I think Don would have been proud that this game has lasted to 50 iterations! Well done everyone!
Anyhoo, here are the rules as composed originally by Don, iirc.
Player one: Star Wars, Player Two: Mark Hamil, Player Three: Corvette Summer, Player Four: Annie Potts, Player Five: Ghostbusters, etc., etc.
[nemarsde tweak]No repeats within 5 steps and avoid getting caught in a loop with MCU or Fast & Furious movies, for example. Long-running franchises with ensemble casts can allow you go round and round indefinitely.[/nemarsde tweak]
No IMDb please <except to look up dates of movies with identical titles or spellings of names>. grin
You need to follow the chain as it is drawn, no jumping. If we have Stephen Moyer on the table and someone plays Prince Valiant then the Prince Valiant you have to go out of is the one that had Stephen Moyer in it, no matter how many other movies out there are named Prince Valiant.
A clarification on play. We want to avoid using archival footage. For purposes of our game Dick Clark, Bob Hope, President Kennedy etc. Did not appear in Forrest Gump.
I won't make this a rule but rather a recommendation. Please avoid films that have not been released/aired in the U.S.
And just for the sake of putting it into the written rules mostly for sake of newcomers voice work (animated films) and made-for-TV movies are allowed but not mini-series.
One of my favorites! I still consider her a Disney Princess even if her contract didn't allow it!
And the villian(ess)(ish) was portrayed by one of my favorite Broadway stars, Idina Menzel.
(Actually, after writing that, I looked it up and realize I misremembered her role. It was not as the villianness but she was key to the plot resolution. I need to watch this again!)
Technically Idina's character was the one who became a Disney Princess, since she hooked up with the Prince at the end... but she was ALSO a princess in Frozen 2
Well, I definitely know him from Firefly and *think* I know something in the Disneyverse where he's voiced something but I'm not 100% sure so I'll wait.
So this wasn't a popular film last year and was badly mauled critically, but I thought it's only offence was being too long. Why the heck did they waste time introducing an alien species in one scene when they had no bearing on the setting or story? Felt like they were ticking a sci-fi box. Good cast of actors though and worth watching for the star turn by a pooch. Chaos Walking.
Okay- haven't been on much- but there aren't many notable choices in this one. I watched it... thought it was okay... more than meh!
anyway... I can think of two other names from this movie.... One is an actress that I was beginning to wonder if her turn at a big franchise role was going to be both the high point AND the end of her career at the same time. But it seems she is finally getting a couple more roles offered to her. Maybe the sand and dust had to settle a bit. BUT- that really only sends us in one direction (and I'm not talking about the boy band)
In other chains I recall the instructions suggested not trying to stump the fellow players, but the last few rounds have seemed to take well known actors and intentionally go to unpopular films. That's fine if the goal is to stump people. Is that the goal?
Anyway, I love the Disneyverse and Mads was in Cars, but rather than that I'll go with the 007 universe and the most recent remake of Casino Royale, my favorite of the most recent Bond's performances.
Aqua, I think it is more a case of people picking films they enjoyed and thought that others would know them as well. At least that is what i hope happened
Dame Judi Dench was in that one.
(I almost went with Ivana Miličević since she is in some of my favorite movies, but did not think many would know who she was. She was in Down With Love and Head Over Heels, two of my favs )
I was going to pick Spider-man: No Way Home instead of Chaos Walking but suspected we'd already had Benedict Cumberbatch. Turns out I was wrong; I just checked. But anyway, Chaos Walking was only last year, was big budget sci-fi and starred Tom Holland, Daisy Ridley, Mads Mikkelsen and Nick Jonas, so it seemed like a safe bet. Wasn't trying to stump anyone.
Watched Romancing the Stone again recently. What a brilliant film! I love how jam-packed films from the Eighties are.
Anyway...
Douglas was in 1994's controversial Disclosure.
I love how this film was all about a new, cutting edge technology, CD-ROM drives!
Though to be fair, optical drives are still with us today, going strong in the latest generation of video game consoles.
I have a SanDisk 128 GB USB3.1 pen drive right here that frankly is less useful in today's world. If I want to transfer 128 GB of data these days, I'll just zip it up and save it to the cloud.
Does a typo kill the chain? I'm sure KenSeg meant to write Bill Paxton, who was in Apollo 13 and not the actor Bill Patton who passed away back in 1951 (I had to look that up) If we can continue, I do know Bill Paxton was in Aliens.
I had seen it and remembered the female lead in general but couldn't id her. Thanks PP!
The obvious next step would be Basic Instinct, but we have had Michael Douglas too recently, so instead I'll riff on that. She reprised her character from Basic Instinct in a cameo appearance in the horribly awesome meta-film:
While I'm tempted to pay homage to some of the other cast members, I think the chain would be best served by the one who rivaled Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Daniel Craig in his portrayal of a spy.
The Quick and the Dead is a good one for this game. It's rammed with names. Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Leo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Keith David, Lance Henriksen, Gary Sinise... and of course being a Sam Raimi film, a cameo by Bruce Campbell.
Phew!
As for Mike Myers, whatever happened to him? Did his brand of piss-taking comedy finally piss someone off?
I guess Hollywood doesn't do that sort of comedy anymore. You can make fun of yourself but not of other people.
