Satisfied that they have dealt with the problems here, "We should turn these over to the town's officials", he said indicating their prisoners. "And then I think we should see about tracking down this 'Black Spider' fellow."

"I am satisfied that we have ended the Redbrand threat. It seems like a good plan." He agreed.

He nodded as well.

"I agree. Let us head back to town with our captives and return these poor people to their friends. I could use a good night's sleep and something to drink."

(OOC - Ken - Note that in order for you to learn the specifics of the Staff you must spend time "Attuning" yourself to it. That means your spending a short rest concentrating on the item and studying it while holding it.)

"Hey, before we go anywhere, let's relax a bit with our friend the wizard here and see if we've learned all we need to learn from him. Might I suggest we retire to the room where there was some good booze ooc: room 10 and cards. We can take a short rest there and talk to Iarno before we turn him over to the officials."

ooc: Metagaming here a bit - on request from our DM. Zeim and I both know that this party hasn't asked the right questions yet and that would be a big fail. I've held back so as to not lead this group by the nose-ring. In this type of forum it's easy to forget what was found and what you're looking for because of the long time between activities. You've been in the town for a day in game time but have been playing here for a year in real time. I would focus on things we've found here. A good idea would be to take the short rest and use that time to attune to the staff too.

He nodded "seems reasonable. If he answers our questions then we can do more for life. If he doesn't then there is no reason to believe that others will gain more from him. In addition he may get away because of his powerful friends." He made no comment about it being tempting to beat on the man that caused so much misery.

=His= first priority was to get out of this place and move on. But apparently some of the others were not so inclined, he thought with a sigh. "If he doesn't talk, we =could= just pass judgement and execute him now", he suggested. It seemed like a win/win. If he talked, maybe something useful would come, if not, they wouldn't have to haul him back.

Ryssa

Ryssa frowned for a long moment, lightly chewing her the inside of her left cheek as she thought, and then nodded.

"I could use the rest... and questioning this mage sounds like a good idea to me."

"I for one would like to know about the... the Spider."

"Then let's go there."

The halfling started to move without waiting for the others. He was headed for the chamber where the guards were getting drunk while playing cards. It seemed like a good place to rest.

"By the way, when we decide to kill the wizard, can I do it. Pleeeezzzeee? I learned this technique about how to kill a man really slowly by peeling his skin. I want to give it a try. Can I? Pleeeezzzeee?" By the eager look on his face it was difficult to tell if he was just trying to scare the man or if he really meant it.

When they all finally settled in the room, Lingo barked at the wizard "Sit in this chair NOW!"

"I guess that depends on how cooperative our friend is", he replied to Lingo sounding serious, but adding a wink their captive couldn't see.

The cleric frowned down at the rogue, cocking her head slightly to one side as she - not for the first or second or 5th time - tried to decide whether Lingo was serious or not. Finally, she sighed, rolled her eyes briefly ceilingward and shrugged her shoulders.

She'd probably never be able to read him accurately, but she could live with that.

The party is able to easily walk to the guard room, bringing Iarno with them as well as their other three prisoners. The three townsfolk followed along, although they gave alarmed looks when Lingo started talking about skinning the Wizard and are staying away from him.

Iarno, for his part, seems quite cooperative, if a bit haughty. He offers no resistance, as if he isn't that worried.

The tiny man walks next to Ryssa as they march towards the guard room, "You know that letter we found in his room, the one signed by a spider? Do you want me to pry the info from him or do you think I might be too tough?" As he walks, he balances the point of a dagger on his forefinger. "I've been told that I'm not sensitive."

Ryssa

Ryssa frowned down at the little man, but could not withstand his irrepressible personality. She smiled and patted his shoulder.

"You probably could use a bit more uh... diplomacy. You know, tact."

She paused and thought.

"But perhaps that very lack of subtlety could benefit us. We could try a good interrogator - bad interrogator team. You threaten, I soothe. What do you think?"

She did very much want to know more about the spider.

"I was being tactful," he said with that impossible to read face. His voice was a whisper and he made sure that there was separation between them and the balances of the group so that Iarno would not overhear.

"But I get it. So the best way for this to work is for us to start arguing," he whispered back. "We continue talking quietly now, as if we are discussing something. Then I raise my voice and you be the nice calm voice."

