I don't know about you guys but Age of Sigmar is just leaving me cold. It's the setting and visual design, they made Warhammer look like a rip-off of Warcraft... which is ironic because Warcraft looks like a rip-off of Warhammer!

You know what I mean? Warhammer's Old World setting was very distinctive, down to earth with a Nineties, grunge style. Age of Sigmar is colourful, more cartoonish super epic high fantasy.

Gregor's Guide to Gates

So I had to know... Gregor's Guide to Gates!? I looked it up:

https://www.sjgames.com/gregorsguidetogates/

Now, I'm not sure what this supplement details. It doesn't detail the world on either side of the gates, just the portals themselves. This one's round. This one's square... zoiks I have no idea, it is a mystery. But if any of you ever read it and find out, let us know!
Posted By: Argus Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 28/04/23 04:52 UTC
It seems that was originally a Kickstarter, and a sample page shown there does have detail about the other sides of a gate.

I was curious myself, so I just read through it. It does indeed contain details of the world on the other side of the gates, although they are extremely brief. Of course, the entire book is extremely brief, and I just read it in eight minutes.

Here's an example entry:

"The Door of Flames

Far below a towering mountain, near burning rivers of
lava and fire, a twelve-foot-tall stone door is covered in
a constantly burning flame. The door is unlocked and
swings easily on its hinges, though anyone touching
the door to open it suffers 3d8 points of fire damage.
Stepping through the open door inflicts another 3d8
points of fire damage. When opened, the door leads
to Inferno’s Heart, a circular demiplane inhabited by
numerous fire creatures.

Anyone can activate the Door of Flames and, once
opened, it remains open for 24 hours before slamming
shut. Once the portal opens to Inferno’s Heart, those
who pass through the door find themselves standing
on the bank of a river of fire.

Fortunately, inhabitants native to Inferno’s Heart
may not cross over into our world. Whatever magic
constructed the gate centuries ago blocks those who
dwell on that distant demiplane from using the gate to
escape their world.

Adventurers who use the gate suffer an additional 3d8
fire damage when they return to our world."

Kinda feel like I could've come up with a better fiery gate to fiery place by myself. I am... bemused that there was a Kickstarter.

lol Thanks for sharing that, Saph. It is hard to understand why there's a market for such basic descriptions but hey, if they made money out of it and the backers were satisfied, I guess no harm, no foul.

That Highhelm book's got me thinking. Has anyone here played in Pathfinder's fantasy setting? What's it like? How does it differentiate itself to Forgotten Realms, for example? Or maybe it doesn't. After all, Pathfinder was started as a way of maintaining a supported version of D&D 3rd Ed.
Posted By: Vryx Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Wed 24/05/23 19:41 UTC
Pathfinder's fantasy setting (at least 1E, not sure if they changed in 2E), mostly the Inner Sea region of the planet Golarion but an extended number of other continents and even other planets, is fanTAStic.

It is so rich and interesting from country to country and there is so much source material available. Plus, lots of it ties into game mechanics so it's really immersive.

You can read a lot about it here: https://pathfinderwiki.com/wiki/Pathfinder_Wiki

The various Adventure Paths look at different regions in detail. Curse of the Crimson Throne looks at the devil-worshipping land of Cheliax, Wrath of the Righteous looks at the Worldwound with a direct connection to the Abyss, Kingmaker, the lawless River Kingdoms. My campaign of the Eternal Winter starts in ancient and decrepit Taldor, goes to Baba Yaga's own created kingdom of Irrisen ruled by the winter witch queens sandwiched between the nordic barbarians of the Lands of the Linnorm Kings and the tribes of the Mammoth Lords, then to the continent of Iobaria, then another planet of years-long winters or summers, then to a twisted version of the Russia of Rasputin and the end of the Romanovs.

I got deeply into Pathfinder specifically for the richness of the game world. It's so good that Savage Worlds even made a book that you can play in it with Savage Worlds rules.

Nice! Thanks for the mini-review, Vryx. I'll have a closer look then. smile
Posted By: Saph Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Sun 28/05/23 02:45 UTC
One recent adventure path that I really love (on the page at least, haven't played it) is Strength of Thousands -- wizarding school set in the Mwangi Expanse, Golarion's equivalent of Africa. I really like how they keep trying different things and changing the formula up with their APs.

I wish Starfinder got more love too.

I might try one of the Pathfinder CRPGs, might give a taste of the setting.
Posted By: Vryx Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Tue 30/05/23 02:43 UTC
I'd recommend Kingmaker, I think, over Wrath of the Righteous. Though the kingdom management is kind of unforgiving.

Wrath of the Righteous is a very constrained story setting. Doesn't have the breadth.

It's gone in a pretty different direction with the system, but it's still d10-based. Unfortunately it's also pretty awful, like most of WoD 5E. (Unsurprisingly, the only actual good WoD 5E books so far have been the ones published under license by Onyx Path, but they're not contracted to do any more.) If one isn't overly attached to the Apocalypse setting, then Werewolf: The Forsaken 2E is much more cleanly designed and better written... and if one's looking for the Apocalypse setting specifically, well, Paradox have made such a royal mess of it that the 20th Anniversary Edition is still a better pick.

