[OOC Sindar is +1 to Animal Handling, not that it matters.

Sindar has no spells that can influence a mudslide, unless it is magically created, which would be counter charm, but there is no indication he would know that.

The only other thing he can do is off a Bardic Inspiration to someone. For Meta's sake, lets pick someone who needs to use it, and a d8 might make a difference.]

There are two PCs that are proficient in Survival Bern at +5 and Zindra at +5. Here's Zindra's roll:

1) Let me clarify things. I'm glad a lot of you want to help me out, but you have no idea what you're dealing with yet.
2) I'm going to delete a lot of OOC chatter that doesn't belong in this thread, which gets cluttered so fast.
3) I want to clear things up. Combat order was determined after round 0 We are at initiative 20 in round 1 ...

Round 0 - no initiative yet. This is prior to the mudslide happening.
Sindar - Riding on wagon, Rolls: animal handling roll wasn't needed because Arus succeeded.
Aubric - offers Zindra Guidance, Dismounts
Zindra - Dismounted. Rolled:Perception with Guidance. Needed an 18 got a total of 11. Fails.
Kriv - Stays mounted, Rolled: Perception at disadvantage got a 4 needed 18
Bern - Dismounted (I gave Bern the Survival roll, which he succeeded in (rolled a 19), retroactively.
Pavel - Dismounted
Zhu - Dismounted
Jaliera - Dismounted Rolled:Perception at disadvantage got a 12 needed 18
Davroar - Dismounted
Arus - Driving wagon. Rolled a 20 for animal handling. Succeeded!

Round 1 - initiative rolled. You all see the mudslide. Some of you are able to react before it reaches you.

Arus's aura of protection will help Sindar and Boris the draft horse - nobody else.

Also MikeD, to be clear again, you don't get to do any of that hunter's mark stuff. I'll let you know if and when there's a target. Also, once I know who Sindar inspires, the mudslide goes. So it's not Bern's turn.

The rocky and slippery ground claims some victims. Zindra and Pavel, who dismounted and tried to steady their horses are knocked off their feet and loses hold of the reins to their mounts. They look up the hillside and sees a wave of mud and stone coming at them. Kriv, who decided to stay mounted, and his horse both fall prone into the oncoming rush of debris and mud coming at them. While Aubric is able to stay on his feet, his horse is not. As for the wagon, even with Arus and Sindar doing their best, Boris falls to the ground threatening to topple the wagon and both riders into the mud.

OOC: Some mechanics. Those who are prone are at risk of suffocation when the mud comes. It'll be over their heads. That includes any prone horse. Those prone can use half their slowed move to stand. As most of you have move of 30. Slowed is 15. Half that leaves you a move of 5 after you stand. Fortunately movement is not as critical as preparing for what's coming. Once that mud slide hits (on initiative 10) you'll all (including the horses) need to make strength saves to keep from being swept into the rapids. Those who are prone will make that save at disadvantage. If you don't stand up you will also begin holding your breath as the wave of mud covers you completely. You will also take damage at that point as the debris hits.

If you had initiative between 10-20 you have your action now (all aside from Sindar, who went, Arus and Davroar). You've heard a warning from Bern that there's something "else" going on. You can prepare for that. You can try to mitigate the effects of the mudslide somehow. The wagon, while not toppled over, is in severe risk of toppling. Unless something is done, Boris will topple the wagon and everything on it - including the items to be delivered and much of your food.

There aren't any enemy targets right now - just the mudslide, which seems dangerous enough. But you know your DM weg

All who fell (Zindra, Pavel, Boris, Kriv, Kriv's horse and Aubric's horse) take 6 points of damage:

All Falling damage
Neptune rolled 1d6 and got 6

Note: I haven't figured out yet why the PDFs won't update.

Seeing the mud coming right for her, the scout stands up and looks for something to grab to not get swept away. She finds the reins to her horse and grabs those, hoping that the horse is strong enough to avoid being swept away too.

