She looks over to Cat who seemed to know both of them.

"Cat what was that all about?"

[OOC: I am willing to let you guys make a roll, though what skill would you roll? I am open to negotiation. Basically think of it as gathering information for a language you don't know kind of a roll. Could be Notice, or something to do with Deception or? You tell me, and make the roll. I will offer additional info ranked by success.]

[OOC - use 'common knowledge' ? or persuasion from Coral reading people when using her 'persuasion' skill?]

[OOC: Sure either of those is fine. Mostly looking for ways for you in game to learn things that you might from body language etc...]

Coral reflected on what she had just witnessed

[OOC: A 4 lets you know that the old man wanted something from the woman, probably along the lines of her accompanying him for some task. Though it isn't clear what that is.]

Coral

"I'll be back in a minute," she told her companions, and hurried out of the Rusty Dragon, to see if she could catch sight of the man and catch up with him.

Catalena

Cat had given Ameiko a wide berth as she made her way back into the common room from the kitchen door. She had rather a bemused expression.

At Selaim's inquiry, she smiled slightly, and said, "Oh, she and her father don't get along particularly well. His family is one of the four founding lines in Sandpoint. He's quite influential and he runs the Sandpoint Glassworks, that does exquisite craftsmanship that is exported to nations all around the Inner Sea and beyond."

She shrugged. "I'm a big fan of their work, truth be told, but the man himself... not so much. He is extremely proper, strict, and snobbish. And as a widower, his hope had been that Ameiko would follow in his footsteps and help him run the business, I suppose. But instead she went off and adventured for a number of years and came back and turned her prizes into starting up the Rusty Dragon here, which is one of the best taverns in Varisia. She's a fantastic artist in playing the shamisen as well as a chef."

"In me," she sighed, "I suppose he sees similarities to what he considers the worst aspects of his daughter. But I think they're her best."

She winked.

"No idea what this was about. I don't speak Minkaian... at least, not yet."

A 7 at noticing anything about the man and the exchange.

"But yelling at her isn't a way to get her back." Selaim said in disbelief. "He's just building more walls coming at her like that." She glances over to the door where Ameiko door to the kitchen.

"Do you think she is alright?"

Catalena

Cat smiled. "She's used to it. Why do you think she went off adventuring in the first place? She'll be fine. Ameiko is tough."

Despite her confident smile, Catalena's eyes seemed troubled before she turned away to gaze back at the kitchen.

Aendell

He'd watched the exchange with a little interest. Nothing else much was happening to attract his attention otherwise. He has nothing really to contribute to the event so he just observes.

Selaim knows what I posted above.

Coral rushes out and sees the old man stomping away.

She cast Empathy on the man and then hurried to catch him up.

"Hey, " she said calmly as she caught up with him. "You seem pretty upset. Why not tell me what's troubling you?"

Coral knows the man is disappointed, unhappy, and angry all at once. His feelings are a storm of emotion over flowing on to his visage.

He looks at the girl "you are exactly the problem. You don't stay home and support your family. Because of that good girls don't do as they are told." His words are angry, but filled with regret as well.

Coral

She glared at him.

"I have no home!"

"I have no family!"

It came out as a shout.

"People like you hit the smallest roadblock in how you imagine you want your life to be and suddenly it is the child's fault. They are failing to make your life what you want it to be and suddenly everything is their fault. You are the adult - and yet it is their fault.
Somehow it is nothing to do with you failing to achieve your goals, it is somehow the child's fault that your goals are not achieved.
And many like you then think - that if the child gets left in an orphanage you can start your life again and achieve all your goals.
And the child gets abandoned."

"Or the child realises that the adult is projecting blame on them for the adult's failure and leaves before they are abandoned ...."

"Is that what happened with you?" she accused

She realised that she had become angry, and wisps of smoke were spiraling off her fingers

Aendell

When he sees Coral rush out after the man he gets up and follows. He knew Coral a little bit back in Magnimar but he has seen the power she now wields and it seems dangerous to him. The kind of power that might take over a person if they're not careful.

Reaching the street he sees Coral and the man and hears them shouting at each other. He steps softly close and places a gentle hand on Coral's shoulder. "Easy Coral. He is traditional and can't understand. Best to let him be."

Honestly Aendell would not mind if he had a family who cared about him as much as this man does for his daughter, even if that care has led him to misunderstanding her desires.

The old man yells back "Exactly the problem. I have been the adult, I have protected her, nurtured her even after her mother died. I took care of everything and this is what she does. She pays for that love by leaving and ignoring her responsibilities. You don't understand, you can't understand. You are not..." his voice trails off both in volume and in words.

Getting revved up again he yells "the orphanage should have done its job just as I have. You have no idea what it is to live the way you are supposed to. Begone urchin!"

Aendell

His face hardens. "I will encourage you to keep a civil tongue in your head, Sir. Your speech reveals your ignorance. Probably not a good idea to broadcast that ignorance across the town. Best you begone now lest you wish to be taught a lesson."

The old man turns his fury on Aendell. "Do you have any idea who I am? Begone. You are not worthy of my attention." With that he turns and starts to stomp off.

Coral

She turned her back on the man and said to Aendell, "Come, he is no more worthy of our time and attention as he is of his daughter's."

She started back towards the Rusty Dragon.

Aendell

He stands for a moment as the man stomps off, saying softly in response to the Do you know who I am? comment, "Yes I do. A fool. You have a precious gift of a family and you are throwing it away in ignorant pride." He doesn't really care if the man hears him or not, and he turns and walks back to the Inn with Coral.

[OOC:Thought I had done this but apparently not... these long driving days stink... shudder]

While COral and Aendell chase off after the man, Selaim sneaks into the kitchen looking for Ameiko.

"Ameiko? Are you alright?"

Has the matter of Coral in hand, Zak follows Selaim.

"Well," Cat said to herself, as the orphans had scattered after the Kaijitsu clan hither and yon. "A good performer knows what to do after an uncomfortable silence putting people off their meat..."

She took the opportunity to begin trilling an old favorite shanty, often sang on cold nights, because it began slow and quiet, and gathered in ears like the spilling shadows. But it had a hearty chorus following those thin, reedy verses, and it would often lift the spirits of those who stuck with it.

She sang, beginning where she stood, not far from where the altercation had occurred, but soon moved to the hearth, warming herself up as the tune warmed the audience.

Let them forget the cold fury they'd seen, like the storm in the song she thought as she sang, adding a strutting stomp to a jig as the melody picked up. Remind them they're in The Rusty Dragon, one of the best places for the best of times, and maybe they'd remember that some of us sang for our suppers and our souse.

The tune began to gather followers. It started small at first, but soon, most, if not all, were joining in.
