The title of “York’s Most Haunted Pub” makes the Golden Fleece a must visit in York. The ancient building which can be traced as far back as 1503, stands opposite the historic Shambles and is easily accessible for students approaching from Fossgate or Piccadilly.





Further into the pub and down to the second bar (having two bars is surely a reason for a place on this list), you will find Saul Goodfellow sat at the bar.



Now I can hear you asking “Who on earth is Saul Goodfellow?” and you would be right to ask that question. The man's skeleton seems to move each time I visit; sometimes more than once! The Golden Fleece is considered to be so haunted that Ghostly Inns Ltd are currently compiling a book about the ghosts that reside within the pub and there is a spooky ghost tour starting at 6:45pm every night which will take you through the streets of York and back to the Fleece to get that last pint in. Perhaps the ghosts are enticed by the last orders bell which seems to ring a good forty five minutes after other local pubs – great if you want to stop off for that last drink before heading home!

The Golden Fleece is also one of the 12 real ale pubs near the university and it serves good food at a reasonable price.



The gang had arranged a rendezvous this evening, not sure how many of the original group would show.

Levon
He was glad that most of those who were with him on holiday (as those Brits say) were going to meet for some grub and beer. The Golden Fleece was a good choice for the gathering. It had good food and the ale flowed rather freely.

The recent few weeks had been rather stressful for him. His studies had become a burden lately with him having signed up for some classed he assumed would be a cakewalk but ended up requiring hours upon hours of study. Part of the problem was the accents. Figuring out conversational British was tough enough, but he had a history professor that spoke with a deep Scottish accent and another professor, a sociology professor that spoke like he was raised in Calcutta. Those classes required him reading and studying the text deeply. He didn't mind reading but it was not how he learned best. His felt like his brain was about ready to melt in his head. He needed a drink or ten and an evening where he could just unwind.

That made him early. He saddled up and placed his coin on the bar as he ordered a pint of ale to get him started. He hoped that the others wouldn't be too late.

{Skye}

She was running late, having just made arrangements for someone to cover her shift at the Shelter. The schedule on Skye's phone was booked solid - except for that dinner on Thursday night. Cancelled because Kate had said last night, "it's not you, it's me..." or some shit like that.

"Gaawddess!" Skye burst through the pub door emphasizing the word like an expletive with her un-distinctive California accent. She spotted Levon queued up for a pint. Even from here, he made her smile and feel a bit better. Life and work were tough - but she loved her mates!

Henri

Stifling a yawn as he steps through the doors of the pub, he looks around and then spots Levon at the bar. He gives an acknowledging wave and disappears for a couple of minutes to wash up in the men's room, only to come back to find Skye has also arrived.

"Hello, hello!", he says to both. Being almost a year now here, his English is improving and he is catching himself from interjecting French words more often than not. "What's the house drink tonight?"

Henri does silently remind himself to be careful in not ordering too much. While volunteer work looks great on his resume, it does little to help his wallet.

Emma
Emma came in after Henri, and wave to everyone, looking a little distracted and a bit windblown. "Sorry! My da called, and..." a quick eye roll, "Me going out... He worries..." It was said with an exasperated affection.

With that she flashed a smile at the three already there, as she slid into an open slot. "Lord it is good to see you all!"

The bar is busy as it usually is at this hour, mostly students and a few familiar faces. A girl comes over. It is Miranda whom Some of them know from the martial arts group. Her two friends hang back as she orders drinks for the three of them.



"Hey Levon, Skye. Have you seen the notice that went up today? There is to be a martial arts inter university competition at Durham university. They are asking for those who want to compete and plan to fill a coach so others can come and support too. A week away from classes! What not to like?"

{Skye}

They all seemed to converge to the bar at the same time. Skye was in her latest rock-style creation of a super-short jacket dress, that elicited some stares. A dagger-eyed look cut off one bloke’s attempt at a cat-call. Part of her outfit’s inspiration was from Atomic Blonde - and there was no doubt she would kick the guy’s ass!

She high-fived Henri and then Skye gave Emma a hug and laughed, “If it’s not one parent, it’s the other!”

Miranda bounded up all excited. The girl seemed younger than the rest of them somehow, but she was still likable. The martial arts tourney sounded intriguing. Skye had not heard about it yet.

