just as he had changed his stars when he was younger. The world was his oyster, and he would be the pearl at its center.

[OOC: Thank you for all the well wishing. Glad to be back! Glad to be free of my most recent arrangement of maladies. Looking forward to my next covid booster... um not! smile ]

"A fair bit further than Calling Horns, I'll tell you that for free," reciprocated the Dragonborn. "Anything you had in mind past there? The usual problems, or something new?"

"Oh, yeah, something new," Aelan agrees. "This side? The usual stuff. Past it? Trouble. Couple of groups...."

His words trail off as he glances in Bern's direction, brow furrowing.

"You got a twin brother?" he asks Bern directly, the previous sentence left unfinished.

Finding himself fidgeting within his new clothes and armour while hanging back, he stops still when the merchant mentions Bern's 'twin'. This doppleganger seems to precede trouble wherever they go, and Davroar waits to hear more.

"Twin?"

She glanced over to Bern with a bit of a grimace. She knew that Bern really didn't like this doppelgänger that has decided to take on his visage.

"Do you mind telling us where did you saw this 'Twin' and under what circumstance?" she asked the traveler.

He was lost in conflicting thoughts and emotions at the mention of his 'twin'. Thankfully Zindra was there to ask what needed to be asked while he worked to get his head clear.

"Do you mind telling me if you're supporting this... twin... or not?" the merchant replies carefully, avoiding the question. "I don't want any trouble, and if you're with him or there's family ties, that's fine with me. I'll be on my way... no worries."

He would not have 'announced' that particular fact ... especially to a stranger. But he had to admit that ... maybe ... he wasn't the best judge of what should be shared on this particular subject.

"No, not directly," Aelan replies, finally returning his attention to Zindra. He relaxes somewhat but still seems cautious.

"It's all rumors," he continues. "And since I make my living moving goods I get to hear a lot of 'em. So yeah, can't put the finger on it, but this guy who looks like you" ... a tilt of his head in Bern's direction ... "and a dwarf" ... a pause and nod toward Kriv ... "and their friends... are somewhat new to the area and things started to happen about when they arrived."

"Coincidence?" Aelan shrugs. "Maybe. All I know is it's no longer a good place for me to do my business. More danger, less product."

He pauses for a moment, then adds, "Uh, one of you asked about where... all the trouble is around the Evermoors. Mostly just on the other side of Calling Horns."

"Thank you my good man. It is much appreciated. What sort of problems were there? We intend to spend the night at Calling Horns. Is it safe there?"

He turns around and waves the others forward.

ooc: Much as I'm playing, I think it best if the rest of the group do the talking for the party.

He nudges his horse forward. He still stops a bit back watching the proceedings. To him, watching people was half the reason to meet someone new. How a person moved when they said something, how they said it, all offered clues to anything else that might be unsaid.

He will walk up to where the three of them are talking to the trader and will casually look at the furs and hides he has in his cart to see if there is any good pieces to supplement his own armour to make it less chaffing over his arms. Overhearing the last part, his full attention turns to the trader waiting to hear what he says about the area around Calling Horns.

"Safe?" Aelan chuckles. "Yeah, Calling Horns is about the safest you're gonna get anywhere east of here, but safe isn't free."

He eyes the party. "You all can probably earn your keep with your weapons. People like me have to pay our share to people like you if we want to stay inside the wall. As for outside the wall? The usual threats, but more of them. Ogres and trolls mostly, the occasional other random beast... it's like they're being driven out of the Evermoors..."

“Being driven out, you say? Intriguing. Migration forced by something nastier, or collaboration? Are they driven away, or driven to?” pondered the Dragonborn.

He had been hoping for more info on the doppelganger, but it seemed that there wasn't much more on that from this guy.

He took a moment to review what he had heard in the 'discussion' that he had been ... mostly ignoring when he was distracted by mention of his foe.

He thought what their 'informant' was saying about their destination. While he chaffed at the delay, it might be worth spending some time being 'sell swords' to get some coin and ... hopefully ... some useful information.

"Maybe we should go and find out", he said in answer to Kriv's pondering.

The scout shared Kriv's concerns.

"I do wonder, what could drive trolls and ogres out of the Evermoors?"

She knew (and was sure her companions knew) that the answer was 'giants'.

"You say that Calling Horns was safe, but not free? What did you mean by that, specifically? We are headed there are want to be prepared for what we shall encounter there. Also, you mentioned his twin," she added as she shot a glance pointing towards Bern. "What did you mean by 'supporting' his twin? Did you encounter him? Did he provide a name? What was he up to? As you can see, we are quite interested in the behavior of this doppelganger and the dwarf with him. Anything you share with us is said in confidence sir."

