So Nem asked a great question, how much money do I have?

He started at this level (6) and the DMG has a default start table for higher level PCs. For PC's level 5-10 the starting wealth above starting gear is 500 gp plus ldl0 x 25 gold which is 525-750 GP. Nobody in this party has that much, but you should smile You own a mine and just delivered goods.

Of course, with that, you had to buy equipment and you've been paying for things. I know you've all been ultra thrifty. And hey, maybe you'll want to some more shopping. So it's Christmas in May.

I didn't do it earlier, but let's just say that the party was paid by Gundren and the caravan merchants a tidy sum of 300 gold EACH to guard it. Truth is, some of you, Bern, Jaliera, Davroar and Kriv are actually very wealthy now. You might be playing the miser but you ain't. But you travel light. And you entrusted Luminmorn and Ryssa with your accounting and with the rebuilt manor, which could be your home if you ever decide to settle down in Phandelin. But you would have taken some gold, which is what you left there with.

So add 300 GP to your gold. That's done in Roll20. I'll start some sort of accounting thread to keep this cleaner and I'll take the time to get to a comfortable number to go forward with. I'll come up with something for Arus, Sindar and Zhu shortly, but don't feel too poor.

It seems that we, collectively, have been selling Kriv short. There is a tool proficiency which is a part of the Noble background, which so far over the course of both games has been overlooked, and indeed, was an irrelevance.

Until now.

'Tis not the DM's job to point these things out, so I shall let you pick your set. But since the rules I put together actually call for you to use them, duh! I'm going to make it even more generic so if you have any gaming tool kit proficiency, it'll work here.

This is a good place for me to invent my gambling rules.

Stake We start with your initial money. Kriv exchanged 150 GP and the rest of you 100 GP. A lot of these bets are 1 GP but alot of the games last a minute or less. The dealers know that the faster they deal, the greater the casino earnings so they are skilled at making that happen. The ship will operate for five hours before docking. There's no way we play 500 games!

Xanthar's guide to everything has some rules around which I will homebrew what we'll do. Their rule was more one-on-one than vs the casino. We have to augment those rules.

Time The cruise is out for 6 hours. We will work with a turn, aka one set of rolls, being 1 hour at a time. Dinner is an hour and I expect each of you to eat. It's expected. Dinner is 2 GP. That means 5 hours of gambling. You are expected to play. If you play one hour, you're in good graces with management.

Skill checks

Your character will make a series of checks, with a DC determined at random every turn (if one-on-one, it's also based on the quality of the competition that your character runs into). Your character makes four checks: Intelligence, Charisma and two Wisdom rolls. If your character has the gaming toolset, add your proficieny total to each except for the last one

First there's intelligence. What moron playing blackjack hits on a 17? True story. In AC on a Friday night. Some guy who was there attending a bachelor party was at a table I was considering joining. He was sitting in the anchor seat. I watch 4 or 5 hands before ever sitting at a table, both to observe the other players and to count cards. The deck wasn't in my favor so I hadn't sat down yet when a broad-chested thuggish guy wearing a gold necklace that could be used as a dog chain, came and sat down at the table. His drunken posse was with him as he slapped $500 worth of chips down. The hand was dealt and the tipsy bachelor party guy hit on a 17 with the dealer showing a 5. He busted when the dealer dealt him a Jack and lost his $10 but then the dealer flipped his cards, revealing a King underneath and promptly drew a 6 and took the $500 from the hulking thug. Security had to get involved but fortunately for the moron that hit on a 17 they were right there. Anyhow, the point is intelligence matters. Forget the idiot that hit on a 17. The thug was stupid for just throwing his money down on a table which he didn't study. I would NEVER sit at a table with the idiot sitting in the anchor seat. The brutish thug deserved to lose his $500.

Roll a 1d20 intelligence check. Add your intelligence modifier to your roll. If you have the toolset proficiency add your proficiency bonus. DC is 2d10+5 which I roll in opposition.

Gambling also requires charisma in games against other opponents. Being able to bluff and keep a straight face are keys to that sort of game. It also helps you influence the actions of others. If you have a good charisma, you're likely to spend time wagering in games that use it rather than pure luck games.

Roll a 1d20 charisma check. If you have intimidation, deception or persuasion skills, roll those skills. If you have the toolset proficiency add your proficiency bonus. DC is 2d10+5 which I roll in opposition.

Wisdom helps you read an opponent, figure out their tells, sneak peeks behind their cards and notice those who're cheating.

Roll a 1d20 wisdom check. If you have perception or insight skills, roll those. If you have the toolset proficiency add your proficiency bonus. DC is 2d10+5 which I roll in opposition.

But wisdom is also about will. Gambling is addictive. Lack of will power is what drains people's pockets. The first rule of gambling is to "quit while you're ahead". Sure, in your mind you're smarter than everyone else and have great self control. My key to winning is to get up when I'm up 25%. Typically I start with $400. Sometimes my night ends after 10 minutes if I get on an early run. If I've made $100 in ten minutes, it's time to go get a really nice dinner with the winnings. Not many can resist the urge to keep playing. Many can't resist the urge to dig deep into their pockets. Wisdom might be the most dangerous roll. It's where you the player says "I'm not risking more than 100 GP" but where I, the DM might say, "The dice tell a different story". You're all going to roll because your in that ultra-tempting environment.

Roll a SECOND 1d20 wisdom check. If you have the toolset, you may NOT use it here. DC is 2d10+5 which I roll in opposition.

If you FAIL the 2nd wisdom roll, you are FORCED into another hour of gaming. If you succeed, you have the option to stop playing for the night.

Gambling Results
0 successes you lose your entire stake. Since you failed your wisdom roll, you MUST dig into your pocket for the next turn in an amount equal to your stake. The ship will let you owe them.
1 success You lose half your stake.
2 successes: You break even.
3 successes: You win half of your stake.
4 successes: You win double your stake.

But to start the night, you should all pick one game and we'll have some fun with that, just to roleplay it out a bit.

It's almost that time again, almost a year later, to play in real time. Summer may not be a great time but I would like to offer up Saturday June 26th or Sunday June 27th. I would propose the following times but we have some flexibility:
  • Great Brittan - 6:00 pm BST Supper
  • New York/Indiana - 1:00 pm EDT Lunch
  • Portland Oregon - 10:00 am PDT Brunch
Time zone converter
Please respond letting me know if either of those two days work or don't. If we could get everyone together then, it might be fun. I estimate the session would only be 3-4 hours but it would be nice to do again. I would only do this if everyone was participating. It's fine to run that next part here in the forum too but it'll take a month to do.

We would use Roll20, of course, and Discord or Zoom if someone has an account (I no longer do).

I have a Zoom account but have no weekends free until mid Aug. Full to the brim with guests and gaming! grin It is possible that we could use our FTF SW Zoom account if our host is happy, Neil could sort that! smile

Hey Mike, you had trouble last time. I realllllly wouldn't want to do this missing anyone. I wouldn't mind doing a setup test with you before the game.
