THE ACRO RULES

ACRO is a text game which is played in the ACRO section of DreamLyrics. The object of ACRO is to recraft a designated Acronymn in an amusing or offbeat manner. The various definitions are then posted and the Players vote on their choices in order of preference. The player who submitted the winning Acro becomes the next dealer.

ACRO Dealers and Players must post all communications relating to the Acro game in the ACRO section of the DreamLyrics web site. Dealers and Players are also encouraged to post their Acro messages to this email address YGI_NATION@YAHOO.COM (for the benefit of former players amd for anyone who wishes to play outside DreamLyrics) where they are part of the YGI group or to request others to do so on their behalf.

The Acro Dealer (that person who has gathered the most points from the previous round, or who is starting a new game) begins the new game by choosing an Acronymn from almost any source, and posts that Acronymn (and also the accepted expansion of that Acro) to the Acro Section of DreamLyrics and (it is hoped) to the email address.

The Players have until the stated deadline to submit an amusing, or eccentric expansion of the dealt Acro to the Dealer by email or by private message. An example might be, if the new Acro was HUD (Housing (and) Urban Development)...a Player might submit HOT UNDERWEAR DISPLAYED (Film at eleven)

At present, Dealers are requested to aim a deadline of around 72 hours for the Players to submit their defs for this word. If a Deal is taking place over a weekend, or over a major holiday, it is permissible to add in a little more time before the deadline. If a Dealer chooses to take advantage of this, he should post a general message to the Players, letting them know how long he will postpone his round. It is hoped that any such postponement will be for no more than seven days. If the Dealer foresees that, at that point in time, he cannot deal his round, he is encouraged to ask someone to volunteer to take over the round.

If, at the end of the pronounced deadline, the Dealer feels he has too few defs to have a meaningful vote, he should post a NAG MESSAGE, listing the Players who have submitted defs, and advancing the deadline, if necessary, in order to attract more defs. Where possible, he should email potential players who may not visit the site in time. Ideally this is done a day ahead of the deadline.

After the deadline has passed, and the Dealer has sufficient defs, he shall post a message in the ACRO Section. This message shall list all the defs that the Players have submitted, and post another deadline for the Players to vote.

When this message appears, the Players (and this includes people who have not submitted a def, but who wish to play) will vote on the various defs. The Players vote for three defs, in order of their Preference, clearly indicating which def they consider to be number one, and thence to number two and three.

Scoring is as follows: For each def that is voted as the number ONE def by any Player, the Author of that def will receive THREE Points. For each def that is voted as the number TWO def by any Player, the Author of that def will receive TWO Points. For each def that is voted as number THREE by any Player, the Author of that def will receive ONE Point. After the deadline, the Dealer totals up the votes and points for all the Players, and posts a results message in the ACRO section with the totals. The person receiving the most points is the new Dealer for the next round. Unlike Fictionary, the Dealer receives NO Points in a round that he has dealt. Also, because of the nature of this game, there are no DQ's in Acro, as there may be in Fictionary. As in Fictionary, a Player will receive NO Points if he votes for his own def in any position...first, second or third. Thus, the Players cannot vote for their own defs.

Should two Players submit the same, or similar difs, the def that was received first will be kept for that Player that submitted it. The Player who submitted the second def will be notified by the Dealer, and asked to submit another def...if he can do so within the deadline.

Tie Breaker rules for Round 1

If there is a tie for winner on Round 1 of a game, the next dealer will be determined as follows:

- If the winner of Round 25 wasn't the overall game winner, that person will deal Round 2. (Since they got to skate on the deal before.)
If the game winner was also the winner of Round 25:
- Person with the higher overall score from the prior game gets the deal.
If there's a tie there:
- Person who dealt least recently in the prior game gets the deal.

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I wanted to suggest that posting a running Master List of ACROs offered somewhere, would make it *much* easier for weekly winners to avoid duplicating previous offerings.

Thanks!

Nicki,

Clsoest thing to a master list that I can think of is the Scoreboard that Weez posts. At the end of every 25-round game, Weez gives a list of all the Acros used.

There should be a way to access all of Weex's Scoreboards in the archives here. I will look around some and let you know.

Thanks! I had to scroll through everything last time to be sure that the common ACRO I wanted to use hadn't already been done. It would be a great thing to have "one-stop shopping" for that info.

I put them all in a spreadsheet EXCEL format sorted by dates, sort of, with duplicates left out, and emailed it to you. If you put them all in a single column then SORT the data single column ascending, EXCEL will alphabetize them for you. then you could post it by letter of the alphabet, and anyone with an ACRO could see immediately if they were duplicating a previous entry.

If you need me to do the alphabetizing for you, I will be happy to. Takes a couple of minutes is all.

Couple of thoughts been percolating. Found some errors in the scores today - no blame to Shamrock, I know how easy it is to make a mistake scoring! grin

However, one of the reasons there might have been for a miscount is if someone voted for their own ACRO. Therefore, difficult to check scores if you are not the dealer.

I like systems to be fair and open. I don't feel that voting for your own ACRO is fair as we are all bound to like our own ACROs and voting for them denies the voting points to other players.

I don't even like it if folks don't vote - but I have to be reasonable as I know folks have lives outside of DL - or so it is rumoured!! grin - and provided it is only occasional, i guess we have to live with it.

As a tactical game player, and I am speaking as one who has won the last two games - therefore have no axe to grind! - anyone could give themselves a distinct advantage by either voting in their own def or just not voting at all.

I really think that folks (as most do already) should vote for their 3 favourites excluding their own!

So RulesDad, can we consider this? smile

Gypsy,

Hmmm just saw this thread now, and I have to take a better look at it later.

RL and DL lives are colliding today...I will be going to the airport and meeting AquaDyne today so I can't research this as much as I would like right now...

I will be back tomorrow with more to say...and thanks.

Gypsy,

You are indeed correct. I made a decision but I did not communicate it to the people concerned. I only hope that the OFJZBM does NOT hear about this.

I think that you know that I have always been against people voting for their own defs. I was going to expound further on the subject, but the post came just as I was going to go to the airport for a meeting with AquaDyne (make sure you see the May COFFEE TALK for that story).

When I got back here, and did some research, I found that the situation has arisen because the scorer had bobbled some entries. When they were corrected, it turned out that NO ONE had voted for their own def after all. I then decided that everything was both hunky and dory, and I did not have to ride to the rescue after all.

I should have so mentioned it here, since I see that at least one member was waiting for my input. I apologize profusely for not speaking up sooner. Please don't hurt me!

JimZ

There's a world of difference between a bash and a whap. Ask Ken and Barry. weg

That was partly the point though Jim. We cannot check scores and recognise when it may be wrong if there are scores in there that don't count because someone has voted for their own def - and they did on my deal a few weeks earlier.

So I would like to see the rules change where we cannot vote for our own defs and therefore avoid confusion, errors and potentially swaying the scores.

Please! smile

Me too. I suppose you could as a strategic move (going for the lemming effect). But then the points wouldn't count, right? Although it would preclude having to give someone *else* the 3 point vote...

Just scattershooting...

IDEA!!

I propose the vote being in PRI. It would eliminate all gamesmanship regarding voting (i.e., no lemmings, no "balancing" of secondary votes to keep any one choice from running away, etc.).

Then the dealer would post the vote, including any humorous comments. So you would still get to make your jokes, you just wouldn't unduly influence the other voters.
