Can anyone attune (even non spell-casters or those who can't cast those spells) or do you have to be able to cast the spell on the rune (ie the spell has to be among your Class spells) in order to attune to the item | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 Maris Imperium Moderator | Maris Imperium Moderator Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 | On the runestones: I oopsed and didn't check my notes/DM source, quoting from memory. You'll probably prefer the alternative The lightning rune is actually the Lightning Bolt spell, DC14 save. The stone crumbles to dust after the third usage. The fear rune is also a DC14 save, and self-destructs after being used the third time. As it's a concentration spell but the concentration was by the rune creator, it will last for a minute, the user of the rune does not need to maintain concentration on it and can use it while concentrating on another spell. Not anyone can attune; you must be a member of a class that could normally cast the spell, so the lightning bolt rune must be a Wizard, Sorcerer, or Druid (Circle of the Land (Mountain)), etc. and fear rune would be Bard, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard. As mentioned before, using them requires a (free) object manipulation, so can be used in addition to actions and bonus actions. (But the same PC can't use both runes or multiple charges in the same turn!) On the Troll potions, assuming you purchased them, here's the description: Potion of Troll Regeneration (for Leather Armor or Weapon Hilt)When applied to leather armor or the hilt of a melee weapon, the Potion of Troll Regeneration grants the wearer/wielder the ability to regenerate 5 hit points at the start of each of their turns for up to 1 minute (10 rounds). The regeneration is halted for 1 round if the wearer/wielder takes acid or fire damage. In addition, each application has 3 charges which heal an additional 1d6 + 2 hit points. A charge is expended when the wearer takes damage and is reduced to below half of their maximum hit points, triggering the regeneration effect. If the user is reduced to 0 hit points and regenerates (either immediately with one of the charges or at the start of their next turn if the charges are expended), there is a 10% chance that the regeneration will attempt to create additional limbs or a troll-like appendage (thematic, but no mechanical effect unless the DM chooses otherwise). | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,132 Likes: 13 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,132 Likes: 13 | Questions:
1-On potions: - Potion cannot be drunk? Can only be applied to Leather or Weapon hilt? - Must the user be in physical contact with the weapon hilt continuously to use or just initially to trigger (ie can you leave your weapon sheathed and just touch the hilt to trigger the effect?)
2-Runestones - Eldritch Knight (Kriv) gets Evocation Wizard spells so he could use the Lightning Runestone too? - Arcane Trickster (Jaliera) gets Wizard Illusion Spells so can she use the Fear Runestone? | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 Maris Imperium Moderator | Maris Imperium Moderator Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 | Questions:
1-On potions: - Potion cannot be drunk? Can only be applied to Leather or Weapon hilt? The witch has not experimented with drinking it yet. If mere skin contact can cause one to potentially grow troll appendages, what would drinking it do? Turn your skin troll green permanently? Eat out your stomach with acid? Cause you to immediately grow two heads? You're welcome to experiment, and possibly draw up a new character sheet just in case things go south. - Must the user be in physical contact with the weapon hilt continuously to use or just initially to trigger (ie can you leave your weapon sheathed and just touch the hilt to trigger the effect?) Breaking contact will stop the effect after one complete round. For example, when you drop to 0 HP, you normally drop your weapon. This will not stop the immediate or next-turn regen but those would not continue to the next round unless you pick up your weapon. You could use your object interaction to touch the hilt at the start of each round if you like. 2-Runestones - Eldritch Knight (Kriv) gets Evocation Wizard spells so he could use the Lightning Runestone too? If he has the ability to learn/cast lightning bolt, yes. - Arcane Trickster (Jaliera) gets Wizard Illusion Spells so can she use the Fear Runestone? If she has the ability to learn/cast fear, yes. | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 Maris Imperium Moderator | Maris Imperium Moderator Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 | - Potion cannot be drunk? If you really want to know: Immediate Effects:
Rapid Regeneration: The drinker would immediately regain 5d10 hit points, healing any non-lethal injuries, including lost limbs. This regeneration lasts for 1 minute (10 rounds), during which the drinker heals 10 hit points at the start of each of their turns unless they take acid or fire damage.
Trollish Endurance: For the next hour, the drinker gains resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage from non-magical attacks, mimicking the toughness of a troll’s hide.
