Shadow

The Burden was awake and confused. Admittedly this was pretty much the default for all Burdens not indulging in the long nap, but still, it was less than optimal in their present circumstance. It was likely that seeing a double pawful of the True People unexpectedly present would only add to the confusion, thus it was imperative that they get out of the Burden's line of sight before its feeble eyes had a chance to acclimate to the dark.

Shadow tucked himself inside the nearest umbra.

TIGER - LILY

She assumes the spirit has gone. Maybe it would not do what it was supposed to? Would that be to harm the burden?

Perhaps seeing all of them gathered here might upset him, so avoiding the puddle she hides under the bed.

Oh, now not just damp, but soaked! And salty. Miss Washburn will not be happy when he gets back home. She may even try to *wash* him again. So silly for a smart burden.

He thought about trying to shake the water away, but then noticed the old man waking. Oh, that was worse than wet. Too many here to be seen. There would be Questions. And Questions were never good.

So he sprang down and darted from the room, not caring much for what might be in the way. It was time to be gone, they could discuss what, if anything, they had learned later.

Bringer


He had not acted because he did not know what to do. Bringer knew he did not like the soaking, did not like the spirit and did not like being here.

He did not think this would work, but he knew nothing else to try. After shaking as much of the water from his thick fur as he could, Bringer moved under the edge of the bed, close to the small, female feline and curled up, nose to tail, closed his eyes and concentrated intently on control, control of the spirit, using the name Gardenia as a point of focus.

Bringer was pretty sure it woudln't work, and he was right. However it did inform him by an absence of any kind of a response that the spirit wasn't there to be controlled. It was as if she wasn't present at all. The name did resonate though, that much was right.

The old man burden looked to the darting form of a cat running out of his room and completely missed the sight of all the other cats moving about, some remaining in plain view. He seemed quite bewildered.

There was a flash of lightening just outside the window and a massive crash from the bolt suddenly.

TIGER - LILY

She visibly finches at the crash from outside. She can't help it, she doesn't like storms. At least she is under the bed, it does make her feel slightly safer. And she is glad that Bringer is here. Always more comforting to have company.

Soot

She slinks to a place of concealment from there she can wait and exit when the Burden is distracted. Storms do that to them. So does the dark.

Shadow

Now was the time to wait, and to keep watch for anything from the storm trying to enter. The waiting alertness of the hunter, hiding crouched low...

Bringer


"The spirit is gone from this place," he said in an almost disappointed voice.

"But the name is legitimate."

The flash died down from the stroke from the sky, and the noise died away. The old burden climbed from the soft covered nap thing and looked out the window. He frowned but said nothing and clearly didn't notice the cats all around his room.

Wrapping himself in a cloth he went downstairs towards the kitchen, leaving the cats alone.

Tiger-Lily

She for one is pleased that the spirit is gone. She wonders if her ward had been the cause of the spirit's distress but thinks that is unlikely as the spirit was manifest here not near the pond.

The burden disappears from the room.

"What now? Do we follow him? Wait here? Go home?"

She is keen to help and to try to establish herself as she is new to the area and this group but she is also inexperienced and unsure what they should be doing now.

Soot

Almost resigned to occasional dampness due to the nature of her burden's pursuits, Soot briskly grooms herself and looks to the others. No need to run right now to avoid the burden.

They heard a door downstairs open and the sounds of the weather a tiny bit better. A soft cold draft moved about the room in response to the open door. The burden went out onto the front porch.

Bringer


The large, rather scruffy looking cat followed the burden downstairs and stood to one side of the door to see what it was doing.

Shadow

This conduct seemed... odd, even for a Burden. The shadow flitted out from its hiding place, trailing downstairs through the darkness to see what would send a Burden from his napping place into the cold and wet of a storm.

Tiger-Lily

Under the bed with Bringer had been a reasonable option. Now he and Shadow are leaving. She really doesn't want to go out into the storm but she doesn't think splitting up is a good idea either and they are not exactly contributing here.

"Think we should stay with the others."

She creeps out from under the bed, prepared to follow.

Soot

Soot mrps her agreement. "Water, from the sky. I never did like that option."

The burden is on the porch staring out at the storm. He is just standing his robe wrapped around him. Near by on the ground is a black spot just below the tree. It smells different to their little noses. Rain continues to fall and a chill wind ruffles their fur.

[OOC Bringer & Shadow went downstairs first. I can't post for Tiger-Lily until they post.]

Shadow

Something odd, something not quite right with that area of darkness near the Burden. Flitting through the gloom, the shadow of a cat drew near to it for a better assessment...

Bringer


The odor was odd, tantalizing almost, and the rumpled looking cat concentrated his sight and olfactory senses upon the black spot as he moved reluctantly to follow Shadow.

Tiger-Lily

She peers ahead realising that the burden has gone outside, only just outside, but that the other cats may well be venturing out also. She really doesn't want to go out into the rain storm but at the same time she doesn't feel she can abandon the others.

She moves further downstairs and hovers in the shadow of the doorway watching.

The porch is protected from the rain as the old burden is, staring out at the world beyond. He doesn't seem particularly interested in any one spot, more likely lost in his memories.

The charcoaled bit of grass near the edge of the porch smelled of something different. It was like air, but more pungent air, like maybe air that had been treated in some way. Though there was no sign of what had treated the air in such a manner, nor did the burden seem to notice the spot, nor the smell.

Shadow

Careful to stay in the darkness in case the Burden started looking at things again, the shadow cat moved to interpose itself between the hapless two-legged thing and the concentrated-air-smelling burnt bit.

Soot

She doesn't like the rain more than any other, but once downstairs with the others her curiosity draws her outside toward the pungent smelling spot to investigate.

It's dark, and she's a dark cat. Hopefully the Burden won't see her.