“It would be fun to beat up on someone besides Levon for a change!” She give him a tickle-jab between the ribs. “Right, champ?” She winked.

Henri

He turns to Emma returning his own smile to her as she arrives and says, "Bienvenu!"

His attention then shifts to the three newcomers. Not being a part of the martial arts group that Levon and SKye are in, Henri flashes a smile at the pretty Miranda, but will remain quiet while hoping someone will speak her name.

Dating for him has been more miss than hit lately, and at this point Henri is always looking for a woman that might be receptive to him.

{Skye}

Weaving away from Levon's inevitable swipe back, Skye caught Henri's shy silence looking over at Miranda. **So cute!** she thought with a big heart-swell.

"Um. Sorry - I should introduce folks," she interjected. "Miranda - I think you know Emma, but this is Henri. Our resident sound engineer of the Mystery Gang - and quite the dancer too from our pub nights out."

She winked giving him the go ahead to talk the other girl up. Skye had let slip her nickname for their little troupe after their Scooby Doo adventures last winter -- though she had to change it up a bit for copyright purposes.

Miranda

"Oh yes I'd forgotten about your serial killer episode. Must have been exciting? Or scary? And hi Henri."

She nods to Emma and smiles at Henri.

"Are you French?"

Ian

The door opens again and a windswept, tall dark haired lad enters the pub, dark eyes looking around for a moment before lighting on the group and he smiles, heading over in their direction as he shrugs off his jacket. There is no hint of the limp that he had had for a while.

"Hey."

Emma

Em nods back at Miranda. And slides a look at Henri as well, then grinned at Skye. HHmm. The plot, like a good stew, thickens. Match making time? Looks like Skye thought so, and she gave her friend another grin. This could be fun.

As Ian approached Emma gave him a quick appraisal. "Hey yourself. Ian. Moving pretty good there." She dipped her head towards Miranda. "Ian, this is Miranda. Miranda... Ian."

Ian

He smiled at her and nodded, coming over to take a chair and sit.

"Yes, my leg has fully recovered. Hello." he said, turning to look at Miranda.

{Skye}

**Ohhhh, girl's gonna play that game with my boys!** Skye recognized Em's mischievous grin. It seemed a bit high school-ish and very Shakespearean - but maybe a little competition over a girl might be fun. Of course, she'd have to make sure there was a back-up girlfriend - and that they all would still be friends at the end of the play.

"Oh....!" Skye nodded towards Emma as she bumped Henri forward by "accident" between Ian and Miranda. "Sorry. My bad. And not even a pint yet!" She pulled away, hoping her bet would make the best of it. Then circled back to Em's arm spinning them both out just far enough.

"Now let's play nice," Skye whispered conspiratorially.

Henri

He takes a single unwanted extra step towards Miranda with Skye's 'clumsiness' and finding himself a little closer to Miranda than expected. Taking advantage of his position he palms and then reaches up and instantly produces a twenty pence coin seemingly out of thin air.

"Un sou pour une danse?"

He will then look surprised and says with a wider smile, "I hope you'll stay around Miranda, since I have twenty here. And yes, I am from Montréal. I haven't completely developed my English accent yet."

Emma

Emma hid a laugh with a cough. "Promise," she whispered. "All up to them now, Skye. But they look cute together, don't you think?"

Everyone deserved to be happy, and if Miranda was Henri's ticket, then he should get on and ride. Well, she thought, maybe that is a turn of phrase that can wait until they know each other well enough to ride.

Miranda

She says Hi to Ian and takes the 20p with a grin.

"Bribery and entertainment!"

She laughs, then addresses them all.

"Oh please say you'll sign up for the competition and/or supporting. My circumstances have changed and I don't want to go on my own. You guys will be fun."

Levon

Indeed, he did try to swipe back at Skye but his effort was half-hearted. Skye was getting better at martial arts and gave him a challenge, so he allowed her the fib.

"Nice to meet ya Miranda," he said even as Skye pushed Henri towards her.

"Henri, you think you can handle her?" he asked. "Lemme know if you need rescuing."

Finally he addressed the competition. "I guess we should enter that tourney, eh Skye? Show those Brits what Yanks are all about!"

