Gundren Rockseeker and his escort, a warrior named Sildar Hallwinter set out ahead of the supply wagon.

You set off, following he High Road south from Neverwinter. You've encountered little no trouble so far but this territory can be dangerous. Bandits and outlaws have been known to lurk along the trail.

Two days pass and you've just recently veered east along the Triboar Trail. You've been on the trail for about a half a day. As you come around a bend, you spot two dead horses sprawled about fifty feet ahead of you, blocking the path. Each has several black-feathered arrows sticking out of it. The woods press close to the trail here, with a steep embankment and dense thickets on either side.

ooc: It's time to roll for surprise. I'll do this open for this encounter so you all can learn the mechanics. You have no chance of surprise but your foes have a chance of getting the jump on you.

The roll is a d20 roll and they add their stealth modifiers. My rolls:
18, 8, 18, 20, 8, 18

There are 6 goblins trying to hide. They have +6 stealth. We compare the results to your passive perceptions. Since their lowest rolls were 8, do any of you have a passive perception of 14? That's what you need to spot them. Otherwise, if you don't, avoid metagaming and roleplay what you are doing.

Notice that I'll be posting all rolling and OOC in red. That keeps it easy to read. You should do the same.

I'm also going to use "theater of the mind" for this encounter.

Update: Jaliera notices two of the goblins. She can attack. The rest of you cannot this round. I still need all of you need to roll initiative now.

Nope. Perception of 13
Assuming Initiative is D20 + (or in my case -) dex = 3

Karok Battlehammer

For two days now, he'd been in the back of the wagon, watching their backs. His shield and warhammer worth beside him and he half wished for trouble so the boredom would end.

*Easiest gold I ever earned.* He thought.

If he wasn't being paid for this, he'd be asleep in the back.

[Passive Perception of 13. Initiative 12]

Chandan

He nearly walks into the back of Gundren's wagon when it slows to a halt.

Chandan leans shakily around the side of the wagon, and sees the dead horses and arrows.

"Uh-oh! Ambush must have happened here or two dying horse not fall in same place." Says the old vagabond, squinting.

He looks at the empty flagon in his hand, a coy smile crossing his face.

"Good thing I'm drunk. Less wine for bandits to steal."

[Passive Perception of 11. Initiative roll 11.]

Kriv

The Dragonborn's eyes narrowed at the sight of the slain horses, and he turned around to address Karok and Chandan, reaching back to unsling his maul as he did so.

"This stinks of a trap: Why else would the horses be left as an obstruction in the road? Keep your eyes open, watch the treelines."

Walking ahead with Davroar, she comes around the bend and sees the two dead horses lying in the trail. They look familiar, and she moves over to examine them

"AMBUSH! Creatures in the woods."

She takes her bow, knocks an arrow and fires at the closest one she can see.

Passive perception: 14
Initiative: d20+3 = 14

Attack roll: d20+5 = 18

Davroar

He is a lot more relaxed now that they are out of the city. The trip has been uneventful until they come across the two dead horses. He follows along with Kallista, curious as to how they died.

[Passive perception = 13, Initiative = 4]

Even though Jaliera notices the goblins, the enemy reacts first and the one she sees puts an arrow into her left shoulder. The return fire from the rogue strikes it through the neck and it drops. The other five goblins move out from behind the trees and fire arrows at the wagon escorts. Kallista, Karok and Kriv are hit.

Goblin initiative Neptune rolled 1d20+2 and got 20
goblin-1 attacks Kallista Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 19, 5 - Hit 5 points damage
goblin-2 attacks Jaliera Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 20 - Hit 5 points damage
goblin-3 attacks Karok Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 19, 18 - Hit 5 points damage
goblin-4 attacks Davroar Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 10, 14
goblin-5 attacks Kriv Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 22, 16 - Hit 5 points damage
goblin-6 attacks Chandan Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 7, 10

Note that for 5 of the attacks I rolled 2 d20 - advantage to goblins attacking PC's who can't see them yet. Initiative will dictate the next round.

