Davroar

Not sure how to communicate a reply, he nevertheless has to try. As a druid he respects all life. So he both thinks and speaks the same response.

"Back away a few feet and stop attacking us. No more mind tricks."

Still with his eyes on the creature, he holds up a hand.

"The creature is surrendering, do not attack. Kriv, see if you can pull up Karok."

He is ready with his staff in case the creature does not respond.

Jaliera

She may not trust the creature but she trusts Davroar. She lowers her arrow but keeps it ready just in case.

DM

With those words from Davroar, instead of attacking, the creature does back up. It disengages.

Kriv

He braced himself, trusting Davroar to pick up the slack if needed, as he peered down to look for Karok. He called over his shoulder,

"I suspect another trick. A token of good faith, if you please: How many minds are in range of your ability to..."

He searched for a suitable word,

"...mind-speak?"

Nothic
The creature telegraphs the knowledge to everyone at once t "Nothic speaks to all of you."

Davroar

Not sure if his friends can hear his 'thoughts', he both thinks and speaks.

"Nothic, you said you were just hungry. We might be able to help. What do you eat? And do many like us come through here?"

Jaliera

She watches the creature but also listens and watches the passages in case there are other arrivals.

Jaliera & Davroar

More of her attention is focused on the other passages as the Nothic threat seems to be lessening.

"Davroar, find out which paths the Redbrands use" she suggests.

The young druid thinks and says.

"I'll see if I can find you some food. There are others that pass through here, which passages to they use?"

Meanwhile he looks through his pack to find food for the Nothic. Obviously the Redbrands have been feeding it but not as regularly as it would like. He needs to consider the long term situation. If they deal with the Redbrands then an ever hungry Nothic may well pose a threat to the village.

Kriv

food brings food...

Well, that made things fairly clear. The Dragonborn, Ill-disposed to begging at the best of times, hardened his expression.

"What exactly do you want to eat?"

Nothic

Food. I eat food. Food brings food.

It seems to be indicating that it's been eating the corpse in the crevasse. Like other creatures, even humans, it doesn't draw a distinction between food and people. That seems to address the "food brings food" statement. It does seem quite intelligent.

Davroar

He takes some food out of his pack and moves forward to place it on the floor.

"I'm bringing you some food."

He hopes this is classed as food otherwise they have a bigger problem.

Nothic

The creature moves the food around before trying it. It seems to be satisfied. Are you doing anything else? It does not seem belligerent at the moment.

Good food it communicates back.

Davroar

Still trying to gain some information, he again asks a question of the Nothic.

"When food brings food, where does it come from?"

He points to the passageways.

Nothic
It indicates that food was brought from the northern opening.

Chandan

Eager to find out more about this aborrent, hypnotic man-eater, the old monk sidles off to the northern west passage to have a nose around.

He's very suspcicious of any creature whose first reaction to visitors is control their mind and slaughter them. If it were a starving animal, Chandan could understand -- it would know no better -- but a sentient being would have a blackened soul indeed to do such a thing.

Best to make sure there are no more lurking in the shadows!

Karok

There seemed to be no threat down here and from the sounds of it, whatever they faced was fighting up top or had been at least. He headed under the Northern bridge to look at something.

He pulled at the object in the notch and pulled out the chest. For now, he decided not to try opening it as it could be trapped and if it was locked, it was better to not break it open until after hauling it up.

Jaliera & Davroar

She shifts position so that she has good cover of the area but also so that she can watch Chandan.

The young druid still has concerns about the Nothic but thinks/says

"Thank you. We will try to return and bring more food."

Then he turns to Kriv.

"Let's get Karok back up, we should be able to hold the rope between us. Then we can explore the northern passage. It might be worth returning this way and checking out the rest after we finish our other business."

DM

The chest does not explode or emit noxious gas when it's moved, nor does it animate and attack. It's a simple wooden chest that is closed.

The Nothic seems pleased about the offer of more food.

Kallista

She has been frowning the whole time. Stopping fighting this thing just when they had the upper hand was not smart, in her opinion, unless it was to interrogate it. And all this talk and worry about feeding the damn thing, with the implication they are going to leave it alive to ambush them on the way back out when they might be hurt and vulnerable is foolhardy to her.

She moves up and presses a finger to it's head. "Tell me who is here, how many, and what kind? Tell me about the layout of this place. What will we find through each of those exits? Who runs this place? Who is in charge? Why are you here?"

She presses gently with her finger. "Answer me truthfully. If I do not believe you I will send a bolt of fire through your brain."

For added effect her eyes glow a deep red and her voice rumbles ominously.

Nothic

The monster seems intimidated by the powerful tiefling and starts to answer questions.

"There is one that tells others what to do. It is called Glassstaff and it goes there"

It indicates to the west.

"All food looks the same. Some are bigger and fuzzier. Groups are the same size as you when they bring me food."

"I am here because that is where I am. I stay here so this is the place I know."

It doesn't know the layout of this place.

Kallista

She turns and relays that information to the group. Glancing back at the Nothic she shrugs. "I believe it is telling the truth, as far as that goes. I think it knows more, though."

She says to the Nothic. "Where do the bigger, fuzzier ones go to?"

She doesn't really push it on why it's here. Best guess would be it sticks around because it gets fed, and the ones here feed it so it stays here as a sort of guard dog.

Kriv

The Dragonborn, never one to go easy on enemies at the best of times, turned towards the crevice and put his back into doing something useful.

Davroar & Jaliera

Jaliera continues to keep watch, bow at the ready.

Davroar calls out to Karok.

"Karok, can you hear us? Rope coming down for you to climb up."