Emma

"Well, as they say, if you cannot be an athlete, be an athletic supporter." A line from one of her favorite movies. "Of course I will be there, cheering you all on."

Henri

Having only seen professional mixed martial arts on the odd occasion when it is on a pay-per-view night at a pub, he is curious what it looks like at the University level.

"Sure, I'd like to come too. We should make t-shirts Emma. Just need to come up with a team name for our fighters."

Miranda grins at Levon whom she knows from the Martial Arts club and looks generally happy that the group are responding positively.

{Skye}

"We're in!" Skye nods to both Levon and Miranda. "And those tees better slap hard!"

Miranda

"Well it depends if we get selected for the team. Mr Harding (martial arts teacher) says they have been asked to send a team of 4. No idea if he will select or get us to compete for a place. Fingers crossed."

She smiles around at the others.

"I need to get a drink."

Emma

"I agree, Henri! We need T-shirts and some kind of cheer that we can do. Intimidate the other team, support our brave warriors... " Wheels in her mind began to turn.

Henri

"A cheer? Hmmm..."

He absently scratches his jaw line in thought as he thinks on what to do for that too. Miranda's suggestion though brings him to say, "Drinks first sounds great."

As he waits to order and get his beer, he adds, "Perhaps if we can find something in common between all the fighters, like a favourite move or something else, then rift off of that."

Pulling out his phone, he quickly does a search for MMA nicknames, and starts looking it over.

Miranda moves with him to the bar.

Levon

"Teams of four? Let's see. Me... Skye... Miranda... Who makes four?" he said as he joined the others at the bar.

Ian

He held up his hands and shrugged.

"Don't look at me. Unless it involves a saber, I am afraid I am not useful." he said.

There are others in York's martial arts club. No guarantee that Levon, Skye or Miranda will be selected.

Emma

"The question isn't who will be on the team with you, the question is... who don't you want on the team? Which four of you together will give you the best odds of things?" Em was still learning, just starting out really, but a mixed team might be what they were looking for. Speed in one, sheer power in another? Who knew, really? Not Emma. Her foray into this type of thing was mostly Cobra Kai... a show based on an ancient martial arts car-washing movie her dad had enjoyed.

{Skye}

"Emma has a good point." Skye took a drink of her pint. "What are the rules of the tourney? What can we leverage - other than a bar fight?" She winked.

Henri

Finding himself beside Miranda at the bar, he offers her with a smile, "What can I get you?"

She smiles at him.

"You sure?"

She is a student and knows how hard up they all are but then Henri is a foreign student, might be different for him.

"Half a cider please, the Aspall draft. Thanks."

She decides to find out a bit more. He seems nice.

"So are you on a grant, same as the rest of us UK students, with a student loan to pay back at the end?"

Henri

Miranda would notice he does not seem to be rich as he pulls out his rather thin money clip of now less-than 60 pounds to pay for the drinks. His arrangement with his sister and her husband though will take some explaining, as he does not want to appear to be a spoiled young man.

"No, no official loan. My sister is a professional musician and her husband is a music executive producer for Republic Records. They're doing well enough to pay for my university. As long as I graduate top 10 percent, I'll get a job through Republic and then I'm supposed to pay them back."

Miranda

"So you are into music? That's cool. Singing? songwriting? Do you play an instrument?"

She grins.

"Nice you have family that close. I only have my Mum. She is really proud that I'm at Uni. Tells everyone." She laughs. "So I have to do well for her."

The latter sounds like a solemn vow.

{Skye}

She nodded Emma towards the two now at the bar. "Maybe? Who knows...?" Skye smiled, but then followed up laughing. "But that leaves us without dates still."

Levon
He was right behind Skye and Emma and when Skye said what she said to Emma, he responded, as he clutched his heart dramatically, "Oh how that stings. I am just the hired muscle!"

Henri

He laughs at the thought of him trying to sing when Miranda mentions that.

"Definitely not a singer, and not into songwriting, but yeah, I can play the guitar."

With drink in hand he will take a quick gulp, and as he walks back to where the rest are, he asks Miranda, "What courses are you in?"

Miranda

She blushes slightly.

