Since they released a book called How to Write Adventure Modules That Don't Suck in Jan, it'd be interesting to see if their adventure modules don't suck. The problem is, if you design an OSR adventure module you have an excuse for it sucking because modules generally did back in the day. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 11,097 Likes: 5 Administrator | OP Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 11,097 Likes: 5 | MarchCubicle 7 Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Imperium Maledictum Starter Set Vault 5e: Hammer & Anvil Vault 5e: Mortar & Pestle Goodman GamesDungeon Crawl Classics RPG: The Caverns of Thracian HC Compendium of Dungeon Crawls Volume 3 HC Compendium of Dungeon Crawls Volume 4 HC Dungeon Crawl Classics #67: Sailors on the Starless Sea HC Dungeon Crawl Classics #109: Beneath the Isle of Serpents DCC Horror #5: Tome of Adventure HC DCC RPG Annual HC DCC Tome of Adventure #6: Holiday Adventures HC DCC Tome of Adventure #7: Magic Gods and Demons HC Dungeon Crawl Classics #110: The Sacrificial Pyre of Thracia SC Fifth Edition Fantasy #28: Beneath the Isle of Serpents SC Fifth Edition Fantasy #30: Hellpits of Nightfang SC Fifth Edition Fantasy #28: The Sacrificial Pyre of Thracia SC Dungeon Crawl Classics: Hellpits of Nightfang SC Monsters & Magic of Thracia SC Original Adventures Reincarnated #9: Caverns of Thracia HC Original Adventures Reincarnated #9.5: Hellpits of Nightfang SC Xcrawl Classics #7: Save Xcrawl! I have to mention Grimwild there is a free version of the rules located here on Drivethru. They also have a paid version which includes a bit more goodies. I was a backer, and have become enamored with the nature of the cinematic rule set. It is a lot like an updated FitD, but with some additional tools. Really plays well, IMHO. Some like to call it a better version of Dungeon World. I think it goes much further than that. I think it is a new take on narrative gaming, which aims towards the fantastical cinematic end of the narrative spectrum. Needless to say Nem, I think you should give it a read. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 | I'm reading it now, thanks, Pande!! I've also watched a few reviews of Daggerheart and it seems to be a well-received, high quality interpretation of 5e fantasy with simpler, less swingy mechanics and board game-style cards instead of character sheets. Reviewers seem most surprised that it isn't more different/unusual. But perhaps the most pervasive criticism of D&D 5e is that it's too inaccessible to new players. So, making a more accessible alternative with visual aids and more predictable results makes a lot of sense. Maybe that's what the aim of Daggerheart is. | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator | Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 | Wel your review makes me want to give Daggerheart another look. That was a collection of pretty useless adventures in hindsight. Each had the barebones of a plot, fine, but did no heavy lifting for the DM. | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator | Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 | | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 | Now that, sir, is very interesting! I read about it on Redit, and got a copy. It has tables for everything. You can mix and match and create unique monsters right at the moment, plus even though it is built for DnD style games, it is agnostic enough that you can use it elsewhere with a tiny bit of modification. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 11,097 Likes: 5 Administrator | OP Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 11,097 Likes: 5 | AugustCubicle 7Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Imperium Maledictum Inquisition Player's Guide Mongoose PublishingTraveller: Reach Adventure 9 - The Hellworkd Heists Traveller: Clans of the Aslan Traveller: The Riverland Paizo PublishingPathfinder Flip-Mat: Command Center Pathfinder Treasure Vault (Remastered) Pocket Edition Pathfinder Game Night: Dawn of the Frogs (Deluxe Adventure) (P2) Pathfinder Adventure Path: Myth-Speaker Part 2 - Titanbane Starfinder Player Character Folio Starfinder Flip-Mat: Garage Warehouse Starfinder GM Core Starfinder Galaxy Guide Pocket Edition Renegade Game StudiosWelcome to Night Vale Roleplaying Game | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 | I've never listened to Welcome to Night Vale podcast but it does remind me of an RPG genre I struggle with.
Weird mysteries. Over The Edge, for example. I've enjoyed reading every edition. Never ran it. Same with Unknown Armies.
Running a compelling investigation game is hard enough but then throw in surreal stuff that can obliterate suspension of disbelief instantly... I can't imagine running a campaign game successfully. A one shot perhaps, where everyone's driving their character like they stole them.
I suppose horror is basically the same animal in a darker, more visceral skin, but that change in tone does make a difference.
Any of you guys had experiences with weird mystery games? | | | | Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator | Chaotic Obfuscator Moderator Joined: May 2009 Posts: 16,929 Likes: 16 | I absolutely love Over the Edge! But you do have to embrace your inner gonzo and let it go.
I don't know Unknown Armies. Might have to go look it up.
I agree they are challenging to run, and you need the right group of players. I find it hard to parcel out the information in a way to make it believable, but not to starve them of information too. It is a fine line, too much or too little, I agree.
I do love to run them though. Just look at On Common Ground my homage to Old World of Darkness, it is a weird mystery in my opinion. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,264 Likes: 10 | Gonzo neatly describes the challenge. Gonzo is subjective immersion in the weird, it's a sense of going mad, a personal trip. Sharing that effectively is a daunting challenge. Like you say, Pande, you need the right group of players. I know the same could be said for any RPG (including D&D) but with weird mystery I think you're far less likely to bump into the right group of players by happy coincidence. | | |
