It's been a while since we did a Genre Poll, so-

What Non-Fantasy Genre, or Genres, do you enjoy the most- or would love to play in?

Action Adventure: Think Raiders of the Lost Ark or Tomb Raider. Games where the action moves fast, usually full of exotic locations and mysterious foes.

Soap Opera: Drama, characterized like the Soap Operas on TV- Dream Lyrics has had a few, most notably PCT (Palm Crescent Trauma). Think the movie Soapdish, the TV shows Soap, One Life to Live, Dark Shadows, or Passions. If you like sudsy fun, this genre is for you!

Horror: Calling the Old Ones, vampires, demons, werewolves, mummies, and insane serial killers! Do you like games that keep you on the edge of your seat, that show the darkness that may live in the world, or at least your nightmares?

Supers: Figures like Superman, the X-Men, The Shadow, The Phantom… movies like Sky High, Zoom: Academy for Superheroes, The Incredibles, and the Mystery Men all fall into the Supers genre.

Space/Sci-Fi: Often set in the future, or galaxies far, far, away, Space/Sci-Fi games take on a larger scope than just one small world. Think Lost in Space, Star Wars, Star Trek (really any Star named show or movie) and you have the idea.

Assume the setting, GM, and story are ideal for you, and not a question… now which of the Genres calls to you and says “Play me!”

Once you have that idea… do you want to add in some additional flavor?

Would you like a bit of PULP to your story? Think Wild Cards (George R. R. Martin anthology) would be a mix of Supers and pulp.

Maybe you want to combine two genres, like Soap and Space- like Babylon 5. Or mix Action Adventure with Space and you get Firefly.

What genre inspired games would you like to play?

Action Adventure would be my first choice, Sci-Fi second - as long as I could visual the setting like Star Trek, Babylon 5, fiefly etc.

And love both the graphics for these threads!

I completely agree with Gypsy's selection, Action Adventure followed by Sci-Fi to play in.

Supers followed by Sci-Fi

Action adventure.

Wish I could take credit for the graphics, but AI and my search skills get all the credit (along with the original artists).

But I was happy with how it all came together

Sci-fi and horror are definitely the bottom two for me. As far as the rest, The better the story and the less mechanics come into the game, the better for me.

I love Soapy type games, and Supers... Sci-Fi too! Horror can be fun. Action Adventure depending on the setting, and that is one that I would love to add Pulp to!

I like Sci-Fi with my second preference is Supers

Maybe a Soapy Sci-Fi Adventure... Know I enjoyed the short run of Ken's Super game.

Question for everyone:

If you wanted to RUN a game- even if it was just thinking about it- which game Genre(s) would you like to run, and what kind of setting would you like?

Ooooohhhh Noooooo!!! I made the mistake of trying to run games in the past <sigh> Didn't go well!!!

Been thinking about Outgunned Adventure, for a 1930s-esq pulp style run. But again it is a question of time and making sure what I have agreed to are flourishing.

Mike, this is not a nudge to plan a game to run, but if you could what kind of game would intrigue the inner GM?

Nivek, lol! But, to be honest, I have never once in my life tried to trick anyone. Emphasis on tried.

While some (Mina) might try to trick you (again Mina) into running a G-A-M-E, and I am not mentioning anyone by name (Mina), that's not me.

I just like hearing ideas from others about what kind of games they would like to run, setting, system, what-have-you.

It gets my creativity humming, and it might for others too.

I always love supers, esp. if we take it out of 'modern world' - I always thought something like supers in a "Savage Land" or future setting would be more interesting.

As for Sci Fi - I love B5 and Firefly lore.

Ouch! Okay, I admit I am guilty of nudging Nivek a bit... but only because he ran one of my all time favorite games on DL! He's an amazing GM who should be celebrated... and run more games!

I need to devote more of my spare time to finish my sci-fi setting. I still have to decide if I should run rules-light or use an existing system. These surveys do offer good insight to what potential players like.

I am a mixed results kind of a person in that one of the reasons I like to play/run games is to explore the mechanics and universe of a particular system. For example, I have been thinking about Star Trek and considering Star Trek Adventures 2e to run it and to play the system. Or Shadow Scar to explore the multiverse with world-hoping ninjas. But on the other, I know from experience that PbP does well with light mechanics to avoid some of the bogdown that inevitably comes from using more complicated systems.

For me it's action/adventure 1st, horror 2nd, Sci-fi/Space 3rd. Supers a distant 4th and I can never see myself in a Soap so I wouldn't even give it 5th place.