Anyway, the Austin Powers films are crammed with cameos but tbh they're hard to remember over 20 years later!
So I'll go for Shrek.
Sure, voice actors can be hard to remember too but this cast was pretty well publicised and had numerous sequels to bed in the memory.
Idle was the voice of Rincewind in the Discworld computer game. Ah classic. But games don't count so it's still to play.
AquaDyne, I think Don's rules stated movies, voice work in animated movies, and TV/direct to video movies are all allowed. But I suspect a part in a Disney attraction might be too niche even if it was allowed.
i would concur... Journey into the Imagination starring Eric Idle and Figment is not really a true film credit.
I was actually thinking of Honey, I Shrunk the Audience! which I'd count as a "short film" with a lot of fourth-wall breaking. Unlike Journey Into Imagination With Figment which is a moving ride, that attraction has the audience in their seats watching a (3D) movie on a screen. And it's based on (a quasi-sequel to) a traditional film.
As for the Adventures movie, I'm pretty sure Uma Thurman was in that.
I was privileged to see the new Mrs. Doubtfire musical right before its Broadway run. I was actually scheduled to attend the last preview performance before opening night, when COVID shut down the lights.
Weird. I remember Parsons being in it too, but not Dunst who I'm usually very keen on. Thanks AquaDyne!
As for Cavill, I once played Proof of Life and no-one had any idea what film I was talking about even though it had two other big names in it. So I won't do that again! So instead I'll play a really fricking obvious one, Mission Impossible 6. Starring someone who celebrates a much anticipated release this week. I plan to watch it on IMAX next week in fact.
I need to go see that. Hmm, might take a day off in the week.
Anyway, in Heart of the Sea was Chris Hemsworth. I didn't rate the film very highly btw. There ultimately isn't much story there, though the incident itself is obviously very dramatic.
While I'd love to go Disney-ward with a movie about olympic ice hockey, Kurt is the only actor whose name I remember from that movie. So let's try the star studded:
one actor in scissorhands has many notable roles... and a mega franchise. But I think I would like to go with one of a the other well regarded thespians.
Are we trying to avoid the infinity loop here? Can't remember anyone other than Marisa Tomei (who we haven't seen since page 9) but I'm pretty sure she has a lot of options to go to.
We're always trying to avoid the infinity loop. Surprisingly tricky!
But I remember Tomei distinctly in two non-franchise films. One I already used on page 5 but the other one is from the Nineties. Untamed Heart. Had a big name lead actor at the time who is, um... are they still acting??
Can we just say I used part of the title? Not too long ago, you mixed up "Every which way but loose" and "Any which way you can" into "Any which way but loose". So do we go with what the player was thinking or what they typed?
I enjoyed a date night last night watching Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris with my lovely bride. It reminded me of some of the fashion world silliness of this movie.
Very recently. Earth about to be destroyed by a comet but nobody cares. Satirical statement about climate change, I think.
OK, did a search and while I'd love to make a pun about an astronomer "looking up" and seeing Leo, he's been played on page 5 and 10, so no need to play him on page 15.
We haven't yet played Jennifer Lawrence in this game, though!
(Speaking of which, I saw a preview yesterday for some new movie in the franchise Ms. Lawrence is famous for and know absolutely nothing about it. Anyone know what it's all about?)
The Outsiders (early 80s- 82 or 83 I think- I was in high school and had read the book as part of a class, don't remember if it was sophomore or junior year though)
It'd be easy to go with the DeLorean film but my favourite Lloyd performance was in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. Fortunately also a very easy film!
I'd love to go with the actress who played the lead role on the 2012 Broadway revival of Annie, but I'm not sure what other films she's been in lately.
But I do know James Corden has been in quite a few.
Yes Sir and Thank You! I was really worrying- Bill Cosby, Racquel Welch, Harvey Keitel and even Larry Hagman were in this 70s romp about two rival independent ambulance companies and the shenanigans they get up as they compete for business.
So, a tip of the hat to Don and Exeter(who both loved older action movies)
While I'd love to indicate his most recent theatrical release as a milk-loving cat on his 9th life... I can't name anyone else in the voice cast.
I will keep with the same character, however, and pick the last of the Shrek franchise, known by many titles. Shrek the fourth, Shrek: The final chapter, and I think the official title, Shrek Forever After.
OK, I've waited long enough with a hint. Don't blame me if nobody else knows where to take him, but I know of at least two good options with plenty of other cast to get out of this corner of film-dom.
Thanks for the rescue, PP! I didn't know about Joe Dirt. Dennis was primarily in TV but had a few films including Disclosure, alongside Demi Moore, Michael Douglas, and Donald Sutherland among others; and What Happens in Vegas alongside Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher.
Anyway, we're all the way into Sleepy Hollow.... so why not Christina Ricci?
Yeah, but there were some big names and smaller MCU names in this one.
Scarlett Johansson played Kaa, the snake. Idris Elba and Ben Kingsley were also MCU tie ins.
Garry Shandling was the porcupine.
And Christopher Walken was King Louie, and it was awesome when Mowgli picked up a cowbell... but I realized after posting that he would have been a repeat within 5 characters.
Not sure about everyone else, but it's harder for me to remember voice actors unless it is an actor I really like, and even that is really iffy. I'm more of a visual person.
