I was never a huge fan, but only because of his style of music, I always respected the genius of the man. Only 57 years old, far too young.

Thing is, the guy really COULD play guitar. He'd sometimes stop into local clubs after a concert and just play guitar. It's surprising how good he was.

There are several other 'guitar players' that are like that. WHen they are doing a show they are one way. When they are 'having fun' they are completely different ... and amazing. Sadly I was never lucky enough to see Prince play that way <sigh>

I saw him one time at a George Harrison memorial concert where Prince just stepped up on the stage with Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Julian Lennon and a couple others whose names escape me at the moment and I swear, he outplayed the group.

Unfortunately it has been a bad year for musicians ... especially blues artists. We lost Lonnie Mac and Otis Clay this month alone. There have been several others this year <sigh>

<sings> the year the music died. so bye bye Miss American pie </sings>

Re: Prince's guitar playing...

This may be apocryphal, but supposedly someone asked Clapton how it felt to be the best guitarist in the world, and Clapton replied, "Don't ask me, ask Prince."

Incredible guitar playing...and a fitting song to highlight.

As I posted elsewhere last night while drinking dark purple wine and listening to a tribute show:

"Still working the loss through my heart and dancing my ass off in respect -- "You sexy mother-f***er!"
