<Bern>

He smiled as the last of the group was aboard without problem.

He nodded. "It would also give a chance to learn more of this place", he said.

Those on shore watch as the Grand Dame sets off. The lights from the ship make it easy to watch. Nobody seems to notice or care that they are on the pier or what they are doing. Absolutely nothing happens between the time that the ship sets off and the time that it returns in the wee hours of the morning. It is simply quiet, pleasant evening.

[OOC I assume that is Kriv & Zhu? Jaliera was just looking in. ]

Jaliera

Too crowded for her, she backs out and heads for the casino leaving Kriv and Zhu to talk to the other patrons. Heading into the casino, she decides to wander around the tables and try to work out how to play these games. Of course this gives her every opportunity to eavesdrop. She does not plan on lingering unless something catches her interest.

Kriv

The Dragonborn noble comported himself as the rules of civility and gentility required, keeping eyes and ears open, acknowledging those with whom they shared the table. If they offered small talk, they would not be rebuffed for doing so.

OOC: It was Kriv and Jaliera. The entrances are at opposite ends of the boat. The waiter, aka maitre'd, is standing at the doorway. Because of tight seating, merely poking one's head in is enough to require him to seat her. But I was rushed when I posted and inadvertently left off Zhu, so Jaliera's in the clear smile Yeah, make it Zhu.

Arus

"Target sighted." He says in a low voice to Sindar next to him, trusting that the other man has also spotted the lady in the purple dress.

Arus looks around, putting the gamning table into context in an attempt to identify the game. If he knows the game, he can play it.

"I think this is one mystery we need to uncover, Sindar."

[Does Arus recognise the game? Any rough analogues irl?]

OOC: Here's a picture of the casino and restaurant. I placed the 5 PCs that are there in it and omitted all other folks. It's pretty crowded. This gives you and idea of where you are but unless you're looking to turn to violence, it's just a visual aid..

As for games, there are a number of them going on. I'm preparing a game card but until that is done....

DM
Arus can see the game she is playing. It looks like a strategy game. There are a number of figurines. As he approaches he can see that they are all black elves. One set has gold trim, the other silver. The two players are moving pieces around the board. "She's an excellent Sava player," an observer says to a friend nearby. "Yes, but Lord Hubert is relentless!" his friend responds.

OOC: For this one game, Arus, who is a gambler, gets to roll a DC 10 Intelligence roll to see if he knew the game.

Sindar

"Indeed," he answers the comment.

He is willing to observe the lady and the game from a good distance, so as to not intrude. Though he is listening to other discussions around him. Mostly he wants to get a feel for the crowd and the room. It will take time for the liquor and wine to have the desired effect on the patrons and to make it easier to gather information. For that, he is willing to be patient.

She makes her way along the deck and heads for the gaming room. She will pause to observe the first table in operation and see what might be said of interest.

On the pier (Bern, Davroar and Zindra)
Selûne comes out to greet the trio and illuminate the river as the Grand Dame turns upstream. Oars come out as this is the path of resistance to the flow. The boat becomes smaller as moves away towards the horizon. Zindra turns to Davroar and Bern and says "We need to be here when they return, but I share your concern so maybe we follow up the shore as well as we can and try to keep the lights from the ship in our view? We're all good out in the wilderness. I wish we thought about getting horses earlier."

In the dining hall (Kriv and Zhu)
Zhu and Kriv take seats. The couple they are seated with smile towards them. The man says, "Well met strangers. I am Lord Festus and this Lady Festus." The woman elbows her husband and whispers in his ear. He smiles and says to her, "I do not think so, my dear."

In the casino (Arus, Jaliera and Sindar)
Looking about, the three find placards that explains many of the games, how wagering works and the rules.

Kobold Knuckles
Participants: Up to 4 vs the House
Minimum Buy-in:1 GP Payout: 1 GP

After all players have rolled their d4, the dealer reveals the hidden d4 and rolls additional d4’s until they have at least 8 or higher. If the result exceeds 10, all players still in the game win 100% of their bet. When the dealer is finished rolling, any players with a result lower than the dealer’s lose their bets, players with the same total as the dealer reclaim their bets, and players with a result higher than the dealer’s win 100% of their bets."

Sava
Participants: Up to 4 vs the House
Minimum Buy-in:10 GP Payout: 8 GP
Rules: A strategic board game of strategy. A game of Sava takes roughly 30 minutes.

OOC 1 - about Sava: This odd version of chess is a drow invention. Two players play against each other using ebony pieces resembling drow warriors, mages and priestesses. The goal of the game is to destroy the other player’s ‘noble house’. It is a game of skill, deception and insight.
A game of sava takes roughly 30 minutes. Each player makes a bet before the game begins (the minimum bet is 5 golden geese). To determine who wins the game, each participant makes three rolls:
-An Intelligence (Sava) check.
-A Wisdom (Insight) check.
-A Charisma (Deception) check.
Compare the combined totals of these three rolls to determine the winner of the game (on an equal result, the game is a draw). The winner claims 80% of the total waged. The house takes 20%.