The merchant chuckles as the questions keep coming, but rather than answer he shakes his head and raises his hand, palm forward, as if to indicate 'stop with all the questions!'

"Hey, I'm no expert here," he says, hand returning to his lap and a loose hold on the reins. "I buy and sell, mostly from and to hunters, so most of what I know is secondhand. I've seen 'im..." a head tilt toward Bern "... enough to know what he looks like, and heard enough to know he's probably trouble. Rumors say he's buying weapons from the town's blacksmith and selling... well, not to the hunters, you can guess who's buying. That's really about all I know... enough to know it's too risky for me to keep doing business there."

After a moment's pause, he directly answers Zindra's question. "As for the town... Tamalin -- she's the innkeeper -- and her deputies keep the place pretty safe, but for merchants and farmers they pay for that safety. Travelers pay for a good night's sleep at the inn. And she'll often hire swords like yourself to... look into things. So if you're as inquisitive as you seem to be, maybe she'll pay you to answer your own questions."

He grins, seeming to be chuckling quietly at his own joke.

"Now, if you want to know who to buy and sell from, that I can give you expert advice."

"I would also suspect that the local bandits are probably coming into Calling Horns to spend their coin. Being the closest town. Is there more than one tavern there?"

Davroar figures it would just be a matter of waiting to identify one or two of the bandits and then follow them out to wherever they have thier camp.

She waves the others forward to hear what she's heard already. As they approach, she says, "These are my companions, good folk one and all. And friends, this here is Aelan, a merchant that has just been where we are headed. It seems Bern, that your twin has been tarnishing your reputation further. It appears he's dealing arms and is working with some dwarf."

Having been through Calling Horns several time already, she answered Daroar's question. "Calling Horns started as a simple road-side inn but it's grown into a small settlement. Aelan says that the innkeeper, Tamalin, has deputies and inferred that she runs a tight ship and has deputies. I don't know many inn keepers that have deputies. Aelan also says that it is costly to stay there. I'm guessing that the inn is the only place in town."

Aelan was going to answer Davroar's tavern question but Zindra explains more, and he's happy to not have to describe everything. He does offer a quick jest. "Only one inn but it's probably large enough to fit two taverns in," he says with a chuckle.

To Zindra he shrugs. "It's not too expensive. Fair, really, and as I said... you can earn your keep in ways other than coin."

"Guess the inn's our best choice." Other than camping outside, it's their only option for lodging, and he nods in agreement that they should all keep together.

"Before we go. Any other important people we should know about at Calling Horns, Aelan?"

This Tamalin person sounds like the main leader of the settlement, but Aelan really did not say that, and it would be nice to know who is, or who to avoid.

"Important?" the merchant smiles to Davroar. "Well that would be Tamalin. She's one of the two people there I trust."

He pauses for effect, then adds, "The other is someone everyone in the town will tell you not to trust... she's... not quite all there..."

The words are accompanied by his hand drawing a circle around his ear, a universal sign for craziness.

"Witch who lives just this side of the town. Heart of gold. Don't trust what anyone else says about her."

She likes to be on the road, each day fresh, new places, new experiences. She willingly assists in setting up the camp and helping to make an evening meal.

"Fire? or no fire?"

It is a consideration. Fire can attract enemies but also provides hot food, warmth and possible defence.

She nods agreement. The group has had more than enough issues with conflict in darkness. "As you know, I need no sleep. I will watch from out of the firelight so as to not ruin my Darkvision. In the meantime, some rabbit stew would be nice I think."

"Aye, set a fire." says Arus, scanning around the northern landscape. "I'll circle around; see what if aught is in the area."

The triton is no scout but his horse has animal senses enough and should be tempting enough to draw out any large predators.

She smiles and raises an eyebrow at Bern. As the Ranger in the group, she expected that he would go hunt and bring back the rabbit. Of course Davroar would be another option, but she thought the Druid might have more difficulty killing game.

ooc: Sindar can certainly afford to spend a 3rd level spell on the road, especially since it will result in a long rest at which he will be able to replenish his used spell slots.

Davroar

Just before Bern and Zindra set out he offers, "Need a hunting dog? If not, I'll be here." Davroar figures the two will find something easy enough, so he will help in gathering some firewood as well as dig out a small fire pit for the group.

Zindra and Bern head off to hunt. Small game is plentiful for the patient, and they catch 1d6 rabbits each.

