So what does everyone think of the new genre shows premiering this fall?

Orville - Won't last long.

The Inhumans - the same. A couple of decent actors and some that come off like cardboard.

The Gifted - The best of the lot. Predictable but I liked it.

Any other shows?

Well it isn't this fall, but I just watched a summer show Midnight, Texas. I loved it. Predictable, somewhat trite plot choices, but still enjoyable.

I agree Orville sucks, which is too bad, I had hopes. Haven't tried the others.

I happen to like the Orville. But that doesn't have to mean anything either. IMO i see the homage being paid to the Star Trek 'sub genre' of scifi by a loving fan... But also the ability to recognize the flaws and by poking some fun. It is designed to have a stronger comedic element than the template. Last week's episode of the scene i dub 'awkward elevator banter' is an example.

I have no idea how long it will last but since it is on Fox, it will probably have it's run order shuffled to the point where the main story arc can't be presented properly and then cancelled halfway through one season with a couple episodes left unaired.

(Firefly bitter much?)

I am disappointed in the inhumans. Acting is uneven and the CGI is a little sloppy(especially around the red hair). Some decent character actors in this group and that usually means the writers are the weaker link. It seems like they disregard part of the canon established in SHIELD where the teragenesis creates a cocoon before revealing the the new inhuman. Maybe there is a detail element i am missing or hasn't been explained yet... but it bothered me. I did hear the mention that the moon inhumans are more full blooded than the ones descended of those left behind that we see in SHIELD. This is the one I see failing.

I liked the Gifted quite a bit. predictable? sure... but it's Marvel. We know what to expect and know when they deviate. But the action was well paced and the predictable mutant hunting father of the mutant children is a trope, it is still effective as creating an emotional connection

and Midnight was just a plain fun show.

this season seems to be rife with military drama procedurals... brave, seal team, valor, and season 2 of Taken. Not all of them will survive but seeing so many is indicative of where TV producers hope to find audiences. Taken is undergoing a major cast shuffle and reboot for s2, although i enjoyed season 1 it just wasn't exactly brian mills and his particular set of skills- new showrunner promises more focus on the early days of that particular set of skills. I have seen the pilot for Brave and liked it a lot- very tense all the way through and each scene was quick and decisive with them telling the story in these quick hits. If they can keep this pace up and still deliver characters we can find relatable then this will be a hit (IMO)

just some of my thoughts- your mileage may vary

My take...

LOVED Midnight Texas. Predictable but so much guilty fun.

Orville might survive, it is better than I expected. I did not expect much.

Inhumans... just as bad as I had feared, but... the red hair was done a lot better than I thought they would do (I had really low expectations).

Gifted... will watch this weekend when I have time.

I am looking forward to Superstition though.

Reading peoples comments and I will have to give Gifted another look. as I only caught half of the second show.

I am also enjoying Orville. I like its tongue in cheek style. Sort of reminds me of the old Quark TV show. I hope it lasts, but agree that it will probably not.

Watching Orville and the Gifted. I like both. They are still ongoing and I'll keep following.

I want to add something to the mix, Stranger Things 2. Just wow. I basically just spent the last 9 hours binge-watching. It was worth every minute. When they pull out the 1st edition Monster Manual, I had this huge smile on my face. I won't give any of it away, but if you have Netflix, block off a day.

We don't have the Orville here in the UK but I very much want to see it.

From what i've seen its everything that the new Star Trek Discovery isn't. That and I understand Brannon Bragga (sp) is one of the lead writers and he has considerable form in that respect.

Don't get me started on Star Trek Discovery - it may look and sound like Star Trek, use all the Trekkie words and have all the Trek visuals but to me its just not Star Trek.

I just saw the season finale of The Orville last night and I've got to say that it one of the best SciFi episodes I've seen in a very, very long time. Lots of folks have panned the series, and I admit that the first couple of episodes were campy. It seemed like they couldn't decide if the series should be SciFi or RomCom. But I stuck with it and it paid off big time.

Without getting too much into spoiler territory, the episode dealt with what happens if futuristic explorers (a member of the crew) contaminates a bronze-age society with tech. It was very well done and crossed some lines that I could see some people might not like.