"I'm studying Medical Engineering. I want to help people, save lives and all of that but I faint at the sight of blood. So I gave up on wanting to be a doctor. Swooning on the surgery floor is not a good look."

She laughs, relieving her tension.

"So do you play in a group?"

Henri

"No, I just play for myself mostly. Now if you want to hear some excellent guitar playing you'll have to sit in on a session with Levon here."

He nods to Levon and says to him, "I still remember that impromptu session you did at that pub back last December. You got everyone up dancing or toe-tapping that day."

Emma

Em looked at Skye. "I think we can fix that, don't you?" Emma looked around the room for potential dates for the two of them. "Need a wingwoman?"

Ian

He looked over at Levon and shook his head.

"Always the bridesmaid, never the bride."

Levon
"Yeah. It seems we are to be on our own pal. We practically saved their lives and I suppose our eternal fate is to become body guards," he quipped back at Ian.

"So I heard you're pretty decent with a blade? Is that true?"

{Skye}

Levon's faux drama did make her heart ache just a bit too. Skye really had a big crush on him last year, but somehow it just hadn't worked out with the way everything had gone. **Sometimes it's best to be just friends.** she had convinced herself. So - to play along...

"You think you're getting paid, brah?" she teasingly dismissed Levon with a regal wave of the hand. But she laughed and gave him a wink that reaffirmed their connection. And yet she kept giggling as Em plotted for them. "Is it really a good idea for me to drink and look for a rebound, tonight?"

Miranda

"Well I can sing a bit. Choir mostly but I do like more modern stuff. Maybe we could form a group?"

She giggles.

"Have to have a good name though."

She takes her drink which had been delivered to the counter along with the others.

"Shall we grab a table?"

Ian

He nodded at Levon.

"I have been studying fencing since I was 12. Father thought it was a healthy sport and, I have to admit, it is rather enjoyable."

Emma

"You are young, hot, and a hero. Skye, when is it not a good idea to have a drink and look for a rebound?" Emma gave her friend a wink. "Hhmm should I play cupid for everyone while I am at it?" She looks over at the boys, then around the room wondering who they might match up with.

{Skye}

"Hot and a hero? Damn skippy! As my old man would say." She laughed thinking about how Lt. Colonel Jones would say the phrase a lot!

"Em...darling..." Skye did her best posh accent and shook off her bit of morose over Kate. "You are a fantastic Archer. Fantabulous friend and my best wingwoman. Let's play!"

There are quite a lot of students in the bar, all looking for a good time. Karaoke is starting up on a small stage in the far corner, a few gathering there. At a table in the middle, a small group of guys are having an arm wrestling competition.

Levon

"Then we should spar, just to keep it up. Meanwhile, let's see if we can earn some coin. See those are wrestlers? Maybe they'll cough some up, eh?"

Henri

Looking around himself, he suggests, "Well lets see if we can grab a table by the karaoke. Miranda can wow us with her singing, and Levon can win us some more drinking money."

Miranda nods and they collect their drinks and find a table not too far from the karaoke but closer to the arm wrestling. There are a couple of people to one side waiting for the mike, so Miranda sits for now.

The three guys at the next table seem to be having an arm wrestling drinking competition. Whoever loses has to drink.

Emma

Emma nods to Skye. "Let's do this, and who shall we set the boys up with?" Em scans the room, nodding to a few likely ducks to Skye. "Hmmm catch their attention with some rousing Karaoke?" If they could get the boyos involved as well, it might be easy to talk them up while they were bravely on stage.

{Skye}

She had followed Em's nods to the best prospects for the night. There was a decent smattering of girls and boys in the crowd - but no one struck her particularly yet. But she had to laugh. "Ha! Looks like the boys want to play with boys," Skye indicated Levon moving over to shark the arm wrestlers. "But maybe it'll help pay for drinks for the night! 'Cuz we'll need it if I'm singing! But what the hell!"

Skye took a swig of her Guinness and motioned to Reg, the barkeep, for a shot of her fav Red Breast Irish whiskey. She really did love singing - she even had a secret love of country music -- mostly when she was in the shower or car. But her off-key voice was also why belting our Joan Jett worked better for her most the time - and why she was a Producer not an Artist.