So far...
Goblins - 20
Jaliera - 14
Kriv - 11
Kallista - 9
Chandan -
Davroar -
Karok -

Yes, initiative is 1d20+ dex modifier. Sorry, I should have specified.

Although their advantage has passed, the goblins are quick to fire more arrows in the second round of combat and get their well-aimed shots off before their prey has a chance to react. After the arrow hits the Kallista, she slumps over and slips into unconsciousness.

Goblin-6 attacks Chandan Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 10
Goblin-5 attacks Kriv Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 20 - hit 5 dam
Goblin-4 attacks Davroar Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 10
Goblin-3 attacks Karok Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 8
Goblin-1 attacks Kallista Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 20 - hit 5 dam

It's not looking very good for you. I actually rerolled the attacks for the goblins TWICE to get down to this. On the first attempt they 4 party members, one was a crit. I deleted those rolls. The second set of rolls were worse! This set of rolls was reasonable but still bad, but you have a chance.

Surprise + initiative was deadly!

Those of you who are alive get to go. Zeim, time for that 1st death save!

Karok

With a roar, Karok had shield and warhammer in hand as he jumped from the cart, charging at the nearest Goblin.

As a bonus action, Karok uses Bolts of Inspiration (1 attack as a bonus action). I assume that's 2 attacks this turn?
Karok attacks with warhammer: d20+4 = 20
Damage: 1d8+2 = 4
Karok attacks with warhammer: d20+4 = 10 (I assume miss)
Fearsome! wink

DM note: Nivek. You cheated yourself on damage. Karok gets +2 dam for strength, +2 for being proficient. He does 6 damage - not 2!

Other DM Note: Nep - According to the PHB you only get your Proficiency Bonus to your To-Hit roll, not to Damage. You get your Stat modifier to both, but not your Prof modifier.

The Dragonborn grimaced, teeth gritted, looking down at the two black arrowshafts that had pierced his chain and scales. Nonetheless, he centred himself, slowly inhaling, indrawing his breath. As he did so, he dropped from the cart and began implacably advancing on the line of Goblins, measuring his pace until as many of them were within range as possible, but mindful to avoid catching his allies.

He paused, held his breath, and then roared forth a tremendous wave of incandescent flame, hosing down the luckless few goblins nearest to him with dreaded Dragonfire. Before the blackened earth could cool, he strode towards the Goblin bowmen, menacing them with his maul lest any dare to nock another arrow. And just in case none knew that Dragonborn could not do that twice in quick succession, he indrew another breath as threateningly as he could manage...

Bonus action:Second Wind. Regain 1d10+1=11(!) hitpoints. Action: Breath Weapon. 15ft cone dealing 2d6=8 damage, DC11 dex save for half. Movement: Up to optimal coverage with breath weapon before action, close to within 5 feet of any survivors after.

He staggers out in front of the wagon, trying to draw the goblin's attention, partly out of concern for Kallista and the druid, true, but also out of drunken belligerence.

"Dog-mothers! You rubbish! You shoot like a blindman peeing on hummingbird!"

The smelly old vagabond mimes the described activity.

Davroar

The ambush is sudden, and his only instinct as the arrows sing by him is to drop to the ground. Scrambling prone he hides between the dead horses bodies for what little cover it offers.

Looking to where Kallista has fallen, he will try to reach out to her to cast a cure wounds on her.

Jaliera

She is frightened but she channels that into action. It is a kill or be killed scenario and she has seen a number of her group have been hit. Kallista is down The fighters are advancing on the goblins. She has to do everything she can. At this point she is barely aware that she too has been hit in the shoulder.

She stays on the wagon to gain the height advantage and looks for another target, ideally one clear of her own group. She is now looking to target the furthest goblin as she thinks it/they will be more likely to retain the use of their bows and hopefully the fighters can deal with the closest ones.

[OOC I assume you will tell us when we have an advantage and need to roll 2 dice? smile Also I assume another difference in this version is that missile fire is only 1 per round? ]

To hit: 1d20+5 = 18
Damage: 1d6+3 = 5

(Other DM - Gypsy - Note that as a thief you get a Sneak Attack 1/rd and can add an extra 1d6 damage to any enemy upon which you have advantage OR if you attack an enemy that has one of your allies within 5 feet of it. So, your best move is usually firing at enemies who are engaged with your allies in melee rather than firing at distant targets, unless you have advantage on them.)