Meanwhile, those still at camp await Sindar's shelter-making ritual which is bound to be entertaining, while also setting up a fire and preparing equipment to cook the evening meal.

Jaliera

A campfire, the company of friends, sharing the chores together which give a relaxing companionship. Jaliera is happy with her lot in life. There was an awful time when she thought she would never be happy again after her parents died in the fire and the Guild got their claws into her. But that is all behind her now. She owes her Mentor a great deal.

There seemed to be a lot of them, but they seemed very adept at evading his arrows. He settled for the three he had and went to see how Zindra had fared.

Sindar

He started his work by figuring out where the dome of force would be in place once he finished his ritual, using the campfire fire as the center point. Knowing the diameter allowed him to figure out his path.

He didn't perform the ritual till they were ready to have their shelter in place.

He started a little diddy to weave his Leomunds Tiny Hut spell into place, a step, and verse at a time. His skill with his lyre was evident, even if the wording might be tailored for the particular effect.

"With a step here and a step there, we begin to weave a place to rest our heads.
It will serve us well in our nightly stead.
Offering a view of the night sky, while keeping the darkness by,
We will be protected by the magic little hut.

Tut tut, a magical hut might be little, but it is nothing to fiddle.
Tut tut, a magical hut won't keep us warm, but it might keep us safe.
Tut tut, a magical hut for us waifs, and we can rest.
Tut tut, a magical hut that will allow us to rise feeling our best."

The verses varied from there, but they were as nonsensical, and the chorus which is repetitive is where the magical dome is reinforced.
At the conclusion of the ritual, the dome of force sprung into existence.

From outside the dome, you can't see in, but when inside you can see out. The Leomund's Tiny Hut is a 10' foot radius around and above. It lasts eight hours.

The seven rabbits certainly provide enough sustenance for the party since they didn't overly push themselves, and all goes according to plan as the meal and shelter are completed during the waning hours of daylight.

Sindar's hut allows those inside it when cast to pass through it, and that appears to apply to the smoke from the fire as well, which is a good thing for those who like to breathe. [OOC: Was Zhu in the hut or away from the fire?]

Zhu's decision to stay away from the fire -- which only requires being outside the hut thanks to its opacity -- proves useful shortly after darkness settles around the party, as she can easily see a light in the distance to the east, probably about a mile away, flickering slightly and occasionally being blocked by an intervening object. Anyone who had traveled much in their life would make the assumption it was some other party around a campfire, but apparently without the services of a bard.

(OOC - She is inside the Hut when Sindar first casts it so she can enter and leave freely later. She then exits to enter Reverie and keep watch. If she needs to wake those inside she can re-enter and do so.)

Zhu

Once the rabbits are skinned and cleaned she asks if anyone minds if she keeps the pelts.

(WARNING - NSFW Comment coming - Rabbit pelts make perfect liners for chain mail bikini tops and bottoms....... wink )

She settles down, cross-legged and goes into Reverie. Once it is fully dark the distant light attracts her attention. Rising, she enters the Hut and gently touches Arus awake. "There's a campfire off a bit that way", she points in the direction. "I am going to take a look. If I'm not back in an hour come look for me?"

ooc: The range is how far away the owl can be from the wizard before they lose connection. Think Bluetooth or wifi smile A mile is very reasonable and remember that the owl has Keen Hearing and Sight. The owl has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or sight.

(OOC - Its DMs call on whether it can do that. It has the same intelligence as an Owl (2), and once it moves more than 100 feet from Jaliera she can't communicate with it anymore. So the question becomes whether it is intelligent enough to follow directions like that on its own for extended periods of time. For reference the D&D Wiki shows dogs (who can be trained to guard and such) with Intelligence of 4. Mastiff in the Compendium has Intelligence of 3. Really a DM call.)

[OOC] DM ruling: "Spells and other magical effects can’t extend through the dome or be cast through" the tiny hut. Whisper/Jaliera did not see any threats prior to the ritual being cast; and Jaliera must be on the same side (inside/outside) of the hut to communicate with the owl. If Jaliera and Whisper were both inside the hut when it was created AND then Jaliera gave such instructions for it to leave the hut and return on sightings as indicated, then you can assume the owl returned inside the hut to "alert" on detecting at approximately the same time as Zhu's whisper to Arus.

For Jaliera: if you wish to rise and leave the hut to see through Whisper's eyes, you may do so.