Emma

Liquid courage it was, and Emma ordered a shot of vodka. "I think we should all take to the stage... It'd be fun, and a bit different." Emma had not done Karaoke, but she did have a decent voice, and why not? Let the evening be a little wilder than she normally had and try something new and different. "Think we could get the others on board?"


OOC: Whiskey Ward rides again.....

Henri

He sits down next to Miranda at the table, and watches one arm wrestling contest to quickly find that it is not for money. "Well, looks like no beer money involved there", he says to Miranda with a slightly disappointed tone. With it being more of an drinking contest, he will turn his attention back to the group asks, "Levon, you still going to give the arm wrestling a try?"

Levon
"I suppose I can be your entertainment for the night."

He gets up and walks over to the arm wrestlers and says to the guys there, "My friends insist on seeing me get embarrassed. I hear that you're wrestling for pints?"

{Skye}

"Oh. We'll make them join us!" Skye laughed conspiratorially. Levon had already headed over to win them drinks, so it would be up to she and Em to get them started. Once Emma had her drink - she clinked with her own shot glass. "I think we're up first - what should we sing?"


OOC: Awesome! We never did finish our Whisky Ward discography! BTW sorry for the delayed response. Finishing up one job and starting a new director position on Monday.

Henri

He will stand up to watch Levon do a round of arm wrestling to cheer him on, but will remain near their table and ask Miranda, "Who do you think is the strongest out of your MMA team?"

The small karaoke stage has fallen silent as Emma and Skye make their way over to duet. As they study the machine, they look at the 25 most popular songs:

There are three young men, probably students, arm wrestling for fun who seem to be taking drinking penalties if they lose. Lots of laughter. They welcome Levon and the dark curly dark haired male explains the rules.

"If you lose, you have to drink ideally in one, whatever is your preferred tipple. Good way of getting drunk quickly."

He chuckles.

Henri, Ian and Miranda stand watching Levon.

"Well Levon is our top player. If he can channel his aggression positively he is really good, strong and athletic. Good combination. But I have seen Sky beat him once or twice."

Emma

L:ooking over the list, Emma looks at Skye. "Hhmm Don't Go Breakin' My Heart? It's Raining Men? Or did any of the others catch your eye?" Em kept looking at the list, thinking about songs that would be a good dynamic. Or at the very least, fun. "I Feel Like a Woman?"

{Skye}

"Fuck, yeah!" She laughed and signaled Reg for another round to be waiting. "It's gotta be Shania to start. Let's get their attention." Clearly Skye was wanting to feel something.

"Oh. Did I see Jolene too?" The light wasn't the best - but it was clear that Skye blushed. "Oh, girl. We'ze gonna to line up quarters all night - as my dad says."

{OOC: sorry. minimum response. such a tough first week of new job - reminded that I can't solve everything at once. oh....Skye characteristic... LOL blush}

Henri

"Skye, beat Levon!" He is surprised and impressed with Skye. While she is taller than Levon by a bit, Henri would never have thought she could do that.

He adds with a humorous tone, "I guess I better not laugh if she botches up whatever song they pick for Karaoke, or I'll probably find myself knocked silly before I even know it."

Miranda grins.

"I doubt it. Skye has more discipline. I figure that works in her favour. Don't get me wrong, Levon beats everyone most of the time. I've never beaten him, he's too good."

She sips her drink.

Levon
"Sounds fair. Who's taking first crack at the American?" he says as he moves into position to wrestle.

A fairly tall lad, blonde with freckles, steps forward.

"I'll have a go as it's my turn. Name's Grant."

He smiles as takes his place opposite, arm on the table hand raised to clasp.

[OOC please describe how much effort Levon is making]

Skye and Emma can press to select their tune and start when ready.

Levon

He smiled back at Grant. "Nice to meet you," he said grasping the lad's hand "Levon's the name."

Levon braced himself and prepared to enter the contest with an intent to win. Losing was never an option. When the battle started, he would do his absolute best.

Henri

Looking towards the arm-wrestling competition, he will let out a cheer in support of Levon.

Grant takes Levon's hand, nods, and exerts pressure. Maybe Levon wasn't ready or the lad is stronger than he looks but Levon finds his arm flat on the table.

