OOC: The mage hand is the single most annoying thing to a DM (which makes it Uber-fun for the player smile )

At higher levels you can use it to distract an opponent at range. That gives you advantage on your range/bow attacks. That give you your sneak damage. You can pick locks and remove traps at a distance which means that if you fail, you do so out of range of the trap. Would you like to pick pockets? Sure, go ahead. Let's say you're in a jail cell. The guard falls asleep. Moments later the key is in your hands. Go ahead and abuse the cantrip. Take your DM to the edge. Let's see how much you get away with ... legally.

Sorting through the pile, Jaliera finds, beneath the rubble covering, a large chest. It is made of wood, banded with metal, and while it has a latch for a padlock, there currently doesn't seem to be one.

She doesn't detect any traps present.

Ryssa

Deciding to trust the gesture of the newfound companion, Ryssa moves through the door and up close to Jaliera.

"What have you found? Oh... a chest!"

While he wondered what might be inside the chest, he kept his attention ... and his bow ... mostly up, in case the owner of the chest decided to return.

Chandan

With the nearby bushes subdued, Chandan wanders back along the dirt path. He nods genially to Luminmorn and notices that the archer, Bern, has gone inside.

The old monk has confidence in Davroar, Jaliera and Kriv and doesn't suspect their new companions of any mischief. It's fortuitous that the two parties found each other, but perhaps inevitable if they're both seeking the same thing, the rescue of Gundren the Dwarf.

It's been a long time since Chandan's conducted sky burial rites, not since he left his mountain and his old self behind. It reminds him the great calm and inner peace that he once had, and how he has lost it.

Now, only two things bring him that same feeling. The miraculous beverages brewed, distilled and fermented by the good peoples of Faerûn, and standing in harm's way to protect the innocent.

But he does miss his mountain, and the vista of mountains. The Yehimals, the World Pillars, vast, magnificent and mysterious. He misses the soaring vultures, and the giants of stone, fire, cloud and storm. But the raw elements of nature he cannot miss, they're around him always.

Breathing deeply, Chandan plants his spear in the ground and stands on one leg, resting his other foot on the inside of his thigh. The tree stance.

He meditates on the rustling of leaves, the dripping of water and the touch of the sun on his skin.

A nice chest. Maybe her mentor would like it? But carrying it might be a problem. Anyway the contents are likely to be of most interest to her companions, so after checking it, she gently raises the lid.

Opening the chest reveals a number of different items embedded in a large pile of mixed coins. Detecting no traps. Jaliera is able to remove the items by digging thru the coinage and make a rough count of the coins as she does so.

For simplicity, here is the list of loot:

800sp
150gp
4 Silver Goblets set with moonstones (60gp each)
2 Scrolls (#1-Misty Step, #2-Lightning Bolt)
An old, rusty looking Battleaxe

Davroar

Standing a few paces away still, he lets out a silent sigh of relief when nothing bad happens as Jaliera opens the chest.

"Strange that a large dragon would keep its treasure in a single chest, but at least it makes it easier to carry it out. Probably stolen from somewhere else."

Looking around and seeing no more chests he adds, "Let's take it and get out of here..."

Jaliera

As always she warms when she hears Davroar's voice and she turns to him with a smile.

"Maybe this is only a small part of its hoard. If I could fly long distances, I might hide my treasures in more than one place. But yes, let's get this out of here."

She places the items gently back on top and closes the lid, ready to help Davroar carry it outside.

He is not ready to give up his role as lookout/guard ... now is the most dangerous time. The others wold be busy with 'punishing' the dragon by taking what it most cherished.

Ryssa

"That is a possibility," Ryssa mused as she looked around the circular room.

"It doesn't seem all that much of a treasure hoard for a dragon."

She shrugged.

"Maybe it was a young dragon."

Davroar

"Good points. It probably flew off to recover its wounds at another lair."

Quickly he grabs one end of the chest to help carry it out.

Ryssa

Ryssa slung her bow and her shield on her back and moved to take the other end of the chest.

"Let's lift together now. I'm not the strongest cleric in the world, but I can handle my share of the load."

Jaliera

She smiles at the cleric as she moves to share the load.

"There is another possibility. Maybe we are meant to think this is all there is. There could be more hidden or invisible. Let's get this outside and then I'll pop back and do a proper search."

Wouldn't take too long and best to be thorough.

The chest is easily carried outside with all the people available to help. Jaliera goes back inside and spends some time searching but finds nothing else other than the remains of what seems to be a former Wizard's Tower, i.e. bedroom and living room furniture, lab equipment, and so forth, all broken and demolished.

Perhaps it was a young green dragon, either just starting a new lair or setting up multiple lairs? After all, you drove it off fairly easily and the Druid, Reidoth, did tell Luminmorn, Ryssa, and Bern that it had only recently taken up residence in the tower.

Speaking of which, having driven off Venomfang means that Luminmorn, Ryssa, and Bern have completed their agreement with the Druid Reidoth. He had already provided the location of Cragmaw Castle (and Kriv, Chandan, Jaliera, and Davroar got the same information from the Red Wizard near the Old Owl Well), but he had also agreed to guide you to Wave Echo Cave if you drove away the dragon. He should be waiting for you back near Phandalin.

So, at this point it is time to split up the newfound treasure, and for the group to make a decision. While you have not completely compared notes, between the two groups you have completed all of the requests/missions that were provided to you by people you met in Phandalin. However the main mission, finding Gundren, finding Wave Echo Cave, and stopping the Spider remain.

All of your information indicates Gundren may be at Cragmaw Castle...........

(OOC - Please give me a thumbs up if you have completed the leveling up process or need to PM me with questions before we proceed)

[Levelled like a boss.

And how's this for a split?

Bern, Dav, Ryssa: 266 sp, 50 gp
Bern, Dav, Chan, Ryssa: 1 jewelled silver goblet worth 60 gp
Kriv: Rusty Axe of Special Value to Dragon
Jaliera: Lightning Bolt Scroll, plus Staff of Defence (reallocated from Kriv)?
Luminmorn: Misty Step Scroll

AJ, don't know how you feel about passing on the staff. Might keep things simple, and then iirc Jal, Kriv and Lu will have a magic melee weapon?

[Zeim, in 5e, assuming we're about to have a short rest, doesn't the new owner get to identify it just by fondling it and saying "Phwoar!" like Sid James?]

Yes, however that uses up your short rest, so you can't also use it for regaining hps.

(OOC - We'll assume he did then:

The rust on the Battleaxe belies it's true nature. It is actually a +1 Battleaxe and has dwarven runes engraved on the blade (let me know if anyone reads dwarven). This Battles axe does maximum damage against plant creatures or anything made of wood. Kriv (or whoever spends the time identifying it) feels uneasy when they stand next to the heavily wooded hilltop.)