Chandan

Seeing the young Davroar reaching for the tiefling, Chandan staggers forward to intercept one of the goblins. The surface of the road seems suddenly very uneven to him, almost trecherous...

Losing his balance, he stumbles forwards, flinging out the spear for support, then wheeling around with his hands flailing, trying to keep his feet.

[Attack with spear. Hit roll 10 in total. If hit, damage roll 6 in total.
Bonus unarmed attack. Hit roll 17 in total. If hit, damage roll 5 in total]

Davroar

Grasping Kallista's wrist he takes a deep breath and casts his spell, hoping it will be enough to bring her back up.
He watches her closely to see if she regains consciousness as he will want to warn her that the hidden archers are still shooting. The last thing he wants is to have her jump up and get shot again.

Cure wounds results 10 hp

[OOC Yes I understand about the sneak attack & your other info ties it in nicely with the advantage. Jaliera is aware her group are in trouble and if she hides/sneaks she removes herself more as a target and makes it more likely that others will be hurt. So for the moment she maintains a visible presence. One further question - I was concerned about firing into melee. Is she not likely to hit a fellow party member? Thanks! ]

Jaliera stays on the wagon and fires her arrows at a goblin that had emerged from behind the trees. The arrow strikes true but the goblin survives. Karok jumps off the wagon with warhammer in hand and anger boiling in him. He rushes to answer the goblin's arrow with the business end of his warhammer. The hammerhead lands a solid blow but it's not enough to fell the goblin. Kriv also dismounts from the wagon and closes in on a goblin on the other side of the wagon. That goblin feels the heat from his fiery breath and is unable to avoid it and dies. Davroar rushes to Kallista's side and calls upon divine power to heal her. Chandan whirls around with his spear in hand and misses his weapon attack on the goblin he is facing but the goblin is caught somewhat by surprised when the monk's fist knocks some teeth out of it's mouth

Of the four remaining goblins, only one has not been struck. That goblin was lucky that Davroar decided to heal the tiefling and took advantage of the druid by attacking him from behind while he does his curing. The scimitar blade cuts into him deeply. The goblin that got smacked by Karok tries to return a favor but his scimitar misses. Off to the side, one goblin decides to keep firing arrows at Kallista and misses. He ducks behind the trees to gain cover. And the goblin that is battling Chandan manages to slash him with his blade and draw blood.

Goblin-4 Attack Davroar with advantage Neptune rolled 1d20+4,1d20+4 and got 16, 10 - hit 5 point
Goblin-6 Attack Chandan Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 20 - hit 5 points
Goblin-1 Attack Kallista Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 12 - miss
Goblin-3 Attack Karok Neptune rolled 1d20+4 and got 8 - miss

Her heart is beating fast, her eyes darting around trying to work out who needs help the most... and see a goblin attack Davroar whilst he is defenceless. That spikes her anger and she targets it without a second thought.

[I didn't realise you add your proficiency bonus to hit rolls! Probably would've hit that goblin twice. C'est la vie. Let's try my luck a second time.]

Chandan

The greybeard grunted as the goblin lunged, thrusting its sword at his belly. He caught the tip of the blade in his fist, but it still drove his own hand back into his midrift with an "Ooof!"

Well, that's the drunken fury taken right out of Chandan! He spins, whipping the spear around, intent on getting the Nine Hells out of there and seemingly ignorant of where the spearpoint is going...

Oblivious to the goblin behind him, he glances around for his companions. What are they doing fighting!? They should run for their lives!

He scrambles over to Karok, to grab the dwarf and drag him away to safety. (Chandan knows how stubborn dwarves can be, but it's for Karok's own good.)

If he makes it to the dwarf, he falters when he sees the ferociousness of the goblin, trips, and flies forehead first into the goblin's face.

[Attack with spear. Hit roll 23 in total. Damage 9 total.
Move.
Unarmed bonus attack. Hit roll 22 in total. Damage 4 total.