Aubric is inspired by Sindar's motivational speech, however brief, but holds onto that inspiring thought to use for later, as he manages to turn in just the right direction to effectively avoid being knocked over as the initial wave of the mudslide hits.

The thunderous rumble of earth and debris triggers a vivid flashback to his survival of a shipwreck a few years earlier... the splintering of wood, the crashing of waves, and the panicked cries of his fellow sailors echo in his memory. Amidst the chaos of the sinking ship, Aubric had made a split-second decision that saved his life. He'd spotted the sturdy frame of the captain's quarters, still partially intact and bobbing in the tumultuous sea. He'd swum towards it, clambering onto the makeshift raft just as a massive wave threatened to drag him under. As a bonus, the cabin contained several bottles of the ship's liquor stores, which were useful as a disinfectant -- and pain reliever -- when he finally made it to shore.

Now, as the mud churns around him, Aubric's survival instincts kick in once more. His horse goes down, but he manages to keep his footing, his eyes darting frantically for a safe haven. The cart, with Arus and Sindar at the reins, seems like a floating sanctuary amidst the chaotic sea of mud.

But Boris has been felled by the wave, and the cart no longer seems like a safe haven -- at least one that he'd climb on top of. Aubric does move a bit to be on the "mud-ward" side of the cart so that any force would push him into the cart and not past it, and reaches to grab hold of it both to keep himself steady as the mud continues to come down the hill, and perhaps provide just a bit more weight on the side most likely to lift up, hoping to prevent it tipping over. He'll let go rather than let it drag him into danger, though.

To improve Boris and the cart passengers' chances, Aubric does call on some of his magic to help improve their odds.

Bless 1st Level
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You bless up to three creatures of your choice within range [Arus, Sindar, Boris]. Whenever a target makes an attack roll or a saving throw before the spell ends, the target can roll a d4 and add the number rolled to the attack roll or saving throw.


Amidst all this chaos, Aubric looks up the hill, prompted by Bern's observation that this isn't a natural event. He tries to make out any threats who may have triggered the mudslide, initially suspecting either creatures or evidence of unnatural alterations to the terrain.

He drops the reins to his horse, leaving it to fend for itself. [His horse uses its movement to stand from prone.]

Seeing the mudslide, Jaliera quickly realises that she is much better reversing direction rather than moving into the centre of it. She grabs Meadow's rein and heads back as fast as she can, urging her horse to move fast, and hoping to avoid the mud entirely.

She hopes everyone will be OK, wondering what animal does well in mud that Davroar could become, or maybe a bird to fly above it?

Seeing the danger to the wagon and those around it she casts a spell. Thick strands of tough webbing form, covering the wagon, Boris, Arus, Sindar, and Aubric. "Grab the webs!" She shouts, so they know it is not an enemy attack. She is hopeful the webs will provide an anchor to help stop anyone from being swept away, and she can dispel them once the danger is past. She then moves a few feet to her left and up, putting herself directly behind a large tree in order to gain some level of protection from any more flowing mud and debris, hopeful it will part around the tree in front of her and sweep past to both sides.

(OOC - I moved Zhu on the map and placed the Web spell. Also note, if she has any move left she will use it to climb the tree to get off the ground. I believe she moved 10 feet, which is 20 for difficult terrain, so she may be able to climb 5 feet up?)

He swiftly rose to his feet, very much aware of the torrent of mud and debris incoming. He strode forward, drawing on his inner reserves to push himself far enough to avoid catching comrades on the blast, moving obliquely to cover the head of the column. He roared into the looming mudslide, trying to blast a break into the oncoming surge through magical, draconic force, looking to steer it beyond where it would threaten to engulf them.

After Bern and his horse made your saves to stay on their feet and then him realizing that the cause of this landslide is not purely natural, he sees the mud, logs and rocks come hurtling towards him. It will strike in a moment. Some of his friends are bracing themselves and steady their horses, others are trying to move away to safety or trying to help others survive by casting spells and inspiring them. What are you doing?