For the party: you may roll perception checks to either hear Zhu's whisper, or the owl returning to Jaliera, or both (2 rolls), if anyone wishes to give up thier sleep to further explore beyond what will be seen from this distance.

[Great post, Pandemonium, good to see you back!]

Arus

He had since returned from his circuit around the camp and been pleasantly surprised when Sindar conjured the dome-like magical hut.

"For sooth, this is a handy magic, Sindar!" the triton had exclaimed.

But soon enough he was asleep, perhaps dreaming of the very elf lady that stirs him awake now.

Rather than speak, he nods clearly to Zhu and holds up one finger for one hour, showing his understanding.

Afterwards Arus takes the opportunity to carry his armour outside the hut and don it. As quietly as possible, of course. He won't disturb the rest of the party unless absolutely essential.

The fire in the hut used to cook dinner has dwindled to embers, but the hut remains warm and dry for those inside, some sound asleep.

Those awake can see out, and may observe a cloud momentarily obscuring some of the stars above, whilst they decide whether to sleep or investigate the distant fire.

Sindar

Always a light sleeper he rouses at the soft whispering. He is content to wait as necessary.

OOC: I had intended to include all who wished to be included in the Tiny Hut, to do so. The point was for everyone to have a way to use it, so he would have waited on the Triton. In addition it is only good for eight hours, so he had to time it exactly for them to get as much rest as possible.

Perception checks:
Sindar Perception Checks
Pandemonium rolled 1d20+6,1d20+6 and got 25, 21

I assumed that would be good enough to wake him hence my post above. If it isn't I can adjust.

Thanks for the commentary on the creation of the hut, post!

OOC: Regarding sleeping:

A long rest (6 hrs sleep + 2 hrs light activity) may not be needed to recover anything but going sleepless may tax your constitution.

Specifically: after 24 hours without a long rest, players (other than those who don't require sleep) will make a DC 10 Con save or suffer 1 level of exhaustion (Disadvantage on Ability Checks). If you continue to go without long rests for the next few nights, the roll goes to DC15 at 48 hours, DC20 at 72 hours. Additional levels of exhaustion may result in losing speed, disadvantages on attack and saving throws, etc.
I won't enforce the 24 hour roll but will probably do them if you do two or more consecutive nights.

Reference: PHB p 177 (reference to Con check for going without sleep or marching a long time without rest), specific rules I'll use described in Xanathar's Guide to Everything, p 78.

There are 2 more nights ahead (planned) before you'll get to an inn and you are all venturing further away from civilization into the wilds where threats may increase, and it's more likely that you'll lose sleep on nights 2 or 3 than night 1. And no guarantees that your first night at the inn will allow you quality sleep, either. wink

None of this is certain. But all of it is possible. All this is to say... long rests are good things even if you haven't cast spells.

So you may not want to party all night and share grog by the fire with the group a mile away who are just now tapping the keg... wink

Whisper takes the direction to "investigate and report back" and flies off in the direction of the distant fire.

After several minutes, the familiar returns to Jaliera's side, and communicates several mental images with her telepathically. While they aren't as detailed as the visions in the Yartar sewers, they are sufficient to identify numbers and types of things seen. The images include 5 medium humanoid creatures, one large feline creature, and one dead cervid creature, whose meat was being cut up, some of it cooking over the fire. There is also an image of a large hand cart.

She relates what Whisper had seen.

"Not sure what the large feline is. Curious. I guess we go take a look?"

Zindra, Bern, Jaliera and Whisper set out to get a closer look at the distant fire and the party around it.

As they walk the mile-or-so, they undoubtably discuss what they'll do when they get closer...

Bern is +6 to stealth. Just sayin'.

Zindra
She begins to head out, assuming that Bern and Jaliera are joining him. She can see in the dark and knows that Jaliera needs to stop and concentrate on Whisper in order to see through her eyes and hear what she hears, so she will lead them close enough so that Jaliera can use Whisper effectively to get a better sense of what they are dealing with.

As the trio moves closer with occasional stops for Jaliera to observe through Whisper's eyes, more detail of the encampment and the actions there are evident. By the halfway point, about a half-mile away, a detailed picture has emerged:

The humanoid creatures are indeed humans, although of the larger variety equipped with leather armor. Two have swords; three have bows. Four of the five are involved in activities near the fire, while the fifth appears to be the designated watchman, aided by making hand signals that the feline creature appears to understand and follow, stalking away from the fire to scout much in the same way Jaliera employed Whisper hours earlier.

