Damn!
The thought flashed through his head. He =had= been right. It =had= been a mistake to split up.
He took a step back and fired at the one that was further from the door ...

Hearing the call from Jaliera, Ryssa turned and ran back in the direction from which he thought she'd heard the warning. As she ran, the cleric willed her new found mace to emit light.
Once close enough to see the ghouls, she called out for the Morninglord, her deity, to remove these monstrosities from their way. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,954 Likes: 1 Moderator | OP Moderator Joined: May 2000 Posts: 17,954 Likes: 1 | ooc: MikeD, unlike previous 3.5/4e edition, there is no "step back". It would trigger an opportunity attack - from BOTH ghouls. Are you sure you don't want to just roll to hit at disadvantage or to use your sword?
Exeter, by my calculation you will not be able to turn them until the 3rd round at least

As Nep stated in his reply, if you use your bow while there is an enemy adjacent to you (even if you fire at someone else who is not adjacent) all your attacks are at Disadvantage. So you can use your bow at Disadvantage, or drop your bow, pull out your sword, and attack with it normally. | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,106 Likes: 5 Member | Member Joined: May 2000 Posts: 42,106 Likes: 5 | [[ you guys spoil everything <chuckle> So assume he used his sword ... so the 16 becomes 13 to hit :-/ ]]

Roll 2 separate attack rolls and use the worst roll.
I didn't do the math to figure out which is your best bet, but I do know you would have hit with the sword. Is the damage roll the same?

Not these things again he thinks, as the one ghoul misses him with its claws. He will then cast Shillelagh on his staff and strikes the ghoul.

He rushes to the aid of Bern and Davroar, a flurry of ragged clothes, trailing a yellow silken scarf. His spear is held point forward, eager to skewer. (Exactly what, he isn't sure.)

Both struck blows that harmed their assailants but it would take more than one strike to fell these foes. In the chaos of battle the ghouls both try to dig their claws into their prey but neither are able to do so. Ghoul-1 attack Bern with claws Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 12, 10
Ghoul-2 attack Davroar with claws Neptune rolled 1d20+4,2d4+2 and got 5, 10

Is that what you're asking? I say this because at 13th level your mage hand becomes a "distraction". While it doesn't protect you or someone in melee with the target of distraction, it penalizes the target's defense.
VERSATILE TRICKSTER At 13th level, you gain the ability to distract targets with your mage hand. As a bonus action on your turn, you can designate a creature within 5 feet of the spectral hand created by the spell. Doing so gives you advantage on attack rolls against that creature until the end of the turn.
And although we've not used the optional flanking rules, they too only provide advantage on attack rolls. None of these strategies "protects" you or an ally.
Note: After Davroar goes, everyone can do another double move and position yourselves for attacks in the 3rd round.

Spirit creatures did not smell the same to them. The fact that those living things, Bern and Davroar kept managing to harm them did little to stop the ghouls who were driven by an insatiable hunger. They continue to claw at the humans and once again Bern feels the sting of a foul claw rip into his flesh and once more a sickening shiver runs through him.

We are now at the top of round 3. Based on tactical positions, many of the PC's can reach the melee without having an action they can do. So the ghouls will go.

Wielding her new found magic mace, Ryssa moved into place close, but just behind Bern and Davroar. Pausing, she willed the mace to direct the light of the Morninglord toward the ghouls and then she swung the mace at the ghoul closest to the ranger.
