"Shhh..." she cautioned the goblin who had apparently attached himself to her.

"The rat will not hurt you. Who is Glassy?"

Droop looks at you confused. "Teld you 'afore. Glasstick." He looks across at Luminmorn. "Dragon man said he knew 'im."

His eyes watch the rat as it scurries into a corner of the room.

She glanced at the dragonborn and then back to Droop.

"Why does the rat frighten you?"

He turns to Ryssa and puts a finger to his lips. "Shhhhh! Ratsy knows what you're saying. He tell Glassy."

An incredulous look on her face, she looked from Droop to where the rat had been and then back to the goblin.

"You mean he..." she lowered her voice nearly to a whisper, "he can talk to rats?"

Balthazar

"No, he means familiar!" he said, pointing a finger at the rat and chanting a firebolt cantrip at it.

Bern, listens at the eastern door (make a Perception roll MikeD), Lingo has been gathering up the bottles that are worth any money, and Balthazar had been reading the tomes when Ryssa's conversation with Droop registers to him.

He casts a Bolt of Fire at the rat who scurries underneath a workbench. The Firebolt misses the rat, and it scurries deeper into the legs of the benches and tables (additional attacks against the rat will be at disadvantage due to cover).

Bern can hear a 'banging' sound as of a door closing from the other side.

Either someone was leaving the 'room' on the other side ... or they were coming toward them. He took a moment to signal his companions ... pointing to his ears, then to the door and finally his finger to his lips to signal quiet. Then he went back to listening. He was straining for the sounds of footsteps in case that door signaled a person was headed =towards= them. As he listened, he shifted his weight. He readied himself to surprise whoever was on the other side as soon as the latch was lifted ...

[[ does the door open into our room or out? ]]

"Do you think we've lost some element of surprise?" he asks Balthazar. "A familar, you say? That means a spell caster."

Bern hears no more noise from the other side of the door, which opens into the room beyond the one the party is in (IOW "out"). Either whoever is/was there has left, stopped moving completely, or is able to be very quiet.

Without anything more to go on, he will assume that the person on the other side is being quiet. He remains ready to shove the door if he hears/feels the latch move.

"Shouldn't we hunt him down and kill his familiar before he has a chance to reorganize?" He didn't want to run headlong into an ambush, but staying there wasn't a good plan either. "Or do we head out and come back later? He will expect us and be more prepared but so will we."

Her arrow nocked and the bowstring pulled back almost to her ear, the cleric squatted on her haunches and duck-walked as she looked under the tables and benches, firing her arrow if she happened to spot the rat.

He continued to listen and seek the familiar, waiting to firebolt it.

Suddenly, the rat scuttles across the floor, making a break for the open doorway.

Balthazar and Ryssa, who were both ready can make attacks.

He had been waiting and spoke the words of casting, a flaming bolt shooting from his finger toward the rat.

Her arrow already nocked with drawstring pulled back, the cleric made quick aim and fired at the scurrying rat.

Both attacks hit the scurrying rat, and with a squeak, it dies.

Since the others seemed to have 'pest control' well in hand, he continued his vigil on the door, ready to 'spring' it if someone tried to open it.

Leaning forward, she retrieved her spent arrow, placed it in her quiver and spoke quietly to the goblin.

"Now he won't talk to him any more."

OK, rat (familiar?) is dead, killed by Balthazar and Ryssa. Bern is listening at the door to the next room. Lingo and Luminmorn are standing guard.

Where next?

[[ well last I heard, there were several folks 'ransacking' this room. Maybe they will be getting back to that now that the big dangerous rat is dead <weg> ]]

<Bern>

He remains vigilant, listening at the door.