The dead creature appears to be an elk, and one of the humans is cutting its meat into thin strips with his dagger, which are being hung on a tented makeshift frame by another, with the glow of embers relocated from the fire to underneath that frame. A few larger pieces of meat can be seen in sequential stops being cooked on a spit, and eaten, accompanied by drink in goblets filled from a keg on the cart.

The humans, other than the watchman, appear in a good mood, conversing with each other (although it's too far to make out any words) and occasionally laughing.

The large cat isn't always visible when Jaliera/Whisper look, at least anywhere in the near vicinity of the fire. It's rather large, about three feet high and eight feet long, larger even than any of its human companions. It's a lighter color, likely grey, more easily seen near the fire.

"Barbarians," she whispered to Bern and Jaliera when Jaliera reported what she saw. "There are many different tribes. If they feel threatened at all, there could be unnecessary bloodshed."

"I won't stop you but if I am right and they are barbarians, a single, young, pretty girl like you could be their next prey. They might not roast you on the spit like that elk, but barbarians don't typically court their prey. If you decide to talk to them, Bern and I will hide with our bows nocked. If things go poorly, try and slip away from them. We'll provide cover fire."

OOC: Need some details on how Jaliera approaches (how fast she walks; how close (to the nearest 5 feet), when does she speak up (at what distance from the barbarians), what does she say, etc.). Also need specifics for the other two as well in the off chance (lol) ranged weapons come into play.

ooc: Bern can do something else but since both Zindra and Bern use long bows, they would know enough to position themselves about 140 feet (normal range up to 150) away and find cover both for safety and stealth. What light is there? There's probably a half moon at this time since the party left Phandelver about a dozen days earlier after High Harvestide.

Jaliera

She has her spells ready just in case. Thinks that color spray might be the most useful as it might aid her slipping away. She mentions this to the others, suggesting that if it does not go well then her biggest danger might be the big cat as she is sure it can track.

When everyone is ready, she will walk forward, not trying to hide until she should be in sight range.

"Good evening."

OOC 1: Bern and Zindra "taking cover" at 140 feet doesn't work if Jaliera is moving forward, so I'm going to assume you're following stealthily behind moving from cover to cover (although given the light discussion below that's hardly needed) at something less than 150 foot range. You may correct me if that's a bad assumption.

OOC 2: Whatever ambient light there is from the sky is not applicable in light (pun intended) of the fact that everyone is walking towards, and looking at, the light of the (not so) distant fire, which would impact their ability to also see in the surrounding darkness. I'm assuming within 20 feet of the fire is brightly lit and the next 20 feet is dimly lit (lightly obscured) and you can see everything within that radius easily, and those within that 40 foot radius of the fire can't see beyond it easily. This is to the benefit of the party as the darkness essentially works as "heavily obscured" for them, assuming they aren't wearing shiny armor or wielding shiny weapons that reflect the fire. Bern and Zindra can also easily see Jaliera silhouetted against the lighter area.

OOC 3: I did roll for the patrolling guardcat, and the dice were not in Jaliera's favor... I don't have a map created because there was a chance it wouldn't be needed but for now everything is linear distance to the fire, so hopefully my descriptions are sufficient. Let me know if you absolutely need a map.

Jaliera moves slowly toward the fire, trying to judge how far the barbarians can see toward her so she can announce herself. However, she does not reach that point before she is seen by the patrolling feline, who announces herself first with a loud growl.

Still 100 feet from the fire, Jaliera can see the creature to her right at about 20 feet away, its grayish fur reflecting the firelight. It isn't moving, and is poised to pounce, but does not immediately attack.

Alerted by the growl, the barbarian on watch quickly calls out in the common tongue, "Eh! Who goes there! Identify yourself!"

The other four take the moment to put down their cooking or eating or jerky-preparing tools and put their hands on their weapons, in case they might be needed.

OOC 4: Jaliera (or anyone else) feel free to alter your greeting, and if you do speak up, also do a Charisma (Persuasion) check. Not yet going turn-based unless anyone wants to move more or start combat...

"It's a trap!" one of the barbarians with a bow calls out, nocking an arrow and moving away from the fire into the dimmer area 30 feet from it, angling toward Jaliera's left side. One of his companion also nocks an arrow on his bow and moves toward her right in a similar fashion.

"Don't move, missy!" calls out the watchman. "Unless you want to be Lux's dinner! Who's with you?"

A fourth barbarian lights a torch from the fire, handing it to the watchman. The watchman draws his sword and he boldly starts to walk toward Jaliera with the flame held aloft.

