"Too many of them! Fire might keep them away!"

But he does not want to stop shooting them, desperate that none should reach him. He aims and fires, again and again.

Moving to flank his friend, he took up position and the advice of Nic and began cocking and firing his bolt action rifle as rapidly as possible, reloading in clips of five shells when necessary.

If he hadn't seen far worse than this recently, he might have frozen in place.

"Stay close and back up. We can't turn our back on these things. Fire as needed, but don't waste all our ammo." he said backing up, rifle at the ready.

If he didn't have a bayonet on his rifle, he'd attach it now.

With three figures heading towards you (Clement, your guide and the two German soldiers a few footsteps behind him accurate firing becomes a lot trickier since there is a real danger of hitting one or more of the approaching figures. The sustained fire finds their mark on no more than two or three of the creatures this time, not nearly enough given the numbers that had arrived moments before.

Now thankfully up on his feet and moving, one hand held to the left side of his head covering a wound Clement blurts out something this time (and unusually) in English, although with your ears still aching from initial explosion and the equally loud cracks of rifle fire amplified by the tunnels you stand in all you manage to make out are the words

“….back……….they……….seal!”

The two Germans, apparently either oblivious to who you are in the quarter light, muzzle flash filled passage or otherwise not caring break into a fast run moving to either side of the caverns closest to the walls and by the looks of things aiming otherwise aiming for the gaps between your group.

The creatures ahead of you, still somewhat disorganised after their sudden mass arrival seem to have their attention torn now between the figures ahead of them and the hole in the cave wall where they had emerged on masse.

They collectively seem to choose the same option, those not down or otherwise dispatched by incoming fire surging forward like a living carpet of abhorrent darkness up the passageway towards you. There are easily 20 or more of the creatures now, with the steady arrival of yet more stragglers from the hole in the passage wall popping out in ones and two’s again with great speed.

"Shit! I think it's time to go gentlemen." he said firing off another shot.

Unless they said otherwise, he turned and ran at a full sprint.

His head moved as if mounted on a swivel when Aaron shouted his warning and he glanced at his other friend to make sure what he planned to do.

"I'm with you," he said, gestured for Nic to join them and then took off running behind the other two, having a hard time to keep up with their speed while he tried to serve as rear guard at the same time.

He doesn't need any encouragement and turns and runs, hoping that the others show the same sense.

Collectively the group including the two new additions backtracks at as fast as is possible towards the large chamber which had previously split the passage way in two.

Initially pursuing you as if the very hordes of hell were behind you the rat-like creatures come very close to catching you, Summers being the rear guard of the retreated resorting to swinging the butt end of this rifle like a club in a great arching circle to stop the lead creatures either moving past him or launching themselves at him as you run.

As quickly as it started the pursuit slows, not from outrunning the back of things behind you but because they begin to slow. As you each pass the entrance to into the gallery chamber there is no sign of a single pursuing creature, only noise and the regular flash of sickly yellow eyes in your torchlight indicates they are still there.

Quite ready to continue their retreat the two Germans stop only when Claude, out of breath and slumping down back first against the nearest wall calls out to them in German to stop – no translation needed in this instance, the echoing words ‘Halt!’ instinctively bringing the two men to a stop. Realising their new situation quickly and now with only one rifle between them they raise their hands, surrendering with confused almost shell shocked looks on their faces.

“Its worse than I thought” heaves Claude in French as he tries to recover his breath and speak at the same time “there is no way out through there now, not with the other passage blocked as well.”

He is just relieved that the rat creatures are not attacking and that the Germans seem to have surrended. He keeps a rifle pointed in their general direction just in case.

"So? What options do we have?"

He replies to Claude in french.

He was breathing hard and was surprised that they had managed to escape the rat monsters. His breathing relaxing somewhat, he lifted his rifle and backed his friend up in covering the Boche.

“We go back to the town” replies Claude to Millbrook, this time in plain albeit heavily accented English “both passages to the caves beyond are now impassable, the creatures you saw are a result of..”

He pauses clearly searching for the right word

“a result of ritual – they won’t come past the seals above each of the archways” he continues, pointing at the carvings engraved into the rock above each of the two passage way entrances you had now tried “but I suspect our German friends there probably disturbed them or opened up something that should have been left closed. Either way, the only path out of here now is back the way you came that brought you to our town. In the other direction lies no man’s land or worse, which is why I wanted you to leave before it was too late.”

Your new German friends, still a little bewildered and on the surface at least having no understanding of either English or French are having a brief and whispered conversation of their own, stopping only when they realise you are paying more attention to them now than to Claude.

Apart from what little equipment they are still carrying (which on appearances seems to relate far more to mining or spelunking than it does to soldiery) they are not showing any signs of hostility although the tone of their voices indicates that they see their circumstances as somewhat dire.

(OOC – to understand what they are staying your characters will need to have the German language skill).

These language issues might be a problem, so he replies in English and then repeats in French.

"Tell us more about these rituals and why it might be 'too late' for us?"

Then continuing in English he asks "Anyone speak German? I can do Spanish, Italian, & Dutch but not German."

Keeping his rifle in one hand, he hold up his other hand palm facing towards the Germans hoping they will interpret the 'wait' signal. He adds a smile to try to diffuse the situation further.

He really wasn't sure he wanted to hear about this ritual. Flashbacks to that guy in the inn and that abomination in the book was enough to not want any more.

"German? Not a single word."

"Should we go back up? Hopefully the fact that we haven't shot these guys will buy us some time with their friends. All I know for sure is that I believe this guy when he says we can't go down either of these tunnels and right now, I'd like to see the sky."

Phil rolled his eyes briefly upward.

"I have trouble sometimes with English," he said and shrugged, chuckling sardonically.

"I know a little Spanish and a few words of German, but not enough to hold a decent conversation."

He looked around at the others.

"I was a history major."

The Germans show no signs of causing any trouble and are wholly compliant with gestures of commands given that they can immediately understand. The do keep looking back down the tunnel you had just escaped from and their eyes automatically return to that direction if they are not listening to your group.

A slow smile creeps over Claude’s face as he listens to the group conversation

“I believe our German companions are worried that you are going to interrogate them and torture them if they don’t comply” he replies in English “and I believe they are part of a unit that you would call ‘Sappers’ - tunnel digging. I suspect they probably don’t want you to know what they were doing down here but its unlikely to be anything good. More reason to head back to the town.”

With may German words having a similar sound or annunciation to those in English there appears to be some truth in what Claude is suggesting, ‘Tunnel’ being the same word in both languages however the tone of their previous conversation suggests this is likely only part of it.

Having now recovered Claude stands up and gestures to the opening that lead back the way you had originally come. He looks at Summers for a moment with a degree of immediate interest as he walks.

“You are a historian?” he asks “I teach history at the school here – well used to. I like historians, especially those who understand the past and learn from it. That’s what this place is about, a history of a circumstances that most of humanity unaware of. A history that here, keeps repeating itself.”

Again the Frenchman failed to provide the information he requested. Perhaps Phil will get more out of him.

He gesture to the Germans to move ahead and follow the others. He intends to bring up the rear.

"Yes, I studied history in college," he replied to Claude, but I haven't been all that active in that area lately.

He glanced over at the apprehensive looking Germans.

"We really don't have time to torture them at the moment, even if we had the inclination."

"And, while we're at it," he said, frowning a bit at Claude.

"What did you mean my too late for us?

He had no German in his repertoire. French and English only so he kept silent. Like the Germans, he continued to keep looking behind him. The last thing he wanted was to find those creatures coming at him unseen.
