Shadow

Looking behind at the others,

"Burden is alive. Spirit moved to another room, probably where the water is."

Water fascinated him: dipping a paw beneath a dripping tap to see what it felt like was one of the things he did. He hated getting soaked: All that water made cleaning himself unpleasant, not to mention cold. Still, shadows were hard to get wet.

He went towards the sound of water.

Terror

He landed back onto his feet lightly -- well, lightly enough for a 16+ pound feline, anyway. Then he slipped through the open door to see what was in there.

An old burden napping, but no spirit. Terror didn't know what the spirit wanted if it wasn't the burden. He glanced at the others, then when to check the burden to see if he seemed distressed.

Bringer

He followed Terror into the room and sniffed his way around, ending at the old burden, unsure what else he should do. He miao'd softly, questioningly at Terror.

He didn't like this at all. Searching from the floor was so much more difficult. You couldn't really see anything from this low.

But if he could work out where he'd been when he'd looked down from above, he could probably figure where the spirit had gone. If he was right and it had gone back to the same place, that is. The room with the cold, not-quite-stone tiny ponds for silly Burden washing.

Carefully, he thought thru the way the house had looked when he'd looked down from the attic and compared it to what he saw from here to try to lead the others toward the right place.

Bringer

After a moment, Bringer leaped up to where the old burden was lying and, moving carefully, made his way to the burden's head and smelled his breath.

Shadow

He let his ears lead him, where water was, there the spirit may be. He kept his eyes open, and bypassed obstructions as needed.

The old man's breath smells of salt and cheap whisky. Though his breathing is ragged, he still lives.

The sound of water and the smell of salt leads the herd of cats towards one of the doors in the room. Beyond the door which is open enough for a cat to sneak through, is an indoor pond. In this pond the spirit lays, seemingly at peace. It is unaware of the gaggle of ogling.

Shadow

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. He tried to communicate with the otherworldly thing.

"Hello, little spirit. What brings you here?"

Bringer

The big cat jumped down to the floor and followed Shadow to the small, smelly pool.

The spirit seemed to be listening to something else while Shadow spoke. Time passed it appeared not to have heard. Though it turned it's head to look at him. In his head he felt "be gone. This is my place."

Shadow

The enlarged shadow of a cat stood its ground calmly, tail flicking side to side in lazy, insouciant arcs.

"Curious, that you claim territory here where the living are. There is a story there. The price of me being gone is hearing it."

Bringer

Bringer plumped onto his rear, lifted his left forepaw and began grooming it carefully while he listened to see if the spirit would answer.

Having slipped aside to let the bolder cats past at the doorway, Seeker turns his head appreciatively at Shadow's cleverness. That might work. Some spirits were vain enough to tell their weaknesses because they didn't think they could be exploited. And some were stupid enough to blurt out secrets.

He had a partial picture of what might've happened here, but it didn't quite come together yet. If he had the knack for Dreamwalking, he might go back an let the old man tell him something... But he hadn't ever managed it for any useful purposes.

Instead, he looked around the room for anything that didn't look like it was the old man's. He might be able to learn something from an object that used to be the woman's, if he was right and this was the woman's spirit. That might give him the missing bits if the spirit didn't blurt them out.

The spirit looked at the shadowy cat and said "I don't need your permission to be here. This is my house." It wasn't terribly angry, yet it wasn't friendly either.

Shadow

He idly cleaned the interstices of the shadow of his front left paw, then replied,

"Suit yourself. If you don't want me to go, then don't tell me."

Terror

He didn't know what else to do for the bad-smelling burden. He didn't particularly seem to be in distress other than being old, so he kept an eye on him and an ear on the conversation.

"You obtuse bit of mangy fur. I did tell you." The volume over double as it shouted "this is my house, get out, or I will drive you out!" Though it remained in the pool of water with little waves in it now from its exertions.

Shadow

The oversized shadow of a cat drew itself up, casually extending its claws. Inasmuch as a shadow could stand, it stood its ground, radiating an easy facility for violence.

"You are welcome to try, little spirit."

(Trying to intimidate with fight via Dangerous Moves.)

Bringer

Not entirely sure that it was a good move, nevertheless, Bringer moved up just beside and barely behind Shadow and ruffed the fur of his neck, trying to look as ferocious as possible.

Tiger-Lily

Having re-entered the house, the other cats have obviously moved on. However, her head tilts to look up as sounds come from the upper floor.

"We should head for the stairs I think?"

She confirms with Soot before continuing.

"Yes." Her ears tilted in humor though her whiskers stayed alert. "We should see what has happened while we were gone."

This wasn't going well. Bluster wasn't working, and it was starting to seem like the spirit's place was here, not the pool. That didn't make sense, though. If its place was here, why did it leave during the day? Things weren't adding up, which meant he was missing one of the fragments. Like that silly little doll-thing he'd accidentally nudged a week back where the one piece had gone under the shelves and so it couldn't be fit back together. Not that he'd cared about that, but he could suddenly sympathize with his Burden about it.

Water spirit. Claimed to own the house. Looked kind of like in a picture on a water-riding-thing with the old man, so maybe had in life, but died... Died in water? Probably. But how that gets back to the pool and here, still missing. And what to give to get the spirit to leave still depended on that missing bit.

And if a fight started, it probably wouldn't go well. Even the toughest cats can barely scratch spirits without the right secrets. But a water spirit could hurt a cat easily enough.

Seeker found a small table to jump onto even though there wasn't really space, because maybe moving a few things around would find something important. That often happened.

Tiger-Lily

She heads upstairs and follows the sounds towards a particular room. She pauses in the doorway, looking in. She can see Shadow, Terror and Seeker but not the spirit. But the others are looking further into the room...

At Shadow's display the spirit sprang from the indoor pool and sprayed all of the cats in the room and in the door with water, just as Tiger-Lily came alongside.

"Threaten me in my own house," its voice was loud and cavernous. It rattled around the space of the room with something more than actual sound. There was power there, and it could be felt, even if it was fleeting.

The spirit glared down not just at Shadow, more at all of the cats in general.
