However, henceforth every person who dies by my characters' hands will be known as Yung Shen. And I will create elaborate fantasies about the multitude of ways he could die. I worked for 10 hours today without a break (wait! I did get two potty breaks!), but got the information the user needed. I praised the support people at CollegeNet; I did not throw the DBA under the bus. The Dean of the School of Liberal Arts said he appreciated the extra effort I made in getting the classes scheduled. That made me feel a little better. My boss and the CIO have been very supportive through this entire fiasco. But I am drained. I hope the next three months are as dull and boring as Nivek's job. Oh, I know they won't be, because that darn Mokie wants me to recreate his evil SGRG36 report (better that you not know; your brain could melt)... but that might actually turn out to be fun, especially since this time around I actually know what the report is supposed to do. Ah, what a difference 4-1/2 years make! I have spent the last few days de-stressing because I've dreading logging on to see what new disaster was awaiting me here.
Despite the serious flavor of a realistic world this is a game, this is a light entertainment and should always remain such.
My approach to posts is actually very simple. I believe that everyone, with each post is trying to do their best to create enjoyable play for not just themselves but everyone in the group. That no one is trying to make things bad for anyone else.
When it does happen, and it has, I do and have stepped in, and firmly. I do not like doing so.
Only in one case has it ended badly. In all the other cases I believe the folks involved deserve kudos for working through it and moving on.
I also attempt to take a constructive approach to everyone's post. No one is perfect - especially not me - and the linear nature of message based posting cannot mimic the organic nature of occurrences in the real world.
Hiccups will occur.
When it happens I endeavor to find the constructive resolution, not destructive. The default response should not be "delete the post" - that is something only done as a last resort ... the better approach is to say "okay, this is a hiccup, how can we make this work the way it should, the way its meant to, without causing havoc and ill feelings?"
No one likes deleting a post. The quickest way to ensure I don't come back to a thread for a few days or weeks is to make me do it.
Out of sequence is no a reason to delete a post; it can just be ignored until its time comes up - but ignored is a bad word. Perhaps a better way is to let the post stay inactive until he flow of events allows it to become active. If the flow of events end up never allowing the circumstances for the post to occur ... we just deal with it, without prejudice. It becomes just one of those things.
Internal dialogue is fine, just be careful about internalizing issues that prohibit the other player's ability to respond.
All of the stress that's arisen lately could have been solved by a touch of patience and compassion.
I've said this before in other venues, but I am a big believer in the "Big Raft" philosophy.
A long time ago there was a split in Buddhist thinking. Many schools adopted a monastic, introspective approach to enlightenment;meditation was an individual path undertaken in the separate environment of a monastery. While a very valid approach, they became known as the "Little Raft" schools ... every person is drifting on the sea of life upon their own little raft.
The "Big Raft" schools acknowledge that we live in communities, we are not alone, and the attainment of enlightenment cannot be an individual task - one can only reach enlightenment as one helps their neighbors also better their lives. We have to deal with one another. Compassion - looking out for those about you. This we are all on one Big Raft upon the sea of life; we cannot succeed unless everyone on the raft also succeeds.
Roleplaying games are very much like this. Remember, the one OOC rule I ask players is that they need to find a way to make the party work.
If a game like this is to succeed, it takes everyone working together to make it so.
There are no Little Rafts upon The Heartwood.

Unless I hear differently from folks either tonight or Saturday, on Sunday we will be moving forward down the trail, in a general westerly direction ... stopping at the next locale where interesting things are occurring.
You don't have to do this; you can chose to stay, decide on a new destination ... but if so, we need to know.
Bordertown was the next destination of choice.

Tried following along for a while, but am lost now. Got the concept of the Thousand Towers and that once a single Prince gets enough power he invades the Heartwood, and that Romana was to be sacrificed to a demon for a Prince to gain more power. After that I have no clue what is going on. | | | | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 27,287 She of Chaos Moderator | She of Chaos Moderator Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 27,287 | there's something to be said for being a simple country girl.... | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 47,998 Likes: 1 Moderator | Moderator Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 47,998 Likes: 1 | Or asleep | | | | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 7,944 Sower of Insanity Moderator | Sower of Insanity Moderator Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 7,944 | ...and Camelia's mother went to the Thousand Towers to rescue Romana; they got separated, Romana is here, not sure where Madoka is, but for the moment, the Heartwood is safe from invasion from the East. And we should probably make sure Romana stays safe. Her father is ... um ... well, probably worse than a Honey badger. Basically, something she had promised to do, and if she failed, Camelia would have to do it. Mikal was swapping tales with the Horde guys while Daxia, Camelia, Cesare and Dandelion were chatting over by the hearth. Daxia had asked how she came to use the phrase just buying time, as it is a distinctly Dayalan phrase. "You should know that I did not believe my mother used that phrase casually, to describe something as you did. It was not just a concept to her. She was speaking about something in particular. A purpose, a task... Something that happened once and a commitment to 'defend' from then on, one that was hereditary... No Dayalans left in Trundle, and it became the duty of those who came after, to be the ones to keep this promise, this commitment... One that I would have to take up when it was my time... They stole something from a place called the Thousand Towers, and lost it to them again, and all of that came at a cost... Mother would have to pay soon she said, and then it would be my turn. I suppose my whole life has been to make me ready for the day I would have to face the Thousand Towers and buy time." NO TICKLING.
Instead, as noted, she blew in her ear. Anticipation of the response to being touched was in fact the very reason Celi did NOT do that.
So, however she reacted to being awakened by a puff in the ear, that should have been the response we actually got. If it would have been the same -- in other words, it was a lose-lose situation (assuming Celi could not reprogram the Kobayashi Maru) -- that's cool. But I didn't want to suffer abuse for an action I did not take.
Thanks!
Nicki