OK, so the +5 to hit didn't really make any difference there. But still, that's more like it! Thank you official D&D Dice Roller!]

Turning from the smouldering corpse, he span on his heels, looking arond for further threats. Karok seemed to have his in hand, the one menacing the healer and tiefling had just sprouted an arrowshaft, which left the one that had just stabbed Chandan. He strode towards it, already drawing back his maul, but aiming to cripple and incapacitate rather than kill. After all, they needed one for questioning.

Well, most of one.

He swung the massive hammer at the scrawny little thing's leg at the knee...

Kallista

Groaning her eyes open to see Davroar above her. She nods to him in thanks, only to see him stagger as a Goblin stabs at him from behind.

**No time for pleasantries!** She thinks.

Standing up (takes half her move), she is about to attack that Goblin when an arrow from Jaliera hits it and it falls to the ground (Nep - Making an assumption here so I can post. If I am wrong I will edit).

Turning, she locates the furthest Goblin who is firing his bow that she can see and gestures very briefly in his direction. A moment later she speaks a word and points at that same Goblin.

First, using a Bonus Action to cast Hex on that Goblin. No attack roll necessary. Automatically hits anyone she targets that she can see. She gains an additional 1d6 damage on any attack on a target she has "Hexed", and if it drops she can move it to a new target with another Bonus Action. She can also give it Disadvantage on any Ability Checks it makes for a Statistic she chooses (choosing Dex) for the duration of the spell (Concentration up to 1 hour).

Next, casting Eldritch Blast at the Goblin she Hexed.

Kallista Eldritch Blast
Zeim rolled 1d20+5 and got 14 (expect it missed)
Kallista Eldritch Blast - damage
Zeim rolled 1d10,1d6 and got 1, 4

After firing her Eldritch Blast, she moves to the cover of the wagon (or as close as she can get with the other half of her move).

DM note: By the time you are ready to attack that goblin, he's dead. There is one goblin (the one in the trees) ahead of you that is unharmed. He's your only legit target.

Karok

His method of healing was different than perhaps these others were used to. He preferred to get rid of attackers first and heal afterwards, plus he certainly wasn't going to pass up a chance to smack around a goblin who'd tried to kill him.

After blocking his attack with his shield, he rounded hard with a swing of his warhammer, powered by years at a forge.

Karok Swings Warhammer at Goblin
Nivek rolled d20+6 and got 11 (Assuming miss)

Once again calling on his God's power he swings again.

War domain: Bolts of Inspiration (2/3) bonus action to get another attack.
Karok Swing2 Warhammer at Goblin
Nivek rolled d20+6 and got 16 (Assume hit?)

The last set of attacks by the goblins would, indeed, be their last. Once the fight got fair, and the goblins no longer had the benefit of surprise, they fell quickly.

Kriv destroys the legs of that one last goblin. He's alive but rendered harmless.

ooc: Without the use of tactical map it's so difficult for PC's to understand what's going on. I'm unlikely to do it again unless if there's more than one or two enemies. Tactical maps
really do help. What are you doing now?????

(OOC - OK, so no Goblins left to fight, correct?)

Kallista

Stepping away form the wagon as the last Goblin is taken down by Karok, she notes with satisfaction that it is alive.

"My thanks, Davroar. I am in your debt." She says seriously to the Druid.

She then walks over to the dead horses that originally attracted their attention and examines them. She thought they looked familiar.

Kriv

The Dragonborn loomed over the crippled Goblin, idly reaching down and pulling out the embedded arrows from his flesh, one after the other, not a flicker of discomfort on his reptilian features. He let them clatter to the ground beside him, and crouched down, bringing his toothy maw ever closer. When he spoke, it was barely louder than a whisper, but laden with venom.

"You attacked us without warning. That was a very, very stupid thing to do. Why did you do it? Did someone tell you to? You're going to tell me, or you aren't going to die. I will break every one of your limbs, and leave you next to those rotting horses for your wounds to fester over the coming days, tendays and even months if you last that long. If I do not hear the truth from you now, I will hear your screams behind me for several miles, until your throat is too raw to be heard. Choose."