OOC 2 - about payouts. Payouts include the wager. So if you bet 5 GP and the payout is 8 GP, you won 3 GP.

OOC 3 - Some games are played with cards but since we use dice, everything is translated to dice.

OOC 4 - Except for Sava, we will play just a handful of games. I'll come up with a general roll for the entire night of activity. For now, just enjoy the games and see what else you can accomplish to further your mission.

He watched as the ship began it's journey. "I don't think we will need horses to keep up", he said to Zindra with a grin. "Shall we", he asked, his hand indicating the departing ship.

"It's night. I can see in the dark thanks to my father's blood. How will you? Davroar, do you agree with trying to follow on foot?"

OOC: As I said in the OOC thread, the ship will be out there for 6 hours.

She nods her head politely. "Well met. I am Zhuirentel Elendaril and my companion is Lord Kriv Norixius, of Norixius Keep."

She raises an eyebrow as the Lady whispers to her husband. "Yes?" She inquires simply of the man.

As my OOC statement says, it depends on your rolls. Gypsy may not want to dig into her pockets, but Jaliera may not have the willpower. Virtually all people walking into a casino with a stated limit but somehow walk out losing double or triple.

Jaliera's stake is set at 10 gp. Pick your game.

The elderly man frowns, a bit worried about offending, when Zhu queried him about his wife's question. "Lady Festus wondered if you were a couple. I told her no. That might be presumptuous, I do not really know much about these things other than that here, in Yartar, things are done which are not done most other places in the realms. 'Tis none of our business."

Kriv notes that the other guests here on the ship all appear to be nobility or the 'new rich', wealthy merchants and the like.

What was it with these damn mammals and their obsession with pair-bonding? Drily, Kriv replied,

"I can confirm we are not in any way a 'couple'."

[Arus rolls 15 total on his Int check to recognise Sava. I'm guessing that's a moderate success.]

Arus

Sava. Arus might have plenty of time to observe; the games can run for hours. Presumably the casino will have speed play rules in effect.

Arus splits from Sindar and heads for Lady Atalia's table, noting where his bard friend stations himself in case things get the wrong kind of dicy.

Taking a seat, Arus nods to the two players, reserving a much warmer smile for the lady in the purple dress.

When there's a break in the game, or it concludes, Arus catches Lady Atalia's eye.

"You seem to have the measure of Lord Hubert. Do you play against many lords?"

The white-haired noble pushes a stack of golden goose coins across the table and rises from his plush seat. “I don’t know how you do it, Lady Atalia. You seem to know my every move, before I know it myself. Thank you for the game,” he says graciously, before bending down and kissing the woman’s extended hand. “Now I think I must find another table, lest I squander all the coin I’ve spent a lifetime acquiring.” The young woman smiles warmly at the older man. “You do that, Lord Hubert. Until next time.”

She turns to Arus and says, "It seems that you are next. I can see that you know the game. I look for a challenge, be it from a noble, a lord or just any smart person. You have me at a disadvantage, who do I have the privilege of playing with. I think that I've seen someone that looks like you around town before. You are difficult to miss. Shall we play for 10 gold to start?"

A small crowd starts to gather around the pair now. Arus would lose face if he were to stand up now and would likely lose a great opportunity to talk get information from her. At least she offered to play for the minumum.

OOC: That roll means that you won't be at disadvantage in the game.

She smiles softly, nodding agreement with Kriv. "No, we are not. We are merely traveling together, passing thru your fine City, and decided to pause for some entertainment."

She looks around. "As strangers here, perhaps you might enlighten us while we dine with some local history or tips we might benefit from while here?"

Davroar

He shrugs his shoulders and says to Bern and Zindra, "I've nothing better to do than walk along I guess."

The size of the ship and the lights on it should make it easy enough to follow. Walking along the banks of the river at night might be problematic for himself and Bern without some light though. Davroar figures he could always shape change into a creature with better night vision if he really needs to.

"Good point, Zindra. It's going to get darker once we're outside the city limits. You sure you want to go all the way Bern?"

Davroar is equally inclined just to head back to the inn and sip away a few ales, then come back a few hours later to wait for the ship to dock.

As she wanders around, she watches people indulging in these games of chance. To her it is like throwing money away. Generally you are going to lose as the House makes money. It's a mugs game. She will need to try a game or two here and there as part of the background. She decides to try Kobold's Knuckles first. She plays 1gp and makes her roll.

She rolls the first two dice - 2 and 1. So she rolls the d4 again - 3. And again 4

That's 10! She sticks.

"While I might not be able to see as well as you, Davroar. but I can get around well enough", he said with a shrug.
