He took a step back and fired at the one that was further from the door ...

Bern shoot ghoul MikeD rolled d20+8,d8+3 and got 17, 8

Ryssa

Hearing the call from Jaliera, Ryssa turned and ran back in the direction from which he thought she'd heard the warning. As she ran, the cleric willed her new found mace to emit light.

Once close enough to see the ghouls, she called out for the Morninglord, her deity, to remove these monstrosities from their way.

ooc: MikeD, unlike previous 3.5/4e edition, there is no "step back". It would trigger an opportunity attack - from BOTH ghouls. Are you sure you don't want to just roll to hit at disadvantage or to use your sword?

Exeter, by my calculation you will not be able to turn them until the 3rd round at least

MikeD - Yes. As Nep stated in his reply, if you use your bow while there is an enemy adjacent to you (even if you fire at someone else who is not adjacent) all your attacks are at Disadvantage. So you can use your bow at Disadvantage, or drop your bow, pull out your sword, and attack with it normally.

ooc: There are 2 options:
1) Drop the bow, use the sword and your odds to hit go down 15% (As the status says, they're AC 12)
2) Shoot close range at disadvantage. Roll 2 separate attack rolls and use the worst roll.

I didn't do the math to figure out which is your best bet, but I do know you would have hit with the sword. Is the damage roll the same?

Davroar

Not these things again he thinks, as the one ghoul misses him with its claws. He will then cast Shillelagh on his staff and strikes the ghoul.

Davorar Attack ghoul with shilleagh staff
Dugan rolled 1d20+7 and got 24
Davorar damages ghoul with shilleagh staff
Dugan rolled 1d8 and got 7

Chandan

He rushes to the aid of Bern and Davroar, a flurry of ragged clothes, trailing a yellow silken scarf. His spear is held point forward, eager to skewer. (Exactly what, he isn't sure.)

[I've double moved in Roll20.]

[[ Actually I forgot to add the +1 for the magic arrow in my initial roll. So using the sword, it would be d20+6 (so 15 to hit) and the damage would remain at d8+3 (so 8 damage) ]]

The druid and the ranger battled the unnatural ghouls as best they could. Both struck blows that harmed their assailants but it would take more than one strike to fell these foes. In the chaos of battle the ghouls both try to dig their claws into their prey but neither are able to do so.

Ghoul-1 attack Bern with claws
Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 12, 10

Ghoul-2 attack Davroar with claws
Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 5, 10

Code
Init AC MaxHP HDU Dam Senses/Conditions

Chandan 23 17 38 6
Ryssa 22 16/18* 43 3
Whisper 20 11 1
 Ghoul-1 19 12 22 8
 Ghoul-2 19 12 22 8
Jaliera 18 14 28 4
Davroar - 12 36 1 6
Bern 16 15 49 1 Has light 20/20
Kriv 13 16 36 2 Has light 20/20
Luminmorn 16 18 37 1 2 Has light 20/20

We need to get Kriv and Ryssa moved on the Roll20 map, but that shouldn't slow us down. Davroar and Bern get their 2nd round attacks.

Kriv

The Dragonborn acted as rearguard, vigilant in case the noise of battle attracted attention from those they had been about to fight.

OOC: Gypsy, the only way that Whisper can distract the ghouls is to make herself a target. Is that what you're asking? I say this because at 13th level your mage hand becomes a "distraction". While it doesn't protect you or someone in melee with the target of distraction, it penalizes the target's defense.

Quote

VERSATILE TRICKSTER
At 13th level, you gain the ability to distract targets with your mage hand. As a bonus action on your turn, you can designate a creature within 5 feet of the spectral hand created by the spell. Doing so gives you advantage on attack rolls against that creature until the end of the turn.

And although we've not used the optional flanking rules, they too only provide advantage on attack rolls. None of these strategies "protects" you or an ally.

Note: After Davroar goes, everyone can do another double move and position yourselves for attacks in the 3rd round.

Davroar

He strikes the ghoul again, thanking the gods that this thing has not paralyzed him yet.

Davroar Attack ghoul with shilleagh staff
Dugan rolled 1d20+7 and got 21

Davroar Attack ghoul with shilleagh staff
Dugan rolled 1d8 and got 1

[OOC Jaliera would sacrifice Whisper to save Davroar. Of course she really hopes both will survive. Shame she's not 13th level! grin ]

Whisper flutters around the ghouls, hoping to distract them, making herself a target but the ghouls were interested in the large, living things. Spirit creatures did not smell the same to them. The fact that those living things, Bern and Davroar kept managing to harm them did little to stop the ghouls who were driven by an insatiable hunger. They continue to claw at the humans and once again Bern feels the sting of a foul claw rip into his flesh and once more a sickening shiver runs through him.

Code
Init AC MaxHP HDU Dam Senses/Conditions

Chandan 23 17 38 6
Ryssa 22 16/18* 43 3
Whisper 20 11 1
 Ghoul-1 19 12 22 16
 Ghoul-2 19 12 22 9
Jaliera 18 14 28 4
Davroar - 12 36 1
Bern 16 15 49 1 13 Has light 20/20
Kriv 13 16 36 2 Has light 20/20
Luminmorn 16 18 37 1 2 Has light 20/20

We are now at the top of round 3. Based on tactical positions, many of the PC's can reach the melee without having an action they can do. So the ghouls will go.

Ghoul-1 attacks Bern with claws
Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 18, 7

Ghoul-2 attacks Davroar with claws
Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 5, 6

Bern needs to make another DC 10 Con save or be paralyzed for a minute.

Ryssa

Wielding her new found magic mace, Ryssa moved into place close, but just behind Bern and Davroar. Pausing, she willed the mace to direct the light of the Morninglord toward the ghouls and then she swung the mace at the ghoul closest to the ranger.

Ryssa attacks ghoul
1d20+2, 1d8+2 = 9,7
