DM This large workshop was badly damaged by the ancient spell battle that laid waste to the mine. Worktables taking up two corners of the room aer scorched, and the plaster has been burned off the masonry walls. In the middle of the room, a stone pedestal holds a small brazier in which an eerie green flame dances and crackles. The brazier and its pedestal appear to have been untouched by the forces that destroyed this area.
Behind the brazier of green flame floats a spherical creature measuring roughly four feet in diameter. Four eyestalks protrude from its central mass, two on each side. In the center of the body is a large eye that stares at you.
"Hello," says a thick, burbling voice inside your head.
Apparently a possible alternate, stealthy entry was no longer a consideration. There was =some= basis for not worrying. They =had= just been in a very loud battle. He shrugged and went back to watching for threats from elsewhere.
Momentarily nonplussed, Kriv's noble etiquette kicked in, as he tucked the crowbar away and swept into an elegant courtly bow to the strange but apparently not immediately aggressive entity.
"Greetings. I hight Kriv Norixius, of Norixius Keep. By what name should we know you? I beg your pardon for the hesitation, but the state of the door indicated it was unlikely this chamber was occupied. Have you been here long?"
Reptilian eyes took in a multitude of strange equivalents, as he rifled through the memory of his studies to see if he could recall a being such as this.
For some creatures the concept of names and time are nonsensical. What might be perceived as encouraging is the fact that the creature responded. "Not finished" is how it replies.
His first impulse ... when he hears Kriv talking ... apparently to someone or something inside the building ... was to move to support him. But it did =not= sound like hostilities were imminent, and he had no reason to believe that the conversation lessened the possibility that something =else= might 'show up'. so he decided to continue watching their backside ... for now.
That doesn't sound good. Guarding will often result in attacking if the creature perceives them to be a threat. They are here to find a dwarf though. Maybe it knows something and asking might lower the perceived threat? She does not want to cut into Kriv's conversation though so she suggests it to him.
"Perhaps you could ask it if it knows the location of the dwarf we are searching for?"
OOC: Before you do anything, please place yourselves in the room or not. Only those in the room can talk to the monster. I outlined an area in the map in red that you should place yourselves. These are areas that are non-threatening.
Understand that unless you are IN the chamber, the creature will not converse with you. You will not be allowed to engage it physically for at least a full round. In fact, with nobody in the room, it would not have spoken so it has stopped. In effect, you are not in any type of encounter, social or combat, at this time.
DM "When my assignment ends" is the vague but accurate answer given.
OOC: Just to be clear, as a DM, I do not like feeding you the answers in situations like this. If you come up with the right answer, It'll be validated but it won't be fed as an answer to a broad question.
