I don't know about you guys but Age of Sigmar is just leaving me cold. It's the setting and visual design, they made Warhammer look like a rip-off of Warcraft... which is ironic because Warcraft looks like a rip-off of Warhammer!

You know what I mean? Warhammer's Old World setting was very distinctive, down to earth with a Nineties, grunge style. Age of Sigmar is colourful, more cartoonish super epic high fantasy.

So I had to know... Gregor's Guide to Gates!? I looked it up:

https://www.sjgames.com/gregorsguidetogates/

Now, I'm not sure what this supplement details. It doesn't detail the world on either side of the gates, just the portals themselves. This one's round. This one's square... zoiks I have no idea, it is a mystery. But if any of you ever read it and find out, let us know!

It seems that was originally a Kickstarter, and a sample page shown there does have detail about the other sides of a gate.

I was curious myself, so I just read through it. It does indeed contain details of the world on the other side of the gates, although they are extremely brief. Of course, the entire book is extremely brief, and I just read it in eight minutes.

Here's an example entry:

"The Door of Flames

Far below a towering mountain, near burning rivers of
lava and fire, a twelve-foot-tall stone door is covered in
a constantly burning flame. The door is unlocked and
swings easily on its hinges, though anyone touching
the door to open it suffers 3d8 points of fire damage.
Stepping through the open door inflicts another 3d8
points of fire damage. When opened, the door leads
to Inferno’s Heart, a circular demiplane inhabited by
numerous fire creatures.

Anyone can activate the Door of Flames and, once
opened, it remains open for 24 hours before slamming
shut. Once the portal opens to Inferno’s Heart, those
who pass through the door find themselves standing
on the bank of a river of fire.

Fortunately, inhabitants native to Inferno’s Heart
may not cross over into our world. Whatever magic
constructed the gate centuries ago blocks those who
dwell on that distant demiplane from using the gate to
escape their world.

Adventurers who use the gate suffer an additional 3d8
fire damage when they return to our world."

Kinda feel like I could've come up with a better fiery gate to fiery place by myself. I am... bemused that there was a Kickstarter.

lol Thanks for sharing that, Saph. It is hard to understand why there's a market for such basic descriptions but hey, if they made money out of it and the backers were satisfied, I guess no harm, no foul.

That Highhelm book's got me thinking. Has anyone here played in Pathfinder's fantasy setting? What's it like? How does it differentiate itself to Forgotten Realms, for example? Or maybe it doesn't. After all, Pathfinder was started as a way of maintaining a supported version of D&D 3rd Ed.

Pathfinder's fantasy setting (at least 1E, not sure if they changed in 2E), mostly the Inner Sea region of the planet Golarion but an extended number of other continents and even other planets, is fanTAStic.

It is so rich and interesting from country to country and there is so much source material available. Plus, lots of it ties into game mechanics so it's really immersive.

You can read a lot about it here: https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Pathfinder_Wiki

The various Adventure Paths look at different regions in detail. Curse of the Crimson Throne looks at the devil-worshipping land of Cheliax, Wrath of the Righteous looks at the Worldwound with a direct connection to the Abyss, Kingmaker, the lawless River Kingdoms. My campaign of the Eternal Winter starts in ancient and decrepit Taldor, goes to Baba Yaga's own created kingdom of Irrisen ruled by the winter witch queens sandwiched between the nordic barbarians of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and the tribes of the Mammoth Lords, then to the continent of Iobaria, then another planet of years-long winters or summers, then to a twisted version of the Russia of Rasputin and the end of the Romanovs.

I got deeply into Pathfinder specifically for the richness of the game world. It's so good that Savage Worlds even made a book that you can play in it with Savage Worlds rules.

One recent adventure path that I really love (on the page at least, haven't played it) is Strength of Thousands -- wizarding school set in the Mwangi Expanse, Golarion's equivalent of Africa. I really like how they keep trying different things and changing the formula up with their APs.

I wish Starfinder got more love too.

I might try one of the Pathfinder CRPGs, might give a taste of the setting.

I'd recommend Kingmaker, I think, over Wrath of the Righteous. Though the kingdom management is kind of unforgiving.

Wrath of the Righteous is a very constrained story setting. Doesn't have the breadth.

Hmm, I wouldn't have thought there was enough distinctive about Rivers of London to make an RPG out of it.

Werewolf: The Apocalypse is on its 5th Edition? Congrats to the original authors. Does it still use the buckets of d10 system? I always thought that went too far. I love dice, don't get me wrong, but you can have too much of a good thing, especially on a crowded table. lol

It's gone in a pretty different direction with the system, but it's still d10-based. Unfortunately it's also pretty awful, like most of WoD 5E. (Unsurprisingly, the only actual good WoD 5E books so far have been the ones published under license by Onyx Path, but they're not contracted to do any more.) If one isn't overly attached to the Apocalypse setting, then Werewolf: The Forsaken 2E is much more cleanly designed and better written... and if one's looking for the Apocalypse setting specifically, well, Paradox have made such a royal mess of it that the 20th Anniversary Edition is still a better pick.
