Bern, listens at the eastern door (make a Perception roll MikeD), Lingo has been gathering up the bottles that are worth any money, and Balthazar had been reading the tomes when Ryssa's conversation with Droop registers to him.
He casts a Bolt of Fire at the rat who scurries underneath a workbench. The Firebolt misses the rat, and it scurries deeper into the legs of the benches and tables (additional attacks against the rat will be at disadvantage due to cover).
Either someone was leaving the 'room' on the other side ... or they were coming toward them. He took a moment to signal his companions ... pointing to his ears, then to the door and finally his finger to his lips to signal quiet. Then he went back to listening. He was straining for the sounds of footsteps in case that door signaled a person was headed =towards= them. As he listened, he shifted his weight. He readied himself to surprise whoever was on the other side as soon as the latch was lifted ...
Bern hears no more noise from the other side of the door, which opens into the room beyond the one the party is in (IOW "out"). Either whoever is/was there has left, stopped moving completely, or is able to be very quiet.
Without anything more to go on, he will assume that the person on the other side is being quiet. He remains ready to shove the door if he hears/feels the latch move.
"Shouldn't we hunt him down and kill his familiar before he has a chance to reorganize?" He didn't want to run headlong into an ambush, but staying there wasn't a good plan either. "Or do we head out and come back later? He will expect us and be more prepared but so will we."
Her arrow nocked and the bowstring pulled back almost to her ear, the cleric squatted on her haunches and duck-walked as she looked under the tables and benches, firing her arrow if she happened to spot the rat.
[[ well last I heard, there were several folks 'ransacking' this room. Maybe they will be getting back to that now that the big dangerous rat is dead <weg> ]]