Potential Side Effects (Roll 1d6): 1-2: No Adverse Effect: The potion works as intended, and the drinker enjoys enhanced regeneration for the duration without any complications. 3-4: Minor Mutation: The drinker grows a small troll-like feature, such as an extra finger, a patch of greenish skin, or slightly sharpened teeth. This feature is mostly cosmetic but permanent. 5: Regenerating Limb: One of the drinker’s limbs (arm, leg, or even an ear) begins to grow another version of itself, becoming troll-like in appearance. This new limb or feature is fully functional but unsightly and might cause problems when interacting with others. It also grants advantage on Strength checks with that limb. 6: Troll Rage: The drinker enters a rage-like state for 1 minute. During this time, they cannot distinguish friend from foe and must attack the nearest creature. At the end of the rage, the drinker suffers 1 level of exhaustion.
Long-Term Consequences:
Troll Instincts: After drinking the potion, the drinker will experience a lingering hunger for raw meat and feel an uncharacteristic attraction to violence.
Permanent Mutation: Over time as the drinker digests, the drinker will start to take on more permanent troll-like characteristics, such as increased regeneration but also vulnerabilities to fire and acid, along with growing a more monstrous appearance. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 80,951 Likes: 83 Wizop Administrator | Wizop Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 80,951 Likes: 83 | I need to add the fear stone to my sheet but cannot remember how to access it. Someone just mailed in their check and I was surprised to see a D&D stamp on it. Any chance of answers? | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,132 Likes: 13 (Buffalo) Moderator | (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 23,132 Likes: 13 | Gypsy - I can chime in here and help a bit:
- Neptune or Aqua would need to help you with access to your sheet. I presume you have to go to D&D Beyond. That is where I go to edit mine. I manually added the Lightning Stone to Zhu's sheet in D&D Beyond forex (BTW, it is not intuitive how to add unique things in D&D Beyond. I had to fumble around a bit to do it myself).
- To follow on the above answer, typically you would need to manually edit your sheet to add things you find. Aqua may do it to be nice but normally its on the player to do it so if it is missing (ie no one else took any of the potions you mention) you need to add them.
- As for armour, you are wearing Leather Armour according to your sheet. You can purchase normal Studded Leather armour (assuming any is available) which would upgrade your AC by +1 and has no penalties for you

Please remind me. Your sheet is here. Bookmark it. Once you "log in" to the site you can edit it and use it to keep track of spell slots, etc. It also helps you know what dice to roll. Also in the narrative, it mentions the 3 healing potions and extra healing that Jaliera bought but only 1 is listed on her sheet? We haven't really been actively tracking inventory on our sheets. We probably should. I'll defer to Nep on nthis. Apart from magical armour, can Jaliera upgrade hers without causing any negative effects on her abilities? Take a look at the "Armor" table on this page: https://roll20.net/compendium/dnd5e/Armor#content | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,574 Likes: 7 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,574 Likes: 7 | A word about updating your character sheet. My apologies because this might be TLDR. I admit that it's a bit of a rant. Skip to the bold items to see direct answers to the questions asked. But do try to follow my ramblings first. It adds context. Maybe, for now, it will require the DM's help. It's not you, it's WOTC. They are kind of in the middle of an upgrade from the 2014 version of DnD5e to DnD5.24 or whatever you want to call it. Everything is changing and it's chaotic. We are playing (for now) the 2014 rules. But what did WOTC do? They blanket updated everything to the 2024 rules. Only after the collective "we" of players and DMs went ballistic did they add back the 2014 options. So spells, classes, species (races), items, and all kinds of stuff have two versions. For instance, there's no such thing as a half-elf any longer. To compound the problem, the Player's Handbook came out in September and the DMs guide was released yesterday. I just learned that flanking was eliminated. This staggered release still has one leg to go. The Monster Manual isn't coming out until February. We already know that monsters are changing dramatically. What this means is that DMs can't really run a 2024 game. A revelation (to WOTC but not to DMs everywhere) was that at high levels (10+) the PCs were slaughtering their foes. What was considered a "Deadly Encounter" in 2014 rules is considered to be a "Medium Encounter" in the new 2024 rules. There's new math to deal with. So we're stuck in rules limbo until the Monster Manual is out. Aqua and I will discuss how we'll be going forward but for now we're playing with legacy rules. The short answer to the question about adding the fear stone item to your sheetI'll have to add it because it's not a standard item and it needs to be created as a custom item. Armor upgrade Not so fast. Did you check to see if the armor rules are the 2014 rules? InventoryWe should be tracking everything on the sheet. We should work together to get everything straight. Oh, and apologies for being slow. It's astounding how busy one can get when you're retired and have grandchildren

I have added items, taking the decision to add 2 of my missing healing potions from before as a happy medium. However along with the stone, I cannot add the herbal or the troll's balm. | | | | Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 Maris Imperium Moderator | Maris Imperium Moderator Joined: Nov 2004 Posts: 12,842 Likes: 23 | There’s a way to add homebrew items.