There is a feeling of elation as the goblin she had targeted fell over. Still fired up she looks around but all the goblins apart from the one by Kriv lay still.

She takes a deep breath. She now becomes aware of other things. The unpleasant smell of burning, the trembling in her legs, the pain in her shoulder. Everything that just happened hits home and her stomach churns. She leans over the side of the wagon and throws up.

He kicks the goblin as it falls. Then turns around to look for the next one. When he sees none, he does notice the little human girl sicking up by the wagon.

He ambles over to her.

"Are ye alright lass? Need some healing?"

Kallista definitely can tell the dead horses are the very same ones that Gundren and his escort were riding. There is no sign of either of them. An empty leather map case lies on the ground nearby. Each Goblin carries a scimitar and scabbard as well as a short bow and quiver of 20 arrows. They have no money.

ooc:
1) Can I get an intimidation roll for Kriv?

2) Gypsy, with a constitution of 10 that's surprising. I would've made you do a constitution check first <g>

"Hey." She calls back to the group. "These were the horses Gundren and that human...., um, Sildar, wasn't it, were riding! Looks like these Goblins attacked them too!"

She holds up the leather case. "Nothing left in their saddlebags but I did find this empty map case. Wonder what Gundren had a map to?"

Chandan

Clutching his bloody hand in his armpit, he hobbles over to stand by Kriv and stare at the goblin.

Assuming that the creature is doomed, Chandan sings a Yehimal mountain dirge, usually preceding a sky burial, when the remains of the dead are dismembered and tenderised for the condors to feed on.

It's possible that the Dragonborn doesn't understand the correct order (death, dismember, then tenderise), but Chandan sings the dirge anyway.

He isn't a good singer.

He did not even see his goblin attacker as it came up behind him as he was casting his spell. Its sword sliced him good and deep through his armour. Thankfully, Jaliera took the goblin down with a expertly aimed arrow before it could take a second strike.

Through his pain, he slowly realizes the rest of the goblins are killed. Taking a couple of steps towards the wagon, he finds the pain too much and slowly lowers himself to the ground. Taking off his pack, he hunts for a old shirt that is somewhat clean. He will need to stop the bleeding, as he fumbles with his belts and ties to undo his armour with slightly shaking hands.

As she turns back to tell the others what she found on the horses, she sees Davroar slump down clutching his side.

**Idiot! So thankful for the healing he gave you you never even stopped to see if he was alright.**

She rushes back to the druid and kneels down next to him.

"Here, let me." She says, taking the shirt from his hands and pressing it to the wound until the bleeding stops.

Muttering a few choice curses through clenched teeth, he manages to give Kallista a weak smile and says, "Thanks. Looks like it's stopped now."

Slowly standing up he cinches his armour back up and says, "Did I hear you right? The horses are Gundren's and his man?"

"Nothing hidden in the case, Kallista?"

If there is nothing here, then it looks like the one goblin that Kriv and Chandan have caught will be their only clue to finding out what happened to Gundren.

"Yes. No way to tell what it could have been. Maybe where he was going to meet his brothers. Maybe just a map of the area." She shrugs. "No way to tell. Unless he", she nods towards the Goblin captive, "knows."

The goblin, in obvious pain, cowers from Kriv as the dragonborn stands over him.

"No kill Gurgul. No kill I."

It seems quite ready to answer questions and conveniently it speaks broken common.

He looks down at the pathetic wretch, disdain and disgust etched in the dragonscale of his face.

"I make you no promises, because I want the truth. Who sent you? Who told you to ambush here? What happened to the people who were on those horses?"

"It seems the demon lass found Gundren's horse."

"Kkarg send we. He told by Cragmaw bigs. Dwarf come. Stop he. Orders only I do. No say no to Klarg. If do is dead. Taken to hideout be they."

Implacably, the Dragonborn pressed on with his questioning: Gundren Rockspeaker alive but a prisoner put a whole new perspective on the whole endeavour.

"Where, exactly, is this hideout? How far from here, in which direction? How many people obey Klarg? What are the Cragmaw Bigs?"

