Everyone had given their thoughts except for the mage and, her hand on the handle to the door, Ryssa glanced back at Balthazar to see if he had anything to offer.
Luminmorn opens the door and charges in, followed by Bern. The others wait behind to enter.
This long room is partitioned into three areas, with iron bars walling off the north and south. Filthy straw lines the floors of those cells, the hinged doors of which are secured by chains and padlocks. A pair of disheveled human females, a woman and girl, are held in the cell to the south, while a human boy is confined to the north. All are dressed in plain gray tunics and have iron collars fitted around their necks. A heap of discarded clothing is piled carelessly against the far wall.
As Luminmorn and Bern charge into the room they immediately see two Redbrands with swords standing across the room and they close with them. From the corner of their eyes they can see two more Redbrands trying to hide against the wall.
Three of the Redbrands strike first, each one strikes twice with their swords. The two Redbrands adjacent to the door strike at Bern while the one against the far wall meets Luminmorn's rush with two attacks.
Of the four strikes against Bern, 3 hit. The swords slice into the Ranger's body almost simultaneously, staggering him (15 points). Blood flows down his legs.
Luminmorn is luckier, with both strikes of Redbrand 3 missing him.
Ryssa goes now, followed by Redbrand 4 and then Bern.
Seeing how seriously Bern was injured, Ryssa eased alongside Lingo, clasped her left hand around her icon of Lathander and murmured a healing spell as she reached out to touch the ranger.
[[ By my reckoning: after healing on 6/19, Bern was only down 4, so the new damage would take him to 19 not 27. With Ryssa's healing, his current damage should be 9. Lemme know if you disagree on that. ]]
(OOC - Could be. Let me check...... OK, it seems I added 10 points of damage at one point instead of healing Bern for 10. I then corrected it by removing the 10 I added but I never gave him credit for the 10. Anyway, by my calculations he was at 2 points of damage instead of 12 when he just took the 15, so he should now be at 17 down. I corrected the post above. Apologies.)
Ryssa steps up and casts a healing spell in Bern, reducing the damage he just took significantly.
Redbrand #4, the one who fled from the room before, now goes. Emboldened by being with 3 of his fellows he strikes out at Luminmorn. Both of his attacks are well struck, and while his sword slices Luminmorn once, he is a bit concerned as the attack he missed with was good enough to hit most opponents he's faced before (Luminmorn takes 5 points).
He grunted at the offending Redband. With a small nod he acknowledged the well struck blow. Then in turn about is fair play, the dragonborn brought his weapon across his body to strike at the man. He grunts again when it hits home.
24 to hit, 10 dmg Luminmorn Attack Redband Pandemonium rolled d20+6,1d10+4 and got 24, 10

(OOC - In 5e your own party members do not impede LOS. So in this case, as odd as it might seem, Balthazar can fire through 4 other party members with no issues and attack R3.)
The party strikes back against the Ruffians in the room. Luminmorn, Bern, and Lingo hit while Balthazar's Firebolt flies wide.
The Redbrands now strike back (we're back at the top of the order). Redbrand 1 and 2 attack Bern while #3 attacks Luminmorn. Two of the 4 strikes on Bern are hits and both strikes on Luminmorn hit. Luminmorn and Bern take 10 points of damage.
Redbrand Attack - B, B, L Zeim rolled d20+4,d20+4,d20+4,d20+4,d20+4,d20+4 and got 15, 12, 12, 16, 17, 17
Ryssa is up followed by Redbrand #4. (Note: I inadvertently rolled for Redbrand #4 before his turn. Both of those attacks on Luminmorn missed. So while it is not R4's turn, when he goes he will miss twice. So, after Ryssa, everyone else can go without waiting for R4.)
[[ regardless of what Ryssa does ... unless it is to kill R1, in which case I will miss R2 instead <chuckle> ]]
<Bern>
They seemed to be doing a much better job then he was, but stopping wasn't really an option at this point. He had damaged the fellow on his left, so he decided to continue against him ...
Bern Continue on R1 MikeD rolled d20+5,d8+3 and got 12, 9
With none of the Redbrands within melee range of her, the cleric drew and nocked an arrow, then aimed and fired at the opponent at the far end of the room in front of Luminmorn. She cursed under her breath as she missed.
The group continues to fight against the Redbrands while the captives huddle in their cells.
Ryssa, Balthazar, and Bern's attacks all miss while Luminmorn and Lingo both hit their targets.
Seeing half their number drop suddenly, the other two remaining Redbrands drop their weapons and hold their hands up in surrender.
The prisoners perk up at the sight of their jailers surrendering. The two women stand quietly, still sniffling, but the boy in the Northern cell rushes to the bars and points an accusing finger at the ruffians.
"I don't know", the smaller of the two prisoners says. "He told us to wait here and kill intruders if they came in."
"If he didn't run off, he prob'ly went to his room to protect his silly experiments and get his pet Bugbears to protect him." The bigger one chimes in.