Definitely. It's so bland now that a lot of the tribes don't really have much identity. In doing so, they've created such an overlap with auspices (the Ghost Council writeup might as well be the theurge writeup) that it's all an indistinct mess. The book contradicts itself a lot on what the Garou are actually for now as well. (I wrote about a thousand words of criticism on the topic elsewhere, but I'll spare you all the word count. grin )

Since so much of the TTRPG industry is crowdfunded now, and I back several per month (up to 13 this month! 😅), would a periodic writeup of nifty ongoing and upcoming TTRPG kickstarters be of use to anyone? (Not to co-opt this topic, just don't want to go making a thread for it if I'll be talking to myself!)

The Weird might be one of those books that's handy for all GMs to have on their shelf. The sort of thing you might flick through before a session to help stoke your imagination.

Quote
https://www.montecookgames.com/the-weird/
Every chapter gives you advice on how to make a particular topic more interesting, then gives you literally hundreds of actionable ideas to run with. NPCs, creatures, places, magic items, gear, spells, abilities, names, appearances, backgrounds, plots, structures, vehicles—and yes, even player characters—each get a chapter. Make anything in your game more interesting!

Sometimes it's hearing someone else's ideas of how to inject some spice that spurs me to come up with my own. Enthusiasm is contagious.

Funny!

I completely missed that in the listings. I hit the traveller stuff and went into blah blah mode.

Thanks for pointing it out!
Posted By: nem Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Tue 24/10/23 18:06 UTC
You wanna know something crazy? I have never played Traveller. Ever. In any iteration. I should probably remedy that some day. Heck, I don't even know what it's about other than it's sci-fi!
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Tue 24/10/23 19:18 UTC
Most of my traveler experience goes via the wayback machine. When it first started it was a life path character creation system. What that essentially means is you made rolls to see where your life took you along the path. In their infinite gamist wisdom, you could die on that path. So each roll to make a better character carried with it an inherent risk.

My friends and I are all nerds, yes shocking I know.

One friend decided it was stupid to get 20 rolls into creating the character you wanted and have it expire, thus end. So he sat down and wrote a program in basic on an old computer that ran thousands of iterations to get different characters and took out the ones that died. So you could munchkin your character even though there were rolls and tables involved. grin

We had fun playing Traveler, but I can't speak to current versions. I would personally say there are much better sci-fi game systems out there now. No need to go back to what it once was. But at least it was a start!
Posted By: nem Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 27/10/23 07:30 UTC
Being Munchkin is a way of life. grin

I think Mongoose changed Traveller's system back in D&D 3e days and it's been their baby ever since. They've also made a Traveller prequel called 2300AD, about humanity's first contacts. They have 15 core rulebooks listed on their site! That's a lot of books, though about half of them seem to be gear. I guess it's still one of those Nineties-style systems where gear is all important and they used to release fictional catalogues full of the stuff.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 27/10/23 14:25 UTC
2300 wasn't too bad. Greatly improved vs the classic Traveler.

But milage may vary as with all things.
Posted By: nem Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 27/10/23 15:03 UTC
So is Traveller more Star Trek or Star Wars, would you say, Pande?
Posted By: Vryx Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 27/10/23 16:24 UTC
I always thought of Traveller more like if Robert Heinlein inspired an RPG. More "hard" sci-fi stuff. Do I have that right with the newer editions, Pande?

We played SpaceMaster back in the late 80s, the sci-fi equivalent of RoleMaster, but also used the nickname "SplatMaster" because it was just insanely deadly in combat. We lost the whole party to a grenade in the first session.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Fri 27/10/23 16:59 UTC
I would agree with Vryx.

Star Wars is sci-fi fantasy, space opera, which is totally fun, but different.

Star Trek is even more fantasy but with certain underpinnings that draw it a particular flavoristic way. (Not sure that is even a word. grin )

Traveller was intended to be more realistic, in its own vein.

Never played SpaceMaster, not sure I need to with that TPK recommendation. razz
Posted By: nem Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Sun 05/11/23 09:01 UTC
Well I'm glad it's still in print. We need solid alternatives to Star Wars and Star Trek. Those two have become a little staid imo and of course the RPG licences are tightly controlled. For example, when FFG published their Star Wars games, they weren't allowed to sell PDFs because they only had rights to printed products. Awkward.
Posted By: Pandemonium Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Sun 05/11/23 19:14 UTC

Wow I had no idea, but that is kinda screwed up. I get why they protect their intellectual property that way, but... as a serious pdf consumer, it leaves me without an option.
Posted By: nem Re: RPG Monthly Releases 2023 - Mon 06/11/23 10:57 UTC
Absolutely. It made running an FFG Star Wars campaign online rather dependent on jolly roger PDFs, since it was impossible for players to sit around the table reading each others books.

Of course, this was the intention of the restriction. Technically playing online is "digital gaming", which is a much higher value licence than tabletop.

Ah finally, a Warhammer 40K RPG that's set entirely within Imperial domains. It's a shame the d100 system is so clunky otherwise I'd be well up for that. There's enough intrigue, adventure and richness within the Imperium to carry a campaign, I think, without bringing in the armies of xenos and heretics. At that point you're better off playing the wargame (if you can afford it lol ).