The fifth barbarian tosses a small bag into the fire before drawing his sword and walking in the opposite direction to make sure they aren't being tricked. Burning whatever was in the bag releases an enchantment therein, making the fire burn a bright yellow, casting its light twice as far as before.

Control Flames
You choose nonmagical flame that you can see within range and that fits within a 5-foot cube. You affect it in one of the following ways:
You double or halve the area of bright light and dim light cast by the flame, change its color, or both. The change lasts for 1 hour.

Lux remains where she is, crouching at the ready and waiting to hear whether she'll get fresh dinner.

OOC: If Jaliera will be taking any other actions than obeying the order to not move, we'll roll initiative ... I've tried to set things up on Roll20...

OOC:
Aqua, Zindra has been corrected on Roll20. And if you need any setup fixes, let me know. It seems that Bern's token has light turned on. I kind doubt that.

Mike, Don't roll on Roll20, just roll here. The only reason to use Roll20 is to make a good, functional, tactical map. If you need to move, I'll help you out. You can't teach old dogs new tricks, eh?

Since you seem to need it...
Zindra Initiative
Neptune rolled 1d20+3 and got 9

Zindra didn't get to do anything while Jaliera approached but she will have prepared for combat. I'll describe it below. This is pretty much her standard operating procedure in these combat situations.

Zindra
Cautious of the situation, the second she saw the potential threat, she had cast Hunter's Mark. She will move it to the dangerous looking feline. She really doesn't want to harm it but Jaliera's safety is of primary importance. She aims at the creature ooc: Readies an action. If it begins to move in a hostile manner towards Jaliera, she'll let loose with the two arrows she has notched in the bow.

OOC: I had everyone roll initiative even if combat doesn't ensue, because someone is approaching with light, and which may have long-reaching effects on whether the party (or Jaliera, specifically) is recognized in a future encounter. So I wanted to make sure she was not unfairly identified. Thanks for the help on Roll20, Nep... I have no idea how to move players onto the map and thought it was a victory just to hack together a map and get it imported and the grid aligned. smile

Also the circle around Zindra is the night vision toggle. I had no idea about Bern's light. As you say, it's a good tactical map and not much else.

Initiative Order
Bern: 20
Aut (watchman): 20
Jaliera: 18
Archer S: 18
Lux (crag cat): 12

The watchman trots [Dash] toward the sound of Jaliera's voice, sword in one hand, torch in the other, arriving face-to-face. He doesn't attack (yet?) but scans the visible light around her, not seeing anyone else but his pet. The two archers offset from the fire behind him now have a clear visual target should they need it.

[Linked Image from i.ibb.co]

The watchman issues a repeat of his previous question.

"Pretty lass like you ain't sneakin' around at night alone. Who's with you and why are you here?"

He gestures with his torch toward the cat, clearly visible in dim light now. "Don't lie if you want to live. Lux ain't eaten yet."

With his experience in the mountains, Bern can identify that Lux is a crag cat.

Crag cats, sometimes called "Hunters-of-Men", are predators that are well adapted to almost all terrains. Crag cats are grey during most of the year, but they turn white during the winter to better hide in the snow. The cry of a crag cat resembles a scream of terror in order to attract humans. Crag cats have extraordinary resistance to magic and are capable of reflecting spells back to their casters.

Meta: this is a monstrosity, not a beast, for spells which matter.

"We were curious about your campfire and wondered who you were. So I came to find out."

All true. Jaliera has a fluttering of nerves deep in her belly but knows better than to show fear. She is carrying bow and rapier but has not drawn either.

"We are searching for someone, just checking he is not here."

The bow-wielding barbarian to the southwest of the campfire moves further out and away from the fire, still keeping his bow trained on Jaliera while he waits for the impasse to be broken.

It seems that while the barbarians remain suspicious of Jaliera, they do not wish to draw first blood, and her fearless but peaceful stance at least changes the tactics. The barbarian closest to the fire, who handed Jaliera's interrogator his torch, calls out an unintelligible word, with Lux appears to respond to. Fortunately for Jaliera, she does not pounce, but instead moves diagonally toward the path Jaliera followed into the camp, nose down to acquire her scent as she follows it backwards. The cat is still in the dim light of the torch and visible to all... for now.

Meanwhile, back at the camp, a curious badger has been exploring at night, and discovers a dome in its usual hunting grounds. After exploring its circumference briefly, it finds a nice spot to begin burrowing, perhaps hoping to build a den underneath what it perceives as a giant rock.

The digging is quiet enough not to awaken those who are sleeping, but those who are awake may find some amusement in the animal's confusion.

