Then if Nep lets us know what we have, we can decide how to distribute. | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,195 Likes: 9 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,195 Likes: 9 | Well, it takes a Short Rest's worth of time (for someone Skilled in Arcana) while carefully handling/examining an item to determine if it is magical or not and its general properties. Have all of the items:
Boots, Instrument, Dagger, Studded Leather, and Rapier
brought to Zhu's room at the inn. She will be spending a few days in a tub bathing so she will have plenty of time to examine them all.

Meta-gaming, those have all the smell of magic items placed into the treasure specifically for the party to have as a reward for the encounter. I would be against giving them up. ...and he is correct. Oh, and while we're at it, perhaps leveling up is in order? You'll all be 7th level by the time you move on. So go ahead, level up. If you need a hand, just PM me in your personal threads.

One thing I don't like in 5e is that the only way to gain a new skill is using "Downtime". You must spend a few months focused on learning the new thing. While that makes some sense from a realism point of view, we are playing a Fantasy game with magic. You get new spells and new abilities as you go up levels (without needing Downtime) under the 'assumption' that you have been studying all the while. I don't see why you can't be studying a new skill while you are adventuring and gain it when you level up?
In any case, the standard rules say only if you use Downtime.

Basically, your downtime and leveling up was spent between the Lost Mines of Phandelver module and the Storm King's Thunder. So, you're good to go until after 10th level. The translation, in non-mechanical terms is that your character has figured out how to use his training. As for Bern, he's not using the "standard" ranger because, as I've said previously, it SUCKS. You are using the Unearthed Arcana version of the Ranger. If I recall correctly, Bern elected the Hunter conclave, but I'm fine with you having fun with that document and rebuilding the character sheet.

Level up... heh ok, I have to remember to figure out those pieces. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,002 Likes: 1 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,002 Likes: 1 | They do but curing this affliction requires a 6th level spell, specifically “heal”. And by the way, curing disease is now a function of " Lay On Hands".

I have not forgotten. I have no idea how Arus's auras would look or feel in-continuity. He has an Aura of Protection and now an Aura of Menace. Aura of Protective Menace or Aura of Menacing Protection? Still, I think Arus the most formidable D&D character I've ever played. He's so self-contained. A triton conqueror paladin has it all! Superb crowd-control vs mooks and wreckers with his Conqueror powers Superb burst damage vs bosses with his Smites and extra attacks Versatile healing with his Lay on Hands Immune to disease, resistant to cold, breathes underwater and has darkvision Decent spell list Wears heavy armour Top-end Charisma and skills to act as party face As much as I loved Chandan, my human elemental monk, he had only one trick, Water Whip and it got nerfed by Wizards in the end too. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,067 Likes: 9 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,067 Likes: 9 | Well I had some time on my hands today so I converted Bern to a revised ranger. Bern of Trollbark ForestI called him that to distinguish him from the PHB version. I highlighted some of the pertinent combat powers that are a bit different from the PHB version. Primeval Awareness on p2 is also worth reading because it's much more potent than the PHB version. Finally I linked up the spells in the spell list to online descriptions so you can quickly read what they do. (I noticed Bern hadn't used any of his spells in the past.) I merged the Unearthed Arcana Revised Ranger PDF at the end for easy access. What do you think MikeD, Nep?

As to the spell thing ... there has not been a time that I recall when his 'spells' would be more helpful than his sword. I am sure that he would be using his healing in the 'recovery days' ... if they were helpful <g>

I tweaked your selection so there are spells that you can actively use in combat to big effect, like Hunter's Mark. https://www.dnd-spells.com/spell/hunters-markYou can cast it as a bonus action so it doesn't even cost you your attack. It's like a free extra 1d6 damage. Magic Weapon spell is useful because unless you have an actual magic weapon, if you encounter a monster that's immune to normal attacks then this spell is the only way you can inflict damage with your bow. It's also useful against monsters generally. https://www.dnd-spells.com/spell/magic-weaponYou can't run Hunter's Mark and Magic Weapon at the same time, alas, but they're tools in the arsenal. So yes, a revised ranger is a hell of a lot more potent than an original version ranger in every way. The thing I like more than the improved combat potency is the improved ranger-ness from Primeval Awareness. It means you're not limited to one terrain type and you truly are the bane of your favoured enemies. And note that orcs and goblinoids have been rolled into one favoured enemy "humanoid" that also includes humans, dwarves, elves, etc.. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,146 Likes: 5 Member | Member Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,146 Likes: 5 | <heh heh heh> Yeah ... like I said ... it'll take a bit for me to 'assimilate' it all. So don't hesitate to give me a nudge if you think I need one <wink>

Let's try this one... You were attacked by a monster. It's now your turn. You cast "Hunter's Mark" which is a bonus action. Now using your regular action you attack twice with your scimitar and once with your dagger adding 1d6 to every hit. So if you hit 3 times, that's an additional 3d6 damage. I can go through all your spells and tell you what I would do, but what fun would that be? HUNTER'S MARK 1st-leveI divination Casting Time: 1 bonus action Range: 90 feet Components: V Duration: Concentration, up to 1 hour Vouchoose a creature you can see within range and mystically mark it as your quarry. Until the spell ends, you deal an extra 1d6 damage to the target whenever you hit it with a weapon attack. and you have advantage on any Wisdom (Perception) or Wisdom (Survival) check you make to find it. lf the target drops to O hit points before this spell ends. you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to mark a new creature. At Higher Leveis. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 3rd or 4th leveI, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 8 hours. When you use a spell slot of 5th levei or higher, you can maintain your concentration on the spell for up to 24 hours. That's just one spell.