"Gundren? Is he OK? What happened?"

She is recovering quickly, especially at Karok said she had done well. She wants to play her part.. and to earn her money.

"Perhaps you could pull the arrow out?"

She gestures to her left shoulder.

He bared his fangs, and leaned in closer.

"I think you're smarter than that, goblin. You can follow orders, you know how to spring a good ambush. You know where it is. You know how to get there. And you know how to tell others to get there. You are trying to hide the truth from me, and that is a very bad thing, for you.

Klarg is not here. He can not hurt you or kill you for saying where the hideout is. I am here. I can hurt you or kill you if you do not say how to get to the hideout. Put it in simple words. Like to a goblin from far away who wants to serve Klarg but does not know how to get to him. How do we get to the hideout? Short words. Clear words. Many words. Now."

He gave in to Despair, nodding acceptance.

"I was thinking more on the improbability of there being another ambush to lead us into: If these little wretches were better shots then it is fully possible we could all be dead. What purpose would another ambush serve when this one has claimed all the spoils? Nonetheless, your point has merit, though he'll need watching, and we may need to impair his ability to cause trouble, perhaps by selective amputation."

He had the look of a warrior but Jaliera found that he had a surprisingly gentle touch. This was clearly not the first time he'd done this. If needed, he made the opening a bit larger to keep the skin from ripping and he eased the arrow out of her, quickly pressing a bandage to her skin.

"I see nothing major damaged. You've lost blood. We'll keep this on you to keep ye from losing more."

He then looks at his own injury and does the same for himself. Fortunately, he'd not been shot in a place he couldn't reach or see.

[ooc: If we don't take a short rest, then he'll cast the heal, but I think everyone took wounds.]

She nods. "As long as it is his arms we amputate and not his legs. I don't feel like taking a turn carrying him."

She moves to stand in front of the Goblin and smiles a toothy smile. "I think he will give second and third thoughts to betraying us, won't you", she says, and as she does her eyes begin to glow a deep and burning red and the earth under the Goblin shakes as if with a minor earthquake.

"Now, who are these Cragmaw 'bigs' you mentioned and where are they at?"

There is pain but it is less than she expected and the worst is over fairly quickly. She smiles at Karok.

"I appreciate your help, thank you. This.. this is the first time I've ever killed a creature."

The goblin spills what he knows and that's not much. There is a hideout, the goblin lair, not far from here. A path in the woods will lead you there. You learn that there are traps on the trail, meant to capture would-be infiltrators, like yourselves. From what you can gather, the Cragmaw bigs refers to the leaders of the Cragmaw goblin clan. You cannot get good information about where those leaders are. You gather that there are about a dozen or so goblins at the hideout.

She smiles at Karok and accepts his hand to get her to her feet, offering her right hand as would be natural for her but it also preserves her shoulder. She walks with Karok to where the others are standing.

"Did we find out anything about Gundren's fate?"

He finally stops singing, because it looks like the goblinoid might be spared. However, he's not entirely sure how the creature will walk with its legs smashed in.

Surveying the scene, he sees the party recouping, the Magic of the Multiverse providing healing but the goodness in people providing the succor.

He shrugs and unstoppers the wine flagon for refreshments.

As Karok and Jaliera approach, he turns to them and nods.

"The vermin has been forthcoming. We know where Gundren and Sildar are and that they lived when last they were seen, we know how to get there, and we know on whose authority they were taken."

He took a few moments to relay all the details the Goblin had provided.

"I believe he has told us everything of value. We have a couple of options: Use him as a guide on the path, or give him Mercy, as he is unable to walk. Feel free to make any additional inquiries."

Stepping a little closer to the goblin he asks, "Gurgle. The path to hideout big enough for wagon?"

If it is not, then that will more than likely answer whether or nor Gurgle is going with them, as he doubts any of them will be wanting to carry the injured goblin.

She nods as Karok asks the question guessing where his thoughts are heading.

"An alternative to the cart is to heal him sufficiently so that he can lead the way through the traps, that should guarantee us a safe passage. Hobbled and gagged he shouldn't be too much of a burden and if he performs well then he can earn his freedom once we have concluded our business.