The barbarian closest to the fire, who had earlier handed the watchman the torch and most recently gave Lux a command to track, strolls confidently and unhurriedly out toward Jaliera. While armed with a bow, it remains slung over his shoulder, and the hand-axe at his side also remains there, leaving his hands open. Something about his appearance or demeanor -- perhaps an older age, or maybe simply his calm attitude -- indicates that he's the leader of this group.

"We... welcome you," he begins, a pause and an emphasis on the plural in response to Jaliera's own statement. "You can see all of us," he continues, both hands extending with palms open to indicate his hunting party, again pausing for emphasis, "But we still can not see all of you." In context, the plural 'you' is clearly implied. "And we do not like surprises."

He pauses, and then calls out in a loud, booming voice easily understood by Zindra and Bern, "Show yourself and we will not harm you! No such promise if we find you first!"

Returning his voice to a normal level, he tells Jaliera, "We are hunters and expert trackers, although we are after elk, not warriors such as yourself. Come with me to the fire where we can share information about this person you seek and await the arrival of the rest of your party." His left hand extends toward Jaliera, accompanying the command with a gesture of friendship, while his right hand drops to his side, near the axe, subtly indicating that the request is not optional... and that she likely will remain a "guest" until others arrive.

"Aut," he concludes, apparently addressing the watchman and attempting to repeat the name he heard, using the common tongue so Jaliera is aware of the order. "Give Jal-ee-air-a your torch and go with Lux."

Said torch is offered with a grunt.

Meanwhile, the archer to the northwest of the fire also moves further away from the fire, maintaining aim.

Jaliera

She knows she can send a mental command to Whisper if they need help but it is not called for yet, Whisper remains safely aloft. The others are in their magic hut. Also safe she thinks. She hopes Zindra and Bern will come forward but does not call out herself in case it spooks these hunters. Things are in the balance at the moment.

She smiles and takes the offered torch.

"I thank you for your welcome. I have two friends with me and they have been watching. Not all strangers are as gracious as you. Would you like me to speak to them?"

"Yes, please do summon your two friends," the leader says, smiling as a specific number is offered. He'll still have Aut investigate, of course. Trust but verify.

Aut nods at the mention of two others as he walks away to catch up with Lux near the edge of the torch's light, fading into the darkness as Jaliera takes the torch and moves in the opposite direction. The pair of archers maintain their defensive positions, but do not track Jaliera as she moves closer.

"We may have been more gracious in the day time," the leader continues. "Although then you may not have found us. So. Tell me more of who you seek. Our tribe has covered much of this area of late."

In the Tiny Chairless Hut with Arus

The dragonborn turned his inscrutable face towards the Triton and deadpanned,

"Usually."

Under the Tiny Chairless Hut

The badger continues digging under the hemispherical rock, making a nice den for itself. Until it digs underneath the handle of Kriv's maul, which falls down through the bottom of the hut and hits the badger on the head. It scurries away quickly.

"Guys, come join us at their fire!"

She calls out to Bern and Zindra, then sits down.

"We are looking for someone who looks identical to one of my two friends but that is not his true appearance. He has gathered himself a reputation for trouble which of course makes suspicion fall upon my friend who is innocent. This look alike is somewhere ahead of us and we think with a dwarf."

"We better join Jaliera," she sighed as she stood up. She slung her bow over her shoulder in a non-threatening manner and began to approach.

"Hail and well met!" she calls out.

"Mmmm, a dwarf, you say," the hunting party leader acknowledges, but doesn't answer yet, waiting for the others to join, particularly since Bern's likeness is relevant.

Bern and Zindra move past the watchman and his cat, who let them pass without incident, and follow their trail back far enough to conclude there is not a surprise attack coming. A loud shout in a different tongue is heard by those around the fire, and the three guarding the fringes of the fire relax and return to their chores, one taking the time to toss another pouch into the fire, returning it from its bright yellow to just a plain old normal nonmagical fire.

Zindra's greeting is acknowledged with a smile and nod. "Well met," he replies. "I hope you'll forgive our suspicion. We are responsible for most of our tribe's sustenance this week," he says, gesturing toward both the jerky smoking tent and the cart, loaded with several casks and jars, "and friends rarely sneak around at night."

When all are present, he makes his introduction. "I am Skorr. Have you eaten? We have plenty to go around."

He moves toward the fire at the invitation, nodding in greeting.

In the tiny, chairless, undermined hut with Arus

With a thought, the Dragonborn's maul was in his hand, and he glanced down the hole. "Curious. I wasn't aware the hut was penetrable."

