Well it certainly makes things more interesting ... but more complicated too <g>

True, that's a definite downside to updating the rules in supplemental books. It makes 5th Ed less approachable and creates a demand for a tidied up new edition.

Contrary to what the commentators have said, it sounds like this actually increases power gaming and min-maxing. You can take the best of any class (Skills, Stats, Abilities, etc) and pile them all on top of each other to create a more powerful 1st level pc than you could before where you were constrained and the abilities/skills/stats were spread out across the different races.

And besides, I like my dwarves as fighters, elves as mages, halflings as thieves, etc. I don't care if its a stereotype.

I find the commentary interesting. It also gives me a tiny bit more hope for DnD The 6th. I was feeling pretty underwhelmed. Like this would be a 5.05 version or something.

So I don't thing the GM Binder stuff is official (but who does that ever stop?)

I gave out the "UA revised ranger" (which, BTW, has been scratched by WOTC) and then a player took the Dread Ambusher build from Tashas and stacked it with the UA ranger. I regretted it the moment I saw how power-gamey it was. Not an issue for me. I have experience with power-gamers (Zeim! et al) and the player gave the PC up after I targeted all his weaknesses and buffed the monsters (power game me, will ya? Bwahahahaha).

Like Zeim, I like strong racial species characteristics. I really don't like multi-class, build your own PCs either. It's what made D&D 3.5 my least favorite version. I speak mostly as a DM. As for 6e, let's see. IMO it's change for the sake of change (make more moolah) and so I shrug.

Yeah, you've got a core base and the only two methods of generating income is to grow the base or to roll out a new version that requires everyone in your base to repurchase the game. Which one sounds more lucrative?

And now, because all the books are only going to be available online, by subscription, when they come up with a new version the old versions will disappear but you'll need to pay.

I hope all is well with Dugan. Is he just taking a break or is there something more to it?

Ask a question about the amulet. If it requires a history roll, I'll ask for such a roll. smile

OOC: Pavel can cast identify as a ritual. 10 minutes is faster than a short rest smile

(OOC - Nep and I have always used the DMG option that a short rest is 10 minutes, not an hour. I suppose you are not?)

OOC: My bad on that... I misread Identify... for some reason was thinking it was a 1hr cast time.

ooc: Zeim, I've actually used the 1 hour rule for a while. And with our last face to face game, I was using gritty reality so a short rest was 8 hours and a long rest 7 days! And the version we were playing that you remember was a 5 minute short rest.

In this game we've been using the standard option.

For reference:
Code
Option Short rest Long rest
Code
Standard 1 hour 8 hours
Epic Heroism 5 minutes 1 hour
Gritty Realism 8 hours 7 days

(OOC - Good to know, although I am fairly sure when we played Phandelver and we shared a Warlock PC that we were using less than 1 hour short rest...... <g>)

[OOC: It may have changed over time, but I am pretty sure we had a short rest at 10 minutes.]

(OOC - Yes, that was what I remembered too. The main impacts of less time for a short rest are a big benefit to Warlocks (of which we have none currently), and being able to identify magic items and use healing dice faster. Otherwise not much difference.)

OOC: outside of combat we haven’t really been tracking time much.

But I don’t think it’s right to completely eliminate any benefit of the (class limited) Identify spell as ritual by making the same thing possible by anyone in the same amount of time.