The goblin might be more motivated if it feels there is a chance to survive. And they do not know what lies ahead. It would be wasteful to get rid of a possible resource too early. She is not that squeamish about the goblin being killed, after all it and its band have just tried to kill them.

"We will need to plan our rescue carefully. They have superior numbers and we know they can be effective. If we can get surprise on our side, that would help."

She feels that they should try to rescue Gundren. Her mentor knows him quite well and would expect her to try.

Having gotten as much out of this goblin as needed for now, the group must decide what to do next. It seems evident that they'll need to find this goblin lair, hopefully to rescue Gundren or, at very least to get more information about where he is. The group could, of course, choose to return home and live a sedentary life, but that doesn't seem to be the prevailing attitude.

If they are to seek out this lair they have a dilemma on their hands. They are wounded and some of their abilities are depleted. They can heal up but do they have enough in reserve to tackle a dozen or so goblins? Is a short rest enough or is it more important to be at full strength?

"The rest of us need a bit of time. If we need more healing the rest of the day, I'll do what I can. Let's just be more wary from now on."

Perhaps it was a comment about the forward scouts, perhaps just a general comment. Hard to tell for sure.

He sat down and began looking at his own wound.

After the rest Karok is as good as new.

The group must decide what to do with the Gurgle, their prisoner, the wagon and the oxen that pull the wagon before moving on. The trail that Gurgle pointed out is too narrow to handle the wagon.

He would like to have the longer time to re-memorize his spells now that they know what they are going up against. Looking to each person he hopes no one will object, but if not he is prepared to move on after just a short rest.

"I'll admit, I am torn. I have pledged to see this wagon to its final destination no matter what, and am not comfortable simply abandoning it. Yet I took on this task due to the obligations of my family to Gundren: I would be remiss if we did not help him in his current predicament, especially given that his life is endangered. There may be something in the cargo that he would rather not go unattended, even at the cost of lives, ours or his: This, too we need to bear in mind.

However, the most pressing problem is this. We know he was alive when the vermin last saw him. We know he has been subject to their tender mercies ever since those horses were killed, to say nothing of any injuries sustained in the ambush. We do not know how long he will live under those conditions, but the longer we leave it, the greater the risk. Will he be dead in another seven hours? We connot know the answer. Weigh the risk, and state your position."

He conducted a quick tally.

"Davroar wishes to wait. I would rather hide the cart and act swiftly, As would Jaliera. Karok, Kallista and Chandan seem satisfied with our time recuperating so far but have not been explicit. The consensus seems to be to act sooner rather than later. Any strenuous objections?"

She looks from person to person, ending with Davroar. "I will go along with Davroar. Without his healing I might not be here now. If he feels he needs to refresh his magic I will support him."

She looks at the others. "The signs show Gundren's horse was killed a day ago. If he is not dead already, then they must be keeping him for a reason and I'd guess he will still be alive tomorrow."

She pauses, "Yes it is a guess, based on nothing but supposition, but the battle here was not easy, and that was against only 5 Goblins. I would hate to go into battle against possibly 3 times that many without all the healing we can have."

He claps the stopper back into his flagon and smacks his lips.

"Strenuous objection to rest just makes more rest needed." Smiles Chandan, ambling off up the slope and leaning on the haft of his spear. He's looking for a nice spot to sit.

"Besides, there are only provisions in the wagon and Gundren Rockseeker said himself he had more important business." He says over his shoulder.

"The wagon is the feather. Gundren Rockseeker is the goose."

"Which brings us to three of our number wishing to delay. Kallista, a reasonable supposition given the evidence at hand. The party has decided what to do about rest and that means that you will spend the night before trying to take on the goblin hideout. That gives you some time to decide what to do with Gurgle.

Happy enough to go with the majority she goes in search of her spent arrows, not to difficult to find as they had hit their targets. Using her dagger she gently frees them, not liking the job but her mentor always says 'waste not, want not'.