"I would be happy to sample some of your food Skorr, thank you. And we understand your suspicion, it was the same suspicion that brought us out here."

She smiles at her two companions as they arrive.

"And the lookalike we are pursuing looks identical to my friend here."

She points to Bern.

Sitting in her Reverie she can still see and hear what goes on around her, and she replies to Kriv. "Things may not enter, but they can leave."

The lead barbarian gestures to one of the others, who produces a plate with three skewers of freshly cooked elk, offering it to Jaliera.

He glances at Bern, squinting a bit and shaking his head. "Don't recall seeing him, but perhaps others in the tribe may have done so," he explains. Since the whole party is here, he also finishes answering Jaliera's previous request.

"As to the dwarf you inquired about earlier... I do recall a sizeable party led by a dwarf that passed through a few weeks ago. Heavily armed. We kept our distance..."

Aut, the watchman, can be seen returning to the outer reaches of the fire's light, although Lux the crag cat is nowhere to be seen, likely continuing her patrol.

"Greetings Skorr. I am Zindra," she started, making sure to provide her name and further reduce any potential threat level.

"We are interested in finding that dwarf and suspect he's up to nothing good. Do you recall in what direction that group was headed?"

She politely accepted the skewer of elk and took a bite.

"From Yartar, headed east," comes the quick reply.

"Most travelers we see in those numbers are going the other way, and usually don't look like a small army," he continues. "I figure something's going on that way and I'd like to go, but our chief insists on...."

He's abruptly cut off by one of the more suspicious barbarians -- the one who called out that it was a trap. "You gonna just tell 'em everything? We don't even know them!"

Skorr chuckles. "Well, you don't care about us, anyway. So do you know what the dwarf and his friends are up to?"

"They always seem to be one step ahead. We have encountered giants. There is talk that this lookalike and the dwarf are dealing in arms to them. That could cause a whole lot of trouble for folk in these parts."

She took a small bite of her meat.

"Hey Skorr, this is good."

"Speaking of which, when you say small army do you mean of humans, elves, halflings and/or dwarves? Or are these armies made up of hobgoblins, gnolls, orcs, ogres or trolls? And have you seen giants?"

She takes another bite and nods her head in agreement with Jaliera about the food.

"It's even better after we smoke it," Skorr brags, gesturing to the strips of jerky hanging under a tent nearby. "And even better than that when we grind it up and mix it with nuts and honey. "Maend here is the best there is," he says, gesturing at his companion, back at his meat-cutting task.

"As for army, it's a bit of an exaggeration," he continues with a shrug. "Twenty or so? Probably mostly human and dwarf, never got close enough to see any different."

Aut

When Zindra mentions giants, Aut calls over from his watchman patrol. "I saw a young fire giant just the other day, not too far from here. Digging around for something." He shrugs, then goes back to looking outward.

"Quite a while ago we were in a town that was raided by a mix of giants, hobgoblins and the like. The giants there dug up something and then ran off with it, essentially sacrificing their comrades as they did."

"Hmmmm. In what direction was that? There is something going on with the giants and that has some folks worried. We're trying to find out what that is."

She continued to chat politely with their hosts but after a short while she says, "We need to get back to our camp. Our watch is ending soon and we need our sleep, as I'm sure you do. It is good to have met you and befriended you."

She bowed her head and added a prayer, "We pray that your sight be straight and your aim will be true, we pray that the game you pursue will feel no pain, we thank you Old Father Silvanus for this land where we hunt, we thank you for the sights from where we stand, we pray for your safety, and one and all.”

Then, turning to Jaliera and Bern she asks, "Are you ready?"

The watchman grunts in response to Zindra's question, gesturing to the south. "Hills by the river down there," he answers succinctly.

Skorr

The leader adds, "That was the one we saw, but we've heard of that happening at least one other place," he adds, gesturing toward the east. "No attack, just digging. Probably related but..." he shrugs.

As the party aims to depart, the watchman calls out an unintelligible word, and the crag cat approaches within the dim light of the fire, where she is tossed a large piece of raw elk meat to distract her.

"But they turned out to be nice in the end. I'm ready for my bed, don't know about you too?"

(in the Tiny Hut)

He crouches next to the hole, mirroring Kriv's curiosity. But ultimately they are in the wild and if the hut is equally as large below ground as it is above, they're probably room-sharing with a menagerie of small furry animals and creepy-crawlies.

"Convenient chamber pot?" Arus suggests to the dragonborn.
