Hi,
In order to establish a standard for character creation and progression, we'll be moving to the standard for most games these days, DnDBeyond. I've created a campaign there and we'll use that. Note that I didn't pay for any books beyond the standard, but if you own a book you can use it. When we progress to the next level, let's get all of the characters together there. You can create a free account if you want. It offers limited but sufficient usage.

The link for the campaign is here: SKT on DnDBeyond

As for rules, we'll continue to use the 27 point buy system (see the attached screen shot from DnDBeyond)

We'll be adding more info here, in time.

So we need to go and recreate the pcs from scratch and then level them up and select spells, feats, etc? I suppose they can't just be imported from Roll20?
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Thu 11/05/23 13:13 UTC
Yes and no. The idea is to have all PCs in one place using the same set of rules. All the characters need to be reentered, not recreated. That should be relatively easy and it's for when you level up. You're months from that point.

This has to do with new PCs. New characters shouldn't enter the game supercharged, without the constraints that existing characters have on them.

Cool site, I will add in his spells. Ty for getting him started!

I note I can't add Fly as it isn't part of the Bard spell list. I think he has access to it due to his additional learning. I vaguely remember that. So if you can add it great, if not...

Same deal for Phantasmal Killer, though I thought that was part of his regular list. Maybe things have changed?
Posted By: MikeD Re: Point Buy and character generation - Thu 11/05/23 18:47 UTC
Yeah Pande. 'They' always 'change things' in each new 'release' ... so you have to buy the new books to stay current <sigh>

Mike, You're correct but 5e is ten years old and they've mostly just added to it. There was a recent upgrade of some things in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything and Xanthar's Guide to Everything. I need to review these.

In character creation there are some options before step 1. Use these configurations:

Character Preferences
Sources– Do not enable alternate sources
Partnered Content – Do not enable Partnered Content
Dice Rolling - Enable
Optional Features - Do not enable optional features
Advancement Type Milestone
Hit Point Type - Fixed
Use Prerequisites – Enable both Feats and Multiclass requirements
Show Level-Scaled Spells - Enable
Encumbrance Type – Use the standard encumbrance rules
Ignore Coin Weight – Do not enable
Ability Score/Modifier Display – Modifiers top
Character Privacy - Public

Races, classes and subclasses
Valid racial sources – Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide
Classes and Subclasses – Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, Sword Coast Adventurer’s Guide

Since I didn’t purchase and don’t intend to, options in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything and Xanthar’s Guide to Everything are not valid.

You're planning to start counting coin weight against encumbrance? (Just asking as it is written as a double-negative so could be confusing)
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Fri 12/05/23 13:48 UTC
I'm planning on letting the system do the math. What does 10000 GP weigh?

Yeah. I have never played in a game where the DM counted coins against encumbrance. I guess we'll be spending lots of time at money changers buying jewelry. Where is our party's Bag of Holding now?
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Fri 12/05/23 17:14 UTC
LOL. Mailes, see what trouble I cause!
Actually, the party, on a whole, is really rich because of the Lost Mines. What you carry on your person is the question.
The nearest place you are likely to find a jeweler is in Everlund, which is your next big town destination.

Funny I ran this Pavel in Lost Mines. His backstop has him killing his old crew. Oops said too much.

Alright, did the thing.
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Sun 14/05/23 09:36 UTC
Just a note. You all have months to do this. You are NOT going up to 7th level yet. It was put here because Mailes is going to add a character to the game at some point that is not an ogre.
Posted By: Gypsy Re: Point Buy and character generation - Sun 14/05/23 12:04 UTC
I quite like the ogre grin

We levelled up to 7th in July, 2022.

1000 Platinum is only 20 lbs. wink

Moneychangers here we come! And yes, I presume Nep meant we aren't' going up to 8th......?

I'm guessing that's what he meant, but Miales (and maybe me) might be joining the party before that milestone, thus we are CG'ing at 7.
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Sun 14/05/23 21:39 UTC
Aquadyne is correct.

There's a thought process whereby this party splits in two temporarily (we could have 10 pc's which is actually optimal). Unlike when we started Lost Mines of Phandelver, in this case there would be two parties on separate paths (LMP began with two parallel groups). There's actually some direction as to how exactly the split would work and story-related justification. You wouldn't be leveling to 8th for a while now. You just got to 7th after Yartar and you needed to accomplish a lot to achieve that level.

Well, I'm not gonna lie--- it was a bit of a faff logging into D&D Beyond. If you have an old, pre-Wizards takeover account, you have to contact tech support to get it reinstated. Tbh I just created a new account. wink

Having done that, the character generator was decent. I selected the Triton race from Volo's rather than the latest version from Mordenkeinen's, since that's what Arus originally used.

And it turns out I had a Wisdom skill I shouldn't have, but my Wis should be 12 not 10! Win!! grin (I used the standard array as normal.)

Created an account and tried creating my character, but must be doing something wrong as I can't select my druid circle of the moon. It only gives me circle of the land types.
Posted By: Neptune Re: Point Buy and character generation - Thu 18/05/23 11:57 UTC
Dugan, Strange. I don't see the character in the game. Try using this link
Posted By: nem Re: Point Buy and character generation - Thu 18/05/23 12:05 UTC
I'll try creating a druid later, see if I can help you Dugan.

OK, it worked fine for me and I could choose Circle of the Moon in the same dropdown as Circle of Land. So as Nept said, I think you need to create a character in the STK campaign specifically, so you get access to all of Nep's premium content.

Bulletproof way of the doing that:

  1. Login to D&D Beyond
  2. Hover over account name in the upper right
  3. Select "Campaigns" from the dropdown
  4. See STK, click "View Campaign" under it
  5. Now scroll down a bit and click "Create Unassigned Character"

That should get you where you need to be.

BTW, I created a Jaliera character for Gypsy and will have her claim it.
Posted By: Dugan Re: Point Buy and character generation - Fri 19/05/23 06:56 UTC
Thanks Neptune and nem. I got my character done. Only thing I could not seem to figure out is to add +1 for new magical hide armour I recently received.

In Character Builder Click the Anvil next to "Campaign"

Click on "5. Equipment"

Next Menu is Choosing Equipment Click on "Add Items"

Type "Hide," in the search box (make sure you add the comma)

You should be able to finds it then

Thank you Neptune. You are a star! 🌟 I was wondering when I would find time to have a go. And thank you Neil & Miales.. always appreciate techie help! grin When I worked in our techie company it was so nice having techie people around! I mean I know I still have Tusk but he is not exactly firing on all cylinders ATM! lol

Hey all! Your DM pro tempore and future DM of half the part with a small request.

I've realized as I have been running this current combat encounter that I don't have copies of your current character sheets after you leveled up from 6 to 7. I've been trusting on you all to know what you've got and occasionally looked up what's different when the sheet hasn't matched the pdf at the top of the forum.

It's not a big deal, but your path from 7 to 8 will involve a bit more combat (sorry) which I'll be running (muahahaha) and it'd be exceedingly helpful for me to have everyone's L7 sheet available.

This is still a couple months away, so there's no rush. I know some of you have started this, and I'm happy to help anyone out who needs to do it... it's pretty easy to set up and if you already have your sheet from before it shouldn't take you very long to match it up... and the new sheet auto-updates the pdf link too.

So sometime in the next several weeks or so... say August-ish... it would be really helpful for me if most of you could get a sheet up on DnDBeyond that I can reference. If it's too confusing, let me know and between me or Nep or other helpful folks that have done it, we can probably get you sorted.
