Remember also that you can split your move. She can easily move to where she can see the bugbears and then retreat back and hide.
Neil, since Davroar has a 16 initiative and is healing Chandan, there's no need for that death save. Chandan will be alive but prone:
- A prone creature’s only Movement option is to crawl, unless it stands up and thereby ends the condition.
- The creature has disadvantage on Attack rolls.
- An Attack roll against the creature has advantage if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature. Otherwise, the Attack roll has disadvantage.
Since you had a low initiative, you'll get to go in Round #1!

If the party is lucky enough to kill the two bugbears up front, Chandan goes before the other bugbears go. That means he can stand and move away, behind allies, to stay "safe". Not that he's going to do that. He's probably going to punch away, but I wanted to throw that out there for you. | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 46,267 Member | Member Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 46,267 | [OOC: I'm a little confused here. Apparently unconcerned for her own safety, Ryssa rushed forward to the old monk, kneeled on the dusty floor at his side and quickly checked his wounds.
Closing her eyes briefly, she waved an open palm over Chandan's injuries and murmured a prayer of healing to Lathander, putting extra emphasis on the request. A glow of soft, green light appeared over the wounds and they began to close and heal.

It blinds one of them in the front ranks Bugbear 2 is blinded. A blinded creature can’t see and automatically fails any ability check that requires sight. Attack rolls against the creature have advantage, and the creature’s Attack rolls have disadvantage.
Ryssa rushes over to Chandan's side and healing power flows from her into the monk. His eyes open suddenly and he takes a breath, now partially healed from the javelin wound. She is joined by Davroar who also provides healing. The monk is now in much better condition to take care of the sneaky bugbears.
OOC: Luminmorn is up. I'll update this post later with the status.

First, I think that you mean Bugbear 2. You can't hit B3 with a melee attack. He's in the second row.
Here are the rules:
Shield master PHB p171 If you take the Attack action on your turn, you can use a bonus action to try to shove a creature within 5 feet of you with your shield.
SHOVING A CREATURE PHB p196 - Using the Attack action, you can make a special melee attack to shove a creature, either to knock it prone or push it away from you. If you're able to make multiple attacks with the Attack action, this attack replaces one of them. The target of your shove must bc no more than one size larger than you, and it must be within your reach.
You make a Strength (Athletics) check contested by the target's Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check (the target chooses the ability to use). If you win the contest, you either knock the target prone or push it 5 feet away from you.
Since the bugbears are all bunched up, you really can't push the bugbear away. That forced you to try and knock him prone - a desirable action anyway. So, make your Athletics check (1d20+5). I'll roll for the bugbear...

He gasps as if awaking from a nightmare and instinctively kips onto his feet. Bloody stirges!! But then he sees the bugbears and realises he might have a lapse in memory.
With the corridor thronged, Luminorm by his side, Chandan quickly decides to bottleneck the bugbear's further. As ferocious as the goblinoids are, the monk knows his companions are far more versatile and inventive.
He leaps at the one in front of him, sinking his hands into its fur.
[Attempt 1st Grapple on Bugbear1, opposed roll, Chandan's total is 4. If successful, he will attempt 2nd Grapple on Bugbear2 also. If 1st Grapple is unsuccessful, he will attempt 2nd Grapple on Bugbear1. 2nd Grapple, opposed roll, Chandan's total is 18.]

His first attempt to grab it fails as his hands were greasy with his own blood but after wiping them on the humanoid's fur, he is able to grasp that lout. Unfortunately, aside from the bugbear that is grappled, two other bugbears have no other reasonable target aside from him. While two of the bugbears fail to hit him (including the one he's grappling), the third smashed his morningstar into the monk's side 10 pts damage. The two bugbears in the back rank hurl their javelins at the healers. The javelin thrown at Davroar missed badly and the one aimed at Ryssa ricochets off her shield. I really dislike grapple as an action as a player. The benefit of stopping movement is trivial. Where was the bugbear going anyway? I would have taken an attack and tried to kill it instead. Also, with my FTF crew I would have probably insisted on the attacks against Chandan to be with advantage since he no longer would have the freedom to defend himself as well as if he were not in an grapple embrace, but I'll cut you some slack here and not do that. Zeim, you can tell our FTF pals how I'm losing my evil DM luster now
GRAPPLED A grappled creature's speed becomes O,and it can't benefit from any bonus to its speed. The condition ends if the grappler is incapacitated (see the condition), The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creature fram the reach of the grappler or grappling effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the thunderwave spell.
I'm also assuming that Ryssa is using her shield. Otherwise the attack on her is a hit.
Kriv is up and then we're back to the top of the order and all of you will go in turn.

The only benefit it has is to stop movement, and you give up your attack to do so. Almost every time that is not a good trade. The only case I can see for using it is if you are trying to stop someone from fleeing OR you enemy has some special ability that is based on its movement, such as a creature that can fly and attack from the air.) | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,229 Likes: 10 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,229 Likes: 10 | [I think grappling is better vs a single foe rather than a group, and better still if you have high Str, for sure. But in this case, I was hoping to waste their attacks. If Chandan had successfully grappled on the 1st attempt, he could have still attacked Bugbear1 for damage (and again with his bonus action iirc). To break the grapple will use Bugbear1's action iirc, and if it doesn't break free, Chandan can still hit it next turn. I was hoping the bugbear's ranged attacks would target Chandan, so he could use the grappled bugbear as cover. Afaik, in 5e the grappler is only limited in movement, they get no further penalties, move at half speed, and only the grappled foe has the Grappled condition. Bugbear 2 and 3 attacking Chandan isn't so bad. He has a decent AC and healing one character is more optimal than healing many. In the next round, Chandan could try grappling Bugbear 3 too! Or he could attack Bugbear1 thrice, or he could attempt to shove Bugbear1, knock it prone, drag it back so everyone can attack it with advantage, and still attack it twice (with advantage). It would all be a more reliable tactic if Chandan was a burly half-orc barbarian.] | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,529 Likes: 7 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,529 Likes: 7 | OOC: I would have to think long and hard to allow Chandan to grapple more than one bugbear. In keeping with with my less-than-evil DM approach this week, I'll let you try that tactic if you so desire but I will start dolling out benefits to them. They would definitely have advantage in striking you.
However, I see the cinematic side of this too, where Chandan has two bugbear heads tucked under his arms and he scissors a third. I'm just not sure that that's a 5th level maneuver
You are right about the movement, but consider that your only benefit is that you are stopping the bugbear. It doesn't roll with disadvantage and you cut your own speed in half. Tactically, the bugbear wasn't going to move anyway, so the net negative effect on the bugbear is actually nil but you are hindered. | | | | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 46,267 Member | Member Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 46,267 | Ryssa
Chandan was injured again, but not nearly so drastically as before, so Ryssa, not wanting to give up the protection of her shield against the bugbears' javelins, murmured a prayer to Lathander and then pointed at the closest enemy.
