There was always small prey to be caught. His sensitive nose detected a faint eau du mouse. It had a home nearby under the porch.

She nods. That makes sense.

"Can I help?"

The storm had obviously thrown her or she might have suggested this herself.

Two cats are always better than one at hunting. In a less than a blink of a nap they have the prey ready to perform their ritual.

She kept an eye on the place as they hunted. It probably wouldn't do anything, but you never could tell.

She watched it unblinkingly.

She grins at Shadow, nodding at the mouse and washing her whiskers.

"That was fun.. and quick."

She is ready to help with the ritual but the idea was his and so he should have first dibs with the sacrifice.

Shadow

Having had to return to corporeality to hunt, the ginger tom was now able to attempt the ritual, having a grounding in the art. The disadvantage was he was now getting rained on, and this did nothing good for his temper.

Nonetheless, here was blood to seal the ward, here was life to fuel it, and here the will to etch it into being.

The big cat had moved to help catch the mouse, but his two feline companions were quicker than he was and he moved back to the hole and helped the black cat keep watch.

She let Shadow lead the ritual but stepped in to assist where she thought she could strengthen the ward. She doesn't like the rain either, looking a bit down and sodden.

The ritual completed, the hole sealed, or whatever it was. It would keep burdens from stepping off into oblivion. It might keep things from returning to the cat's world, from where ever it was, that it went. The cats are reasonably sure the ritual went off very well given their cooperation.

The old burden turns to return inside leaving the porch and the steadily falling rain.

"So what now?"

She asks her more experienced companions.

"Do we stay with the burden or head home?"

She stretches, extending her front legs as she does so, thinking that some nice food, a warm dry cushion and maybe some attention from her burden is in order, after all she has worked hard this morning.

Shadow

He ducked back on the porch, and began washing the rain off.

"Someone will need to adopt the Burden, maintain the ward, keep a whisker aquiver on that water down there."

"Is there anyone free to do that? I have a burden already and he is new to me, I cannot be away all the time. Maybe I could share the duty with others?"

She is not sure what the situation is or how big a part she is expected to play. She doesn't like the idea of being here on her own though.
