Has anyone else watched the show?

It seems to be polarizing in the reactions, people either love it or hate it. It will have a second season, but that is it. I have some big hopes for Season 2 smile

Personally there were some episodes that I did not care for, but over all I really enjoyed the show! It was great seeing a first year Cadet class get going. Some of the characters (Caleb) were not my favorite, but some (SAM) definitely were.

Anyone else watch this show? What are your thoughts?

I started watching the show half-way though, starting on episode 6. I want to watch it from the beginning though. I found the cinemaphotography annoying. I think that the colours in a lot of the scenes seemed too oversaturated to me.

I wonder if the oversaturation was a choice? Bright future, bright colors... by the time you see adults in Star Fleet the colors of the uniform have dimmed somewhat. Yeah, things have changed from the earlier episodes to episode 6. Episode 3 is one of my favorites, the deviousness of it was such fun!

I just started last week. Episode 1 being a little longer was annoying - love Holly Hunter! and Paul Giamatti is chewing up his scenes with relish. I'll keep you posted on likes and dislikes. Keep hoping to see elements of our intrepid little Academy cadets. wink

I saw a little bit of them, not a huge amount but enough to make me nostalgic.

Just read the show has been cancelled due to low viewership numbers.

It will have a second season, and the fan-base is pretty devoted. So I am trying not to let the two-season limitation get me down.

Starfleet Academy seems to be, and I mentioned in the first post, a show that is polarizing in the reactions. While I cannot speak to the viewer numbers, I can saw the anti-inclusion crowd was in full swing in all of the Star Trek forums online, not just the Academy ones, bashing the show.

Which, honestly, made me want to watch it even more smile

Quite a few people referred to it as not "real Trek" because the characters were immature at times. Well... they are first year cadets, not the seasoned officers of most of the show, or not even the semi-ready ensigns just out of the academy.

First year students.

One of the quotes of the show really stood out to me, the students are there to learn the skills to let them BE Starfleet Officers

"I'm teaching you to end wars. To learn the patience to formulate a true strategy and the empathy to understand your opponents so you can disarm them."
Chancellor Nahla Ake (played by the amazing Holly Hunter)

Of course there was the counter belief:
"I can promise you, they shenanned once, they'll shenann again"
Commander Thok (played by the brilliant Gina Yashere)

Okay we finished the first season last night. Loved the "yearbook" credits scenes at the end BTW.

Overall, loved it!

It is definitely written for and as Young Adult. So, it was a bit over-angsty; bold, but not complex (like the lighting); and a lot like kids that don't realize that they have to grow up.

Ironically, I think that most Trekkie kids might be more geared towards "Lower Decks" than this story format. But - I am not a young adult anymore.

The best characters were the adults. SPOILERS Loved that Reno and Thok were a couple! Loved the playfulness, authority, and pain of Ake. Even the Doctor got depth!

I look forward to more. Even in a condensed season I hope they go through to graduation. I would have loved a full three-year arc.

Happy to keep chatting about it all. Has anyone else seen it?

I also watched it, and while I enjoyed the antics of the kids- I agree with you Lionhawke, the adults were the best part of the show.

Reno and Thok are my favorite couple.

Thok and Nahla Ake were my second favorite adult pair to interact.

Holly Hunter slammed it out of the park wit her role- yes she was different than most officers, but she was also working with a lot of kids who had been broken by recent events.

She was more about them than she was about regulations- unless the regs suited her.

Thok was and is one of my all time favorite Star Trek characters now: "Are you not respecting dinner?"

The show had its- cringe- moments.

But over all, the show was fun to watch.

Of the kids- I liked the fact that they did grow through the season.

They started coming together as a team.

I had a discussion with a friend about SAM recently- and they were put off because she is overweight.

The discussion was funny- at least to me.
Them: She's over weight, I don't understand how she could meet the physical requirements for Starfleet.

Me: She's a hologram.

Them: She's over weight.

Me: She's a hologram.

Them: But- she's-

Me: (interrupting) She is a hologram. She can alter what her physical form looks like and its properties with a thought.

You saw that- but in this form she doesn't look threatening.

She does not look like she is competition to the others cadets.

She was constantly underestimated by the others because of that.

SAM's physical abilities don't change depending on what her form looks like- she's a hologram- she doesn't have any density at all unless she wants to.