The group makes camp and spends the a night recuperating from their first battle. For some the recovery is both physical and emotional. It was the first time that their hands had spilled blood.

You start to rise as Lathandar spills morning sunlight onto their encampment. There's a slight chill in the morning and there's a slight mist rising from the grass as rays of sunlight evaporate the dew. The morning calm is broken when Gurgul wakes up. He needs constant reminding to stop whining.

You must now decide on what order they will trek down the path and where Gurgul is in that order. The path is be too narrow to allow two people to safely travel shoulder to shoulder.

1. Marching order please. Single file and double file. I'll use this as a default going forward unless/until you decide to change it.
2. You have a lot of choices of what to do with Gurgul. You can dispatch him, you can keep him with you but explain how you handle that, you can secure him here with the oxen and wagon, you can free him into the wild (don't expect the wagon or oxen to be here when you get back if you do that).

When the goblin whines,

"It's making too much noise. It has become a liability."

He unslung his maul with serpentine grace.

Hurt as it was, the goblin had a pitiful night so Chandan had quietened it down with a smoked draught from his herb kit.

The old man has already sung it a dirge and eased its pain for the night, but the time for Gurgle to answer for its misdeeds is now at hand.

"Drink and win!" Chandan gives Gurgle the traditional toast for luck where he comes from and swallows a mouthful of crisp, clear wine.

[Chandan will bring up the rear.]

He had no issues with dispatching the goblin. He'd made no bargain with it and as far as he knew no promises had been made. He'd spent enough years fighting to be hardened to death.

"I prefer to be close to the front. I am no scout, but I can protect myself."

The goblin had sealed its fate by attacking them. His choice would be to let it live and let nature take its course, with it more than likely becoming prey to the local wolves. The practical and merciful decision would be to kill the goblin. Davroar keeps his tongue silent on the matter, and instead will busy himself in breaking camp.

She tends to think that maybe the goblin might still be useful but it's whining is getting on her nerves and she can see the sense in what the others are saying. She nods to Kriv.

Without further ceremony, he endeavours to end the goblin's life with a single swift application of the maul to its face.

After you defeated the goblins you inspected the area and realize that the goblins must have been using this place to stage ambushes for some time. Gurgle, your goblin prisoner, had stated that he's been out here for a while. What that means is that he probably doesns't know exactly what the status of Gundren and Sildar is.

Now, after you've rested and after you took care of Gurgle, you start to follow the trail that the goblin had pointed out. It's hidden behind thickets on the north side of the road leads northwest. Davroar, Jaliera and Karok recognize that about a dozen goblins have come and gone along the trail, as well as signs of two human-sized bodies being hauled away from the ambush site. You easily steer the wagon away from the road and tie off the oxen.

About 10 minutes down the trail Karok stops the procession because he spots a snare trap that the goblins had set. Had someone stepped in it they would have been caught in the ropes and found themselves dangling upside down from a tree. The goblin had said there were traps not a single trap, so you are on alert as you slowly trek down the path.

ADGKNZ Survival rolls for everyone Neptune rolled 1d20,1d20,1d20,1d20,1d20,1d20 and got 7(-1), 15(+3), 8(+2), 11(+3), 2(0), 3(3)
Note: to speed things up for skill rolls that are mostly for flavor text, I'll do the rolling to speed things up.
ADGKNZ is my acronym for AJ, Dugan, Gypsy, niveK, Nemarsde and Zeim. Your wisdom modifier is in parens.

Now I need an active perception check from everyone.

Unsure of what a goblin trap would look like, the noble nonetheless kept his eyes peeled for anything overtly out of place.

Chandan

He walks, musing and occasionally talking to either himself or the elements. Whenever he catches a companion's eye, he smiles broadly and waves.

All seems well with him.

We're 50-50 so far on the group perception roll. We need 1 more success (DC 15) or someone (Karok) is paying the price. Awaiting Davroar and Jalliera's rolls....

Jaliera

Thinking that the odds might well be stacked against them, she keeps her eyes peeled, not only on the ground for traps but also to the sides for both traps and ambushers. Ideally they need to reach the goblins lair quietly and without mishap.