[OOC Sorry Neptune, rolled a double 1 ]

Emma

"Jolene... we definitely have to add some Dolly to the mix. Now, shall we go tell the boyos that they are going to be singing tonight as well?" Emma asked her friend, a jaunty smile in Skye's direction. Time to get the show started, and the fellas needed to participate.

Levon

"I suppose that I need a drink after that!"

He reaches out, shakes Grant's hand and does as required.

"We need to do this again because if I'm not engaged in this type of activity, the ladies I'm here with are going to force me to embarrass myself singing."

Grant grins.

"Yes, get yourself a drink and down in one. These guys, Steve and Pete, are still willing opponents."

The other two are smiling, Steve is a fairly burly guy, Pete is slim and wiry.

"So you go to Uni?"

On the stage selections are being made and a few people gather to watch in anticipation.

{Skye}

"We'll grab them on the third song." Skye took another shot, punched play, and grinned wickedly, pulling Em up on stage. She snapped her fingers in rhythm.

"Let's go girls..." she growled. "Come on."

I'm going out tonight, I'm feelin' alright
Gonna let it all hang out
Want to make some noise, really raise my voice
Yeah, I want to scream and shout, ah...

As the song went on, it was clear that Skye had emulated the video moves many times. And fortunately, she wasn't too bad especially when hiding under Em's voice. Though occasionally - she'd over emphasize a phrase or two with a bit of extra sass.

Henri

He sits back down to enjoy his drink too, while Levon has to down his drink after losing his first arm wrestling bout. His attention turns to the singers for the moment, and asks Miranda, "You said you sing in a choir. A church choir or something else?" He nods to the small stage. "You going to give it a try after them?"

She smiles.

"No, I sing in the Uni gospel choir. Love the music."

She sips her drink.

"I'd be happier singing with others, not used to performing on my own. Duet maybe?"

Henri

He grins back and says, "Sure, but I'll need another beer, I think."

Henri figures a little liquid courage will help him, and also offer a good excuse for his potentially bad singing.

Levon

"Yeah. We all met there. How about you chaps? First, who wants to embarrass me next?"

He sits at the ready for the next arm wrestling bout.

Steve and Pete exchange glances. Pete gestures to Steve to step forward.

Steve steps forward with a grin.

"Give it a try I guess."

He assumes the position.

[OOC Girls would you like to describe your performance?]

{OOC: I'll post by the end of the weekend, if Mina hasn't. Prefer to play off Em's responses. BTW for the record...vacations are lovely. ;)}

{Skye}

They'd sang through the first first and chorus. Skye was still leaning into it with abandon.

"The girls need a break-tonight we’re gonna take
The chance to get out on the town

We’re gonna let our hair hang down

Is the prerogative to have a little fun

She bumped Em's hip to urge the younger woman to take a bigger lead.

Levon
"Well then, let's give it a try."
He grasps Steve's hand for the wrestle.

Henri

Perhaps his cheering was a distraction in the last one, so seeing Levon setup for a second round Henri will hold any cheer until after Levon wins.

This one is an easy win for Levon.

"Guess you have the hang of it now."

Steve looks sheepish.

Henri

Seeing Levon win easily, he claps his hands and says, "Way to go, Levon!"

To Miranda he says, "I think I see why all of you like martial arts. It is not all about being tough. It is a discipline, and with it the will to succeed in anything you want to do."

Miranda

"Definitely a mind over matter thing. You need technique sure but you have to have the belief to apply it effectively."

She takes a sip of her drink.

"I got to know Levon and Skye through the sound studio, since I'm studying to be a sound engineer. I shared a couple of computer classes with Emma. Ian, I got to know through Levon and Skye."

"Uni is a great place for meeting people and for trying out new things. So what are your ambitions with sound? Want to work in a recording studio?"

She smiles, seeming quite relaxed.

"Oh, definitely. I grew up around a sound stage as my sister raised me when my father passed. As a kid I liked watching all the different switches and levels the engineers used when my sister was recording for various bands."

Memories flow across his mind, as he returns her smile with his and then takes a gulp of his beer. Sitting on a spinning stool in one studio when he was about nine years old, one nice technician even allowed him to flick a few buttons during sound checks but was never allowed to touch anything during an actual recording.