Then he started to talk in a voice that was calm but loud enough to be hear.

"Look. I don't care about being nice. He's evil and that means we can kill him if we want. He took these people as slaves and killed their father and husband. They won't be upset! Let me try to melt his foot with a torch. I'll get him to spill it!"

It was a close call, he understood what Lingo was going for, but still it was all he could do to keep from chuckling as he went into his 'act'.

"It is possible, indeed, my friend, that he has done evil things," she said, giving Lingo a wink she was sure Iarno couldn't see, "but we do not know what events might have driven him to such excesses of behavior."

She glanced at the bound wizard, gave him a brief, rather weak smile, and then turned back to the rogue.

"He deserves a chance to... repent and do penance for any misdoings."

The halfling became visibly angry now. His venomous glare at Iarno was followed by a measured response to Ryssa. "That piece of Otyugh dung doesn't deserve anything but the tip of my blade in his gut. You are a fool Ryssa. A fool. Go play with the wizard. See what you get out of him. It'll all be lies. And when you're done with him, if he doesn't spit out the truth, I'll take over. I'm going to sit over there and sharpen my fillet knife while he toys with you."

He stomps angrily into the room.

"You get to live a few more moments. You'll be mine soon and it won't be pretty!" He says to Iarno as he unsheathes his dagger, sits in a chair, removes his sharpening stone and starts to slide the blade up and down it slowly. The sound of metal grating on the stone fills the room.

"He's yours for now cleric. Then he's mine."

He shook his head sadly and turned away from the site of the pending carnage with a bit of a shiver. Mostly so that Iano could not see the smile that kept trying to take over his face, of course.

Shaking her head slowly, Ryssa walked over to the captive mage and stared at him for a long moment before speaking.

"Lingo really wants to kill you." She shrugged.

"I can't really blame him even though I don't agree with his methods."

The cleric squatted on her haunches.

"Tell me about the spider."

Iarno seems a bit shaken by Lingo's comments and action and eagerly follows Ryssa to one side, away from the murderous halfling.

"My good Lady", he begins. "There is no need for violence. I will tell you all I know. Indeed why would I not?"

He glances at Lingo again, then back to Ryssa.

"The Spider. Yes. A Drow Elf. He is searching for Wave Echo Cave and the Forge of Spells." He begins to go into a detailed history of Wave Echo Cave and the Forge of Spells, using a schoolteacher's tone (see "News" thread). You hear nothing new in this, but it does confirm what you've heard before.

She nodded, frowning as she searched her memory.

"So what else can you tell me about this Black Spider and about Cragmaw Castle and about a dwarf named Gundren?"

Pausing to gather his thoughts, Iarno replies, "You must understand. I came here on a mission for the Lord's Alliance to establish order here in Phandalin. The Alliance would pay well to find out where I am."

He pauses again, looking for any flicker of interest in Ryssa's eyes, then continues.

"Things just sort of fell out the way they did. I recruited locals to be a police force but one of them was an agent of the Spider. The Spider needed money and information to find Wave Echo Cave. He knows it was a dwarven mine and forge and dwarves are often found passing thru here. So he showed up one day with several Bugbears and told me if I didn't help him he'd kill me. He left the Bugbears to watch over me. He said I needed to extort money and slaves from the townsfolk and to use the Redbrands to do it. I had no choice."

He shrugs. "I've heard of Gundren and his brothers. Everyone in town has. The Spider wanted to talk to them, but I haven't seen them."

"As for Cragmaw, the Bugbears mentioned it once or twice, but I don't know where it is."

One eyebrow quirked upward at the mention of the Alliance, but she made no verbal response to that information.

Ryssa wished she knew enough, had paid closer attention to all she'd heard since their arrival in town, so she would have better questions to ask and would be better able to evaluate the mage's answers.

She glanced around to the others with a questioning look to see how they were reacting to Iarno's answers.

"If, as you say, you were on the Alliance side, why did you fight against us rather than join us when we appeared?"

"My familiar told me strangers were attacking the compound. That they'd killed the guardian and several of the men. For all I knew you were the Spider's men come to kill me before I could talk. I was merely defending myself and my men."
