Epic: Sweeping stories like Wheel of Time, Epic Fantasy is characterized by its grand scale, world-threatening conflicts. Many Dungeons & Dragons campaigns fall into this category. Steam Punk: Quirky stories that blends the science fiction elements of steam-powered technology with the fantasy elements of magic, mythical creatures, and alternative historical settings, often drawing inspiration from the Victorian era and 19th-century science fiction. Castle Falkenstein is a perfect example of Steam Punk. Horror: Dark and dangerous stories, often with elements of nightmares or classic gothic tales. Ravenloft fits this category perfectly. Urban: Modern setting incorporating elements of magic or mysticism, usually like the normal world, but holding a secret side- but can sometimes be “normal” world where the elements of magic are accepted. The Dresden Files, Mage the Ascension, Vampire the Gathering, or the Anita Blake Books all showcase Urban Fantasy. Techno: Similar to Steam Punk, Techo pulls elements from a slightly future world, science fiction and magic. Shadowrun and Cyberpunk 2077 are Techno Fantasy. Assume the setting, GM, and story are ideal for you, and not a question… now which of the Genres calls to you and says “Play me!” Once you have that idea… do you want to add in some additional flavor? Would you like a bit of PULP to your story? Maybe an Urban Pulp game, in the style of The Librarian movie (or The Librarians TV series). Maybe you want to combine two, or more, genres, like Steam Punk and Horror to come up with a Penny Dreadful game. What genre inspired games would you like to play? | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 80,351 Likes: 75 Wizop Administrator | Wizop Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 80,351 Likes: 75 | Epic probably first, urban second. | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,599 Likes: 16 Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator | Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,599 Likes: 16 | Always makes me think not only of what I want to play in, but what I might want to run.
Of late in the mood for Steampunk and Epic to play in. Though I might run Urban or Steampunk. | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,053 Likes: 12 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,053 Likes: 12 | | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,496 Likes: 12 Member | Member Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,496 Likes: 12 | I am more interested in he story than the setting <shrug>

I don't care if they roll behind the scenes or just decide on their own to make a story. It's the story and interaction that I want more than anything. | | | | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 17,408 Likes: 30 Mayhem Inc. Moderator | Mayhem Inc. Mike, if the story idea for all genres was equally intriguing, which Genre would pull you the most? | | | | Joined: May 2014 Posts: 5,428 Likes: 2 Confusingly Confused Moderator | OP Confusingly Confused Moderator Joined: May 2014 Posts: 5,428 Likes: 2 | Question for everyone:
If you wanted to RUN a game- even if it was just thinking about it- which game Genre(s) would you like to run, and what kind of setting would you like? | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,496 Likes: 12 Member | Member Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,496 Likes: 12 | Gryph ... as I tried to convey ... it isn't about to setting, the system, etc. It is about the story and how it 'plays' <g>

Alduin, if someone were to do a DS style show, what would you like to see? I admit that has been in my thoughts a bit lately. Also, LOVE the Dresden Files! Have you read the Anita Blake books by Laurell K. Hamilton? Fun supernatural urban setting, a bit smutty as the series went on, but I enjoy that universe.

I think it would work great for a modern style game, Dark Shadows included. Loved the Anita Blake vampire books. One of those guilty pleasures.

It's like dinner- sometimes you don't know that you want until you get the menu.
