He watched the human pick up crockery and set it up as improvised alarms. Not something he would have expected, but definitely worthy of approval. He silently inclined his head to the druid in an approximation of the human gesture.
He held position: The scouts needed room and quiet to work. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,016 Likes: 2 Moderator | Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 18,016 Likes: 2 | DM With Whisper scouting up ahead, Jaliera knows that there are no immediate threats. The owl is perceptive but there is nobody here to perceive. There are doors to the left and to the right. Grateful for the lack of sound from behind her that gives her every chance to hear any movement ahead, she sends Whisper further down the corridor then signals silently to Bern that she is moving forward. Staying as quiet and unobtrusive as she can, she moves forward slowly her eyes scanning for any signs of traps - cracks, holes, wires anything unusual at all. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,168 Likes: 5 Member | Member Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,168 Likes: 5 | <Bern>
He followed silently behind Jaliera, keeping a distance, but keeping a line of fire. He held up where he could cover her and the door to the east. He didn't expect there to be any real threat from the 'secret' entrance to the north, but was happy for her to confirm that while he watched the door.

But it's Bern that takes notice of a sound. It's coming from behind the door to the north-east of where he is. He hears hushed voices and the feint sound of someone moving around beyond that door. Then there was utter silence again. He quickly determined that there were people lying in wait for them there.

He got Jalieria's attention and pointed at his ear and then to the door. Then he had an interesting thought. He made walking motions with his fingers, then pointed back the way they had come. It might be time for a conference.
He stands, covering the door while Jalieria makes her way back ... =if= she agrees to back off for now.

She nods, recalls Whisper rather than leave her at risk and heads back to tell the others what they know.

Once Jaliera is back, he slips back to the main room as well.
"They are behind the door north of here", he said quietly. "Clearly ready for us there, so that way ... now ... is not a good plan. Some things to consider. We can look for another way in that may not be as well guarded. Maybe make some noise elsewhere and then come back here. In any event, the longer we make them wait, the more jittery, the less ready they will be. Happy to entertain suggestions or alternatives", he finished.

The old monk leans in; still can't hear. Leans in further; that's better.
So, unknown ambushers behind the door across the passageway to the east, and at least one of their runaway goblins lurking in the cluttered vestibule to the north.
The monk tip-toes around the door to take a peek.
"Hmm. Lot of loose stone around that east door." He mumbles almost to himself.
Then he pushes an outward facing palm in the direction of the rubble, where the stone wall appears to be crumbling. A bit more crumbling might just obstruct the door.

He was content to let others figure out their path through the fortress. Evocation Level: 0 Casting Time: 1 action Range: 60 feet Components: S Duration: Varies
You can briefly control elemental forces nearby, causing one of the following effects of your choice:
Create a harmless, instantaneous sensory effect related to air, earth, fire, or water, such as a shower of sparks, a puff of wind, a spray of light mist, or a gentle rumbling of stone. Instantaneously light or snuff out a candle, a torch, or a small campfire. Chill or warm up to 1 pound of nonliving material for up to 1 hour. Cause earth, fire, water, or mist that can fit within a 1-foot cube to shape itself into a crude form you designate for 1 minute.
Which effect and what is it you're trying to do? Blocking the door, with a 1 foot cube of rock for 1 minute is effectively a temporary doorstop.)

"I thought we agreed earlier that we're doing a full sweep here, not to let any remain up here to trap us when we eventually find the way down to the caves? If that's still the case, then we have a little bit of an advantage knowing where they are, right? Sooo... I could do my flame sphere again, burn down the door like Kriv says, and then just push it through into the room. Once it clears the doorway we enter and take them all out." | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,072 Likes: 9 Wobbly Headed Administrator | Wobbly Headed Administrator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 13,072 Likes: 9 | [Hi Zeim. Loose stone around the doorway shifts and rumbles slightly. The door remains closed, however and if any are waiting there they seem to still be waiting.

He considered the options. "If you can keep that fire sphere of yours going that long", he said to Davroar, "that seems a decent plan."

"The flaming sphere sounds like a good plan, if they can't run from it. At a bare minimum it would allow us to get into the room with a source of light." | | | | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,229 Likes: 9 (Buffalo) Moderator | OP (Buffalo) Moderator Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 22,229 Likes: 9 | (OOC - Neal - Yes it does dislodge some rock, but 1 cubic foot of loose rubble doesn't cause much collapsing. There are slabs of rock here several feet around. It is unlikely you'll be able to create a hole in the wall with anything short of a Rock to Mud or Stoneshape spell. Davroar's idea of burning down the door could work, although it is also likely to fill the area with smoke. Every plan has it's pluses and minuses <g>)
