I'm so tempted to do a DM pose of a fat red large elf sliding down the narrow passageway with a bag of gifts.

But I'll refrain.

Sorry about the delay guys. It's a busy week - all due to the move. I'll try to get to you soon.

Moving boxes take priority. Watch out for paper cuts and or being stuck in packing tape!

Yesterday was great! It was the first "trash day" following Christmas and it didn't rain. Everyone in the neighborhood that celebrated Christmas threw away the boxes that their gifts came in. I drove around town and saved myself about $50 that I would have needed to spend on boxes. I'm very proud of myself for dumpster-diving to save a few bucks after conducting 6-figure transactions these past few months. It seems like a trifle, but now that I'm living off a fixed income, every $50 I save means that I can play another round of golf later smile

My wife is starting to sell everything in the house on Facebook Marketplace and eBay. The décor of the new home is completely different from the one we're moving from so we decided to not bring any of the furniture. Why pay to move it? So armoires, desks, tables, sofas, etc. are starting to move. This is not happening at a pace that gives me much of a break. Every time I seem to sit down to compose a post, my wife says something akin to "Someone's coming for the dresser. We have to empty it now!" That phase becomes a signal for me to crate up the contents. That leads to wrapping and stowing.

Redirecting this response here rather than the game thread, because it's pushed my buttons and I can't not reply to this. Whether this reply is helpful or not can be discussed later, but I just wanted to offer some points from my relatively newbish perspective based on very little actual experience with this specific system but many years of experience in general story/plot/RP/keeping-players-happy.

1. I have joined into this game wanting to help, but the frequent "rules lawyering" is actually starting to scare me away. I completely respect your experience with this specific system and know that technically you'd probably be right in the overwhelming majority of disagreements. While Nep has the experience and backbone to shut this stuff down, I know with my limited experience in the 5e system I would not want to face these types of challenges from a player. I'm hoping to try to run the next major campaign in this overall scenario and I don't want to deal with challenges like this. The whole point of this game is collaborative, not competitive. Please consider this a personal request to not challenge me in the same way you're challenging Nep.

2. I know enough of the behind-the-scenes of this scenario to know that if this was run 100% by-the-book the whole party would die. Swiftly. You might already be dead. There are specific "hold back" types of actions happening behind the scenes to try to achieve a delicate balance. Nep and I have discussed what will happen and we each have our own opinions, but I actually agree with him on this and actually proposed a more strict enforcement of "book rules" on the descent than the one he has proposed. Be happy you're dealing with him and not me.

3. Related to #2 above: I'm going to be trying to run the next major campaign, and if a similar "run it by the book" challenge is made, you can expect full "by the book" consequences without any DM intervention to try to, you know, keep the party alive and enjoying the storyline. May the odds be ever in your favor if you choose that route.

TLDR: Please trust your DMs, or DM your own game.

Aqua,
No need to intervene between me and Zeim. This debate has ensued for over 4 decades between us. And please don't ruin my hard-earned designation as an evil DM by letting them know how much of a softie I really am smile

Be aware, Aqua, I would never challenge you the way I challenge Nep. As he said, we've had this same discussion (in different variations) since the 1970's.

Both are correct. We started playing around 1977. 2022-1977 = 45 years or 4 1/2 decades.

But we've played in the 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's, 10's and 20's. In 6 decades.

...and here's the initiation of our arguing over rules (and the start of Neptune's reputation as "Evil DM").

Nep was our first DM. My first pc was a 1st level Elven Wizard. We were playing using the original Chainmail set of rules in 1977 as well as added info from Dragon Magazine. We were walking thru a dungeon and my Wizard opened a random door to reveal a 10x10 room with no windows and no other exits. Inside was a Glass Goblin, sitting in a chair (don't even know that such a creature still exists).

As soon as the door opened the Goblin smashed a Fireball globe into the floor which exploded, filled the room with flames, which also spilled out into the hallway, frying my Wizard to a crisp. The Fireball also fried the Goblin, who committed suicide to kill my Wizard.

We argued about the logic of that back in 1977 and have been continuing those 'discussions' ever since. smile

OK so for the record:

1. I understand this whole thing goes back before I ever even played and that was a long-ass time ago.

2. So it's all in good fun.

3. I'm still going to do my best to kill Zeim's character, just because. grin

Everyone does.....That's why I need to be a rules expert....... wink

Not to mention that until RL issues came along I had been Co-DMing this game with Neptune so we had these kinds of discussions all the time.

Rules are meant to facilitate the fun. How that happens and to what extent is very different for each group down to each player.

I joined this set of games to get a feel for 5e. I have played since the chain mail days and the land of 3 brown books. I might even have my first 3 brown ratty brown books. For me this journey started in 1976. I still play an active Adnd game because the GM said and I quote "I am too lazy to learn newer editions." grin

If you glance and games I run you can see that my games the rules take a big back seat to story but that works for the stories I try to tell. Each to their own including long standing arguments just because they are fun too.

Oh and to be clear I am not trying to kill your character in my game. At least not yet. blaze

Yup!! <g> And I agree that ... in the games that are the most fun to play ... the 'rules' are not the 'focus' ... they are they to help <g>
